1 stars (Didn't receive what I paid for) - The seller advertised that they had a hardcover version and I recieved a paperback, international version.....False advertising!!!!!! 5 stars (The learning book) - " Organization Theory and Design " is a book every corporate member that has aspirations to better understand and contribute to his organization should own. I used this book studying a basic course of organizational behavior after the professor had referred to it as "the best text on the market". I found out he was right - the book is extremely well-written and its contribution to my understanding of the subject is invaluable. As it happened, I partly read older versions of the book to find out how every few years Daft updates his analysis, insights and examples of the ever changing and evolving world of organizations; for instance, the past example of IBM that served as the major opening example of an organization that has gone from the top of the world to the brink of disintegration in the beginning of the 90's, is replaced in this 8th edition with Xerox. Daft continues and presents the most recent developments in organizations' design - structures and management methods that have only emerged lately in response to the turbulences in the environments and competition worldwide. By making the changes in every edition "Organization theory and design" wins the title of this review - "the learning book" - that mirror images the main theme of this work - "the learning organization". Almost no organization can stand still in today's reality - managers and workers have to constantly think of better ways of doing things and learn from every source that bears knowledge and can give the organization a better competitive advantage. Things have never moved so fast and threats and opportunities have never been so immense. Competitors have to be efficient and different to survive and stay on the top. The structure of the book is designed to convey its ideas in the best p... 3 stars (It's... OK.) - The presentation of this book is excellent; It holds the reader's interest quite well. However, despite a recent "update", it shows it's age when the author regularly goes off on dot-com tangents, bringing the internet up in contexts that I believe the last few years have proven are not viable. Good grief, ppl. This isn't freaking 1997! We need a business text, not the wet dreams of a bunch of computer geeks turned businessmen! Anyways, if you are looking for a text with a lot of depth, look elsewhere. This book is to business textbooks what Quickbooks(c)(R)(TM) is to accounting software. In short, don't waste your money, unless you need it for a class. If so, be happy. If your prof teaches out of this, your tests will be very easy. 4 stars (Very Good book for small businesses) - It is good and it has a lot of tips to be succesfull in your business. It is easy to read and understand and it has many web sites addreses. 4 stars (Good cases, nice layout but slanted towards SBM positively.) - The cases are very good & a nice change of pace from the usual dry textbook reading. The color layout helps direct the reader towards points of interest and it is broken up into sections that are extremely readable. There is a definite slant toward the positive side of Small Business entrepreneuralship-not much is mentioned on the negative aspects. ... 5 stars (BUSINESS WRITING INSTRUCTION TAKES QUANTUM LEAP!) - As a college business communication instructor and corporate writing consultant of 20+ years, I feel my career is about to take a quantum leap forward with my discovery of this magnificent compendium of materials. Mary Ellen Guffey has done ALL the hard work! Juicy, readable text: done. Riveting "inside" information on cool corporations: done. Web-based support? Manuals? PowerPoints? Videos? Done. Fresh writing prompts, some packaged with the research already done? Done. With my old text, I've been drowning in an attempt to supplement and update and enrich the dated material enough to keep it relevant and arresting. Now I'm finding that I have plenty of time to interact with students over their own writing and presentations. I've always felt one-on-one and small-group interaction to be a huge part of my mission as a classroom teacher. Thanks to Mary Ellen Guffey, I'm able to do more of it, while spending less time overall on take-home work. Thank you, Mary Ellen, from the trenches--not just for a marvelous tool, but for a whole toolbox full of them. 5 stars (Perfect for the Classroom!) - I am an instructor at a business college, and this textbook (along with the accompanying website for students) proved to be wonderful for use in the classroom. The chapters were lively (even for a four-hour lecture class!) and provided real-world details and examples. The website accompanying the textbook has plenty of extra information for classroom use, as well as activities that students can do to review chapters and test their grammar skills. 5 stars (A Great Book for College Students) - Business Communication: Process and Product has been the best textbook I have worked with. Everything is presented in a clear and reader-friendly manner. Of all the books I have had to purchase for my courses, this was well worth the investment. Even though I recently earned my degree, and am no longer taking classes... 5 stars (A special collection about nothing special) - As a psychotherapist for 30 years and a mindfulness practitioner for nearly 10 years, I have read a lot of good books and articles on both subjects. " Mindfulness and Psychotherapy " is as clear and helpful in both disiplines as any I have encounted. The editors have done a 'mindful' job in selecting from an array of perspectives. Mindfulness is defined and contextualized for our western psychotherapeutic practice, while also placed in an historical and cultural framwork that informs and enlightens our understanding. Indeed the more philosophical essays are perhaps the strongest pieces in this marvelous compendium. We are reminded that the Buddah saw himself as a physician who sought to diagnose and find a cure for human suffering. Out of his own intimate encounter with suffering, he devised and revised a program that we in western psychological science are just now testing and finding curative-both for our clients and for ourselves. There is much here to be considered by all schools of psychotherapy. Paul Fulton presents an intriguing chapter on Mindfulness as Clinical Training. There are concise chapters on teaching mindfulness skills to clients (even children)with varying disorders, including panic, anxiety, depression, and psychophysiological problems. There is a comprehensive while managable 'Resources for the Clinician" appendix. Andrew Olendzki deserves special mention for his piece on "The Roots of Mindfulness." I had to stop highlighting as each page was yellowed with brightness. If you are a psychotherapist, a meditator, or thinking of practicing either, you will do well to read this wonderful book. ... 