The Game- Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists

5 stars (An interesting, and mechanical way to approach meeting with the opposite sex) - This book is absolutely filled with interesting theories on the art of social interaction and meeting women for dating and sex. 1/2 autobiography of the author Neil Strauss's social life for the last two years, and 1/2 story of the dark side of "The Game" in which a group of "Pick Up Artists" move in a house together, and it eventually collapses on itself. Looking at the book, you wonder just what exactly is "The Game" and when does one stop looking at life and meeting people not as a "set" or group, drop the "routines" and play in the real world instead. 5 stars (Trust REAL reviews.) - Please note that the review below, and most if not all reviews with 1-2 star reviews, especially those calling members of the community described in this book are all by one man who i shall not name, as he is merely a disgruntled man with a vendetta against this community of individuals who's goals is self-improvement, please take a look at reviews done by the top 50 and real name reviewers. 1 stars (Wait for the Movie) - If you like to watch the TV shows "Friends", "Coupling", "How I met your mother", "Sex in the City", "The Single Guy" or "Nova" and you're looking for a story to read, than this book is for you. If you haven't read a book for pleasure for a long time but your looking for a "How To" book, then this book isn't for you. Read the book "The Sensuous Man" instead. I listened to Neil Strauss at a book signing. He "tours" with self proclaimed losers who call them themselves former losers who sell "How To Pickup Women" services. They sell nothing but air --- and that's free. If you're looking for a story but not a book reader, wait for the movie coming to theaters in 2008. ...

Understanding the Old Testament Abridged 4th Edition

5 stars (Fleshes out the Bible) - No question the Old Testament is a great read, but face it, the original audience for this work is long dead and buried. Anderson's standard text on the world of the Old Testament is excellent in bringing the ancient world and the context for the collection that is the Old Testament to light. Reading the Bible without Anderson you get a story about some guy named Abram who took a walk one day and had some trouble with his new neighors. Reading it with Anderson, you get a deeper understanding of where Abraham came from, where he was headed, and how the belief of early Judahism developed through and in conflict with those of the neighboring Canaanites. The agrarian focused religion of the Canaanites get's it's own hearing as a people's attempt to make sense of the life around them. "Understanding the Old Testament" then provides this level of insight and background for all the other books of the Old Testament. How and why we now have the expression of the Jewish people's understanding of God gains more texuture and depth. 4 stars (Fascinating insights on ancient biblical events!) - An amazing, descriptive, objective, factual read about the beliefs, people and events that went on in ancient biblical times. Some great pictures too! I was captivated and fascinated! 3 stars (In depth survey following historico-critical methods) - Anderson uses easy to read sentences and aims his OT introduction at the lay person, but will be useful more to students and pastors because of the content. I was somewhat disappointed that he has nothing on Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). R.K. Harrison's Intro to the OT is much more comprehensive, including discussion using both historico-critical methodology and conservative approaches, whereas Anderson assumes that the historico-critical method is the only way to go. Nevertheless, the information is readily accessible and easy to read, and illustrated well. ...

The Second Coming of Christ- The Resurrection of the Christ Within You 2 Volume Set

5 stars (The Real Deal) - Imagine if Jesus Christ personally told you what the gospels meant -- told you what the holy ghost was (and how you could actually "receive" it). Imagine if he explained his parables to you, took all the mystery and confusion out. Imagine if he explained heaven and hell in a way that actually made sense to you! Imagine if he talked to you in a way that you could feel a connection to him, the way you did when you were a kid maybe. Imagine if the things he told you not only made you feel good like that, but they were also totally logical, so you didn't have to choose between your religion and the teachings of modern science. Imagine if religion and science turned out to be one and the same thing. Can't imagine it, can you? I know I couldn't. But do yourself a favor anyway. Read the book. 5 stars (A thousand billion stars for this one) - This is quite simply one of the most marvelous, engaging, and educational books I've ever read. One paragraph from this book contains more wisdom than you're likely to encounter in months or years of ordinary study. Weeks, months, years of life go by and rarely, if ever, are we so blessed to have a volume of this magnitude appear. The educational value of this work is inestimable. Blessed are we who have the opportunity to read and study this book. This is a work for the ages - buy it! 5 stars (The Second Coming of Christ Within You) - This 2 volume hardbound set is beautifully bound and a joy to use. The extensive footnotes are at least as interesting as the text and contribute to appreciating Yogananda's revealed interpretation of biblical and apocryphal texts supplemented and supported by Buddhist, Moslem and Hindu texts and his own revelatory understanding of the universalist Christ consciousness and its meaning to the world. This is a book to heal the damage done to the Christian message (and to the hearts of those seaching for God's love) done by "churchlogy". I find myself more...

