Geometry for Enjoyment - Challenge

4 stars (a teacher's perspective) - I have taught an honors high school geometry class for almost 11 years using this book. It has its strengths and weaknesses, but I've been quite happy with it. First its strengths: it presents geometry in a mathematician's manner, starting with a few postulates and advancing one theorem at a time. For example, it doesn't tell you that the angles of a triangle add to 180 degrees until it discusses the parallel postulate on which that theorem is based. It proves everything that the authors think is within the understanding of a strong high school geometry student. The problems range from easy to very hard, with a strong emphasis on proof in the first chapters. Students are expected to solve some of the problems creatively, which is why some students who reviewed this book are frustrated by it. This means the book does a good job of presenting math the way it really is (guess, experiment, prove) instead of what students think it is (apply a formula, get the answer). The problems without solutions mentioned in the other reviews are few and far between indeed. Its weaknesses: the book really is intended for more self-motivated students that you normally find in high school. I imagine that this book might be off-putting for kids who don't really care about math. I don't like how the information at the beginning of the book is divided into chapters, but I just clump the information differently when I teach it. I think that some of the proofs left out of the book are quite accessible to motivated students, and I teach them. I have also been able to teach theorems beyond the scope of the book, which suggests that the book could have gone into more detail. Overall, I recommend this book for a geometry course for motivated and bright high school students. I do not recommend it for self-study or for very basic courses. Vector Mechanics for Engineers- Statics and Dynamics

2 stars (A poor example of engineering mechanics textbook) - I was forced into purchasing this group of books for my university engineering program as all of the homework problems required were straight from this book. Additionally, the books were packaged with schaums problem sets that were particularly useless (schaums outlines are usually excellent, but their problem sets did not contain all of the detail and had nothing extra to offer over Beer and Johnston's textbook) and therefore a waste of my money. With that said, the only redeeming value of this book is the sheer number of exercises and answers (numerical answers with no explanation, however). The writing quality suffers what english majors call overuse of passive voice. Overuse of the words "is," "will," "are," etc. characterize this style. With the lack of acting verbs in sentences, the book effectively numbs the mind and puts the reader to sleep. This passive use of verbage also serves to take the emphasis off of the important parts of sentences. Aside from stylistic issues with the english language, the book also suffers from a lack of vision. The authors did not provide a good methodology to approaching problems at all. They hint at it, by telling the student to draw pictures. However, in examples, the authors jump from one step to the next without much explanation of how a person would discover the techniques themselves. This makes the homework problems particularly difficult when a completely different approach than the one in the examples is required. There are also derivation and explanation issues. For instance, in the handling of the precession of free bodies (this example sticks out in particular), the author provides a diagram and some equations. However, students cannot precede merely from what the author explained. The student, in order to approach the problems, must assume the validity of the vector diagrams and their relationships, along with equations, seperately. The diagrams ...

4 stars (Very good for first-time learner of statistics) - I agree with the previous reviewer Jason --- this book is very good in helping a first-time learner understand statistics applied to real-life situations. Usually university teachers don't make good choices for course textbooks but in this case, this book is absolutely the most correct choice. 5 stars (take another look) - This introductory statistics book is unlike any other I read, so it is understandable why it received negative reviews. First off, it deals with "the practice" of statistics, so don't expect mathematical explanations of the statistical analyses presented. Second, it thoroughly explains the conceptual basis and applied aspects of statistics, so don't be surprised if it is a bit more wordy or repetitive than other statistics books. Reenforcement is necessary when learning a new language, and it doesn't assume mathematical formulas are understandable without explanations. Its highlight is its coverage of collecting data. Most statistics books don't even mention how data is collected, or should be collected; they only show you how to analyze it. General principles of sampling and experimentation are licidly covered, as are the implications of using these two fundamentally different approaches to research. The second strong point of this book is its general overview of statistics. It shows how different analyses are used for different types of data (categorical vs. quantitative), although the general premise is the same--relationship between variables. Finally, it makes a connection between real data and theoretical distributions. Most statistics books start off saying, "assume the data follow a normal distribution" but real data never does. Moore and McCabe explains how we can use a mathematical formula to model our real data, and the advantages and limitations of doing so. Alif Baa- Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds

4 stars (Good book, bad DVDs) - This was the textbook for a university Arabic class I took. The book is good, but the included DVDs are awful and annoying. I recommend this book, but suggest purchasing the Instant Immersion Arabic 2-cd set to learn some vocabulary and phrases (for about $9.99). 4 stars (Great for self-study) - I met with a partner daily for an hour each day for 6-8 weeks, and we learned a great deal from this book. It is definitely good enough for self-study. The one problem is that for the vocabulary and cultural activities, it assumes you have a teacher to fill in the details, so we didn't get much out of those. We did learn to read, write, and pronounce all the sounds, and it's terrifically neat that I can now read basic Arabic signs which are in pictures in the newspaper. 3 stars (Workbook #1) - This is a somewhat cumbersome workbook designed for conventional advanced high-school or college-level classwork. I find it to be neither poor nor excellent, hence my rating of "3." It does not seem overly useful for self-study. One comical flaw on the front cover is the listing of the authors in English in an order that does not correspond to the listing in Arabic. ...

