4 stars (Another small set of improvements) - Of late I have been skipping years between Mac Quicken upgrades, and even doing that, find relatively little changed each time. Perhaps that is why Intuit is happy to force stragglers forward by restricting online banking features to recent releases (although as software developer myself, I do understand the support and maintenance arguments as well). The 2006 release continues in this vein, but I do feel it was a worthwhile investment on its own merits. My credit union has paid the "Mac tax" Intuit requires in order for their online banking features to interoperate with Quicken, so I am lucky enough to be able to use them. And they work very well. The one-step-update and downloaded transaction windows look nicer and are more responsive compared to the 2004 version, and have some useful new features. For example, the downloaded transactions window's dropdown menu for choosing an online account now provides a visual indication of which accounts contain new transactions. This saves a lot of time in conjunction with one-step updates. The new flexibility in scheduling calendar-based transactions is useful too. There were things (like my direct-deposit paychecks) which previously couldn't automatically be assigned the right dates. Now they can, and it was easy to fix them. I'm less impressed with the much hyped "backup to .Mac" feature, however. It's perhaps helpful for people who lack a backup strategy for all their important documents (such as the Backup program which comes with .Mac), but it pales by comparison with what it could and should be: Quicken should take advantage of the Sync Services offered by Tiger and .Mac to let you synchronize your Quicken accounts between multiple computers. I should not have to care whether I'm on my PowerBook at work or my PowerMac at home; transactions I enter in either place should appear on the other. Instead, I can only run Quicken at home and sync with Pocket Quicken on my Treo. ... 5 stars (Excellent upgrade!) - I have been using Quicken on a continuous basis since 1994, upgrading when program quits estimating my taxes (2-3 years). This is probably the best upgrade I remember, well worth purchasing. The 2 best new features for me: - Attaching a note or document or reminder to a transaction - Finding transactions across accounts and then being able to globally or selectively edit There are several other improvements also. Program installed easily on my XP computer, 10 years data converted correctly, and can still download the 5 accounts as I did before. After 2 weeks using, everything works as should. A good upgrade, in my opinion! 1 stars (QIF imports eliminated.) - Quicken wants to rule the financial software world but I think they are will do the opposite. They have eliminated QIF imports so that they can force you to use a format that almost no one supports. Stick with Quicken 2004 and you will still be able to import your transactions from your financial institution. I wish I hadn't wasted my money. 2 stars (I have come to loathe Quicken) - I have used Quicken for about 3 months, and find that it is a royal pain to work with. There are many many features, but it doesn't take long, even when setting up new accounts, that you have to hack together imperfect ways of handling all kinds of transactions. I haven't tried Money yet, but I can't believe that it's worse than this. ... 3 stars (GOOD PRODUCT! BUT, ONLY A MINIMAL UPGRADE OPTION FOR USERS OF 2005 & 2004 EDITIONS) - " Quicken Willmaker Plus 2006 Estate Planning Software " is an easy-to-use handy tool for anyone who has to author a written-will and/or similar legal document. The software has a well-designed layout. It runs on any Windows operating system, which is 95 or later version. It can be installed and configured in a shortwhile. Its operational tempo is nice; and, it does not tie-up systems resources as much as other 'Quicken software' like: "Quicken Premier Personal Finance" and "Premier Home & Business" do. However, the first negative sign users of previous editions will notice in this one is that very little has changed. As a result of this, it is difficult to see any good reason why those who own either the 2004 or the 2005 versions should bother themselves with upgrading to this 'new' version. In general terms, the naked truth is that most software manufacturers, who indulge in the production of yearly 'new versions', have very little or nothing to show for the money they ask. They often play on buyers' psychology by rearranging the graphical interface of their 'old' products, and then hype them up as 'new' and 'improved'. This explains in part, why most of the recently released 'new products' have more bugs than the 'older ones', which they are supposed to be replacing. And since most of the potential buyers believe that 'new' items are always better, they fall into the buying trap. What I have mentioned does not partain only to the makers of 'Quicken' products. It includes Microsoft, Adobe, Macromedia, Norton, McAfee, Corel, and so on. But, I hinted it here because I have conclusively inferred that this newly released " Quicken Willmaker Plus 2006 Estate Planning Software " is very much like the 'old' 2005 edition, which it suppose to replace. And, the 2005 version is as well, very similar to the 2004 version: in both design and function. So, how on earth can one justify ... 