4 stars (a teacher's perspective) - I have taught an honors high school geometry class for almost 11 years using this book. It has its strengths and weaknesses, but I've been quite happy with it. First its strengths: it presents geometry in a mathematician's manner, starting with a few postulates and advancing one theorem at a time. For example, it doesn't tell you that the angles of a triangle add to 180 degrees until it discusses the parallel postulate on which that theorem is based. It proves everything that the authors think is within the understanding of a strong high school geometry student. The problems range from easy to very hard, with a strong emphasis on proof in the first chapters. Students are expected to solve some of the problems creatively, which is why some students who reviewed this book are frustrated by it. This means the book does a good job of presenting math the way it really is (guess, experiment, prove) instead of what students think it is (apply a formula, get the answer). The problems without solutions mentioned in the other reviews are few and far between indeed. Its weaknesses: the book really is intended for more self-motivated students that you normally find in high school. I imagine that this book might be off-putting for kids who don't really care about math. I don't like how the information at the beginning of the book is divided into chapters, but I just clump the information differently when I teach it. I think that some of the proofs left out of the book are quite accessible to motivated students, and I teach them. I have also been able to teach theorems beyond the scope of the book, which suggests that the book could have gone into more detail. Overall, I recommend this book for a geometry course for motivated and bright high school students. I do not recommend it for self-study or for very basic courses. I agree with the other reviewers that it requires a competent teacher, but that's because no book can teach... 5 stars ("... you are free.") - Since reading this book, I've urged everyone I know to give it a look. It is a (very) short story, but one that delivers. Anyone who reads it with an open mind will come away at least a little changed, for the better. Enjoy. 5 stars (A basic book for any colection) - I bought this book to read to my kids. I didn't read it until I was in High School and I whished I had read it when I was younger. 5 stars (Inspiring) - This book is about a seagull by the name of Jonathan who pursues his dreams overcoming all limitations. This book shall leave a lasting impression on your mind. Richard Bach tries to convey the message that `impossible is nothing'. Through willpower and constant practice, we can exceed all limitation that we have self-imposed on ourselves. Perfection doesn't have limits. Two words best describe this book- thought provoking and inspiring. ... 5 stars (Good text overall) - In my opinion this is one of the best texts for introductory statistics. It contains a lot of useful material and is nice to read quickly since important formulas are highlighted. Examples are also helpful to learn the material. The only problem is that sometimes the excercises are too much of a real-world kind, which can be annoying if your course is theoretical. Still, I think that this book is always nice to have around in case you forget some things on probability or stats. 2 stars (Look elsewhere if you're looking for a rigorous text.) - If you like applications and problem sloving, pick it up--it's loaded with it. But if you're looking for a book with a strong theoretical foundation, look elsewhere. Quite often my professor would see it fit to do a "more general case" or a "more rigorous proof." I found the examples and motivations to be weak and not very helpful, and the proofs to be kind of a joke. I often felt like I was reading a freshman calculus book while reading this one, as it's been a while since I read a math text that hi-lited definitions and theorems... 3 stars (This book is more theoretical.) - This book simply does not have enough worked out examples. This book is more theoretical than applied. I personally favor applied books more. I purchased Probability for Risk Management by Hassett and it is a lot more "hands on." It explains what you need to know in a few paragraphs whereas Wackerly takes pages to say the same thing. Granted, if you're looking more for theory, go with Wackerly's Mathematical Statistics. If you're looking to pass an actuarial exam, Hassett is undoubtedly the way to go. ... 5 stars (Excellent Latin Textbook) - As a Latin teacher, I can tell you that this is an excellent textbook to use with your students. 5 stars (A great book for beginners as well as seasoned ceramicists) - A wealth of knowledge can be found in this timeless book that covers all the major aspects of ceramics. For the novice, it covers the the world's history of ceramics. Discusses clay and glaze compositions and gives step by step explanations of the various techniques from wheel throwing to hand building to making plaster molds for slip casting. For the advanced ceramist, there is good information of various kilns and their construction. It offers analysis of several major clays, frits, and feldspars as well as other useful reference tables including some recipes for glazes from low fire to high fire. I first bought the book in '82 as a college freshman and it has proven a valuable aid ever since. It is on the top of my "required reading" list for anyone interested in getting involved with studio ceramics. ... 4 stars (Our Legacy) - "Devotional Classics" is the companion volume to Foster's "Spiritual Classics." Foster and Smith designed it as weekly devotional guide to 52 classic historical authors on the devotional life. They catalog their readings using the Renovare conceptualization of six strands in historical spirituality: the prayer-filled life, the virtuous life, the Spirit-empowered life, the compassionate life, the word-centered life, and the sacramental life. These six categories along with their 52 representative authors combined with the introductions by Foster and Smith, offer readers a fine introduction to Christian devotional thinking. As with "Spiritual Classics," the snippets are at times hard to fully digest out of the context of their original writings. Hopefully, readers will be motivated to read many of the 52 author's full works. Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and the forthcoming "Beyond the Suffering: The Story of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction." 5 stars (Eye Opening) - I've always considered myself a student of theology and spritually deep, until I read the readings in Devotional Classics. This book opened my eyes to a whole new world of Christian devotion. The book is an excellent compilation of some of history's greatest Christians and their experiences with God, not merely their doctrinal beliefs. Richard Foster's comments are also very insightful. I highly recommend this book and always have several copies on hand to give away. 5 stars (Portal to the 'Old Book' - Wisdom From Those who Got It) - In the introduction Foster cites CS Lewis' recommendation for reading one 'old book' for every new book one reads. 'Old books' can speak with voices outside of the biases of our time and document the inter-generational story of Christ and his Church.