Environmental Science - Toward a Sustainable Future 9th Edition

4 stars (One of the Best) - This is one of the most readable environmental texts I've seen. It is very comprehnsive and the coverage of the newest scientific results in the science of resource conservation is simply excellent. The content is oriented around a group of themes and applied to the concept of ecosystems and their management. Is almost as if the author has takrn the first halting steps toward a unified environmental theory. Two negative points though. Coverage of forest resources is a little thin, and like most textbooks, the price is way too high. 5 stars (Making environmental science relevant) - Professor Richard Wright has succeeded where so many others have failed, by creating a textbook that makes the subject of environmental science relevant. After all, most students taking a course that uses this book are doing so because it's required, rather than as an elective. As an adjunct professor of environmental science at Endicott College, I have reviewed many textbooks for possible use in introductory courses. This one is a standout, and based on feedback from students over the past four years, they, too, agree. The text is easy to read, and enhanced by many graphs, charts and photographs. Mother-Daughter Wisdom - Creating a Legacy of Physical and Emotional Health

5 stars (Mother-Daughter Wisdom) - I just got my book and have started reading it. Its great. I had seen Christiane Northrup on tv and she is great. She makes you think...."why didn't I think of that-its so simple" 1 stars (Cliches, platitudes and old chestnuts) - As mother of two teenagers, I had high hopes for this book, but I almost gagged on the number of trite sayings this author can cram into a paragraph. You will find "great" insights like: mothers are very important in an infant's life, two year olds are announcing their independence, and it's important to keep channels of communication open with your daughter even when things aren't going smoothly. And I paid how much money to learn THAT?? If you have had your eyes and ears open for any length of time, you will find nothing new in this book. It is all hype and marketing with no substance. And wisdom? That's the biggest hype of all. Save your money and just go talk to your daughter. 5 stars (Wow! Awesome Book! Mothers of Daughters: Get This Book!) - First off, this book makes a great gift to anyone you know who has a daughter regardless of age. It makes a great baby shower gift, also. I just want to start by saying, I first saw this book and I skimmed through it, but didn't buy it. I was very skeptical. I am a well read individual and I was thinking: "I don't need another lame self help book by some would be expert that sits on my shelf that I never read. My daughter's five: there is a bunch of birth, pregnancy stuff in the book. I am past those stages and don't need a book that covers stuff I don't need." However, I ended up going back and getting the book. I am SO glad I did. Now I am here to say: this book is amazing. Reading the book made me want to read all of her books. I took so many notes and have already started using some of what she wrote. For those of you who consider yourself Moms who care about being good Moms, this book is a great compass for how to raise your daughters well. It ...

How to Read the Bible Book by Book

2 stars (dissapointed...) - i could only read an hour of this. the 1st 3 chapters are on the bible code. the rest is probably just as bad. 5 stars (The Bible as a Whole) - I was exposed to this book as I was visiting Regent College and talking with Gordon Fee in his office there. It was about a week prior to the release of the volume and he was excited about it. Dr. Fee pointed out that this was actually mainly his own project and Dr. Stuart acted primarily as a consultant for the Old Testament material. He explained his vision in very canonical terminology. He wanted to create a reader's guide to the Bible as a whole and explained that this is more of a one-person project in order to give the book unity. Verses are descibed in relation to surrounding passages. These passages are included in the individual book of the Bible. The books are a part of larger section of Scripture (e.g., Genesis is part of the "Narrative of Israel in the Biblical Story"). These sections combine together to make the whole of the Bible itself. There is an overview to the whole Biblical story and one for each section. The chapters about the individual works of the Bible have the following setup (using Genesis as an example): ORIENTING DATA FOR GENESIS -Content (brief synopsis) -Historical Coverage (estimation of time the events take place) -Emphases (short list) OVERVIEW OF GENESIS (few paragraphs to summarize material) SPECIFIC ADVICE FOR READING GENESIS (a page or two of advice) A WALK THROUGH GENESIS (divides the book into sections and gives short commentary on each section) The chapters end with a brief concluding paragraph which reiterates the books role in the whole of the Bible. This book is extremely accessible for the layperson wanting a guide to reading the Scriptures. All too often verses and passages are used apart from their biblical story and this guide is a wonderful reminder of those dangers as well as a helpful tool in changing our perspective. Of course it is hel...

