4 stars (Wonderful Insight into Resilence and Protective Factors) - I had been wanting to purchase this book for quite some time, but never got around to it until it was assigned for a psychology course I was enrolled in. True, it is a short text, and true, the grammar is not perfect - but it is not meant to be. Pelzer wrote the book as an adult, but tried to write it from his perspective when he was a child (the time period when he actually experienced the events detailed in the book). If this book had been written from a purely adult, grammatically "proper" perspective, it would have gained a more "distant" tone and thereby lost some of it's power to really grip and touch the reader. The text can be read in awe of what Pelzer experienced as a child, certainly. But that is not all one can gather from it. The trianglization, power struggles, and family dynamics which play out throughout the story are not only dramatic, but very clinically realistic. The potential effects of alcohol use on family structure are an eye-opener. And most of all, one should note the protective factors David found in his life which enabled him to survive his mother's horrendous patterns of abuse - while they are not nearly so dramatic as all the "punishment" he endured, they are just as significant. This would be a good book particularly for anyone who works with children (or plans to), whether they are a psychologist, counselor, educator, social worker, mentor, or even a parent. Too often adults see only the negative things that have happened to a child, and fear the effects that those things may have on the child's behavior or personality... it is just as important to be able to recognize what strengths, talents, and interests are in children which allow them to cope with or overcome negative factors. 1 stars (laundry list with no context) - If the abuse was real, or if even part of it was, my sympathy goes out to the author and my praise for rising above it. 4 stars (Tuesday's with Morrie) - A short story that makes you reflect on your life and whether or not you are achieving the dreams you set out for yourself. I recommend it. 5 stars (All About the LITTLE Things) - Yeah there is no way to describe the book. To capture the essence of it, the story behind it or what you come away with. Other then it reminds you of the basics of life and all that jazz in a non-boring-lecture-the-teacher-is-a-moron-kinda-way... ::sigh:: Read the book and then share the love and the knowledge! Buy it, pass it on. Whether you say it changes your life, or not, it does not matter. For though I believe it hasn't changed mine, it express what I have felt is the forever the fundamentals of life, and what needs to be remembered and enjoyed. (Combining my accounts, I originally wrote this May 20, 2002) 5 stars (To all the "Dick Wagner" and "Jon W " reviewers out there ...) - I feel sorry for you cold and disconnected individuals. If this book did not touch your soul, or move you to tears, I would be concerned about your ability (or inability rather) to empathize. This was one of the most sincere, honest, and poignant books I've ever read. It was well written - short and sweet. Morrie never claims to be philospher! He is simply a wise, gentle, and enlightened man who shares what he learned throughout his lifes journey. We should all be so lucky to know a Morrie in our life, and I thank Mitch for writing such a touching and compassionate book. This book is a MUST read. ... 4 stars (Managers & above: please read!) - If you don't know the difference between your I.Q. and your E.Q. and how much it matters in the workplace, then read this book--especially if you're a supervisor, manager, director or CEO. There's even an on-line test to see how you rate. Run--don't walk--and get this book. Better yet: order it right now on Amazon :-) (Your employees will thank you!) 5 stars (Fabulous Read) - This is the most thought-provoking book I've read in a long time. Without being simplistic, it introduced me to so many interesting things I could use to my benefit. Being intellectually smart is surely a strong advantage in our society, but it doesn't say nearly as much as your control and awareness over your own emotions. Have you ever wondered why you have emotions, how your brain works to process them, and how you can use them to your own advantage? I've never read a book that so clearly explains how it all works and what to do with it. 5 stars (Tremendous) - I wasn't familiar with the authors, but bought the book after reading the description and the amazing endorsements from the Dalai Lama and Stephen Covey. I was not disappointed! The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book explains and explores via great stories and profound research. 