5 stars (A very good start) - He very good start if you want to know more about wine. A must for everyone who loves wine and wants to have a clear overview 5 stars (Gets One Into & Clarifies A Difficult Topic) - Wine is complex with all its grapes and regions and producers. This book helps to simplify and compartmentalize much of this complexity into useable, workable info. Start with grape types and clear away the snobbish smoke of much of the vino knowledge, this book delves into wine lists when dining and labels when purchasing. Extremely useful are chapters are serving and storing and collecting from major wine areas. Least useful part which could use more is pairing with food. One might benefit also from reading Andrea Immer's books which to this reader clarify and provide food pairing info in superb style and manner. 5 stars (Good Intro without the Snobbery) - There may be more in-depth wine books out there, and there are certainly more academic books out there on the subject, but most of them scare the average reader with their pages of pomposity and attitudes so high and mighty that they induce nosebleeds. But finally there's a wine book for amateur wine enthusiasts who don't have a wine cave handy or a budget to road trip the Napa Valley or Bordeaux. The books takes the reader from the very basics of wine, its history, and all the terms used in wine making and wine tasting. What's particularly helpful is how the book is divides wine into geographic chapters so the reader can get the feel for the region, which helps immensely when differentiating the specific wine types. What's also quite nice is the humorous, down-to-earth attitude of its authors, who see wine as something to be enjoyed by all, not just an elite few, and, in fact, the book is peppered with "Snob Alerts" to warn readers of particular wine trivia that the nosebleed, blue-blood types like to toss about. The book does need some updating, especially with the pricing and vintage i... 5 stars (Makes reading a cookbook fun!) - There's a story behind every recipe, and this is hilarious book! My mother frowned upon the title, but couldn't put the book down. I'm buying several for Christmas presents. 5 stars (For All GRITS) - I laughed 'til I cried. It's a must read for all of us GRITS (Girls Raised In The South). I ordered more to give as gifts to all my Southern girlfriends! 3 stars (Funny at times but also a bit trite) - This book was fun to read in that it did a realistic comparison between the habits of bringing food to funerals in the south in that those of us who are from the south have actually eaten many of the foods described in the book. It is really part cookbook and part fun read, however, as much of the book is taken up with the recipes. After reading it, I passed it on to a friend who is from Nashville and who enjoys the southern culture and cooking. Enjoy it for a light read and a few laughs but know that it contains more recipes than anything else. ... 5 stars (EXCELLENT REFERANCE BOOK) - EXCELLENT REFERENCE BOOK FOR WEED IDENTIFICATION. QUITE SPECIFIC FOR FARMERS AND GARDENERS. 4 stars (A handy guide--good identification photos) - I'm very pleased with this guide. After spending time with field research botanists, I've come to appreciate how difficult it can be to catalog invasive plants--they're EVERYWHERE! And of varying sizes, shapes, colors. Some so innocuous that it wouldn't even occur to you to notice and others so prolific in their families that it takes forever to track the different varieties. Luckily, Uva, Neal, and DiTomaso did and put together an excellent little book. As a professional gardener, this has been a handy reference. I would give it five stars, but I do have issue with some of the items. In the Introduction, weeds are discussed, but it is not clearly established what makes a "weed" a weed. For example, mallow is listed as a weed, but it appears to be a weed in the context of agricultural plantings. To my understanding, there are several native varieties of mallow in the U.S. Is this particular variety non-native? Is it a nuisance plant? Is it unsightly? My definition of weed has always been non-native escapists or volunteers. I'd like to see this clearly defined. I would also like more information on where the plant originates and what makes it a weed in the Northeast. As well as any beneficial qualities--are parts of the plant edible? Can any of it be used? Difficulties eradicating? Basically, as a gardener I'd like to know if there are any positive attributes. If I have a field full of amiranth is it the same type of amiranth sold in the stores? How does it vary? Could my client potentially harvest any of this before tilling or pulling out? The scientific information, such as plant identification: size of seeds, defining leaf shapes, etc., is all very clear and well done. As I said the photos are great. All in all this is indespensible, I just wish they would c... 5 stars (Excellant animal anatomy book) - This book is excellant for the study of anatomy of all mamals. The pictures were very desciptive and the text helped to explain things alittle. The book doubled as a coloring book if one chose to use it as such to help reinforce where things were located. The only thing I wished it had was information on birds. 5 stars (Better than Dyce) - This a great book that gets right to the point instead of dancing around it like dyce. I highly recommend it to all of my fellow vet students. It will save you tons of time! 4 stars (Everyone wants Pasquini) - I'm a vet student in the Philippines and even though we have anatomy books in the library, i really found it hard to study it. So I guess Pasquini has really simplified the subject, breaking it down into tables and diagrams and simple texts. it even has "clinical" boxes so you can appreciate what you're studying! if you're a first year stude, it'll help you become familiar with a lot of diseases, IM or IV sites, etc. My classmates find the pictures very cute (as w/ many others). I'm restudying it right now to prepare for surgery. it's just been a direct, miracle book. On the other hand, no colored pictures and the systemic approach can bog you down with locating some stuff. and sometimes, i get confused with the diagrams, but that's just me. ... 5 stars (EXCELLENT! Look no where else for this bible of propagation) - Ive had this book for two days and I just adore it. For the advanced or intermediate gardener, this book does not "speak down" to you, yet supplies enough info for the average, curious or Home Depot crowd. There is so much information compiled in here -- great breakdown of species and methods -- conventional and traditional methods of propogation (that I use, and I like their write-ups on these more complicated - yet effective - methods). The artistic direction and layout of the book is fabulous. Highly illustrated with step-by-step techniques and photography. My only criticism is the way the individual plant species are layed out in the book, but that is just my preference. The book is arranged in species by annuals, trees, vines, etc -- I would have preferred to see the book arranged in the alphabetic by species or common names; however, there is a well thought out index in the back which makes the look up easy. A great book -- look no further. If I could marry a gardening book, this would be it!!! 5 stars (American Hort. Society Plant propagation) - This book is great. I borrowed it from my local library and had to have it for my own !!!! 5 stars (The mysteries of propagation have finally come together...) - I was in search of a good informative book for seed starting and stumbled upon this one. What a find!!! They give detailed instructions for hundreds of plants (including hardy and tropicals) defining exactly what propagating technique(s) works best for each. Softwood cuttings, hardwood cuttings, dividing, grafting (far more methods than I have ever seen in one book) and the various methods of gathering and seed-starting, whether your species prefers cold-stratifying, soaking, scarification or if it prefers to be direct-sown. This book has techniques for reproducing just one or hundreds of plants. I could go on and on but it all boils down to this; If you have any interest in multi...