Counseling the Culturally Diverse- Theory and Practice

5 stars (Counseling the Culturally Diverse: Theory & Practice) - Sue & Sue have revised their book with wonderful results. This time they include a section "Clinical Implications" in each chapter, this adds to the information and helps with the teaching of this necessary subject. As usual Sue & Sue are thorough and thoughtful in their presentation. They also include the notion of Organizational Culture as a needed subject of study. I highly recommend this book for any clinican and professor who works in the field of psychology. Dr. Gabrielle M. Guedet, Ph.D., MFT 4 stars (Good Book, some problems with it.) - This was required reading for a class I was taking in multicultural issues. It was very interesting but it was hard to read parts of it because of the nature of confronting our biases that the book addresses. I did have some issues with the way the book approached discussing the role of white people in society. It was almost as if the authors wanted me to feel bad about being white. Overall it was very informative and gave really good examples and implications for clinical use. 1 stars (A Biased Look at Bias in America) - I must add my disappointment to many others who have already posted here. This book is required reading in my masters in counseling course, and I was hoping for something that would provide valuable guidelines to reach across cultures in counseling. Unfortunately, Sue & Sue make it quite clear that the only reaching across cultures to be done is by White Americans. Whites are painted as being responsible for all bias in our country while non-Whites are to be held responsible for nothing. Period. Just because these two authors (or any authors, for that matter) are considered the experts in their field does not mean they are necessarily correct. It is impossible for any human being to approach any subject without bias, yet overall Sue & Sue hold only Whites accountable for recognizing and correcting their biases. At the same time...

Theological Dictionary of the New Testament 10 Volume Set

5 stars (Helpful Work for Word Studies) - Students of New Testament Greek should purchase this book. The one volume abridged addition is suited for quick word studies and for those looking for short background history on Greek phrases and words. The outline of the book is easy to follow. Kittel looks at every major usage of the Greek word from its cultural setting to its biblical usage. While I concur that sometimes Kittel's theology is not orthodox, his background history of the Greek word and its root usage is worth the price of the book. True New Testament Greek students will still enjoy diving into the Greek text yourself without seeing Kittel's word studies but it is helpful to see how he compares to your own exegesis. 2 stars (Poor Semantics) - These old volumes [I own the 10 vol. set], and those that use it uncritically, suffer from several exegetical fallacies. The first is known as the "root fallacy." The ancient origin of a word [100-5000 years earlier] has little if anything to do with its use or meaning in a particular text in the New Testament. This is also known in modern semantics as the 'etymological fallacy.' Similarly, there is an enormous difference between diachronic [through time] linguistics and synchronic linguistics [same time]. The use of a word 100-5000 years earlier or later has little if anything to do with its use at a particular time by a particular person. Another now classic fallacy has been called the "illigitimate totality transfer." That is when a reader of a particular N.T. text illigitimately imports or includes all possible uses found everywhere else throughout all time into a particular text in the N.T. The reader is referred to excellent books on the subject by James Barr [who broke the grown in applying modern linguistics and semantics into Biblical exegesis] and more recently D.A. Carson ["Exegetical Fallacies"]. 4 stars (Kittel & Friedrich - An exhaustive work for linguistic use) - Gerhard Kittel's work has been a ma...

Groups

4 stars (Good resource and guide) - This book is a good tool to use for small groups, fellowship studies, or sunday school class. I used it for my college sunday school class to place emphasis on embracing our Christian community. While John Ortberg does a good job at painting the picture for us, it is basically his "The Life You've Always Wanted" book re-done for small groups in a practical way. I enjoyed using this guide but had to restructure the questions and format to cater to a sunday school environment. I would recommend making sure you know your group, and understand their needs, and perhaps come up with additional questions to meet the needs of your group. ...