5 stars (How Practicing the Presence of God can Save You a lot of Grief) - An excellent - well organized and easily absorbed work about one of the most important subjects - which few of us think much about - the need for devotion in our lives. Most of us spend our thinking hours absorbed in worldly pursuits - fulfillment of immediate or, when it comes to loved ones, longer range concerns. Yet, few of us actually practice absorption in thinking about our relationship with God - actively feeling God's presence in our lives continually. Perhaps, many of us feel that we lack the courage of faith to believe that God is more than an idea, and act on that conviction. When we think of God - when we attend church - or generally when things fail to go as we wish - when we find ourselves in distress, trouble, or experiencing loss - we think in terms of salvation - our object is to get to 'dry ground' - to be delivered - to find Heaven - but we never really give complete preference to devotion - and when you think about it - as Joyce Meyer has - deeply - devotion really is the way to salvation. As Jesus has informed us - every hair on our head is numbered - and we ought to focus on that - how we present ourselves before the Lord - at every moment - giving deference to God - rather than people who happen to have something that we want. An observation of particular merit, I feel, is that most of our negative behaviors - dishonesty, violence and the like - arise from our obsession with gaining the approval and esteem of our fellow humans. Is this insight not true - and truth of the highest order? Meyer claims that God makes Himself absolutely accessible to us at every moment we chose to seek Him. Then, what reason is there to prioritize imagined approval from any of His creations when God's approval alone would seem to be the most important criteria for living this life, or any future one? 5 stars (A good book that everyone should read or listen to.) - Thi... 3 stars (Practical Yet Partial) - This book is based on a simple finding: "Research on mid-career, contemporary leaders led to [the] conclusion - few leaders finish well". Further, in the case where leaders did finish well, "their relationship to another person significantly enhanced their development". Thus the stage is set for the subject of mentoring, which the authors describe as (the concise definition): a relational experience through which one person empowers another by sharing God-given resources. Stanley and Clinton are well respected authorities in the field of leadership development, and this book represents a popular and "lightweight" version of far larger tomes, so providing easy access to their ideas. The authors focus mainly on the types of mentor who may enrich our lives, and how. The book explores nine common mentor types, and "ten commandments" required for successful mentoring. Two further types of mentoring receive special attention, namely The Constellation Model (a relational network of upward, downward, and lateral mentoring), and Peer Co-Mentoring (mutual mentoring with a close friend). The emphasis on the "relational experience" of mentoring is arguably both the greatest strength and the greatest weakness of the book. On the one hand, it offers one - in the words of the publishers - "access to the wisdom, experience, vision, and direction of those who have gone before". On the other hand, there is a great deal of emphasis on the values, skills, etc. which are transferred to the one being mentored, yet limited appreciation of how mentoring might point to God. The authors hardly touch on the type of mentoring which focuses on the "encounter with the Holy", and the sovereign grace required for a Christian leader to succeed and survive. In short, it tends towards a "Latin" theology of mentoring. The book has a strong foundation in research and experience, and for this alone it is well worth a look. It is characte... 5 stars (An Answer to Our Prayer of S.O.S.) - My soon-to-be-husband and I try to live as closely to His will and word as we can, but even so, disagreements had been tearing us apart recently. Even as we approach the doorstep of marriage, we'd begun to have doubts because of the frequent misunderstandings. He heard a radio spot on a Christian station talking about the book and, in a desperate attempt to mend our relationship, he mentioned it to me. I was just as frustrated as he was, so I bought it the next day. I read the whole book in about 3 hours. It was an easy read and, for someone so anxious to make things better, I couldn't put it down. He was at work when I read it in its entirity, but last night was eye-opening and awe-inspiring. Ladies, I highly recommend making a list of questions to ask your significant other/husband while reading. So many things occurred to me, even things like, "Do you really see it this way?" or, "Is this really how you feel when I say/do ____?" We assume that men are all simpletons, and they play the role rather convincingly sometimes, but this book gives great insight. Because of simple changes in wording, I was able to understand quite a few things about him that I thought I knew (but didn't get) before. The