5 stars (Crisis Preparedness Handbook: A Complete Guide to Home Storage and Physical Survival) - Great book. I really don't see how one could be any better on this subject. The author has a very organized mind, has done his homework, and gives very specific recommendations that are practical and easy for anybody to follow. No wasted space or filler in this book. It's really a reference manual that you'll end up underlining and refering back to again and again. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (a great resource) - This is a great book for anyone interested in surviving any disaster. There is no telling what the future may hold, but this book is a good start in any survival library. 5 stars (One of the best out there.) - This book is well though out, organized in a simple and logical manner, and gives you plenty of information to design your own plan for a crisis of any kind. Unlike other books that just offer a bunch of check lists and "buy what I tell you" recommendation, this book allows you to make your own decisions of what you will and will not need to stock for a crisis. Additionally, much of this can be done on a budget, much of what you would need are your usual grocery items, in canned form. This is a huge savings over many of the dehyrated and freeze dried options normally presented in survival literature. Overall, if you are looking for a book to use as a basis for which to begin planning for a crisis, this is it. ... 2 stars (BUYERS BE AWARE 8th Edition Published) - Fall 2004 & Spring 2005 Students: the 8th edition of this book is published and comes with a CD, and, in some cases, a free world atlas. Check with your instructor for requirements. In any case, I wouldn't spend $100 for the 7th edition. Haven't read the book yet, so no rating. 4 stars (Very well-written and illustrated text with great photos) - Obviously written by authors who have a deep appreciation for this subject and a desire to pass on their knowledge, this text is useful not just for students of physical geography, but for anyone wanting a deeper understanding of geopolitics, area studies, anthropology, world history, etc. For example, I would have no clue about the culture, history and politics of Central Asia/Afghanistan and vicinity (my area of interest) without having a comprehensive understanding of the physical terrain and climate of this region--and how its inhabitants have adapted to it. I would not have gained this understanding without reading this text. My only complaint is that I had hoped for more emphasis on environmental issues. The authors may feel that this is beyond the scope of an introductory text; but problems such as the shrinking Aral Sea and tropical rainforest destruction are so widely catastrophic that I believe they deserve greater attention and understanding even at the introductory level. 5 stars (still on my bookshelf) - I remember this book from when I was an undergraduate, lo these many years ago (OK, so it was an earlier edition)! I'm glad to see it is still available and updated -- I enjoyed it then and I am using it now in answering the questions my children throw at me. This is an excellent resource book. I probably wouldn't pick it up as a light read at bedtime, but if you are interested in this topic you could do far worse than to get _Physical Geography_. ... 5 stars (A practical review of examination techniques) - Excellent simple to read text on how to examine the spine and extremities from the physiatry, orthopedic and neurologic viewpoints. This is a must for any practioner in the above fields especially medicolegal examiners and disability consultants. 2 stars (yuck) - Am i only one that really did not care for this text? Others are much more negotiable and useful such as Special Tests for Orthopedics. Save your money and check out other texts. 5 stars (Holy Smokes!) - Get it if you are looking for a good reference book to put on your desk that tells you how to locate various anatomical parts of the body (bones, ligaments, muscles, boney landmarks, various nerves and vessels too). Good pictures and clear explanations make this book a classic. Also liked "The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight Loss Plan, A Pocket Guide To What Works" for your overweight patients. ... 5 stars (Mother-Daughter Wisdom) - I just got my book and have started reading it. Its great. I had seen Christiane Northrup on tv and she is great. She makes you think...."why didn't I think of that-its so simple" 1 stars (Cliches, platitudes and old chestnuts) - As mother of two teenagers, I had high hopes for this book, but I almost gagged on the number of trite sayings this author can cram into a paragraph. You will find "great" insights like: mothers are very important in an infant's life, two year olds are announcing their independence, and it's important to keep channels of communication open with your daughter even when things aren't going smoothly. And I paid how much money to learn THAT?? If you have had your eyes and ears open for any length of time, you will find nothing new in this book. It is all hype and marketing with no substance. And wisdom? That's the biggest hype of all. Save your money and just go talk to your daughter. 5 stars (Wow! Awesome Book! Mothers of Daughters: Get This Book!) - First off, this book makes a great gift to anyone you know who has a daughter regardless of age. It makes a great baby shower gift, also. I just want to start by saying, I first saw this book and I skimmed through it, but didn't buy it. I was very skeptical. I am a well read individual and I was thinking: "I don't need another lame self help book by some would be expert that sits on my shelf that I never read. My daughter's five: there is a bunch of birth, pregnancy stuff in the book. I am past those stages and don't need a book that covers stuff I don't need." However, I ended up going back and getting the book. I am SO glad I did. Now I am here to say: this book is amazing. Reading the book made me want to read all of her books. I took so many notes and have already started using some of what she wrote. For those of you who consider yourself Moms who care about being good Moms, this book is a great compass for how to raise your daughters well. It ... 