3 stars (C ycnical btu not to be missed) - Some realpolitik here. I can't say I enjoyed it thoroughly but I was curious and I lked learning abiout behaviors I could benefit from knowing. 4 stars (It's Not ALL Work, Can Be Fun!) - This valuable reference book explains the "in's and outs" of office politics, which are the most single factor in getting ahead in the career of your choice. This book is full of commonsense wisdom on how to get along with others and get ahead in life. Dr. Reardon is the author of THE SECRET HANDSHAKE about business psychology. She's great! Talent alone does not insure success; you must have those important relationships with the people who can best reward your creativity and intelligence. You are encouraged to 'pick your battles wisely' to deal with a difficult co-worker. When we think about politicians, automatically the words 'unethical' and 'devious' (sometimes flat-out 'lies') come to mind. In the workplace, "knowing what to say, to whom, and how and when to say it." Most of all, you will need to be able to convert enemies into your allies to win crucial support for your ideas. The only way to avoid politics at work is to avoid people. "For every locked entrance, there is a back door, window, even a chimney;" always be sure there is a way out before you crawl into a corner. It is important to remember that there is more than one way to handle any situation: good, bad or indifferent. Intuition is needed, but just as necessary is the power of persuasion.Power is a critical part of career politics. People remember those they perceive to be powerful. Power, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder. A good read, wonderful instruction in the ways of life at work and at home, and packed full of good advice. 5 stars (A great book) - A great book with a practical approach to a sensitive area for all men. 5 stars (Great tool to overcome sexual temptation) - This is an incredible book. It totally helped me to overcome my struggles with pornography and sexual temptation in general. It gives the reader tools to fight the battle. I'd highly recommend it. It's changed my life and the lives of others I know. If you struggle at all in this area, it's the book for you. 2 stars (Agreed) - Hello, my name is Michael Campbell, and having used this book in a study group I agree that it is totally a mixed bag. I feel her review is right on, and dont really have that much to add to it. Luckily it was a quick read (each of the 6 sections takes only 20 or 30 minutes to read) and so I dont feel I wasted a lot of time on it. If you struggle with sexual purity then this is for you. If not invest your time in the Bible or another wonderful book Gods Politics by Wallis. God bless! Mike Campbell ... 4 stars (Another Winner!) - First of all I want to confess that I am John Maxwell junkie. I not only thoroughly enjoy his books but they help me in becoming a better person. This book is written where every chapter is golden and yet able to stand alone. You can simply open the book to any chapter and it will enrich you. Even though the chapters are segmented into 5 logical sections. I especially liked the chapter entitled, "The Pain Principle: Hurting people hurt people and are easily hurt by them". This chapter increased my empathy and sensitivity for hurting people. It just makes sense that those that lash out are really hurting people. I gave this book 4 stars simply because his best work by far was, "21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership". As helpful as this book was I simply tried to read a chapter each evening before going to sleep. Like a nutritious light snack that won't keep you up all night. 4 stars (Impressed with reservations) - This is the second book I've read from John Maxwell. Overall, I found the book to be well written, personal, and filled with principles, explanations, and anecdotes. Each principle is explained in a manner that should strike a cord in many people. He supports the concept embodied by the principle with anecdotes, both personal and historical. If you are looking for a book to help with interpersonal relationships, this is a good book to to start with. John covers a lot of ground in this book. That would be my major criticism of the book. There are many, many strategies and approaches, and keeping track can get confusing. They are well organized. This will have to be a book that you refer back to as issues in your life come up and you are looking for help. I think Covey's work is more managable and priciple system oriented, but that shouldn't detract from John's work. There is an unlying system, but John's approach appears to be more of set of tools to help you, with each dealing with a specific type of problem. 5 stars (... 1 stars (Another Disappointing Book on Strategy) - Every once in a while I go out and buy another strategy book to flip through, and honestly, I am generally disappointed in what is out there. This book however ranks among the worst. The first sign is the blatant grammatical and spelling errors starting in Chapter 1 (i.e. "...then we are run like hell out of the trade."). The second warning bell comes with the gross misrepresentations about the market in general (i.e. "...low-price stocks translates into a higher-risk premium and, as a category, these low-priced stocks tends to do well..." - again, the author's grammar, verbatim). Sometimes the poor grammar can be chalked up to someone who is so into their game that they skipped less important classes when they were young (i.e. grammar, spelling, literature), and market hype can be the result of true passion, albeit a wee bit overzealous. Unfortunately, the reader quickly discovers the actual content is not very useful either, and is just a re-hashing of weak systems containing catchy buzz words and simplistic formulas. 