Thomas- Calculus 11th Edition

3 stars (the book not in good condition) - I expect more frpm the item, comparing with the written review by the seller. Price acceptable. 5 stars (One of the better university mathematics textbooks) - This textbook is by far one of those actually worth buying. I struggled through that awful, miserable excuse for a calculus text by Edwards and Penney, and was a little more impressed with Stewart and Anton. But I pulled out of my calculus courses and decided to get a bit more preparation in before taking them again. I started out with Calculus Made Easy by Silvanus P. Thompson and Martin Gardner, then went back to by old high school texts and made sure I understood everything. You don't need those huge, expensive Elementary and Intermediate Algebra texts; you can get away with Introductory Mathematics by Petocz, Petocz and Wood, published by Nelson/Thomson Learning (http://www.nelson.com.au). What you need to understand calculus is a good intuitive feel for algebra and to know *why*, not just *how*. There's a big difference. Once you've spent a couple of months sweating over your algebra, geometry and trigonometry texts, it's then time to reap the rewards and learn calculus. Thomas and Finney's Calculus and Analytic Geometry is extremely well written, with the right balance between applied mathematics for scientists and engineers and pure mathematics (proofs and stuff like that). If you're a math major, or intending to become a math major, then you'll want to use this book along with Apostol's Calculus and Spivak's Calculus. One thing I learned the hard way was that putting off mathematics has the effect of slamming the doors in your face. Interesting and useful university courses are out of reach, career options are out of reach, and you're left in the dark when it comes to science and technology. 5 stars (At last, a good intro to epi book for students!) - This book is an excellent introduction to epidemiology. The authors present epidemiologic concepts in an easy-to-understand manner with interesting supportive examples from the fields of reproductive health and HIV epidemiology. In addition to the standard chapters on study design, bias, and confounding, the book also includes very good chapters on measurement error, causation, and screening, as well as tried-and-proven guidelines for a critical review of epidemiologic studies. Mastering Public Speaking- Fifth Edition

1 stars (Disappointing) - I'd considered buying this book from Amazon, and decided to first examine a copy at the Boston Public Library. I was unimpressed. The tone seems aimed at middle-school students, and the text is littered with patronizing "Dick & Jane" anecdotes. A quick glance through the table of contents suggests that Grice and Skinner address nearly every conceivable aspect of public speaking -- but a closer examination reveals a complete lack of depth. It seems as if they simply brainstormed ways to add pages without actually investigating their subject. The most derelict example I found was the second chapter, devoted entirely to a discussion of ethics. This chapter includes a section on plagiarism, where Grice and Skinner define plagiarism and warn students that getting caught may result in failing a class or being expelled from school -- hardly the sort of information you'd expect from a college-level textbook. Meanwhile, Grice and Skinner lazily sidestep the most challenging issue -- the employment of speechwriters -- by confining its mention to a brief, rhetorical question among the chapter-end exercises. In other words: "Here's a complex issue. We've exhausted our space with rudimentary ones, but we encourage you to do some real work on your own!" There are some informative, useful books on public speaking. Richard Dowis and James Humes have each written excellent books on crafting and delivering a speech. Virgil Anderson and Ann Utterback have written valuable books on training your voice, and Livingston Taylor and Keith Johnstone have written classics on stage performance. My suggestion is to skip this book. I was thoroughly disappointed with its lack of ambition, and I'd hate to be stuck with a professor who found it respectable. ...

Tie Me Up- Tie Me Down

1 stars (Save your money - This is not Erotica) - Or at least it doesn't compare at all to what I've previously read. The first two stories are like any Harlequin short story. The handcuffs added a touch of humor to the stories and the abduction, if it can be called that, was pretty mild mannered. The biggest disappointment was the Jaid Black story. The first few chapters were good, the plot, the leading lady, but after the Hunter claimed his "rights" to marry, it turned into a disaster. The dialogue was crude and uninspired. It felt like being catapulted into a bad parody of an x-rated movie. Before trying to sell this anthology as Erotica, the publishers should have researched the subject by reading an Emma Holly book, or a Black Lace novel. 2 stars (Not Memorable) - I'd pass on this one if i were you. The stories were blah and the writing uninspired. I have enjoyed other Sherrilyn Kenyon books, and would recommend some of them. For really memorable erotic reading try one of these: 1) Bedtime Stories for Women by Nancy Madore, 2) Shameless by hanne Blank, 3) Big Guns by Sherrilyn Kenyon, 4) Sex Chronicles by Zane 2 stars (Very Disappointing) - The title is very attention grabbing.
