4 stars (Rainy days) - Despite the misinformed rantings of people like Tom Cruise, clinical depression is a terrible and widespread problem. The best description I've heard yet is that it's a cancer of the soul. And of all the types, postpartum depression is perhaps the most neglected -- some people don't even know it exists, let alone how it should be treated. That is the heart of Brooke Shields' memoir "Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression." This is not a glitzy showbiz autobiography, but a wrenching look at one woman's struggle to have a baby, and then to regain her own happiness. In 2001, Shields married producer/writer Chris Henchy, and soon they were trying for a baby. But because of cervical scarring, getting pregnant was difficult, and despite all the people prattling about adoption and relaxation, Shields and Henchy tried in vitro fertilization (IVF), and after a traumatic miscarriage, finally had a baby girl. But baby Rowan was less than a day old when Shields began feeling depression and anxiety attacks. Initially she chalked this up to the difficult C-section birth and the newness of the experience, but her feelings continued over the months that followed. Though she tried to tackle her postpartum depression by herself, the help of friends and the drug Paxil were what brought her back out of the pit. The first fifty pages of "Down Came the Rain" make it seem like this will be an up-and-down story, with generous amounts of self-deprecating humour. Shields lightens the mood with humour and a willingness to reveal her unflattering or goofy thoughts, such as thinking about those chest-bursting scenes from "Alien" during a C-section. But after that, a grimmer tone takes over the book. She was self-motivated to master typing, yet viewed typing practice as work rather than play. An unexpected alternate target turned out to be the parent. Expectations: The student understood that mastering typing would take a long time, and that three 10-minute lessons per day is better than one 30-minute session. Although the program is fun, the expectation that the student view it as a pure game was unrealistic. Yet, for the parent, it was a pure game; silly but entertaining. She engaged in adventures on a treasure island, and competed in games by demonstrating typing proficiency. When the final stages of the game are reached, the castle offers a collection of books to type, as well as other games, e.g., a run away from the mummy type of game; both were enjoying. Narration was implemented with the aid of comical cartoon characters. This added to the enjoyment of the program, especially during the initial introduction before the student mastered any typing skills. The student was motivated to advance to higher levels in the game, and understood that it only occurred with advancement in typing skills. Multi-Person: The game supports multiple students. The parent started using the game out of curiosity, and became hooked. 4 stars (Our Legacy) - "Devotional Classics" is the companion volume to Foster's "Spiritual Classics." Foster and Smith designed it as weekly devotional guide to 52 classic historical authors on the devotional life. They catalog their readings using the Renovare conceptualization of six strands in historical spirituality: the prayer-filled life, the virtuous life, the Spirit-empowered life, the compassionate life, the word-centered life, and the sacramental life. These six categories along with their 52 representative authors combined with the introductions by Foster and Smith, offer readers a fine introduction to Christian devotional thinking. As with "Spiritual Classics," the snippets are at times hard to fully digest out of the context of their original writings. Hopefully, readers will be motivated to read many of the 52 author's full works. 5 stars (A book of equal quality to the firm's body of work.) - I won't bore you with what an excellent firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson is, their 250 architectural design awards are evidence of the quality of the body of their work. I instead would like to review the quality of this publication. In over thirty years of architectural practice and school I don't know if I have seen a better constructed book. The contributions by Peter Bohlin and James Cutler as well as the introduction by Thomas Fisher frame the twelve houses is such a way as to clear understanding of the design and construction process that make these projects worth serious study. It is seldom that I open a book for the first time and fell such "WOW" at the quality of its content and construction of the book. It is a work of art in my opinion. Oscar Riera Ojeda has done an excellent job as editor of this work. 5 stars (Where does the richest man in the world hang his hat?) - Question: Where doe the richest man in the world hang his hat? Answer: In a house built by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. In a new monograph from Rizzoli, Arcadian Architecture focuses on 12 private commissions built by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. As the title suggests Arcadian Architecture showcases homes that have a rustic or peaceful feeling, heightened by harmonious blending into their surroundings. The houses have a warm earthy minimal style inside and outside, created from wood, concrete, rock and stone. They look as if they grew in the landscape rather than being built there. Each of the 12 houses is presented in great detail, the captions, elevation drawings, sketches, and photos provide the reader with a personal tour of each property. One of the featured projects in Arcadian Architecture is, " A Pacific Rim Estate", is a residential compound near Seattle perched on a steep site, leading down to the edge of Lake Washington. ResumeMaker Career Edition