5 stars (Greate book for system devlopers) - I have been developing trading systems for 5 years and this book has many intesting ideas. I checked most of them out with my data and started trading with some. I think it is a great book for someone who is interested with system development and needs new ideas. 1 stars (Don't waste your time or money.) - This is one of those rare books which are so thin, you can learn as much from their table of contents as from their actual contents. There are a number of things I didn't like about this book and its packaging, but I will only list two for brevities sake. First, there are not "20 Successful Uncorrelated Strategies". "Technique 19" is simply a list of what the author believes doesn't work. "Technique 20" is a reading list of books the author likes; there are probably hundreds of Wall Street listmanias listing the same books. The other 18 present abs... 5 stars (Jack Welch is great!) - Jack Welch is a great business leader! He is also very direct and to the point about his ideas. I love that about his book. A must read for anyone serious about growing and learning. 4 stars (Lots of good insight into the world of business) - I am a small business owner trying to think big and "keep it real." There were many valuable insights in here and reminders on common sense issues. 3 stars (Insightful At Times, but Mostly Superficial) - Jack Welch clearly is a legendary business leader; however, a great writer he is not. The book offers a few insights - eg. the power of corporate vision and value, budgeting and rewarding performance in the real (dynamic) world - but his book is not nearly as specific and helpful as Larry Bossidy's (Welch's former #2) "Confronting Reality," and "Execution." Sadly, the book also does not reference how Welch greatly simplified planning and accountability by getting rid of the planners and layers of bureaucracy, and instead focusing on fast reaction - a lesson that some firms, government and public education still need to learn. In addition, Welch does not address most of the vast changes simplifying much of management in the last few years - even though he pioneered much of their use. The job has become primarily one of reducing costs - especially by shifting work away from Americans. This is accomplished by: 1)Maximizing outsourcing (eg. to Canada - primarily to avoid U.S. healthcare costs; to China and India - primarily to greatly reduce production labor, call-center, and design and programming costs, 2)Maximizing use of illegal immigrants within the U.S. - eg. in the meatpacking, construction, and other food-processing and food-serving areas, 3)Maximizing use of legal temporary immigrants within the U.S. - eg. Indian citizens with H-1B and L1 visas in areas such as electronics design and manufacturing, and computer programming. 4)Maximizing use of aggressive accounting - eg. capit... 5 stars (What a great idea Michael has!) - If you haven't read Michael's bio, you should. Happily married for 12 years, he knows what he is talking about! Dubbed by the media as "Racy Jaci" because of her quick wit and "The Rae of Hope," for her powerful insight. 5 stars (How To Make Adults Cry) - Even before I had a fiance I was a sucker for those proposal shows - every time I saw a real life proposal that they showed on TV, it made me cry. When it was time for me to get engaged I wanted to have a proposal that was endearing, touching and dramatic like the ones I saw on TV. This book was the start of a fantastic proposal that not only was magnificient, it also was featured on the local news and in two of our newspapers. I had some ideas of my own before reading the book, but everything I read really helped me to flesh it out and perfect it. It was definitely worth the investment. A nice bonus were the dozens of photos of some of the actual proposals featured in the book. The ring cost me $3000 so I figured I could spend a little more to make it a proposal of a lifetime and I am glad I did. 1 stars (Don't waste your money) - Don't waste your money on this book, the stories aren't any different than what you can find posted on some web site somewhere. And as far as the tips that go along with the book, you would have to be a retard not to know you shouldn't say "I'll marry you if you lose 20 pounds." 5 stars (All The Fundamentals) - It clearly explains the currency market, how it works, how to get a free practice account and great websites to check out. For trading strategies you need to research elsewhere or invent them yourself. 5 stars (Concise "big picture" book) - This book is perfect for getting the big picture view of forex trading. It's perfectly titled "Getting Started in Currency Trading". The chapters are concisely written with clear examples that are not cluttered up with useless stories. This book made it easy for me to plan the steps necessary to start trading. What this book WILL NOT do for you: 1. Give you a step by step methodology for trading What this book WILL do for you: 1. Make you aware of the main points to keep in mind with trading currencies. 2. Tell you exactly where to look for more information 3. Will not overwhelm you with tons of nuances and indicators 4. Give you a thorough understanding of money management 5. Allow you to make a detailed checklist of what needs to be in place before you put in your first trade. Hope this helps. 