4 stars (students should think first before buying it) - This product works very good, as advertised. However, I bought it in hope to use it for my classes. I was using it with Sony ICD-P210 Voice Recorder. Unfortunately, it doesn't work if you record from your desk, even if you sit very close to the teacher (I've tried both Standard and High Quality recording). So if you want to use this program to recognize your teacher's speech, you will have to ask him to wear a microphone, and to hold your recorder in his pocket, and not to move a lot. For most of my teachers, it is not acceptable. Good luck! 4 stars (Memory Hog) - This is a great product. I bought because I am working full-time and going to grad school at night. I have significantly reduced the time required to produce cousework. Comments: 1) I have 1.12 GB of RAM, about 6 paragraphs of dictation kills the memory. I tried using it with 256 MB of RAM and immediately upgraded. 2) Be patient. The software gets better at recognizing your voice. I have found after about 6 paragraphs of dictation it does not recognize my voice as well. Other then that, it's truely amazing. If you were wondering, I am currently typing this out. I was writing a paper and killed the memory with Dragon. IBM VIAVOICE Simply Dictation Mac OS X

4 stars (Neat software!) - I recently purchased this software to experiment with voice recognition. I am dictating this review using ViaVoice Simply Dictation. After only an hour of set up, I find that the software is incredibly easy to use. I can tell with this will take some time to be used to, but would recommend it to anyone interested in the technology. 5 stars (This App rocks) - i think this is the best via voice. i had the old one it did not work i had to pronounce hard words that i dont know. over all the new one rocks 5 stars (An outstanding product!) - I'm not typing this review. It is being dictated directly into the space using the ibm ViaVoice simply dictation for Mac OS X. (the failure to capitalize is due to my lack of familiarity with the software, not the software itself) As you can see, this is pretty easy to use! In fact I just started using it at about 30 minutes ago. It took about an hour to train the system to my voice and set it up. I've had many years of experience in dictating to tape recorders and to live people, so my technique may be more consistent with what the dictation software expects than yours. All in all this seems to be a very useful tool particularly for people who dictate versions of the same letter on a daily basis. The software allows you to train it to words that are specific to your work and also to capture "Macro phrases" that might include entire paragraphs of text. I would highly recommend this software to anyone who has had experience in dictating for transcription. This is not for everyone as some attention to articulation and phrasing is necessary in any dictation, computer or human. If your willing to speak clearly and distinctly to your friendly computer this software will enable you to do exactly what I've done: to transcribe a paragraph without having to touch a key. ...

ScanSoft PaperPort 10

1 stars (A note to those thinking of Buying 9 instead of 10...) - Scansoft paperport 9 will not install with Windows XP service pack 2. They also is no fix for this. I've googled, gone to various forums and there is no fix. The official company site simply "advises" you to get Paperport 10 if you wish to have it work with Windows XP Service pack 2. 1 stars ( ScanSoft PaperPort 10 - Thumbs Down) - Many years ago, I switched from Papermaster to Paperport 7.0. The difference was so dramatic that I fell in love with Paperport right away. Since then I have upgraded as each new version was released. Paperport 9.0+ turned out to be the best that ScanSoft released. Version 10 has many problems including ease of use, missing features, instability when printing from an external document. My suggestion to those who have verson 9 is to keep it, and those contemplating purchasing Paperport for the first time, invest in version 9. 3 stars (Software ok, support, terrible) - If I were going to rate the software alone, it would be a four. However, you had better not have any problems with it, as the support is non-existent. When I reluctantly agreed to pay for support and asked for help, they never got back to me. 5 stars (Fantastic) - I see on this site that most people did not like this product. Well, I did. At first it was a dissapointment, but after I did lots of voice testing and corrections, it was great. No hands are needed and it is relitivley fast. Great Buy. 1 stars (Crashes, crashes, crashes - DO NOT BUY) - Installed ViaVoice 10 in Windows XP Pro... And sometimes it opens and sometimes it doesn't. Mainly doesn't. Then I find this...via Google.. Problem: After launching Dragon or ViaVoice and clicking a link in one of the menus, the system locks up or freezes. Other symptoms include Dragon NaturallySpeaking's Select-and-Say or ViaVoice's dictation and commands fail in Microsoft Office XP applications, such as Word and Microsoft Outlook. Cause: Microsoft Office XP's "Alternate User Input" installs a background process called CTFMON.exe which can interfere with Dragon or ViaVoice. The following information was taken from the Microsoft website: "...Ctfmon.exe monitors the active windows and provides text input service support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies...." And you can get NO, repeat, NO, help from ScanSoft. DO NOT BUY! ...

