The Principles of Scientific Management

1 stars (Phrase) - I understand that some terms are well-known, but in 1998, to use the term "nigger in the woodpile" in quotes or not does not ride well with me. I have to read a handout from this book for a class. Had I bought the book, I would've returned it. But since I cannot return copies, I guess I'm stuck with it, but I will be complaining to my teacher about the use of this handout. 5 stars (The Roots of Modern Management) - Taylor's ideas are commonly viewed as being antiquated because of the time and circumstances under which he worked. Not so! If you think TQM (including Deming, Juran, Shewart, and Taguchi) and Collaborative Management are the answer, you'll find the roots of of these and more in Taylor. It is true that Taylor applied his efforts mainly to work consisting of brute force - but that was the workplace world which existed then. Before reading Taylor, you should first get up to speed on modern management/leadership concepts. Then, travel back to a time before machines replaced human labor. (If you are my age it should be easy!) Now read Taylor and use just a bit of imagination to visualize what he would be doing today. Then, and only then, can you begin to understand and appreciate what this man and a few other pioneers like him did. Would his mindset change the way you do business? Then you'd better change because TQM and Collaborative Management are just Taylor on steroids. You can't understand management/leadership unless you understand Taylor. And you can't compete unless you understand both of these. 5 stars (Still relevant) - Although dated this short book contains intersting lessons. The book presents scientific management. Scientific management applies to the management of industrial processes and is based on four principles: - Development of a science: The various ways of doing the task are analyzed and the best way is identified (note that further progress may be made due to new innovation); - Selection and training of the work for...

A Winning Edge

5 stars (An Olympic Champion teaches Kids about how to Compete) - When the Olympic torch was making its way around the Olympic Stadium in Salt Lake City this month it was not surprising that at one point Bonnie Blair was one of the former Olympians to carry the torch. After all, Blair is the winningest U.S. athlete in Winter Olympic history and the winner of more gold medals than any other female U.S. Olympian as a speed skater. " A Winning Edge " was written by Blair for children, with whom she shares the sacrifices and victories that made her famous and her belief that the best motivation for speed skating or any other endeavor is doing it for love. " A Winning Edge " tells the story of the Blair family, where Bonnie was the youngest of six kids. In fact, her father dropped off her mom at the hospital for Bonnie's birth and then took the rest of the family to a skating race. The book is filled with pictures from the Blair family album and illustrations by Doug Keith depicting Bonnie's key moments in Bonnie's life and skating career. Bonnie tells about how she joined her racing family on the ice, how she developed her training regimen, and how the police department in her hometown of Champaign, Illinois helped raise money for her to train in Europe. The results were Bonnie's success at the 1984 Winter Games in Sarajevo, the 1988 games in Calgary, the Albertville games in 1992, and the Lillehammer games in 1994. Bonnie provides not only memories about her races, but those of her longtime friend Dan Jansen. This book is like reading a family photo album or scrapbook with Bonnie pointing out to you what everything means and how it was important in her life. Young readers dreaming of being an athlete will be inspired by her emphasis on the four key words that made Bonnie's own dreams come true: dedication, balance, risk and love. Older readers will enjoy finding out more about the young woman with the great smile we watched win all those gold medals on the...

Biology- Concepts and Connections 4th Edition

4 stars (Good Book For Class) - This book will definitely get the job done. I just needed a book for my class and this works out great. It was in good condition and didn't have any highlighting marks in it. 5 stars (New Fifth Edition Brings Everything Up To Date) - This new Fifth Edition of an old standby. The book retains it's aim of engaging students from a wide variety of majors in the wonders of the living world. It relates the basic concepts of biology to concepts in every day life, to evolution, and to the process of science. The basic upgrades in this edition include: Greater emphasis on cells as the structural and functional units of life. Incorporates recent advances in the field of cellular reproduction, genetics and cloning. the concepts of evolution have been extensively reorganized and updated. This includes a major upgrading in the area of the evolution of biological diversity. the sections on animals and plants has been redone with a greater emphasis on those forms that the student sees in their everyday life. the ecology area has been updted with current ecological data and fresh photos. The text has been extensively reviewed to ensure that the new edition retains the reputation for accuracy that has become a hallmark of this book. 5 stars (Excellent Biology Text) - Biology Concepts and Connections, is an excellent text on life science. This book presents information in a clear and logical way. At the end of each section, there is a question box, which allows the reader to check their understanding of the information presented. It is also very helpful that answers are included for all the questions in the book. The book is broken into thirty-eight sections, which cover a wide variety of topics, such as cell biology, evolution, plant biology/botany, animal anatomy/life function, and much more. The CD-Rom which comes with this book is great for reviewing the material presented. I used this book in my honor's biology class and received an A. I...

Essential Cell Biology- Second Edition

4 stars (Pretty Good and Basic) - This text is actually really good for beginners or as a refresher. Full of info and very detailed. 3 stars (Usefull illustrations, but it didn't help much for class) - After taking my first course in cell biology I discovered a number of things about the subject. 1) Cell Biology is a HARD CLASS! In my class, we covered about 18 or so chapters of material. Tests were based mostly on memorization of both relevant and obscure facts as well as many, many molecular processes. For someone that is pressed for time and tries to cram before tests, there will be problems. 2) It is difficult to understand many of the processes in cell biology without some chemistry background. When I took the class, I was also in organic chemistry 2, but that didn't help much. If I could have done it over again, I would actually take Biochemistry before Cell because processes in Cell Biology are explained briefly and mostly independent of the chemistry involved, which forces the student to memorize information without really understand why these processes occur. 3) In general, Biology is becoming more problem based and in order to understand cell, you need to have solve useful questions. Based on the inherent difficulties of Cell Biology that I have mentioned, I don't think that this book did much to bridge any of these learning gaps. The molecular processes were explained briefly which was ok, but since there was so many of them, it was still hard to manage. The chemistry of cell biology in this book is poorly explained. Chemical structures are largely discarded in favor of acronyms. Obvisously, acronyms are favored for the long run, but a firm understanding of the chemical structures needs to be understand first. In my opinion, this book relied too much on acroynms. Finally, the questions in this book were terrible. Some were just inane (Compare signs of life for a rock and a plant) while others were just pointless (Calculate something or the...
