3 stars (I wanted to love this book, but...) - ...I got so weary of the incessant complaining about the current government administration. I would've rather she filled those pages with more stuff about her family, her mom, her son. But every time she turned around she was complaining about the government. It was the same kind of thing that really hurt Tony Hendra's "Father Joe" in my opinion, but here it's much more damaging to the flow of the book. Once I "kinda" got past that it was a great read, but not nearly as memorable as her previous memoir, "Traveling Mercies." Worth a read if you love Annie's writing, and I do, but probably to be missed otherwise. 4 stars (For Lamott Readers, But Certainly NOT For Bush Fans) - Anne Lamott is a writer's writer. And what I mean by that is that she writes on a level most writers would LOVE to make it to. She's easy to read while, at the same time, having a deep message, and a raucous sense of humor. I got hooked on her years ago when I read BIRD BY BIRD, a book that I still refer to often whenever I need to "get real" about my own writing life. I was pleased to learn that these are short memoirs of her life, a collection of short stories. The short story form seems to be making a modest comeback, and I loved the fact that a collection of them made it to the New York Times' list, too. But lets get into the meat and potatoes of the book now ... This is a look at Ms. Lamott's life through her own eyes, and she wears everything on her sleeve, including her disdain for the Bush administration, her dislike of young children, her poor motherhood skills, and her struggles with faith. Examples ... Lamott has to deal with the death of her Alzheimer's mother, pulling the urn that contains her mother's ashes out of her closet. And as she does, she reminisces about the final months of her mother's life: "Her purse was a weight, ballast; it tethered her to the earth as her mind floated away. It was also health and preparedness, filled... 5 stars (Pronoia) - Amazing. I was just thinking the same thoughts! Actually quite a bit of it makes a lot of sense. There is a bit of "weirdness' to it, but since I'm a bit weird myself, I kind of like it. I'm recommending it to a few select friends, folks that are as "strange and wonderful" as I am. 5 stars (Pronoia and me) - Every time I pick up this book and start to read, my mood changes. I can be a gloomy guss at times and these wise words pull me right out of the shadows. I begin to feel lighter and less worried about the state of the world. I feel hope and maybe even start to hum a ditty. That's enough for me to recommend this book to you. Love to you all, tim 5 stars (Give Me More) - This is the perfect book to give as a gift, to your friends, enemies, family, and don't forget yourself. Full of stuff to make you feel good to be you now as you read the contemporary anecdotes that are consistently smart and constantly full of surprises. Of course, anyone who knows Rob Brezsny's work doesn't need to be convinced at all. Rob Brezsny, if you're reading this, I love you. Thank you for being born. ... 5 stars (Tapping the Healer Within) - Excellent and easy to use. A must for people who feel that the body has the power to heal itself from inside and are tied of the medical professions inadequacies. 5 stars (A therapy that works) - I am a Medical Doctor of Ecuador and I`ve been using the method for a few months and it really works in the percentages that Dr Callahan mentions in his book. It is a self help book, I think that the reason why some of the people who mention that the method didn't work on them was that in some cases the help of a professional trained in the method is required. Most of the time you can practice in your own home, but other times you really need help, the acupressure points need to be tapped in the rigth spot, if you tapp a little far away you are not producing the effect that you need. So give a try, if it is not effective look for someone trained in the method. Fernando Camacho MD 5 stars (Caution....must have an OPEN MIND to use properly) - I find it terribly sad that so many have ego problems with using and understanding these techniques. They are simple, profound, and effective IF USED PROPERLY. Roger Callahan is the "godfather" of EFT, and Energy Medicine in general. Here he shares his exciting discoveries as a practical guide for self-help of a multitude of issues confronting the average human. One of the primary steps to using this effectively for yourself is to keep your mind steadily focused on the issue you are attempting to heal. Since most of us have trouble with this type of "one pointed" focus (our minds can bounce around at lightening speed!), we may have trouble getting results, and consider this a failure. It isn't! As a suggestion to the person with the blushing problem...a focus on the "feeling" that comes before the actual blushing would most likely work. However, it sounds like this person has a lot of trouble with embarassment in general....and may need to work on a multitude of aspects before getting relief. I find... 5 stars (really meaningful book) - I absolutely loved this book. It was meaningful and really tied together for me many of the disparate ideas of religion and metaphysics. Accessible and a keeper. 3 stars (Read God Without Religion Instead) - I don't know, folks. Dyer certainly had a lot of good intentions in writing this book, and his love of people shines through. I can't even say I disagree with anything he says implicitely. The problem is first that nothing he says is new. He creates new words to describe old things, but no new concepts or new thoughts or ideas in the mind of the reader. And creating a new lexicon is not what the world needs today. Also, his methods, on both a practical and theoretical level, of affirmation are not as scientific as other methods presented by other authors. This leads me to why I suggest reading God Without Religion instead. All of the Power of Intention, vastly improved, can fit in one section of one chapter of God Without Religion. It is the greatest book not only on spirituality, but human existence that I, and many others I am meeting, have ever read. It has what so many books, including Dyer's, lacks: new knowledge. Read it and find out for yourself. It will take you places you've never been. And on the subject of affirmation, which God Without Religion presents in the broader context of world religions, miracles and politics, and the human mind and the way the cosmos works, while Dyer advises us to "intend" things for our future, God Without Religion undermines the idea of division of time, pointing out that affirmations work best when they are admitted to be about the present. Instead of simply promoting positive thinking, you are shown how to affirm here and now whatever you think you are only going to get in the future, regardless of any sensory evidence to the contrary that your affirmation is not actualized. In other words, you will never "get better" or "be successful." You are successful and well now, or never.... 