5 stars (A Fix For Political Junkies) - If you love politics - this is your driver's manual. I only wish it was published sooner after the election. You will find nearly everything you want to know about every Governor, Senator and Congressman plus details from their district - voting results for president, demographics, and history. I have bought this book every election cycle since 1984 and I keep going back to each one for information. If you love politics - this book needs to be in your library! Michael Barone is a genius - catch him on Fox News and don't forget to read another one of his books "Our Country: The Shaping of America From Roosevelt to Reagan." 1 stars (A Once Great Series Contiues Its Slide Down the Tubes) - What was once an indispensable guide to US politics has been steadily ruined over the years by the shrill, sanctimonious editorializing of Michael Barone. I used to by new editions of this series every two years but quit several years ago because I was getting less information and more op-ed preaching. I did pick up a copy of this edition at a local book store and spent a great deal of time flipping thorough it and saw that little has changed. Barone is simply a blind apologists for the Bush administration and contemptuously dismisses anyone who does not subscribe to his philosophy as merely being a part of the "feminist left." It is such a shame, as a lot of the information in here is valuable to someone with an interest in US politics and elections. It is too bad Barone's ego has gotten in the way and ruined a once great series. 2 stars (The Red State Guide to Congress) - If everything is going to be divided into red state/blue state this is certainly the red state guide to congress with CQ's Politics in America the Blue State one. Barone disgustingly endorses the swift boat people's campaign against John Kerry but as is noted on the back Barone is a Fox "News" commentator. Barone takes the Republican line on a lot of things. 5 stars (Ginormous) - This tome is huge and full of great info for the practicing acupunturist and layman alike. Being the latter its size is a bit intimidating but well worth the money and time to read through. I also purchased the excellent flash cards by the same publisher. 5 stars (My fave acupuncture book, one of my favorite Paperweights) - Really a phenomenal book- the best, most complete, and authoritative book on acupuncture for students and practitioners. If you're a regular person, though, don't expect to be able to use this info - it's for professionals. My favorite things about it are the anatomical point location drawings, and the references to Chinese classic acupuncture texts. Since not all of these texts have been translated into English, this is a treasure. Besides that, it has other uses: My desk from IKEA isn't too sturdy. The place you put the keyboard has a pad for the butt of your palms (ergonomic, but not really), but that part is attached by hinges (because it's so important to hide the keyboard when you're not using it) and I put a lot of weight there, and today the second of its three hinges broke. It just hung there looking stupid. It seemed to be saying, "See, wasn't it worth it to spend three hours lost in IKEA wandering around looking for the checkout, grunting me into the car, putting me together, then dissembling me and moving me across town to your new house, and reassembling me?" My wife and I determined that screwing door jam deadbolt lock hole covers across the space would be the ideal engineering solution. But to drill into it, I needed a solid surface beneath it. I placed atop my chair seat a hefty trinity of Harrison's, A Manual of Acupuncture , and A Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine, plus the more slim Dao of Chinese Medicine to create a firm work table. With the help of those books and their authors, I was able to fix my desk, and now I obviously am able to work again. In fact, I spent more time writing this ... 3 stars (Tone is wearing) - In "Bird by Bird," author Anne Lamott offers a reasonable amount of advice on the craft and reality of writing. Many of her suggestions are intriguing and creative: writing to a one-inch frame, comparing writing to a Polaroid photo, writing as a letter or a present. The best and most compelling sections of this book are those in which she writes extensively about her own experiences. Several sections are genuinely moving. Unfortunately, Lamott has a rambling, obsessive, stream-of-consciousness style of writing which reminds me of the Cathy comic strip. Here's an example from the book: "You may begin showing signs of schizophrenia--like you'll stare at the word schizophrenia so long that it will start to look wrong and you won't be able to find it in the dictionary and you'll start to think you made it up, and then you'll notice a tiny mouth sore, one of those tiny canker sores that your tongue can't keep away from, that feels like a wound the size of a marble, but when you go to study it in the mirror, you see that it is a white spot roughly as big as a pinhead. Still, the next thing you know--because you're spending too much time alone--you are convinced that you have mouth cancer, just like good old Sigmund, and you know instantly that doctors will have to cut away half your jaw, trying to save your miserable obsessive-compulsive head from being cannibalized by the cancer, and you'll have to go around wearing a hood over your entire face, and no one will ever want to kiss you again, not that they ever really did." Some readers may find that style of writing delightfully funny. I found it wearing and annoying. To be fair, in this excerpt, Lamott was illustrating how the mind wanders when one is trying to write. But this was not the first excerpt in the book that dealt with mouth sores, and this writing style pervades the entire book. It should also be noted that Lamott uses frequent profanity. I would not be comfortable recommending ... 5 stars (MY DREAM REBIRTHED!) - It has been almost 18 months ago since my dream died in the failure of business. I experience pain in my family financial, attitude problems, marriage issues etc. I have read many inspirational books, listened to hundreds tapes and sermons about visioning and birthing dreams, but only after I read Joel's book, my dream is no longer a dream anymore! I keep thanking God for creating a person like Joel Osteen, and chose Victoria for his companion. I bless God for what He has done to Joel and Victoria for my examples of life. I start doing Joel's advise and it works! Now I enjoy the growth my business in my balley, and about to launch it after it reachs 9 months pregnancy in January. I will keep you in touch by then, so you will know how this book has benefited me to life. God bless you. 5 stars (Study Guide) - This is a great way to supplement the information in the book. It helps bring it all into perspective and apply it to your life. 2 stars (your better life now) - i bought the book, cause i thought i'd find in it the suday morning messages of Joel Osteen; however it's not that. I am trying to saythe book is not good, but me, i needed the Sunday messages instead. ... 1 stars (Watch Out - Automatic Renewals and No Refunds) - This is not a complaint about Amazon, just the Wall Street Journal On-Line. I subscribed to WSJ Online and used a credit card to pay. As my subscription was ending, I started receiving e-mails saying that my credit card had expired and the subscription would not renew. That was fine with me because I hardly ever used it. Despite those messages, the subscription did renew and I received a much higher charge on my credit card than I had paid in the previous year. When I tried to cancel my unwanted subscription I was told that WSJ Online would not give any refunds and that I was stuck with the one year subscription. 5 stars (The WSJ has the best information) - I enjoy reading the Wall Street Journal Online. You don't have the clutter of newspapers, and you can save the articles you like on your computer. You can also use Google Desktop to index your computer so that if you want to search for a Wall Street Journal article that you saved on your computer you can put in a keyword and find it fairly quickly. The online subscription is also much cheaper in cost than the print version and to me far more convenient. The cost was much cheaper before. After the WSJ added the weekend edition, the price was raised, and it seems there is very little discounting as I have searched for a greater discount. You just have to learn how to navigate around the newspaper. My favorite thing to do is to click on Today's Print Edition on the left side. You can then see most of the important articles. I also like the feature where you click on most popular articles for the day, week and month. When you open an article, you will see that feature on the upper right hand side. Click on most popular. You can customize your page, and select an industry that you want to read about, and everyday you will see articles pertaining specifically to that industry. You can also see the European or Asian Wall Street Journal and ge... Dow Jones :: WSJ :: wsj com :: :: The Wall Street Journal Online- One-Year Online Subscription
