5 stars (A Great Guide For Parents) - Of all the parenting books I've read this year this one has been most helpful. I love the cartoons! Sound advice for people who want to improve parenting skills. 5 stars (How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk) - Excellent book. This is as close as I have come to an instruction manual for parenting. 5 stars (the best for parenting) - This book examines love, communication, and methods for bringing up happy, secure, and respectful adults. Isn't this the major goal we all wish for? If you read it, you'll reread it dozens of times. ... 3 stars (A LONG WAIT FOR PRODUCT) - I ordered this product on the 3rd of August via expedited (2 day)shipping and it did not get here until the 13th of August!! Class started here on the 15th. The product itself was as it stated, so I can not complain about that. I would not use this shipper unless you have plenty of time to wait. 1 stars (Unhappy) - I was looking for a student workbook for practice in spanish. I ordered this book because it was listed as "like new",it took me almost three weeks to get it and when I did I found the worksheets for the first five chapters were cut out. I am now approaching my first term exam for those same chapters and have no book to review. 5 stars (The Best Spanish Resource I've ever Come Across) - I think that "Dos Mundos" is an excellent resource for both teachers AND students. I disagree that study of the book needs to be accompanied by teacher instruction and supervision. The beauty of the text, in my opinion, is that it makes self-teaching very easy. The grammar section at the back of each chapter is clearly explained in English, and there is a complete vocabulary list at the end of each chapter. The other beauty of the book is that it creates the closest thing to language immerson that you can get out of a book. There are many articles from Spanish-speakers, written in very natural Spanish. As for the person upset about the Mexican Spanish, I can't say that I agree with you. I was pleasantly surprised because the book actually has samplings of the language from all over the Spanish world. But in order to avoid confusion (which would make sense), they stuck to one main form of Spanish - Spain Spanish. I recommend this book for ANYONE - teacher and students (from beginner level write up to the advanced learner) ... 5 stars (Discernment for "part two" of life) - Our women's circle is studying this book together. We are middle-aged and over but are looking at a time of growth in this next part of our life-journey. The book is helping us to let our lives speak to each other and to ourselves. 5 stars ("Ask me whether what I have done is my life." (1)) - I got this book some time ago, when one of the professors at BC recommended it to me as a way to think about what I wanted to do with my life and of course, I never read it. However, I'm almost glad that I didn't read it until now, because at this point in my life I think I needed it more than I did when I was choosing a path. Palmer is basically telling his own story of vocation, including all the dark spots that he hit along the way. However, he emphasizes the need to see the good and the possibilities for growth in those dark spots. For example, in the final chapter he compares life to the changing seasons in an extended metaphor. For winter, he says, "Despite all appearances, of course, nature is not dead in winter--it has gone underground to renew itself and prepare for spring. Winter is a time when we are admonished, and even inclined, to do the same for ourselves" (101). His main point is that in order to do this (renew ourselves for growth in our vocation), each person should learn to listen to their inner self because that is the only way that we will truly become the full person that God created us to be. He does frequently refer to religious ideas like this but, the nice thing about his writing is even though he is religious, this idea does not overwhelm the book and it can really be for anyone (though I'm sure that an atheist might not get as much out of this as a religious person would). This book helped me to look at my life and see if I could discover what my "inner self" has been trying to tell me, even in times of my darkness and "winter", about my vocation. 5 stars (Palmer is the Real Deal) - I generally make not... 5 stars (I'm using it to enter this, works good!) - it works really well for me I'm using it right now to enter this I do have to go back and correct things every now on than and it doesn't work good for my Dad. in fact it works horrible! but keeps getting better and bet DidDidme! we did had some problems installing it and we had to download a update because there was a problem with it originally. but for me and my Mom it works great!!! 5 stars (Really Pleased!) - I am really pleased with iListen. I am an investigator and have begun using iListen to dictate my interview summaries. It has lived up to my expectations. The enrolling process of learning your voice has been effective as has the correction process (though the correction process is fairly time consuming). I have also created a profile to use with my Olympus voice recorder, which is working fairly well too. The only draw back is the difficulty that the program has in recognizing last names, but I expect that will improve with usage. The training manual is worth printing out so that you can use it as a reference while you're dictating. I also had excellent customer service as the CD Rom that came with the package was defective. The company e-mailed me a downloadable version of the program within a day. 1 stars (iListen does not run on Mac OS X 10.3.9) - Just an awful product. Go through all the training and then the damn thing wont load. It givs you a kern_protection-error which is absolutely indecipherable. Probably the single worst product I have ever purchased. ... 