5 stars (Concise and Complete) - I'm a medical doctor currently working in indigenous comunities in southern venezuela. I attend to a wide range of medical and non medical problems. I have used the CMDT almost daily since working here. It has proven to be complete and concise, wich is a great feature when you need to pack your stuff and take a boat to the next comunity!. It is not a review, but it will give you the initial ideas to start investigating or treating. So if you're working in a relatively isolated area, where getting seconds opinions is dificult and takes time, doubt no more, this book will be a great help to you. 5 stars (Great Resource for Health Care Professionals. ) - This text gives quick and dirty coverage on an extensive range of topics. I keep it on my desk and use it often to research how illnesses are diagnosed, the signs and symptoms and treatment. 5 stars (CMDT vt Tierney,McPhee and Papadakis) - This is an excellent work which documents nearly 1000 maladies- their essential manifestations, general considerations, prognosis, clinical findings, the differential diagnosis and treatment. The work would be valuable so that the physician does not omit any important elements of the overall treatment plan. Optimal drug doses are cited together with annotated references, a general approach to the patient and common symptomatology. Surgical risk factors are outlined in considerable detail. The acquisition would be an important part of any personal medical library. The authors provide a current rendition with brand new references, up-to-date treatments/methods and medical technology. ... 1 stars (Who is the audience for this book?) - This is the first review I have been moved to write ... I bought this book because I like to read other people's perspectives on Physics; particularly when they are as smart as Roger Penrose undoutedly is. I have a PhD in theoretical physics (QFT) so I am hardly uneducated, or uninterested, in these topics. I found that this book tried to jump straight to an elegant mathermatical explanation without trying to impart any of the physical understanding. If you don't already know this material, this book won't help. At several points I just laughed out loud; one in particular when after explaining some arcane point in complex algebra involving a fraction, Penrose adds a comment along the lines of "I explained what a fraction was at the start of the book". He seems to be under the total delusion that you can just present the results of 20yrs of education in as many pages and people will just pick it up. I can only conclude that he is so familiar with this material that he has completely lost touch with its difficulty. The same must be said for those reviewers who liked this book; or else they are just lying to make themselves feel good; or perhaps they don't understand as much as they think they do! 5 stars (Shining brilliance!) - Penrose's book is really a thrilling experience. His intuition is brilliant. His explanations are crisp. His teaching ability can be probably only matched by Feynman. I got the book yesterday, but couldn't stop reading it so far. The first 150 pages I've read gave me a completely new perspective on complex calculus, which I had studied in undergraduate and thought I understood it. I am looking forward to other sections on differential geometry and other advanced topics. The book is very appropriate for people who have taken/are taking math courses but don't have good intuitive feel for the subjects covered---most math courses (especially, the grad ones) only emphasize the mathematics not the in... 5 stars (Vital for Comp) - Simply necessary to understanding doctor reports. Only odd part is how the "patient" in the pictures looks like Saddam Hussein. Maybe he's filing a claim too. 5 stars (A must for professionals in disability law and medicine) - The 5th Edition is the Rosetta Stone for evaluating permanent impairment. It is invaluable in workers' compensation, where many states, provinces and several countries either mandate its use or treat this work as an authorativie source of impairment evaluation. It may also come to have utility in ADA cases, especially with its emphasis on activities of daily living, and as a predicate to demonstrating the significance or insignificance of an impairment's effect on major life activities after Toyota vs Williams. The vision chapter represents the AMA's first major, published revision to the science and knowledge of eye impairments since the early 1900's. 5 stars (Nice Charts) - Although my copy came with 10 pages of errata sheets stuck in the front of it (presumably cured in the 5th version), I still got a lot out of reading through this book. The descriptions of impairment are de regeur reading for coming up with convincing settlement demands for soft tissue injuries. Someone's shoulder hurts? How do you say they have lost 20% of their upper body use as a result? Why not 90% of one finger, 50% of one hand, and 80% of one arm? Multiple impairments like these can be descriptively segmented to more fully elaborate what a patient is feeling, and how they are limited in daily activities. Both the plaintiff bar and the insurance community are well-served by this book. As for the medical accuracy of it, I'll take the AMA's word for it. ... 3 stars (Geosystems/Sixth Edition) - Good Book! Lots of good illustrations and examples, with an overubundance of current world data, and concepts. This book would be great to use in conjunction with classroom lectures for a sixteen week or full semester course, so that you have an opportunity to absorb pertinent material. With the amount of information in this book I would not recommend its' use for a short eight week internet course. 1 stars (This is NOT a paperback textbook!) - What Amazon neglects to inform you on this page is that this book is actually the *STUDY GUIDE* for the hardcover textbook, not the textbook in paperback form. Buyer beware!! 1 stars (Ugh!) - The subject of Physical Geography is challenging enough, the last thing students need is a poorly written text book. ...