3 stars (Dissapointed with the Resume Maker Software) - I recently purchased this software from Amazon, and I've been experiencing technical problems from the moment it was installed on my computer. I am using the program at work, on my brand new Dell system, and it just won't act right! The print preview function creates error messages, and when I printed my resume the software placed weired lines and boxes on my resume. I've contacted tech support, and they are unsure as to what the problem might be. They've asked me to switch printers, remove the software, and then install the software. We've been going back and forth for about 2 weeks. I've used a previous edition of Resume Maker and I had technical problems with the software, but I assumed it was because my computer was a bit older. As for the content of the software, I do feel that it offers some useful information. You are provided with a resume coach, with tips on the types of resume that may suit you. I'm giving this product 3 stars because of the quality of the software. 2 stars (Disappointed by poor quality software...) - I was very disappointed by this software. Sure it has some good features (that's why I gave 2 instead of 1) but the built in word processor is terrible (Nope, I was not expecting another MS Word but at least expected consistency between various features/parts of the software). One of the supposedly great features of Resumemaker is the ability to preserve some general formatting if you choose to (e.g.) send the resume as plain text (an important thing mind you) in an e-mail. It does so by offering a number of styles for formatting your Resume. For example, for the Summary section, you can choose a bulleted list as formatting style. Resumemaker would create one card for each bullet item you create. If you send the Resume as plain text in an e-mail, Resume maker would format each of these bullet items with a * in front. 5 stars (Lucky employees have managers who apply this book....) - This book provides an excellent insight and discussion of the priorities that managers and leaders should make while attempting to guide their employees and others around them to personal and group success. Once these priorities are established in the leader or manager's repertoire then their success is set to follow as well. Managers should follow the simple guidleines presented in this book, to create and gain employees who are engaged which in turn contributes to the success of the manager. ...and successful managers have lucky employees! 5 stars (An Excellent Book Despite the Questionable Title) - REVIEW: The title of this book was an immediate turn-off for me because of the hyped-up nature of the phrase, "The One Thing". I'm always on the look out for charlatans who tend to make use of such exaggerated claims more often than the average author. However, I decided to read this book anyway since I read the two books that Marcus Buckingham is coauthor of, First Break All the Rules and Now, Discover Your Strengths, and those two books are two of my favorites. I'm glad I read this book and I now have a third favorite book having Marcus Bucking ham as an author. In short, the knowledge I gained from this book will help make me a more successful manager. The author has a clear and concise theory and uses the right amount of practical advice on managing and leading people and organizations. Perhaps the most important thing I learned from The One Thing is the difference between managing and leading. These terms are thrown around all the time in mass market business books, but this is the first one that I have read which very clearly defines the distinction between the two and concisely and practically explains how the roles differ in an organization. Residential Lighting - A Practical Guide

5 stars (A lighting technique that works!) - I've read a few other lighting books over the years but found that Whitehead's approach is superior for creating moods in rooms. My wife and I prototype interiors in our home and the results from "A Practical Guide" have been outstanding. We move and change the lighting with temporary luminaires and various wattages to explore the various possibilities before using them in real designs for clients. 1 stars (What the...I have to give at least 1 star????) - You want 3D? Popsicle stick models would be more accurate, easier, and you'll have fun eating the popsicles. I could go on (and on and on) about my grievances with this software, but I'll just say these 5 things, which only represent a subset of the pain you can expect if you choose to ignore the warnings here. 1) Marketing people, not the team of 3 that developed the software, should have to be able to demonstrate any of the products claims; severed digits, starting with the thumb, should be the penalty for failure. 2) The manual is no better for mulch or nuclear fusion than it is for using this program (it's the equivalent of "remove foil lid, stir, enjoy!" on pudding cups). 3) Welcome to the nonsensical and unresolvable error generator function of this program: "An exterior wall is missing" is my favorite, because a minute ago it was fine, all the same walls are there, I haven't changed any of them and I was adding a bush in the back yard when the error occurred, and the only way to correct the error is to delete all the walls and start over. 4) Grow plants...AHHHH they're taking over the neighbor's lawn! The daffodils are 14 feet tall and we've got a 140-foot tall dwarf pine! (Not to mention, I'm designing a landscape, so why is the default age for every blade of grass I add 25 years?) 5) Once I had a reasonable replica of my house drawn (and by "reasonable" I mean a misshapen box with a roof over most walls that in no way resembled the place I live but was the end result of...Saturday), I start working on the landscape. For inexplicable reasons, drawing in a fence caused the windows to float 19 feet, 4 inches above the house. The reasonable altho frustrating solution would be to laboriously go back and 1 by 1 rehang them to their correct height, but this beast is not reasonable.
