First and Last Things

Quote, "Recently I set myself to put down what I believe. I did this with no idea of making a book, but at the suggestion of a friend and to interest a number of friends with whom I was associated. We were all, we found, extremely uncertain in our outlook upon life, about our religious feelings and in our ideas of right and wrong...

The Tipping Point- How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

1 stars (Please - Stop Him Before He Writes Another Book!) - This is the second Gladwell book I've read, and unfortunately its as bad as the first (Blink!). His basic point is that little things can make a big difference. Gladwell's problem, however, is that he doesn't know what he's writing about, and it's a fatal flaw. For example, early in this book he relates how a "small change" in Brooklyn policing strategies turned into a "large drop" in crime. In reality, "broken windows," accompanied by much more data-driven and administrative follow-up policing referred to by Gladwell was a large (not small change). The reality is that "broken windows" policing ended up going far beyond simply pursuing those with minor violations (eg. fare-beating) to include studying crime patterns (location, timing, etc.), setting improvement goals, and regular high-level follow-up. Secondly, "Freakonomics" research concluded that the crime-rate decline began BEFORE the change in policing, and that much of the decline was due to increased staffing. Gladwell also attributed the decline to improved economic conditions - however, no such decline accompanied prior economic good times. Finally, Gladwell offered no explanation of why similar steep declines in crime occurred across the U.S. at the same time - without regard to any change in policing! Another of Gladwell's problems is that he doesn't seem to understand anything about statistics. The fact that a change in policing suposedly occurred at the same time as a decline in crime rates seems to be "proof" of causation for Gladwell. One of the first lessons in statistics, however, is that "correlation does not imply causation." Summarizing, the book starts out poorly, and goes downhill from there - increasingly boring, confusing, and totally lacking in credibility. Don't confuse, aggravate, misinform yourself with this book 5 stars (This Little Book will Make a Big Difference) - This fascinating book is an investigation into ...

First Things First- To Live- to Love- to Learn- to Leave a Legacy

5 stars (A MUST Read) - Having read more than a dozen books on the subject of mission statements, goal setting and time management, and also having taught workshops on the subject myself, this is the one book that I find most useful. As some other reviewers point out, it may seem a little heavy in parts, but the details are well worth studying. As the authors emphasize, time management doesn't begin with managing time, it begins with finding our own individual purpose, establishing our mission, and setting our goals to achieve that mission. This is more than a "how to" book. It is a "why to" book. It has the ability to persuade people that they need to set written goals. In teaching young adults, I have found some that insist they don't need written goals and that they certainly don't need a mission statement. My response is to encourage them to read this book. I appreciate how persausive the authors are in encouraging the reader to find the "main thing" without getting trapped into becoming a success in just one small area rather than fulfilling four areas of the "quadrant," including physical, social, mental and spiritual. Moreover, they bring home the necessity of finding balance and staying balanced in the different roles we have in our lives. After you read this book, I recommend that you consider reading "The Power of Full Engagement" by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, and "Finding Flow" by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. You won't be disappointed. 5 stars (A Revolutionary Resource!) - As someone who juggles many different responsibilities and a crowded calendar, I approached this title with high expectations. I was not disappointed! Covey here offers a revolutionary resource for time management. Rather than following the standard theme of how to do more in a given period of time, the author emphasizes the importance of setting priorities and planning ahead. His analogy of the clock and the compass is priceless in describing the two elements that shou...

Getting Things Done- The Art of Stress-Free Productivity

5 stars (still using method over 1 year later) - This is a perfect personal organitional method. It is so simple it could have been described in 1 chapter. But its good to be convinced of the pitfalls of disorder and the stress it produces. There are a few parts I haven't put in place yet. I am a teacher and I was totally overwhelmed with paperwork and seemingly endless amount of things I needed to do to prepare lessons, teach these 7th graders all day, grade, keep records, reports, deal with the ridiculous amount of paperwork they are constantly piling on top of you: memos, curriculum, behavior plans, tardy forms, referrals, progress reports, IEPs, IAPs, calendars, schedules, personelle forms, insurance, sign this, fill out this, parent call logs, and on and on and on and on you get the picture. etc etc etc for a new teacher it was quite overwhelming plus i was dog tired after teaching all day! I went to office depot after school one day and saw this book and got it on a whim. The INBOX, the one filing system, the trash it, act on it or defer it. These SAVED MY SANITY. It is amazing what an organized life with no loose ends can do for you mentally and physically. The philosphy and application of Allen provides are priceless priceless PRICELESS and its not complicated!!! 5 stars (Most effective getting-organized book I've ever read) - This book takes an entirely different tack from most other getting-organized books. Other authors advocate figuring out the big picture first ... but most of us are so busy with daily fires that the luxury of high-level goals seems beyond our grasp. With his bottom-up approach, David Allen starts you off you a few simple ways to get a handle on your everyday tasks -- so that you can free up enough mental space to even start to think about your long-term goals. Once your head is clear and you're no longer burning so much energy on tracking things that are better tracked externally, other books (like Stephen Covey...