conversation we had based on the questions I wrote ironed out SO many things that had been plaguing us for several MONTHS; we haven't been this happy since the few spark-filled days after we first met. Finally, I must add something I found very helpful from this book. For longer than I've known my husband-to-be, I've struggled with depression. He's often encouraged me (in a concerned way, not a degrading one) to do things like lose weight or be active or have a more active social/spiritual life. I took these things to be insults, which only deepened my hole of worthlessness and low self-esteem. When we talked about the sections of the book that cover things like why they look at other women and what it means f... 5 stars (The Knitting experience: Book 1: The Knit Stitch) - I am an experience knitter and I love this book. The designs are not only simple but aesthetically beautiful. I am inspired to knit them all. Christine Montano. 5 stars (The Knit Stitch) - Loved this book. Good for beginners as well as seasoned knitters. 5 stars (This is the books that is teaching me to knit) - As a experienced crocheter, I've been disappointed with the lack of nice sweater patterns. So I decided to learn how to knit. After reading "Knitting for Dummies", I was just as confused as before. Then I picked up this book. The book is extremely easy to read and learn from. The step by step photos are very helpful when you are trying to decipher where the heck your hands, fingers, and yarn should be. By following along with the photos, I have been able to successfully complete two projects in this book, and I am beginning another one. The patterns are very nice. Of course, as with any pattern book, there are some that I have no interest in making, but there are at least 5 more that I can't wait to try. One reviewer has said that the patterns are monotanous with lots of knitting. Ms Melville states in the book that these projects were designed with lots of knitting on purpose, in order to have the new knitter practice, practice, practice. To me, there is an upside and a downside to this. The upside: by the time I finished the bulky yarn poncho, I had mastered the knit stitch and tension. The downside: I would like to make the Best Friend Jacket ( a cool assymetrical sweater ), but in order to get enough yarn for it, I'm going to be dropping a chunk of money for the yarn. This can be daunting for a newbie, who is unsure of their commitment to the craft (I, personally, am ordering my $100 worth of yarn today for the jacket, after 3 weeks of debating whether I would actually finish it or not) A side note on the patterns I have finished: The super bulky weight poncho turned out AW... 5 stars (The great help we all desire and need...) - This is one of the best couple "help" books I have ever read. It is Christian belief-based. A man is commanded to love a woman and a woman is commanded to respect a man by no other than God himself. But even if you don't believe in the Bible this has some great stuff. It points out some undeniable Truths about the nature of men and women. The truths are simple and the principles are easy to follow. You don't have to believe you have been commanded by God to do these things. Just know that if you both do them your marriage will be much more loving...and MUCH easier to understand. 5 stars (Love & Respect: The Love She Most Desires, The Respect He Desperately Needs) - Finally, a book that truly hits the issue on the head. Communication in marriage often deteriorates into a vicious cycle. The author clearly defines how it happens, why it happens, and how to change it. After reading his book, I put the principles into practice and noticed an immediate improvement in our relationship. This is the book I would recommend on marriage to couples. 1 stars (TERRIBLE BOOK- AVOID AT ALL COSTS) - This book was terrible. What he talked about could have been done in two pages. The writing was bad, the examples were not only sexist (and I'm a man!) they were not helpful or clear. I expected that his wife would have some impact in the writing of this book. Perhaps she might write a chapter or add a paragraph but no. It was all him repeating the same chapter over and over and over and over again. His Needs Her Needs was much better. I recommend an even better book, A Lasting Promise, wholeheartedly. That book was the best and puts this one to shame. ... 5 stars (Attitude determines Altitude) - This is a great book. I am a big Maxwell fan, and I loved reading this book. It is a compilation of chapters from some of Maxwell's other bestsellers. This book serves as a great reminder of how important our attitude is in every area of life. 5 stars (90% attitude and 10% situation!) - There is NOTHING more important than attitude when it comes to success in leadership! No, I mean it. In general this is just an all around true point: success is 90% attitude and 10% situation. How you deal with things as a leader has a profound impact on those around you and once again, John has produced a wonderful work that conveys all kinds of fantastic points that will help you develop and grow as a leader. I highly recommend it. (...) 