2 stars (Quicken for MAC disappoints) - Quicken 2005 works ok, but it has a couple of big problems that make it virtually useless for me. I've used Quicken on Windows for 6 years and have been able to download asset classes for each stock, bond, or mutual fund I own. I manage my investments using assset allocation - ie, by trakcing the % of my holdings large cap, small cap, international, bonds, and cash. Quicken 2005 for Mac doesn't have this function. Also, the whole program works in 9-point font only. Rows and rows of little tiny numbers and you can't change it. Not so great for the aging population of consumers. 2 stars (For those looking for something OTHER than Quicken) - I've been reading the Quicken reviews on Amazon and on other locations, and have been sufficiently scared away from purchasing an upgrade to work with Mac OS 10.4. After much searching, I found that there IS another money management system that works with the Mac, called Moneydance. I don't know how well it works, although the reviews I've read have averaged 4 stars. They offer a free trial version to download from their Web site (which is, it seems, the only place where it can be purchased); hopefully, I can determine whether it's going to work for me. So there is more than Quicken for the Mac. Move over, Intuit! 1 stars (WARNING! Will Not Work With E*Trade) - I suppose I should have checked with Intuit's list of supported financial institutions, but neither E*Trade Financial or E*Trade Bank are supported for this version of Quicken. I find it hard to believe that one of the world's largest all-Web financial institutions would leave Mac users out in the cold. What is more frustrating is that it worked fine for Windows -- it seems like a simple file format problem that could be easilty addressed by Intuit & E*Trade. So take this review with a grain of salt -- I cannot really review a product that I have been unable to use at all! ... 5 stars (Definitely worth the upgrade) - Just installed Quicken Premier 2006 last night, and so far I can say it was definitely worth the upgrade. I think Intuit did an excellent job of streamlining the reporting functions. Just much easier to navigate and figure out what data you want to view. The feature within the register of viewing payment summaries of different merchants and categories is also very nice. As I have not yet set up my investments (a project for this weekend) I cannot accurately comment on this portion of the program. In summary, the overall functionality of the program is pretty much the same, so if you like your existing setup in Quicken then perhaps you don't need to upgrade. But for me personally I've always thought the interface in previous versions of Quicken was a little busy, and so this upgrade to what I consider to be a much cleaner, more streamlined interface was worth it for me. And by the way, I was able to find a full version of this product (CD only, no box or manual) online for $23... which was a bargain too good to pass up. 1 stars (Not for investors) - I finally decided it was time to upgrade from Quicken '99 (which I really liked) so that I could download stock quotes from the internet. Guess what - Quicken 2006 won't download preferred stock quotes, options quotes, or the pink sheet symbols for Canadian stocks! Quicken.com has all those types of quotes available, but they won't download into the program, making it largely useless for me. The only work-around is to create a Yahoo portfolio, download it as a csv file, then import it into Quicken. And even then, there is no "browse" to find the file. You have to manually type in the path EVERY DAY! Downloading accounts from financial institutions is a great feature with one exception: The first time you log on to, say, your credit card account, the program may download hundreds or even thousands of transactions. If your account was currently up to date, you don't need ... 5 stars (A great source of information for the independent.) - The information is very useful, just the e-book information itself is extremely valuable. The other "reviewer" said that he did not find it useful, and that there was no flexibitliy. However, I disagree, you can make any information as flexible as you choose by simply "exporting" the data. Many forms here, give you all the legal basics that I simply could not find on line (that is without having to pay for it). There is very little information that you can actually obtain for free anymore, and if you find it, you've probably invested hours upon hours of time that could be better spent running your business. I'm thrilled with my Legal Business Pro, now I can do all the work myself, and finetune it as I see fit (by simply exporting the finished document). And for a business owner that does business in several states, it has you covered, as you simply select which state(s) and it extracts the information relevant to you needs. A great resource, for those who would rather do their own work than shell out cash every time they need a simple legal form drafted. 5 stars (The best software product for small business !) - This is a great software product for small business owners. It has dozens of forms, sample letters, and worksheets to help with forming a business, hiring employees, borrowing and lending money, leasing space, etc. In addition to the forms, it includes the full text of five Nolo books: Legal Guide for Starting & Running a Small Business, Tax Savvy for Small Business, Everyday Employment Law, Marketing Without Advertising, and Leasing Space for Your Small Business. The books alone make this an amazing deal. Given Nolo's reputation for plain English self-help materials, this is a must-have for any business owner's computer. The peace of mind in being able to look up basic legal, human resources, and tax questions has made this an excellent purchase for me. 1 stars (Not Very Useful) - I th... 5 stars (Quicken Premier H&B 2006) - I have updated from Quicken Premier 2005. I am very please with the resoults, if I had known what was in this program I would have updated earlier. Quicken Premier H&B has many new ideas. 