5 stars (The Best) - From my experience I would sincerely say that this is not only the best book ever written about "A Course in Miracles" but one of the best spiritual books EVER written. This is because it does the seemingly impossible. It makes the heretofore arcane "A Course in Miracles" completely understandable to both the novice and the experienced student by bringing it into the vernacular. What was confusing before is now crystal clear. Writers have been trying to do that for 30 years, but this book is the first to really succeed. Second, it is of great value to those who aren't interested in A Course in Miracles by setting the record straight about Jesus, who never intended to start a religion, and making universal spiritual truths more clear for everyone. The Disappearance of the Universe talks the way that people really talk, and in doing so brings everyone a message that can't be missed - if you're ready for it. 1 stars (Should be called the "Book of Lies and Deceptions") - Arten pg. 55: "What if you don't try to convince people to believe anything? Start writing it like it's just a story - as though you made it up. Then tell people they made you up. It's all made up. That's the point, my brother." Got through 100 pages before I decided not to waste any more of my time. This book is full of contradictions, the writing is crude, the authors attitude towards heavenly messengers is ridiculous. How many people on earth if they TRULY had heavenly messengers pop out of thin air would talk to them as crudely as Gary does. Gary's belief that he's witty and humorous is the illusion. After 100 pages I was still waiting to find something NEW and enlightening. There is nothing new or enlightening here. 5 stars (Wonderful Book of Ideas) - When reading this book, I suspended judgment whether it was a "true" book, or pure fiction. I also did not care where the ideas came from. Perhaps they were channeled. Perhaps not. Perhaps all great work is channeled. In t... 5 stars (wonderful!) - This book was wonderful! I would recommend it to anyone, especially those who don't like Christians or for Christians to challenge them to go deeper and find real freedom. It's worth it, whatever the cost. 5 stars (One Man's "Garbage", Another Man's Treasure ) - This is one of those books that brings out the beauty and honesty of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Don understands that the only way we can survive this world is through community in the body of Christ, and the only way that can happen is through honesty. Miller uses his testimony to tackle some tough issues like freedom and artistic creativity. He also reminds us through expereinces with his 'liberal friends' what Christ looks like when it comes to social action and where many follwers of Christ have been taking naps. "There is no holiness but social holiness". Miller is able to paint a picture of who he is in a way that, when you put down the book, you feel like you just had a conversation with him. This book isn't scripture, it's an autobiography [Which means it's about his personal life experiences :) ]. Donald Miller's testimony is one that has the potential to impact many people. Pick up this book today! 5 stars (Not a 5-step guide to living the Christian life - just one person's perspective on life and Christianity.) - After reading some of the reviews posted, I decided to write one of my own. I'd like people to remember that this book isn't a step by step guide on how to live the Christian life. I don't think Donald Miller's intentions (if I may be so bold) are anything other than getting the reader to think about his or her own flawed thinking about Jesus and Christianity. Some of the reviewers (Garbage comes to mind) ironically fall into that fundamentalist, legalistic category that Miller has written about in his book. I think Miller just wants us to be as honest with ourselves regarding our beliefs and lives and direction, as he has been with hi... 4 stars (Let Anne tell her story) - God rescued Anne from a horrible situation. And the thing that broke the ice, so to speak, was something that most church-goers like myself hardly think of as a missionary outreach: the simple act of singing songs of praise to God when we are gathered together. At that point in her life, Anne wasn't much interested in hearing preaching, but the music, and then the love, drew her in. God, in his sovereign will, chose to use a Christian congregation far outside of my "box" to reach Anne. And as the story goes on, we see that Anne also has her God in a pre-conceived box. But I, from my conservative point of view, have to be merciful, remembering what God has brought Anne, and me, out of. Every Christian is in recovery, from all the crap of our past whatever it was. And with God's help, we are growing, learning to love those who don't think like we do, and slowly realizing that God is beyond any of our human boxes: totally awesome, pure, wise, loving, forgiving, patient.... Anne Lamott, I, every Christian, are "traveling" on that road to greater faith, and we are in constant need of God's "mercies." 5 stars (A real conversion experience, in all its messiness) - Salvation and baptism are for people stained with sin, people who have been walking too long on the wrong path. It's amazing that Christians, who know this about salvation, fail so regularly at depicting what a conversion experience is like. Lamott tells a lot of stories and shares a host of ruminations in this book, but her account of her conversion experience is the highlight and is more than worth the price of the book. 5 stars (We're Only Human) - Anne Lamott style of writing and style of life make this collection of essays a delight to read. She's honest, humble, humorous and spiritual-all wrapped up in a nice package. Every person reading this book will identify with the life challenges, questions about faith and quirky happenings that Anne speaks about. She ...