5 stars (Great Foundation Builder) - This book is an excellent resource to build a foundation about the FOREX market. I read several books and articles about the FOREX market but this book gave me the best understanding about currency trading. If you don't know anything about currency trading, this book has the resources in it to give you the basic about FOREX. 2 stars (not visually pleasing) - Although some of the patterns were quite lovely--and creative! one pair is knitted using licorice--the book is not lovely. The photographs of people either wearing or holding up socks are distracting, to say the least, and add little. Also, no yarn information is given for the sample versions shown. 5 stars (my favourite knitting book) - I own scores of knitting books, but I always come back to this one. Socks are perfect little projects for breaks between big projects, and great for trying new techniques. There are lots of different techniques in this book: Dutch heels, Turkish (short-row) heels, after-thought heels, cuff-down construction, toe-up construction, two-needle method, two-circular method, machine knitting, sideways-knitted, etc. The list of knitting skills you can try is comprehensive: lace knitting, cables, intarsia, fair isle, mosaic, modular (entrelac, mitred squares), embossed (bobbles, etc.), ribble (reversible cable)... the list goes on. Highly recommended. 3 stars (Some of the patterns have mistakes) - Overall I would have to say that this is a good book and worth buying. I have found mistakes in the Interlac socks, and with the maple twist socks, The maple twist socks, I have tried three times and still have yet to make it look like a proper sock. Everthing is fine until the last 3 sections. The Interlac socks are missing a set of squares after the heel. I have also tried the leafy lacy ones, and the fire like ones and found no mistakes in there. I also have a tendancy of trying to find the hardest pattern and doing it so it could be a me thing. If there were no mistakes in the book I would give it five of five, but the mistakes are nerve wraking for me Jodi ... 5 stars (An Olympic Champion teaches Kids about how to Compete) - When the Olympic torch was making its way around the Olympic Stadium in Salt Lake City this month it was not surprising that at one point Bonnie Blair was one of the former Olympians to carry the torch. After all, Blair is the winningest U.S. athlete in Winter Olympic history and the winner of more gold medals than any other female U.S. Olympian as a speed skater. " A Winning Edge " was written by Blair for children, with whom she shares the sacrifices and victories that made her famous and her belief that the best motivation for speed skating or any other endeavor is doing it for love. " A Winning Edge " tells the story of the Blair family, where Bonnie was the youngest of six kids. In fact, her father dropped off her mom at the hospital for Bonnie's birth and then took the rest of the family to a skating race. The book is filled with pictures from the Blair family album and illustrations by Doug Keith depicting Bonnie's key moments in Bonnie's life and skating career. Bonnie tells about how she joined her racing family on the ice, how she developed her training regimen, and how the police department in her hometown of Champaign, Illinois helped raise money for her to train in Europe. The results were Bonnie's success at the 1984 Winter Games in Sarajevo, the 1988 games in Calgary, the Albertville games in 1992, and the Lillehammer games in 1994. Bonnie provides not only memories about her races, but those of her longtime friend Dan Jansen. This book is like reading a family photo album or scrapbook with Bonnie pointing out to you what everything means and how it was important in her life. Young readers dreaming of being an athlete will be inspired by her emphasis on the four key words that made Bonnie's own dreams come true: dedication, balance, risk and love. 5 stars (Excellent book.) - This is a great book. The stories about playing days are getting a little dated, but the concepts are timeless. There are several sections that I'm going to re-read. The only people who shouldn't read this are my opponents. :D 5 stars (An excellent title for players with sound strokes) - I remember picking up this book from a bookstore a few years back. Then, I didn't have sound strokes and a pathetic serve. The book was humorous and excellent tips on how to beat power players, moonballers, net players and more. Unfortunetly, the book didn't do any good for me. Until now, I have improved my groundstrokes and serve greatly and I'm starting to go the net. I now play strategicily in singles and doubles in competition and now a plan of action in each game. Read this book. It is your essential key to winning matches. Treat it like your tennis bible! It will only work if you can play a decent game of tennis. The better you play with your strokes, the more you can get out of this book. 5 stars (great book) - Somebody here said - "But if you are 3.5 or below don't bother with this book"...Man, think before you utter nonsense like this. This book is great, there are very few club players who think on the court. After reading this book, I guarantee they'll be thinking more about their game, analyzing, and getting better results. 