1 stars (Not very useful for business.) - I purchased this version for my home business. I needed to print invoices and track inventory. Also I liked the check printing feature. They failed to mention that you will need to order "Special" checks from them. The invoicing feature is very lacking in features and customability. You can't add shipping charges without making it a "Product". It did mention if you want ALL of the custom features, you need to order their Top Of The Line Quicken business program. Half of the toolbar seems dedicated to advertising products that you will need to make the program work the way you wanted it to work in the first place. If you are looking to buy this product, look on eBay, that's where my version will be tonight. 1 stars (Warning: Lack of QIF Support should be Known) - with the lack of .QIF support, this version of Quicken is a shell of the prior versions. Not all banks will pay the big bucks for Quicken's new format charges. Buy an older version instead of this. ... 5 stars (Pleasantly Pleased) - Previously I used Microsoft Money 2000 and attempted to switch over to Money 2005 but what a nightmare!!!! I uninstalled Money 2005 and swore off money programs all together. However, I recently bought a PDA and wanted to use it to track my finances. I read the reviews and there are a few items that I would encourage you to look at if you are going to buy this product: 1. Is your bank on the list of 2000+ banks 2. Does your bank charge to download Quicken files One of my banks that I have savings in is not on the list but this is no big deal as it is a savings account that I don't touch. And my primary bank does not charge to download Quicken files. If your good with this than this is an awesome program. Easy to use, well set up, only as many bells and whistles as you want to use but no so confusing that it negates it basic purpose. My faith has been restored in money programs. Furthermore, I also purchased the Pocket Quicken, which was just as easy to install and use. I highly recommend these programs. 5 stars (Quicken Basic 2005) - Quicken is a very easy product to use. It is a great accounting product. I highly recommend it. 4 stars (Great new features, but I miss the QuickTabs from version '99) - I upgraded from Quicken '99 because I was forced to when I bought a new computer (my '99 software came bundled with my old computer.) I was perfectly happy with the seven-year-old version, but I've found a lot of impressive new features in version 2006. The most exciting is the abilitly to scan a picture of a receipt or other document and attach it to a register transaction. I haven't had the time to learn all the new features, but it is user friendly enough to start using right out of the box if you are familiar with older Quicken versions. One feature I do miss is the QuickTabs that I've used in Quicken '99 and 2001. (I've taught with 2001 in my high school finance class.) Importing my old data from version '99 wa... 1 stars (Like a spreadsheet, but less useful) - This Rental Property Manager is like having one register for each property to track credits and debits. Some reports. Thats it. Using the regular Quicken Basic, with a Banking account and a Property/Asset account, works better and gives you a way to compare operating expenses, income, mortgage/loan information, and property value. Since its scope is limited, having shorter lists of categories and tax schedules and lines to worry about than in the regular Quicken software, but the limited scope and higher cost for a focused subset of Quicken Basic? Not so useful. 1 stars (More of what you don't need, none of what you do. Can I give it a negative star?) - I've been managing rental property for about 15 years, starting with 2 buildings and 10 units at the beginning and now with 25 units in 5 buildings, containing a mix from studios and 1-bedrooms up to 4-bedroom apartments. I recently decided to update from a very old version of Quicken, and since they had this program specifically for rental properties, I thought I'd found a perfect match. I couldn't have been more wrong. You would think that a company that has made accounting software for this long would understand the most basic needs, like a running total alongside each transaction (which even my 7-year old edition of Quicken had). Nope. There is only a single running total. Make a mistake, and it is virtually impossible to backtrack and find. How about a field for your check number, the singular way to identify your checks/transactions? It doesn't have one. One of the 8 or so automatic fields they do give you is unit number. Problem is, it's a simple numeric assignment based on the number of units you input when you create each building's account, and it can't be altered. Apartments lettered instead of numbered, numbered in partial sequence, alpha-numeric, by floors, cardinal direction, etc? Tough luck. These are just a few of the problems or basic design f... 5 stars (It needs to