1 stars (Only ever telling HALF the truth) - I am always shocked by non-Muslim writers when they write about Islam with such biased and present it as the truth! If you are going to discuss a topic academically do so critically, presenting all the information so people can make-up their own minds. I agree to a certain extent with the other reviewer (Zaid) when he says `The myth of Muslim tolerance' however I am a person who would not even like to label it under such a general title. I would prefer `The Myth of (the particular ruler of the period) tolerance', which is being far more honest. Are there no records of oppressive `MEN' throughout history in any country or in any religion? Or is this someone, having seen a market, just trying to make a buck by selling a book? Surely we have enough hate in the world! Here is a quote from the Koran. It is crystal clear. "Allah does NOT forbid you to deal JUSTLY and KINDLY with those who did NOT fight against you on account of your religion and did NOT drive you out of your homes. Verily, Allah LOVES those who deal with fairness (Surah 60: Verse 8)' Just as in the Bible - in the Koran there are verses that state - an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth etc. In other words you can give as good as you get, but it clearly states you cannot go beyond that and there is a clause! - if you forgive, forget and treat your offender with gentleness and kindness you get a far greater reward from Allah! How can this be a religion of violence? I advise people to not rely on books written about Islam, but instead pick up the Koran and read it - make up your own mind - don't let others do it for you. You owe it to yourself not to have your thinking molded by someone else. I rated it one star - nice picture on the cover. 1 stars (People with little background....) - I am quite alarmed by both this book as well as the reviews it has received. The book attempts to draw conclusions by assuming the conclusions are presumtively correct. There ... 3 stars (Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner) - This book is interesting, but it is far too "testbooky" and would benefit from being more focused on specific "how to" examples of treatment plans as do many other similar efforts. The text makes interesting reading, but, it didn't provide the concrete examples I expected. 5 stars (Another great tool for the practioner's tool box.) - Research suggests that an ever increasing number of practioners are relying on tools such as this to help formulate treatment plans. As a graduate student, what I find useful about this book is that after you study a particular disorder---from the DSM-IV-TR itself, a good psychopathology text (see Davison & Neal's Abnormal Psychology), and the DSM's Diagnostic Criteria handbook, The Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner completes the loop. I bought this book after taking a case studies class where the instructor did an absolutely miserable job in showing us the rhyme and reason behind a good treatment plan. Not satisfied that I knew enough about this critically important piece in the counseling process, I did some research and found this book to be the most highly regarded in this genre. As subsequent classes deal with child and adolescent psychopathology, family psychopathology, etc. etc. I will be getting the treatment plans that correspond with these issues. 5 stars (Thank You.) - Just what I needed, such a time saver now I can actually use my brain power to help not just write about it--Thanks again. ... 5 stars (A new classic) - If change were easy, a lot of us (psychologists, counselors, health care providers) would be out of work. Still, that doesn't stop us from complaining about those clients and patients who just won't do what we think is in their best interest. Motivational Interviewing, a "client-centered, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation," was developed specifically to help faciliate change in "resistant" populations and has been embraced by addictions treatment and general health care professionals alike. The entirely re-written, highly readable, second edition of MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING updates readers on the state of the art and science of MI, and provides a practical guide for helping people to make all kinds of behavior changes. The book opens with a brief review of the converging lines of inquiry that supported the development of MI and an overview of core concepts such as readiness to change, ambivalence, and an interpersonally-based understanding of motivation. The second section is a guide to practice. While "spirit" is emphasized over technique, this section is filled with practical advice on how to increase motivation for change while minimizing resistance. A new chapter on ethics addresses the concerns that arise when attempting to motivate clients to do something they aren't sure they want to do. Consistent with the method's client-centered approach, the third section constitutes a chapter on learner-centered training in MI. The fourth section - comprising about half the volume - includes diverse contributed chapters on applications of MI. These include a discussion of MI and the Stages of Change model with which it is often associated; an excellent review of efficacy research in MI; adaptations of MI such as brief advice and MI with couples or groups; and