When Bad Things Happen to Good People

4 stars (Great Packing Job) - THe books arrived in great condition. I ws jsut a little suprised at how long they took to arrive but other then that all was well. 5 stars ( When Bad Things Happen to Good People ) - Harold Kushner is an excellent author. This audio cd is excellent to listen to in your car or when you are alone and too tired to read. It is so touching and real, you will want to listen time and time again, just to keep things in perspective, especially in this day and age of tragedy. 5 stars (clear sensitive and insightful) - This book helped a great deal during a difficult time in my life and helped me to get to other side. I highly recommend this book as well as everything else he's written -Kushner mopre than any other writer helped me to develop my own conception of and relation to God. ...

21 Things I Wish My Broker Had Told Me - Practical Advice for New Real Estate Professionals

2 stars (One piece of advice...avoid it - Elizabeth and Jameson Thottam) - This is lousy entry book for Real Estate professionals. Myself and my husband, Jameson Thottam (he used to work with Real Estate firms such as The Loan Page, Homestore and IndyMac Bank), have been dabbling in residential real estate and we found this book a horrible start in terms of teaching the core secrets (i.e., valuation, SEC II stat techniques, tax implications and flippying and insider trading tips of how to find/negotiate the best properties). Trust us, Elizabeth and Jameson Thottam....we've been in the business for the last two years now and would not recommend this book. -The Thottam family 5 stars (Great for Newbies) - This book is a great way for new agents to know what they are getting into. The book covers a multitude of issues that people outside of the industry don't know about including what to expect (and what not to) from your broker. There's very little detail in the book, but it's a great overview and, quite frankly, you'd be hard pressed to get all of the information about real estate into 10 books, much less one. This is a terrific book for setting your expectations in a realistic place. It covers everything from planning your career change to how to hold an open house. I'd highly recommend it for new agents just getting started or for anyone thinking about getting started in the industry. I offer it as a suggestion to all the new agents I train. 4 stars (Very Good Book for New Licensees) - I am just got my license, and I can tell you, alot of the 'how to be successful in real estate in your first year' and from the various seminars I have attended, they all basically say the same thing - Market yourself, prepare for the rough patches, work, work, work to see results. Nothing really earth shattering or inspiring. But I liked this book because of it's honesty. Alot of what you hear and read in other books, on how to market your self and get leads - this b...

Discussion Guide- Execution -- The Discipline Of Getting Things Done

1 stars (What a rip-off ! Utter Waste of Time.) - Utterly worthless time waster, completely without merit. I read the book and expected more than a small handfull of quotes with page numbers. Nothing more than an infantile cut and past that is at best incomplete ... I'm dead serious when I say my middle school daughter would have done a better job. If you read the table of contents of Execution, you will have more information than this leaflet provides. The leaflet asks such provocative questions as 'explain examples given in the book.' There is nothing new I can use here. I hate time wasters, and I hope that by adding my review I can save you some of your valuable time. 1 stars (Misleading waste) - The above item was ordered and upon review it is clearly worthless and without merit. I have read the book and expected more than a cut and past of content that in many cases does not reflect the authors' most salient's concepts. I recommend, based on other comments found on your website regarding other ebooks of this nature, that you seriously consider not offering material of this nature. It is only hurting your reputation. 5 stars (Time saved--much more than the cost of this e-doc) - I've suggested this article to a number of friends who needed to do something in a hurry on leadership. You can use it to personalize a discussion you have to conduct--and with it, do it in a very short time. An hour of my time saved is worth a lot more to me than the cost of this doc. It's what I love about e-docs, given how little time I have for anything. And now to sign off--writing this is time consuming, but looking ahead, worth it because I want to keep these e-docs coming. ...