Introducing Neuro-Linguistic Programming- Psychological Skills for Understanding and Influencing Peo

5 stars (Outstanding) - I very much wanted to get into this little known science of NLP, brainchild of Richard Bandler and John Grinder, for some time. After careful examination of similar books I chose this one after reading some of the page excerpts. Boy am I glad I did!! This book lays a framework and gives the fundamentals to this awesome science, and does so with such grace and ease that it is mesmerising. It simply and eloquently explains how you can use your brain to it's fullest potential and how to use your senses to design ways to get what you've always wanted. NLP - Neuro Linguistic Programming (don't be turned off by the fancy title) is simply a way of life to help you succeed. It is the language used by winners - the science and art of NLP was invented by studying what successful people do differently to everyone else; how their mindsets allowed them to succeed where others fail. It's little wonder that this book has got 5 stars from practically everyone who has bought it. It changed my life, and if you are looking for ways to get where you want to be in life then go for it. 5 stars (Great intro) - This book takes you right to the core without success stories and other stuffings. Info-packed as it is, it brings you into NLP quick and effortless, describing the concepts in a clear and consistent manner. Recommended reading for all NLP starters. 5 stars (The best you can read about introducing NLP) - Either you know NLP or you ever heared about it, this book is the best to read. ...

The Silent War- Ministering to Those Trapped in Deception of Pornography

5 stars (Helping Those Trapped in Pornography!!) - Henry Rogers doesn't pull any punches, here, in his expose of this tawdry topic, but all too common problem we have in our society. The chapters of his book include many different fronts, and cover the personal and private lives of those who have been harmed by pornography. He has included his own story, but there are some really good chapters, such as Chapter 4- She Has a Name, whereupon he cites Elis, Stefani, Amy, Kristen, and Julie, and he states that "their reason for existence is to satisfy lust, and that their names are insignificant." A truly troubling thought. Then there is Chapter 7 - VCR - Very Corrupt Rendevouz, and he states that due to the onset of this kind of technology in 98% of the homes, television permits you to be entertained in your living room by people you would not have in your home. And there is the other point that men are prone to sexual fantasy and the TV feeds their appetites quite well. Chapter 6 is another great chapter-Satan's Dynamic Duo: Hugh and Larry, and the chapter essentially focuses on Larry Flynt and Hugh Hefner. Hefner's father was apparently a descendant of William Bradford, the Pilgrim, and Flynt's parents raised him as a staunch Methodist, and while he went to college, he bought into Kinsey's teachings, hook, line, and sinker. Larry Flynt apparently met Jimmy Carter's sister, Ruth Carter Stapleton in 1977, and when he claimed to have seen the Apostle Paul on the "Hustler" jet in November, 1977, he is reported to have fallen to his knees, and Stapleton baptized him. However, he never left the pornography business. There are so many good chapters, and they're all provocative reading. Toward the end of the book, there is help for those who are seeking it, and for those who want to help. A great read, and highly recommended!!! 5 stars (A mans book written for men) - Rogers trends on ground that angels, and the rest of us, fear to go- ministering to those trapp...

Bad Girls of the Bible and What We Can Learn from Them

5 stars (Bad Girls of the Bible: And What We Can Learn from Them ) - This is a must for every woman with or without a past. It allows one to look deep within and see the woman that was or is and the hope of a new life with and in Christ Jesus. It has wonderful insights into your relationships with others and more importantly with our husbands. How often we are quick to blame them when it just might be our problem and not their fault. I found this book spiritual, insightful and humorous. I encourage every woman to give it a look see. 5 stars (Bad Girls of the Bible) - My Sunday School Class is using it as their Bible Study, and think it is well done. Better so far for younger women, but I have read ahead and it will get better for the older woman. 1 stars (Misogynistic, Narrow minded, Simplistic ) - I read more than 30 pages of this book only because my book group chose it. The author begins by saying that her husband (an Old Testament scholar) read (imply vetted) and corrected it for her. Help me! She believes herself too ignorant and dependent to even write her own book. She takes a very narrow view of biblical stories, reinforcing male dominated interpretations. This is "born-again" drivel. I, for one, think of Eve as the first heroic scientist. I hope she grabbed that fruit, relished the knowledge (even if it was unflattering knowledge) it brought her, and later reflected that while it was hard won, what she had learned was worth it. (If I am unknowingly naked, please let me find out!) Life is more difficult when we do not live in ignorance and denial - but, oh, how rich, thought provoking, and exciting it is when we embrace unflattering truths about ourselves, others and the world we live in. The author appears to caution us against taking risks, thinking for ourselves, asking for what we want and challenging authority. If you are over the age of 20, you know enough about the complexities of life to find this book one-dimensional. ...