4 stars (Max McLean's Performance) - I purchased this package 3 years ago and have noticed the price increase since. I was considering a repeat purchase as a gift and noticed Mr. McLean's new recording for the ESV translation. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/193104743X/ref=cm_aya_asin.title/104-1927007-5627968?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance I ended up buying this and also the ESV recording. Without elaborating the NIV and ESV translation standards, both products deliver in their unique ways... NIV recording - More dramatization. ESV recording - Background music is extremely subtle and not intrusive at all. Even my sibling who prefer an all voice recording found it delightful and very acceptable. Both recordings do not have that FM (mono) radio quality broadcast sound noticeable in other audio bible products from various vendors. Blessings. 5 stars (Speedy, inexpensive) - This order was fast, and the least expensive. I would buy another one in a heartbeat. 5 stars (Exactly as Advertised) - The readings of the Bible, New International Version, by Max McLean are a tremendous benefit as I try to work additional Bible study into my busy schedule. I listen to the readings primarily while exercising in the morning either before or after my Bible reading time. It enhances my understanding by offering pronunciation clues to some of the hard-to-pronounce names and places in the Bible while providing a different reading interpretation. I would highly recommend this product to anyone hoping to spend more time in The Word. ... 5 stars ( iListen review for the Alaska Apple Users' Group) - When the time came to write this review, I unfortunately came down with a case of laryngitis and therefore found the review quite a bit more challenging! I then worked on trying to get the program to deal with my hoarse voice... but iListen came through pretty well, and I wrote this review with very little use of the keyboard. IListen is, quite simply, a powerful, comprehensive voice recognition and command system for the Macintosh. It uses a system of recognizing sounds and putting them into context to create words or commands on your Mac (horrific oversimplification). I have played around with systems like this in the past, and I'll admit that I have been less than impressed with the results. The voice recognition system that comes with OS 9 and 10 certainly didn't hold up to hard use (and doesn't have a dictation mode, anyway) and my interest in a robust system is more than a passing interest, in that my work requires me to dictate large quantities of text at very high rate of speed. Accuracy and ability to easily correct my errors are also paramount to me, and so it was with great interest that I loaded up iListen and set about trying to use it for simple home applications. Set up of the program was very easy, and with a little bit of messing around with system preferences I got the program fully working. There is a somewhat lengthy initial period of training the program to recognize your voice, which consists of reading chunks of text into this system so that it can learn your particular style of speech. Interestingly enough, the program is also capable of assimilating text documents you have already made to try and learn your style of writing. The more time and effort you put into the training period (both initially and along the way, any time you like), the better the program does with your speech. IListen has several modes of function, including a dictation mode, a spelling mode, and a c... 5 stars (The Dog Listener) - This book is one of the best on understanding dogs and also for training them. Our daughter Dr. Shannon Dominguez DCH who is head of the Maui Animal Therapy Program --- highly recommends this book. [...] She has trained therapy dogs in a short time using these methods. We have adopted two little terriers from shelter and they are respondeing beautifully to the day by day suggestions on how to train young as well as old dogs and we would say these methods would work on children :- ) as well!! 4 stars (A review on the author) - Although the book is great, it speaks for itself and I'm not here to review it. I emailed the author, or someone who works with her, at the email address I got from Jan's website. First of all, a little background. I have a two-year-old border collie/lab who I've had since he was seven weeks. I adore him. I have been working from home with the occasional temp job up until two months ago. I now work 5 days a week outside the house. I wrote to this person asking advice on certain things relating to walking the dog, and mentioned the hours my dog is being left alone while I'm at work. My response was that I am "selfish" and unfit to have a dog. This coming from someone who was once so clueless about raising dogs that she put one of her own to sleep. I have been looking into getting a dogwalker for my pooch, which as a person concerned for dogs, she could have suggested. But her only suggestion was my poor dog, I shouldn't have him. Whereas the book is a good read with good methods, I would suggest a second thought before asking her or her staff any questions personally. She, or whoever that was, is rather selective in the dogs she'll help according to what she thinks of their owners. It was a negative experience trying to get any kind of advice from them. Rather than pointing out something wrong and offering suggestions to rectify it to someone who is obviously open to change, she chose instead to s...