5 stars (I give it 5 because it serves a good purpose.) - It's a good book to read, I love it. Attitude is very important in life and I think its important that people around us understand it. I have friends who need to read this, because of their negative attitude; it's hard to be around them. Great price, and I'm thinking to buy one for some of my friends so they can understand the importance of an attitude. There can be written something more deeper on a subject. But I think this book serves a purpose. Getting people to notice their attitude. Its nice and short, easy to read. Buy it for your house, have your family read it. But it for your friends with a wrong attitude. Hes very to the point, uses stories to further illustrate his points. Easily understood and he doesn't make you read through some endless junk writers sometimes use to fill in the pages. ... 4 stars (Leadership 101 by John Maxwell) - Many people attain positions of leadership in the organisations, community and other spheres of life but with no guidance of what good leadership entails. John Maxwell did a good job of writing a small book packed with useful guidance on how to be an effective leader. He divided the book into three parts. The first part describes how one can develop as a leader, whilst the second part explains the traits of a leader and the last part is on the impact that a leader can have on people. The need for a clear vision as a leader becomes very apparent after reading the book. As a leader one should be aiming at producing a lasting legacy, that is, one should be aiming at making a difference to the lives of others. Followers should be willing to follow you because of the positive influence that you have on people as a good leader. To be an effective leader, one needs to continually develop oneself. High quality leadership entails empowering others to exercise their huge potential for the benefit of the organisation or the team. Followers have to trust you as a leader and trust has to be earned from one's actions. One cannot hope to be an exceptional leader unless one is self-disciplined. Leadership starts with being able to lead yourself before one can lead others. The book is written in simple easy to follow style which makes it readable by anyone at leadership position in an organisation or other sphere of life. 5 stars (Vision) - A leader cant lead without vision. He/she cant reach that vision without people who are willing to follow and share that same vision. And in order for others to follow that leader has to show integrity, passion and earn respect in the process. He/she has to put the interest of the organization and its people above his/her own personal interests... then he/she can earn the title of a leader. 3 stars (A good entry level book into the world of leadership.) - John C. 5 stars (Lovely presentation, innovative ideas) - One of the reasons I love this book is its gorgeous presentation. Let's face it, at least 50% of a book's appeal is how it is photographed and laid out - this book gets an A from me. There are a few projects that are quite "Meh" (like the knitted crowns - though I think my daughter will love one) but the ideas are wonderful. It is worth a look. A small "notebook" is included inside the front cover, it is just knitter's graph paper but a cute idea even if I won't be using it. Knit a window/door screen with nylon thread? Why not? I also love the armchair cushion - I am inspired to find an old leather chair just to make that cushion. Another favorite is the little knitted "lanterns" meant for adding to a string of lights. Wrist warmers have been done to death, but here they are photographed on a model holding a guinea pig - I have to admit, I am charmed :^) A lot of luxury yarns and new ideas for knitting. 5 stars (irresistible for the adventurous knitter) - I LOVE this book. I got it 3 days ago & already have 2 projects started from it! The patterns are so well written; clear & concise. The photography is beautiful! And there are truly new & creative things in here! I love the creative "exercices" sprinkled throughout the book, like "describe your dream knitting day". Or my fave, is to "write down all of things that prevent you from being creative as you want to be, put them in a bag, and throw the bag away". It is a beautiful book that even my non-knitting friends love to flip through! 5 stars (Another Interesting New Entry) - There are a lot of very new, modern knitting books coming out as of late and this is one of them. The approach is away from the ordinary - the knitting most of us grew up with in the 1960-1980's. This book has some great patterns with versatility and it also includes ideas which are following the popular "salvaging" trend - using up old knitted items in new ways.