applications with specific populations and settings. The application chapters necessarily vary in format but share in common careful consideration of the rationale for M... 5 stars (Concise and Complete) - I'm a medical doctor currently working in indigenous comunities in southern venezuela. I attend to a wide range of medical and non medical problems. I have used the CMDT almost daily since working here. It has proven to be complete and concise, wich is a great feature when you need to pack your stuff and take a boat to the next comunity!. It is not a review, but it will give you the initial ideas to start investigating or treating. So if you're working in a relatively isolated area, where getting seconds opinions is dificult and takes time, doubt no more, this book will be a great help to you. 5 stars (Great Resource for Health Care Professionals. ) - This text gives quick and dirty coverage on an extensive range of topics. I keep it on my desk and use it often to research how illnesses are diagnosed, the signs and symptoms and treatment. 5 stars (CMDT vt Tierney,McPhee and Papadakis) - This is an excellent work which documents nearly 1000 maladies- their essential manifestations, general considerations, prognosis, clinical findings, the differential diagnosis and treatment. The work would be valuable so that the physician does not omit any important elements of the overall treatment plan. Optimal drug doses are cited together with annotated references, a general approach to the patient and common symptomatology. Surgical risk factors are outlined in considerable detail. The acquisition would be an important part of any personal medical library. The authors provide a current rendition with brand new references, up-to-date treatments/methods and medical technology. ... 1 stars (Wasted Space) - I was very disappointed with the content and layout of this book. The amount of wasted pages for 'workspace' is excessive, but considering the lack of true content, I assume they needed to fill pages with something. 5 stars (Purchased by Spouses Group) - Our spouses group purchased this item to donate it to a Psycology Clinic at our local hospital. The clinic was very excited to receive it since they specifically requested this book. 5 stars (powerful, easy tools conquer depression/anxiety) - After years in therapy and various methods (Freudian, Jungian, etc.), it was finally Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) that helped me stop the negative, worrying (a facet of anxiety) voices that blared incessantly in my mind. I can not recommend this book enough. Its simple exercises will have you seeing the fallacy of your thoughts, which are what determine your mood. The book (and CBT's) superbly simplistic idea is that your THOUGHTS are what control your MOODS. Control your thoughts, and you control your moods. But before we can do this, we have to slow down enough to take the time to see where our thoughts are coming from. This book and its exercises help us find where we are simply WRONG in the thoughts we have about ourselves which lead to depressed or anxious mood. These exercises will help you determine your "hot thoughts," (automatic thoughts you hold about yourself that are linked to depressed/anxious mood), will help you examine evidence for and against your thoughts, and then help you use this evidence to create NEW THOUGHTS which ought to in turn help you create NEW MOODS. These techniques are amazingly simple but also incredibly powerful. If you feel stuck in "talk therapy" analysis and can not seem to change the way you think about yourself, this book is for you! However, you should also seek a trained COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPIST to teach you the techniques to literally CHANGE your thought process. Anxiety and depression are ... 5 stars (Here's what I thought....) - Book discusses a very specific way of treating back pain. In short, you do these backward bending motions which is suppose to have an effect on the discs in your spine. In addition, you sit up straight and watch your posture. All in all, it didn't help me much, but I do know many people it has helped- so I say give it a try. Also liked "Treat Your Own Knees" if you have knee pain. 5 stars (i am taking responsibility for my back) - until now i have been dependent on my osteopath to fix me......this is a helpful book...i have spent a great deal of money on dr. and massage therapist treatment until......i found a percussion massager with infra red heat for $29.95, this immediately relieved muscle spasms. found at wally world after i had purchased a professional mini thumper that was so heavy i could not hold.....i do the exercises in book...thank you mr. mckenzie for writing this book..........a chronic back ache woman....... 5 stars ( Treat Your Own Back ) - Very clear and useful information. 4 stars (Effective for higher functioning, motivated borderlines) - I work in a residential treatment facility for SPMI (all clients also have at least one Axis I diagnosis), and most of our clients have too low of intellectual functioning to grasp many of the DBT concepts. As an intellectual and a practicising Buddhist, I enjoy Linehan's text (especially the focus on Zen aspects: primarily mindfulness). I have encountered many therapists who have succesfully utilized DBT with other client populations. Dr. Linehan has poured years of experience and research into this text. For my clients, I have to significantly alter and simplify many of the tennants of this treatment. If you are reading this, you know that Borderlines are a growing (and very timeconsuming) population of consumers and this text should be in the library of all mental health workers. 