1 stars (blah blah) - I used to like the Sports Guy before he got all cocky. You may live in a sports mansion, but your writing style is piss poor. 4 stars (Tremendous upside potential) - I'm a Yankees fan, but after living in Boston for a couple of years I can appreciate the pain and agony that Red Sox fans have endured. Very funny and entertaining- not the least bit bland which is so typical of books that focus on sports. 5 stars (Give this one a Pullet Surprise* (see footnote)) - Oh man, what a great book! Bill Simmons is not just one of our best sportswriters, but he's one of our best writers, period. This book epitomizes "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat." As a sometime New Orleans Saints fan, I can identify so much with everything Simmons writes about. Except the thrill of victory part. At any rate, Simmons writes straight from the gut in a way that any true sports fan can embrace. It helps if you are a Red Sox fan, but that is not a pre-requisite.* (see another footnote) If you have ever faithfully rooted for a team that always breaks your heart, and then, suddenly, they win it all, what do you do? How do you react? Probably a lot like Simmons. Packed with footnotes that are as funny and insightful as the original prose, this book will provide the reader with some grin-inducing entertainment and also food for thought. What you get here is a highly personalized, almost impressionistic, account of the ultimate triumph of the Red Sox and the city of Boston. It reminds me of a couple of other fine sports-related books I've read recently that tell a grand tale by focusing on small vignettes and details.* (See yet another footnote.) Bottom line...pick this one up ASAP, before the dreaded Yankees makes some kind of freakish comeback. FOOTNOTES: 1. "A Pullet Surprise" is how one young high school student once spelled the name for the highest award for journalism. 2. In the 2004 ALCS, everyone in the known universe, outside of the Bronx... 5 stars (A huge smack of reminder) - Let's face it, we are not dumb. In the very deep core of our intuition and innate propensity, we know when someone isn't 'into you'. But because we are all born good beings and our instincts tells us to; first, believe and trust, we do get hurt. And continue to get hurt knowing we are hurting. Being both sympathetic and selfish, we fall into this little yet very dangerous hole called 'DENIAL'. This book is funny, painfully honest and a great smack of reminder to tell us 'we don't need to live with unhappiness and wonder if we really deserve it but embrace happiness and KNOW we deserve it. Absolutely love it. 1 stars (A sexist view of men) - If you truly believe that "Men are not complicated, although they'd like you to think they are" and "there are no mixed messages", as the product description echoes, this book may be for you-- but why do you need it? If men are so stupid, simple, and inferior, do you really need to buy a book to understand them? Men aren't dim simpletons, and you're not going to improve your understanding of them by treating them so. If you want to find and understand a man you can respect, look for books that at least respect men. ... 5 stars (Superseded by a better second edition) - When industry leaders such as Cem Kaner and Bret Pettichord extol the virtues of this book you can be assured that it is great - everything they and other reviewers have said is on target. Moreover, you'd be hard-pressed to walk into the testing area in any company and not see a copy of this book on someone's desk. That said, instead of this book you should get the second edition, which is a major rewrite, and also expanded in scope to include testing mobile systems. This edition is titled, "Testing Applications on the Web: Test Planning for Mobile and Internet-Based Systems" ISBN 0471201006, and is everything others have said about this first edition - and more! Even with a better second edition, this book deserves the five stars I gave it because of the influence it has had on the testing profession. Moreoever, this first edition is not out-of-date, and is still a great book if you don't need information about testing mobile web systems at this time (although it's a safe bet you will in the future). 4 stars (Organized and professional) - This book is about web testing in general, not just performance testing, and is a must have for the professional testing engineer. Chapters 7 and 8, on performance and scalability give a very good introduction to the subject, and include a great sample performance testing plan. Michael Czeiszperger Web Performance, Inc. Stress Testing Software http://www.webperformanceinc.com 5 stars (Superb introduction to the complexities of web testing) - I have been in web testing for 3.5 years and this was the first book I found on the subject. My only complaint is that it took so long to come out, but I won't hold that against Nguyen or Wiley. It is a superb introduction to the complexities of web testing, which despite the protests of standalone application testers, is much more difficult and technical than traditional application testing. Not only does the tester need to know the... 5 stars (Excellent) - As a long-time researcher and historical fencer, I can say that this is simply the best non-monographical book on the longsword out there. Guy Windsor is a first-rate teacher, and this comes across plainly in his writing and in the organization of this book. The book provides enough historical material to demonstrate where the original concepts and techniques can be found, then expands into clearly-defined lessons from a teacher with considerable experience. Many of the common mistakes are identified and advice is given on how to avoid them or correct them. Actions are explained in terms of martial soundness and correct body-mechanics. Illustrations are numerous, clear and relevant. Furthermore, Guy's writing style is dynamic and interesting, making the Companion a good read as well as a useful training tool. A high-quality, informative and well-written book that I heartily recommend to all serious students of the late-Medieval sword-arts. 5 stars (A great book for those who want to learn real swordsmanship) - I just got my copy of this book, and I am suitably impressed. This book is mainly based on the Italian masters, notably Fiore di Liberi's work. And as such, the terms given here for the guards and cuts are in italian. Initially described in english as well, but italian after that. Now, this may be confusing for those who are beginners or non-italian speakers. More on this in a minute. I like the fact that this book contains plenty of one and two person exercises to work through, illustrated with actual photos that are clear and easy to follow. This book also includes warm ups that should be done before practice begins, and some great exercises on body mechanics. You may wonder what being able to keep your balance on one foot has to do with swordsmanship, especially doing this with your eyes closed (Harder than it sounds!). Nothing, and yet, everything. Proper balance, footwork, and body mechanics are essential to good technique, a...