Tim O-Brien-s -The Things They Carried-- A Study Guide from Gale-s -Short Stories for Students- Vol

3 stars (Danielle's summary review) - The things they carried is a great book by Tim O'Brien. Jimmy cross has a crush on a college girl named Martha, he knows she will never return his love because she majors in English and went to a movie on a single date to see Bonnie and Clyde and he put his hand on her knee and she looked at him and ordered him to pull his hand back. Now cross is in Vietnam and he really misses martha. The things that that they carried in thier packs depended on what kind of constitutions and personalities they had, like marijuana, bug repellant etc.. The stronger men got to carry the guns. Cross was the map keeper and basically had to protect his men. Lavender got shot, but cross didnt really care because he was focused to much on Martha and how much that he missed her. The things they carried is basically and introspective memory story and self-conscious examination of the methods and reasons behind storytelling. The narrator is unreliable; he speaks of the necessity of blurring truth and fiction in a true war story. The settings are during the late 1960's and late 1900's in Vietnam and Massachussets. The major conflict is the men of the Alpha Company, especially Tim O'Brien, grapple with the effects - both immediate and long term - of the vietnam war. Themes are physical and emotional burdens;fear of shame as motivation; the subjection of truth to storytelling. 5 stars (The Things They Carried) - This book gives outstanding insight into rhe Vietnam War and the people that served in it. The Things They Carried is a very enjoyable book; after you get through the first 10 or so pages you'll want to read the whole thing. I'm not normally into reading books, but I really liked this book and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a well told set of stories. Meaning, this book isn't just one story, but instead a set of stories told through the eyes of multiple characters. Regardless of whether you like that in a book or not, READ THIS BOOK! ...

Execution- The Discipline of Getting Things Done

4 stars (Clear, to the point, relevant examples) - This was a great book on how to integrate the mentality of how to execute into the culture of an organization. It makes it very easy to compare your organization to what is ideal, see how you can change and highlight areas of improvement. Over all a great buy. It could have had more on developing leaders within a corporate setting but for critiquing an organization and learning what it takes to get to the next level it was conprehensive. 5 stars (One of the best business books for the start of this new millenium) - I recommend this book to all executives in SMEs or big corporations. They provide a powerful insight on how to deliver performance in the organization. Must buy! 3 stars (Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done) - Interesting perspective on corporate business. Unique complilation with text and the author's quotes. ...

Jewish Literacy- The Most Important Things to Know About the Jewish Religion- Its People and Its His

5 stars (Christian point of view) - I found this book very informative. Don't let the size scare you, it's any easy read. Everything on the basics of Judaism is in this book. Everything from history to religion. It left me wanting to know more....Rabbi Joseph Telushkin also includes a wonderful, useful index and references some interesting further reading books. This book has become a permanent part of my library. Highly recommned! 3 stars (Orthodox Jewish Literacy ) - As a non-Jew interested in getting a better grasp of all of the traditions and beliefs of the Jewish faith I'm glad I read through this book first before buying it. It is written by an Orthodox rabbi and assumes an Orthodox, literalist approach on all topics, the ordination of women and homosexuality to cite just two of the more controversial issues. Now, this would be fine if the book were marketed as an Orthodox text but it is advertised as a comprehensive book of general Jewish wisdom for everyone. What is a Jew? by Morris Kertzer (5th edition) and updated four times since 1953 is a much more comprehensive and wide-ranging introductory book that covers the stance of each branch of Judaism to various issues organized in an easy question and answer format. It makes very clear all the differences between the different branches (Orthodox, Conservative and Reform) and how they approach various moral/ethical/social issues. Since (according to a recent poll) about 85% of Jews consider themselves either Reform or Conservative (not Orthodox) I think any general book on Judaism should include much more diverse viewpoints possible within a Jewish framework than this book allows for. Jewish Wisdom is well-written, nicely annotated and a great resource for the Orthodox though. It's really quite good for what it is but readers looking for a broader overview beyond the limits of an Orthodox angle will need to look elsewhere. 5 stars (Belongs on every Jewish Bookself) - The author has a gift for being a...