5 stars (About so much more than baseball!) - Don't judge a book by its cover. Ostensibly the title and cover of this book would lead you to conclude that this book is all about baseball. It isn't. When I was handed this book I was expecting a dreary George Will book about the symmetry of motion in baseball or how baseball is the smart man's sport. My expectations were very low. The first few pages quickly put that concern to rest. This is a page-turner that you will not put down. Have you ever wondered how the Oakland A's with a team that looks so unlike other major league teams can be a consistent winner? The A's General Manager Billy Beane found market inefficiencies and effectively exploited them. He recognized that other teams religiously used subjective measures and the wrong statistical measures in evaluating a player's worth to the team. Billy Beane found the right measures. And, he recognized that the measures being used by every other team inflated player's salaries not because they contributed to the team's bottom line but because they looked the part or their stats looked good on paper. He looked for talent where others were simply not looking and he found it. This allowed him to field a winning team for far less than others. He developed a strategy to exploit the system by seeking out players not deemed worthy by conventional measures. For instance, short stocky players did not fit the image of a baseball player. Because of their smaller strike zone they walk more frequently, meaning they get on base more often. While other teams were looking at batting average or RBIs, Billy Beane was using statistical measure such as on-base percentage to measure a player's contribution to a winning. He focused on what's important. Billy Beane recognized that using the traditional measures of a play's worth and the scout's reliance upon subject measures didn't match up with what really matter to winning. 5 stars (Cool Book, Great Information for Budding Sports Shooter) - I recently upgraded to a Canon Rebel to photograph my children's gymnastics and soccer events. I had this book on order before it was available, and just got it a few days ago. It has opened my eyes to what I need to actually take photos and not just use the automatic settings -- and it even contains information on these two sports! It explains a lot about digital photography in simple terms, which filled in several gaps for me about digital photography. Plus, my son is into skateboarding and my wife is a skier, so now I can figure out how to take photos of that as well. I also liked the information about what to do with the photos to process them, print them, and get them online. The method shown is easy and seems like it's not jsut meant for professionals; it includes point-and-shoot as well as big-camera info. It's great that there are so many photos and advice from many photographers, not just one. I've already recommended this book to my kids' coaches. Highly recommended! 5 stars (Just what I needed) - Cool book, densely packed with information that is actually useful. Maybe I can now start to live up to the capabilities of my D70 the next time I'm climbing. 5 stars (Deep, indulgent, & complete: A great value!) - This is my first Amazon review. I was motivated to write because this book is a superb resource for anyone wishing to improve their sports photography! As a "soccer mom" with two kids heavily involved in team sports, I had been wrestling with such issues as shutter lag, exposure in fading light, fast action, etc. (You know what I mean!)This book definitely showed me the way to solving those problems and many more -- and it's packed with inspirational action shots and tips from pro sports photographers. 4 stars (six secrets of successful betters) - it kept my intrest , however i expected it to cover more of what type of plays these guys make at the track. 4 stars (How to do it right.) - Frank R. Scatoni, Six Secrets of Successful Bettors (DRF Press, 2005) So you want to be a professional horseplayer. What's the first thing you should do? Well, okay, the first thing you should probably learn to do is become a decent handicapper. But if you want to take it to the professional level, sooner or later you're probably going to have to do what everyone needs to do if they want to make it big in any profession: network. Talk to the guys who have already made it. Get pointers on how to do so. Maybe talk to some people not in your chosen profession, but related to it, to get some more universal ideas on theory and practice as well. Previously, that step, unless you got lucky and had a pro in your backyard (not out of the question if your home track is Keeneland; if you frequent, say, Anthony Downs, however, you're going to be looking a long time), would have required a good deal of searching, a good deal of groveling (after all, the guy's not going to know you from Adam), and probably traversing the country a few times. A pretty expensive itinerary, to say the least, and you need to keep your bankroll up. But now Frank Scatoni has interviewed a bunch of them for you and boiled it all down into this book, which will cost you a whole lot less than plane tickets crisscrossing the country. Scatoni gets words from some of the best-known professionals in the game, both the pundits (Crist, Beyer, Quinn, etc.) and the guys who've never written a word, but still make their money at the game (Ernie Dahlman, especially, and some players who chose to remain anonymous). He also pulls in a player from the world of baseball betting, a former top Vegas odds-line maker (Roxy Roxborough), some poker and blackjack players, and the like.