5 stars (Finally speech recognition that works) - Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8 is not perfect, but I believe it is as close as possible with today's technology. In fact, upgrading your hardware may be the best way to improve the performance. It happily eats up all the processing power I throw at it, and then some. But the result is better dictation that some office workers could have taken. It misunderstands from time to time, but at least it can spell even long and unusual words. The included headset is of poor quality and should be replaced as soon as possible. This has been the case all the way from version 5 when I first bought it. I have no idea why they would ruin their own reputation to pinch a few pennies like that. It would have been wiser to ship it without hardware at all: This is really a software product, after all. Personally I use a USB headset from Plantronics with very good results. It also works well with a common vocal performance microphone. Coincidentally it will also understand you if you sing... 5 stars (This Rocks) - Much better than previous versions. The engine is cleaner, more precise. IBM VIAVOICE for Mac OS X USB

2 stars (ViaVoice Mac OS X doesn't work beyond 10.3.5) - I recently purchased ViaVoice MAC OS X because I had used the OS 9 version and liked it. When I up-graded to a new G4 Powerbook running OS 10.3.7, I purchased the new version so that it would work with OS X. After installing it and going through the training, I found that I could not use it, because it kept unexpectedly quiting when I tried to launch Speakpad. I called Scansoft and was informed that it only works with 10.3.5 or below. I have searched many descriptions of the product and no mention of this was found. Tech support said that they had been working on it, but saw no new release in the near future. I would not recommend the product if you plan to use an up-to-date operating system. ScanSoft ought to make this clear in their product requierments. 5 stars (Outstandng product) - I receive my ViaVoice software last night one day after I ordered it. Amazon told me it would get here in seven to nine business days, but it came the next day. Hats off to Amazon for quick delivery. Thirty minutes after I opened the box, I was dictating on my Macintosh using ViaVoice. I took the time to go through two of the training lessons, and the more I read to ViaVoice the better it got at recognizing my words. Now, after only a few hours of working with ViaVoice, my dictations are almost one hundred% error free. I wholeheartedly recommend ViaVoice to anybody who is looking for a dictation package for the Macintosh which is price effective and easy to use. By the way, this entire review was dictated to ViaVoice. 5 stars (STUDENT PRODUCT ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!) - I bought this product as a student who needed to EXCEL in school! This product helped me like no other! It is amazing! I have a small problem with the recorder being slightly below what I wanted but the product proved it's worth OVER AND OVER AGAIN! I was able to record lectures and have my computer do all the translation! What an amazing product! It helped me in ways that I cannot explain! I looked on Scansoft's website WWW.SCANSOFT.COM and upgrade to a compatible recorder that was much higher quality. This product is defintely worth the $200 I spent on it. 5 stars (The Dragon listens) - Voice recognition software has come a long way. I began by trying the voice recognition engine in XP Professional, but was not pleased with the accuracy. Dragon has it together. It works. This version has definitely improved upon previous ones. They obviously have the engineering staff to do the job. The most important aspect of accuracy is careful pronunciation. You do not realize how imprecise your words are in the everyday conversation until you use voice recognition software. 4 stars (Good product - mostly. Bad company - maybe.) - Overall, this is a good product - with a few kinks. I agree with the one reviewer who commented on the lack of product support. The online PDF file just does not cut it. It tells you many things that the software can do but then fails to provide the "how to." Granted, it is a fairly simple program but the documentation is still lacking. The knowledge base is also less than adequate. As another reviewer mentioned, I also was unable to preserve links in any document conversion I tried - yes, I checked the document settings. When you go to the ScanSoft knowledge base and type in "link", you are presented with two solutions that simply do not work. I eventually found that the way to get the links to work - converting or printing from any source - was to 1) get the document converted over into PDF using PDF Converter Pro 2) manipulate and edit the document to your liking in PDF Converter Pro - they do have some get features here that blow Adobe away when you consider the price and the software footprint 3) save the document as PDF 4) then open the document up in Adobe Reader 7. Adobe Reader recognizes the links, PDF Converter Pro does not - this is a severe mistake on ScanSoft's part and you will not find this solution in their knowledge base (at least not at this time). For a while, I had PDF Converter Pro act as my default PDF reader, but then found it did not open links - went back to Adobe Reader - ScanSoft is now just an intermediary tool when they could have been a real challenge to Adobe. The two other things I don't like about ScanSoft is that 1) they charge $9.95 - which I refuse to pay - for technical support that should be included in a product manual 2) their registration procedure is not even disguised to look like they are actually taking in information for product affiliated reasons - it is a blatant market survey - and what is worse if you do try to register more than one product, they wi...

4 stars (Might change my fiance's life!!!!!) - My girlfriend has Multiple Sclerosis and has become limited in her ability to type. She was using an on-screen keyboard with a mouse, when I met her. One day I watched her type a short note to her mother she spent hours on two paragraphs. I told her that there had to be a better way and after a short search found ViaVoice. It was affordable and we decided to give it a try. We installed it the day it came and right away she was able to use its built in word processor to write letters to friends and family. We've only been working with it for 2 weeks, now, but it is a vast improvement over the onscreen keyboard. She can dictate a letter and make corrections in a fraction of the time possible before. I hate that it seems tied to Microsoft but it seems to be adaptable to other software systems. We are learning togather, it's fun. 3 stars (Continuous speech recognition needs a VERY fast CPU and RAM) - Those that say this software is "unstable" do not take into consideration the VERY high cpu usage needed to perform continuous speech recognition (as ooposed to "discrete" speech dictation used in IBM VoiceType, which was possible on a Pentium 1 233 Mhz, and required users to pause between words). In short: get a gigabyte of ram, specially if you're using WinXP. If you run Win2000 with 512MB ram, try to add an extra 256mb stick. And your cpu should be at the very least a 2Ghz Pentium 4, or higher, despite what the box claims.
