Bullying at School- What We Know and What We Can Do Understanding Children-s Worlds

4 stars (Good data but needs more specific examples) - I was elected to my local board of education and we recently received a credible complaint from a parent that harassment of her son was being overlooked by school administrators. Accordingly, I felt obliged to read up on the issue of bullying. This book sets forth both the problem and the recommended solutions. Prof. Olweus is Norwegian and his studies primarily involve Scandinavian schools. Accordingly, questions came to my mind such as "Is Norway a more homogenious society than the United States? If so, are there any differences in both the problem and the solutions in a more ethnically heterogeneous society?" I don't know the answers but, the reader should keep these issues in mind when reading this book. Prof. Olweus describes the problem and he sets forth well organized solutions to the problem which require involvement of teachers, administrators and parents, and further require communication with all students, even those who are neither bullies nor victims. The one problem I have with the book is that there are very few case histories and specific examples given. The book proposes solutions but does not provide a case history in which the specific solution was successfully applied to the problem at hand. Reliable data and sound recommendations are important but a few specific examples of how these recommendations worked would be helpful. For example, Olweus recommends that parents of a bully apply sanctions if the bullying behavior does not improve. He states, "The consequence should be associated with some degree of discomfort or unpleasantness, but corporal punishment must not be used." OK, fine; but what are specific examples of "discomfor or unpleasantness?" Where are the case histories giving examples? Without these, the book does not provide as fulfilling reading as it otherwise might. 3 stars (good design support book) - i found the book to be a good support when approaching a design. it lays out a series of axioms which help the designer to look at various design stratagies at the initial design stages. 5 stars (With absolute certitude a future "classic" design book) - If you want to make some money, I recommend you buy a couple copies of this book now and put them away for 10 years. With absolute certitude the "Universal Patterns of Design" (UPOD) will be a future "classic" design book. There are very few books that fit this category, but this will be one. The author's have done an absolutely stunning job of condensing the patterns format in codifying 210 design principles which human beings need to relate to products and works of art. This book rivals ANY other design work I have ever read. 5 stars (Simply the best training book on the subject) - From all the books I have on the subject, this is the first that can be used as training material. It's comprehensive, easy to use and read, and the reader isn't bored to death with lenghty oppinions by the authors. They present everything that you need to know in an easy and fun training program. 5 stars (Practical and not overwhelming) - It is very important to be able to follow people who have experience with a subject. If someone has done it before then I know I can do it too. Great book, well written. 5 stars ( Mastering Astral Projection vs Astral Dynamics) - While defiantly not as technical or detailed as his other book, Astral Dynamics, Mastering Astral Projection provides the techniques in a much more structured format. I had owned Astral Dynamics for over a year, periodically doing some of the exercises, but unable to make any real progress. By the end of the first month of using this new book my energy body was buzzing all day long and even my normal dreams were being regularly transformed into OBEs. The affirmations plus the additional exit techniques make this book unique from its predecessor, but most important for me was the day by day structure which forced me to take the time and do the work needed to be able to consciously project. The Maxwell Leadership Bible Developing Leaders From The Word Of God

5 stars (Very Good!!!) - This Bible is very good It really helped me out and even as a young person I was able to understand what John MAxwell was saying and I think that this is the right way to get anyone started on leadership or those who are interested in taking their skills to the next level! 5 stars ("Wow--far exceeded my expectations!") - I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this work exceeded all my expectations on what a Bible with such a title should look like! Maxwell is known as the peerless master of teaching leadership qualities. His secular works are required reading, and nothing comes close in excellence. How does he introduce such qualities into a Bible, though? Wonderfully! Maxwell takes every possible aspect of leaderhip (dozens and dozens) and ties them into Biblical characters and situations. There is enough teaching and study material here to occupy one's time for years, and none is fluff. This is more of a textbook than a Bible, but I guarantee--there is nothing else like it! Unlike so many other attempts which end up balancing a secular principle on a thread of Scripture, Maxwell really searches the Scripture, and the applications he gleans are relevant! If you ever hope to teach or learn virtually every leadership quality, tenet, or principle found in the Bible--your search is over. Maxwell has found them all! Also recommended: 'With Joseph in the University of Adversity' ('The Qualities of an Effective Leader' chapter), and 'The Mizraim Prinicples', authored by Dr. Jerry L. Harmony and Voice Leading

5 stars (Important text, but not for beginners) - One thing to understand about this book - it was not written with amazon.com beginners in mind. It is a college-level theory textbook, and is probably one of the few books that present basic theory concepts in a coherent, unified fashion. The "restrictions" some reviewers complain about, are actually part of a time-honored approach to teaching theory (think "species counterpoint"). To understand the book, a teacher needs to understand something of the ideas and approach of Heinrich Schenker (Schachter was one of Schenker's students). Unlike many theory books, which are into quick summaries and labels, this book is based on a deep understanding of how western tonal music works (at least from the Schenkerian perspective). Even basic concepts like scale degrees, intervals, and triads, are presented in such a way that important relationships among tones become evident. Chords are not merely chunks of notes that deserve a label, but are part of a larger, contrapuntal whole. Sticking with the early chapters, and especially getting a good grasp of the contrapuntal nature of even the most basic chords (insights gained into the similar "passing chord" functions of the V4/3 and viio6 chords, for example) are well worth the effort. Upon successful completion of the first 10 or 11 chapters, a student should have a new understanding of how tonal music works. 5 stars (A very strong text teaching the foundations of tonal music) - When I was a student at the University of Michigan School of Music in the late seventies and early eighties, we used the then brand new first edition of this book. I thought it was quite good then, and I believe this third edition to be an even better book. It treats the subjects of tonal harmony and voice leading quite well. 5 stars (Insight at a legible level) - I have found John Maxwells work to provide a great deal of useful thoughts, hints, and guidance, and all done without needing a masters degree in linguistics to decipher his language. Basically his book is telling us that being a leader and being a manager are not the same. Managers are short term oriented. They are concerned with the day to day operations and are adept at controlling organizing and monitoring resources. Horse Owner-s Veterinary Handbook

5 stars (Excellent health reference ) - I have several books in my library which cover equine health but this is certainly the most comprehensive. The book is set out in chapters which cover the major systems of the horse - respiratory, circulatory, nervous, reproductive etc Each chapter then starts with a complete explaination of that system and follows with an alphabetic listing of the problems or diseases. There are plenty of clear photos and diagrams and there are two further indexes to help you to find what you are looking for or to cross-reference information.