5 stars (Excellent book for college and your career) - Finally, a complete text that is always useful. I have read this book over and over... each time learning something new. It's great if you need a complete and extensive description or a quick overview. This book will go from your college backpack to the desk of your new exciting job! 5 stars (An Excellent Guide to Business Writing) - This book is an excellent tool for writing, especially for the non-native English writer. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a study guide with many examples that have been updated for the current business environment. The numerous samples and the grammar review are very helpful for studying the fundamentals. This book is extremely relevant in a business world crowded with a cornucopia of poor writing, misspelling, and incorrect grammar usage. My heartfelt thanks to Ms. Guffey for writing such an excellent guide. ... 5 stars (Great book) - I'm not a scholar, and I'm not Catholic. But I found Dr. Woods' book an engaging, interesting read that sheds new light on the Middle Ages and Renaissance years. It's the kind of work that provides (at least for a non-History major) an epiphany a page. You can read it in a week, and come away with a much broadened understanding of the topics explained. 5 stars (Woods's Reviewers Prove His Point!) - 1) One reviewer comments that Woods writes of anti-Catholic prejudice in America without giving evidence. This is a matter of historical record: from individual events like the burning of the Ursuline Convent to movements like the KKK (founded against Blacks, Jews, and Catholics), the Eugenics movement (ostensibly to rid society of the so-called "feeble-minded," but pushed by uber-eugenicist Margaret Sanger against "Southern Europeans" - i.e., Italian Catholics) - to the Know-Nothing party to the entire "nativist" movement in the US to the vicious and ignorant response to John F. Kennedy's campaign (and I am only scratching the surface!) anti-Catholicism in the US is well documented and would fill volumes. The same reviewer wants "evidence" of the ignorance about the middle ages - well, open just about any popular book on history and there it is - a thousand year blank between the Greeks and the self-proclaimed Renaissance! Many, many textbooks and even historians are just as bad - they skip over the rich, thousand-year tapestry of the Middle Ages - which had universities that in some ways were even freer intellectally than our "political correct" thought police of today - with apparently no knowledge whatsoever of what an exciting and even radical time it was (do you think it was easy for St. Thomas Aquinas to introduce Aristotelian ideas?) The Church did not stifle debate - they were its source! The evidence won't fit in an Amazon review - or in an encyclopedia sized volume. The author shouldn't have to provide evidence for the self-evident! ... 5 stars (Horsemanship's finest) - Clinton Anderson is one of the finest, most interesting trainers of horses and people that I have encountered. He is clear, concise and very funny. 5 stars (An easy-to-follow manual for horse training) - This is a great book that helps horse lovers deal with difficult horses. By going through a series of lessons with both an English and western rider, the reader understands the process via several points of view. Each horse and rider in the book has its own unique problems, and Anderson deals with each problem clearly and methodically. Its filled with colorful photographs and excellent illustrations. 5 stars (If you only buy one book on horse training, this is it) - It provides specific suggestions on how to work with your horse and what results you can expect. It addresses problems and provides detailed solutions in an easy to understand format. Adding the experiences of the two students in the book was a brilliant idea and helps the reader relate to the experiences in the book. Clinton Anderson is noted for his skill at communicating with both horses and people and this book is proof. Fun to read, great pictures, and well written. ... 3 stars (Not the best book on the subject and the price......) - I teach Stats 201 (Introduction to Business Statistics) and for years I used the textbook by Wiers, which I feel is the best in it's field. After numerous obsrvations by my colleagues in the department, we hope that will be going back to the previous author's book after the current stock of this one runs out. I find this book to be confusing, and it tends to jump around a lot rather than give a structured look at the process of learning Statistics. It pays little or no attention to the use of random numbers and the terminology is confusing. Perhaps the biggest drawback with this book is the price- almost 150 bucks for a textbook is outrageous. Buy the previous edition used- the difference is minimal, the price difference is significant. Better still- buy the book on the same subject by Wiers. Don't just take my word- compare the two....it's just my opinion. 5 stars (Best text of first year MBA) - Statistics is a mind-numbing subject. It's not easy, and not particularly exciting, either. This book doesn't exactly bring loads of fun to the subject, but it explains concepts well, provides pertinent examples, and offers plenty of useful practice problems. The authors and publishers have paid particularly close attention to detail, ensuring, for instance, that all diagrams are on the same page as the concepts they elucidate. This may be a small thing to some, but I find it tiresome that with so many texts you are forced continually to flip back and forth from diagrams on one page to pertinent information on another. I have a background in the Humanities and before the MBA stats course had not completed a math course since high school -- 20 years ago! (48th percentile quant GMAT!) My head was swimming after the first couple of lectures, but I sat down with this text, read it carefully, worked through ALL the problems, and received an A in the course. So far, I know of no other person that earned ...
