5 stars (A book for everyman) - By everyman I mean, of course, men and women, young and old, retired and working, republicans and democrats, believers and non-believers. This is a book I wish I'd found years ago (before it was written)! Almost everyone lives the divided life. (I suspect the Dalai Lama does not). As Palmer notes, sometimes we have to -- this is a choice we sometimes must choose to make. One of the reasons I love this book so is that Palmer does not have rigid judgmental expectations of us (we probably are harsh enough on ourselves). He offers guidelines and explanations for the human condition, and some help on getting through. Parker Palmer takes a long time Quaker practice -- the Clearness Committee - and uses it to provide for everyone a Circle of Trust. This mutual support network is unusual -- it isn't an advisory committee but more support for listening to that inner voice which we may joke about, but which exists (you know, the one you should have listened to, that nagging feeling, that annoying little warning sign). One thing that makes us crazy is the denial of that inner voice, our true self, the divided side of self that knows the questionable aspects of our work life, the one we hush up so we can get by and make a living. This isn't just a teacher's issue or a spiritual issue. For some it may be a spiritual divide; for others, a more humanistic one. In any case, we become emotionally, mentally and otherwise unbalanced if our day to day movements and choices feel separate from -- or in conflict with -- our beliefs and values, and yet we deny that they are so. We do not allow ourselves to hear that inner voice, afraid of the changes we might have to make. We smush it down, despite knowing intellectually that anything you smush down in one area pops up in another. This book offers recognition of this conflict we are in, and gives us ways we can listen without, necessarily, having to make changes that will make us walk ou... 4 stars (6-Day Body Makeover) - This diet works! Preparing the food takes a bit of time but is well worth it 5 stars (IT WORKS!!!!!) - I followed the plan with some slight modifications (flavored water) and lost 7 pounds in 6 days! More importantly though was that I learned how to eat healthy and control my portion sizes! I have been sticking to the plan for 2 weeks now and feel the best I have felt in a long time. I even sleep better since I started this plan. The plan works!!!! I tried to eat some junky greasy food last night (yes I cheated) and it made me sick. I don't even want that type of food anymore! Try the plan you will be very glad you did! 5 stars (It works but it is hard) - This diet works but it is way difficult to stick to. It is especially difficult if you have kids. I bought this as a way to see if I wanted to by the 6-week body makeover. I decided not to and went back on Atkins to keep my weight loss going. If you are just starting a weight loss program, I recommend this as a good diet to jumpstart with, because it works fast, teaches you to incorporate more vegetables into your diet and to eat more times per day so that you aren't ever hungry. ... 5 stars (Pronoia) - Amazing. I was just thinking the same thoughts! Actually quite a bit of it makes a lot of sense. There is a bit of "weirdness' to it, but since I'm a bit weird myself, I kind of like it. I'm recommending it to a few select friends, folks that are as "strange and wonderful" as I am. 5 stars (Pronoia and me) - Every time I pick up this book and start to read, my mood changes. I can be a gloomy guss at times and these wise words pull me right out of the shadows. I begin to feel lighter and less worried about the state of the world. I feel hope and maybe even start to hum a ditty. That's enough for me to recommend this book to you. Love to you all, tim 5 stars (Give Me More) - This is the perfect book to give as a gift, to your friends, enemies, family, and don't forget yourself. Full of stuff to make you feel good to be you now as you read the contemporary anecdotes that are consistently smart and constantly full of surprises. Of course, anyone who knows Rob Brezsny's work doesn't need to be convinced at all. Rob Brezsny, if you're reading this, I love you. Thank you for being born. ... 5 stars (Exciting Mindset) - A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink is an extraordinary book. Finally we are admitting that intelligence, performance, and yes--even success--can be achieved by those who appear to be more creative than academic. Pink goes to great lengths to explain his position relative to the kind of successful worker Americans must become in order to avoid being unemployed. Even better, Pink includes sections called Portfolios where the reader is given suggestions for ways to strengthen his/her "whole new mind." 4 stars (Food for thought) - Where the big issues are concerned -- how to revitalize the U.S. economy in the age of outsourcing, why isn't our educational system working and how do we go about fixing it, etc. -- I've always felt that it was more important to raise the right questions than to come up with quick answers. By that standard, this book is a winner. I think most of us would agree that the world of work (on the personal as well as the national level) has changed radically in the last 20 years. It's not a major logical leap to conclude that, rather than choosing to cultivate the skills and abilities that led to success in the "information age," we should broaden our range. It's possible to argue with the author's list of "six senses," but they're suggestions rather than prescriptions. (Nor are they touchy-feely nonsense removed from the practical world: the concept of "story," for example, is something that every spin doctor understands.) His personal anecdote about the drawing class has immense implications: we view the world (physical and mental) through a fog of preconceptions, and the ability to see what is REALLY there is crucial. I felt that the book wasn't as coherent and focused as his earlier one, but it's thought-provoking and stimulating -- and a good read, too. 4 stars (Richer life ahead) - So what are we mortals, especially those of us in the Western Hemisphere, supposed to do in a world where computers are fast a... To begin, there is a lot of helpful and interesting information regarding healthy eating in the beginning of the book. Don't skip past it--it's good information! The recipes themselves are laid out in an easy to understand format and there is nutritional information for every recipe. Also, the recipes don't have a huge amount of ingredients; thus, making it quick and easy!