5 stars (Fascinating!) - I found this book to be so fascinating and eye opening. Although this book is written for those who TREAT borderline personality disorder, I think it will be very helpful to those who have the disorder. I know it has been a great learning tool for me, and I suffer from BPD. Marsha Linehan shows an amazingly compassionate understanding towards the mind of a person with this disorder. I found myself astonished at her incredible ability to understand the way I think. I think the author is nothing short of a genius. The book is great...but it is complicated and it is not a good book for those who don't enjoy intensely intellectual reading. If you are looking for a book to give you quick facts, this is not the book for you. You must enjoy reading to get into this book. 1 stars (A Total Waste of Paper) - At first I thought the author, Marsha Linehan, was a mental patient herself or perhaps foreign-born because this book is so badly written. It's full of new age cliches, tossed in with Eastern mysticism and the author's own ramblings. The author repeats the same words and phrases over and over again,... 4 stars (A Starting Point and for Getting Unstuck) - These 'planners' are a great place to start when designing a treatment plan. They are the equivalent of a 'manual' that refreshes memory, assists with language and format- and gets you past the block. Its weaknesses lie in its treatment methods and assessment paradigm. The chapters as they delineate conditions and DSMIV categories were well chosen. Academic disorders received appropriate emphasis within the total clinical perspective. So what's missing? The advances of neuropsychiatry for one. The Ungame and the other published materials are offered in the back for purposes of purchase and review. The methodologies are limited to play therapy and techniques like the "ungame." The precision, as in, what and how such activities will yield is just too vague and rather dated. A nonverbal learning disability, for example, will need a qualitatively different play activity than a child with disorder of written expression, or autistic spectrum. No more one size fits all. The book suffers from a fixation on the psychodynamic approach which we know from research has not effectively met the needs for many disturbed kids. All patients, but more so for children, need successes to undergo change. Brain science has given us more precise tools to assess where those weaknesses lay and therefore a map to gain greater insight into the nature of the condition. Interfamilial discord, then, may be a result of poor communication or an inability to model behaviors- to treat all such dynamics similarly is generally a waste of time. Children have not got the resources to be in such confusing and often haphazard services. The basic product then can be used for limited support and I see that as a solution in writing treatment plans. I think a good updating would do the trick. 5 stars (An excelent source for terapists) - I have found this book of tremendous help as I have worked with children in clinical practice. I higly recommend ... 5 stars (this is partner to successful treatment) - If you have been diagnosed a BPD this is your companion to adequate treatment.Keep in mind this book is not to be used alone. Once a DBT specialist is in your life this book becomes 50% treatment. The cornerstone to functioning and the reference you can forever use when treated for BPD it is my belief and Dr. Linehan's that you can live a normal life. Discard I hate u don't leave me and seek out this treatment. Then this book will someday be reviewed by u. 5 stars (Finding What Works) - Knowing how to access a place inside to relieve symptoms of long standing illness is pure genius, and this book is the road map to spiritual identification and release of problems, just by learning how to relax and let the spirit do it's job. I love it. 4 stars (Wouldn't it be nice.....) - That's the beginning of an old Beach Boys' song and maybe a good response to the fine research and development of what is called "dialectical behavioral therapy." It's a fine paradigm and tacitly acknowledges that effective therapy is not a one hour a week process, but an on-going one with multi-modal tasks and treatments, and ideally with a therapy team. This book is a great handbook, but NASA publishes excellent handbooks on operating space vehicles: but it doesn't do much good if you can't afford a launchpad (more on this metaphor in a moment). The book clearly lays out the task of the therapist and client. The client should do homework assignments, self-monitoring, reflection, etc. That is all fine and good if one has a research grant and a "captive audience" so to speak, but in the real world, how many people could adhere to such a regimen. As insurance company allowances for mental health severely limit length of treatment and quality of treatment, and with the average American's work week having expanded ten hours per week since the early 1980's (see "The Future of Success"-Robert Reich), who are the clients that will truly benefit from ...