be done, so do it now!) - As another reviewer noted, the Schiavo case brought to light the need to get our affairs in order in a timely matter. This software does the trick. It's straightfoward and easy to use. There's a basic Q&A that gives the user an idea of what forms need to be used, and further Q&A to fill those forms out. It took me very little time (15 - 20 minutes in my case, others will vary) and gave me great peace of mind. You will have to get some forms notorized just in case there could be a dispute, but even a notary plus the cost of this software is a lot cheaper than any lawyer! It doesn't work in Louisiana because that state organized its laws under the Napoleonic codes, rather than the English commonlaw. I haven't seen similar software developed for that fine state, which is a shame as there is such a need for inexpensive legal help. I notice that the 2006 version of this product is out; as law changes all of the time it would be worth the extra $ to get the new version. If your budget doesn't extend that far, then this will work pretty well. Whatever you do, do it now. It will save your friends, your family, and you yourself much trouble and grief. This is peace of mind at bargain basement pricing! 5 stars (Easy) - I used an old PC with Windows 98. This program was easy and quick. If you have a simple will or trust that is basic then this should save you much time and expense. It asks questions and I was able to make a living trust in about 15 minutes of which 99% of the legal speak is preformatted and has been carefully reviewed. The program gives all of the information on what to do after a will or trust has been made to finalize it. I am very pleased with it and glad I did not pay a lawyer $1000 to type the information into his computer program that does the same thing. 4 stars (Great Product) - We have used all the different documents numerous times. 1 stars (Nothing New - Don't "updgrade") - Quicken Mac 2006 is not much of an upgrade. Compared to the 2004 version, the only change I can see is the color on some charts and some very minor changes. Quicken for PC is an excellent program. Quicken for Mac is mediocre. If you don't have any finance software and have a Mac, Quicken might still be your best bet. But don't pay for an upgrade if you have an earlier version - you'll get zero for your dollar. (I will give Quicken credit for backing their lame product with a money back guarantee ... and I will take them up on their offer.) I'd be happy to pay $99 for a Quicken Mac comparable to the PC version, but this isn't it. 1 stars (Full of bugs) - I've been using Quicken for more than 10 years. I started as a Windows user, and transferred to Quicken for Mac (QM) when I switched to the Mac in 2001. Sadly, QM appears to be the red-headed stepchild in the Intuit family. QM is consistently buggy. The user interface is dated (even moreso when compared with a current version of Quicken for Windows). My current issue with QM is that I cannot switch between Quicken data files without it crashing. I have two separate data files: one for my personal finances (which has my personal bank account, my credit cards, my retirement accounts, and a couple of individual stocks) and one for my household finances (which has a joint chequing account and credit cards). Switching between the two data files is guaranteed to crash QM. I'm using the latest version of OS X, and I'm using the latest patch for QM. Furthermore, QM displays several screen-painting issues that make it unreadable. Sometimes hiding the application fixes the issue, but oftentimes I have to quit QM and start it back up again. I'm beginning to feel like I'm using a Windows machine all over again. Please, Intuit, give QM some attention. It seems unlikely that they will, though; QM has been buggy for a few releases now, and they have barely bothere... 2 stars (Basic Entry - not very feature rich) - For the price I thought I'd get more than what amounts to a basic spread-sheet program that sync's with Quicken. Yes, when I'm spending cash, or using a CC at the store, it's great that I can enter it into the PPC and it will import it into my Quicken. But it's not stand-alone. It won't really track your portfolios. And it does not display any charts or graphs. For $10 it's worth it, for $30 I would have rather saved the money and just entered in my reciepts when I get home. I would suggest looking at alternatives like MS Money and SPB Finance. 5 stars (Perfect for my needs!) - I've been a user of Quicken for 5 years now and I'm addicted to tracking my finances through it. When I bought my Pocket PC 4 months ago, I wanted to use it to track my finances also, but it was too expensive at the retail stores. When it finally dropped a few bucks, I decided to try it. I'm mainly wanted it to track the cash I'm spending because in my business I deal with a lot of cash transactions and it's too easy to spend the cash without tracking it and it's a total pain to sit down at a computer with a pocket full of reciepts. Just like other software, I popped in the CD followed the instructions and everything loaded onto my Pocket PC with the greatest of ease. All of my transactions (the last 3 months), account information, memorized transactions, everything. I printed off the intructions and I'm off and running. Seriously easy to use, I'm just amazed. If you like to use Quicken, and have a Pocket PC, this software is a MUST have! I absolutely don't regret spending the money on it now. ...
