1 stars (Unstable) - I'm an undergraduate engineering student, which means I spend a lot of time 1) doing homework and 2) using my computer. During the times that those two activities coincide, I'm often writing a report or working with an Excel sheet. Before I picked up this version of Office, I had been using Office 2003 for over a year. Office 2003 crashed--a lot. Almost every time I'd use Word or Excel a crash would occur. As a result, I began to hit command-s after about every 25 keystrokes--obsessive, you might say. When I came back to school for the 2005-2006 year and upgraded to Office 2004, I had hopes that because the software was newer, it would somehow be more robust. In my opinion, it's really not. Sure, the interface is a bit cleaner and updated, but even though I'm running the most current versions of this sofware, it still doesn't work very well--crashes occur all too often. It's not the power software I had hoped it would be. As I've told my friends many times, I maintain that Microsoft produces crap for the Mac OS. You can disagree when you like, but I'll be switching to OpenOffice 2.0 when an OS X version is released. If you can get this for "free" (i.e., it's covered by tuition or something), go for it. It *IS* better than Office 2003, but not by much. 4 stars (not quite perfect) - I got the Office for Mac so as to allow me to transfer documents between machines. I would have to say that transferring data using a USB drive saves me a lot of time, although it is not entirely seamless. Some formats on Office Word 2003 are not quite the same on the Mac Office. Otherwise, Office for Mac allows me to continue using my Apple in a PC dominated workplace. It was a good investment. 4 stars (Great!) - First off, apple users seem to always have a biased view on anything that says "microsoft" on the box. Then they go off on a tangent on how terrible Microsoft is, they find one thing that they disliked in the program and find grounds to give... 5 stars (I hate to Admit it...) - MS Office is actually an excellent product. As a Mac person, I wish I could say that I preferred Apple's Work products, but they are not as fast as the Microsoft Office equivalents. 5 stars (Must have software) - I purchased the student and teacher edition 2003 of microsoft office for my son who is in his first year of high school. He uses this software everyday for homework, and is teaching his old mom a few new tricks as well - best $120 I've spent in a long while. 5 stars (good product, way better price) - Amazon's price was so much better than Dell's! And the package that comes with the student version of Windows has all the applications that an average person needs which is great. ... 4 stars ( Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003 ) - The price was the best I could find. Ordering was hassle free and delivery was fast. 5 stars (Comprehensively Useful) - There is no other product which compares to the Microsoft Office suite. "Microsoft Office Standard Edition" is the place to get started. And it is the place you'll probably stay. You do need Word and Excel, and occasionally, PowerPoint. Learn basic word processing and spreadsheet usage. Shine in meetings with PowerPoint. Do you need to upgrade from XP? Not likely. There are no new features I found impressive after having the XP version for years. It lacks Access, but most people don't need the database strength of it, and will survive nicely with just Excel. For e-mailing documents and files to coworkers, you can be confident they'll easily open Office files. There is a good chance they use it themselves. Outlook is one of those highly underrated, but enormously useful applications to help you organize your contacts, schedule and tasks easily. You can use it as an e-mail reader as well, though that feature has been vulnerable to viruses. Word is a huge program which can do far more than you'll need, but it will allow you versatility and simplicity that WordPerfect has yet to pull off. Excel is a basic spreadsheet with incredible math functionality. I don't need most of the math tools, other than minor budgets and such. I find it handy for tracking my poetry submissions; I can see which magazine I sent which piece to when, and how and when they replied. PowerPoint makes those cool slideshows with the text that can be animated on the screen. With the templates, you can look good without requiring a graphic design degree. I fully recommend "Microsoft Office Standard Edition." It is the business and home office standard. You need it, it is easy to learn, and the price is right. 1 stars (Don't even think about upgrading) - You need to get out more. Just the fact that you are looking at this page and are thinking of upgrading your Microsoft Office makes it clear that you have a problem. Don't believe the Microsoft advertisement featuring dinosaurs to announce "Microsoft Office Has Evolved." It hasn't. This is a mature product. It doesn't matter if you use Office 1997, 2000 or 2003. They are all the same. The good, the bad and the ugly. It is all still here. Maybe a few bugs have been fixed. Most haven't, and ther are always new bugs. If Microsoft took the time to really improve the software, that would be one thing. But they don't. Here is an example. You are in Outlook. You call up a contact and want to send that person a letter. You need to print an envelope, but there is no command to do so. There is no button to click. You can't right click anywhere to print an envelope. I am not making this up. Outlook has been out for almost ten years and multiple upgrades, and Microsoft still hasn't gotten around to implementing functionality to print a single envelope. Your only option (the on-line support confirms this) is to perform a mail merge. This is an elaborate process that is designed for printing thousands of envelopes for a bulk mailing. It involves opening multiple windows and setting all sorts of settings. You have to go through the ENTIRE PROCESS just to print a single envelope! What is more, the mail merge feature has bugs in it. It leaves blank lines in addresses that look atrocious, and it drops country names from addresses. It gives you options as to how you want country names treaed in addresses, but these all do nothing. Whatever option you select, Outlook leaves countries out of addresses when it prints envelopes. I could go on, but I won't. If you are using Office 2000 or even Office 1997, you aren't missing out on anything. There is absolutely no reason to shell out $400 for new software that does all the same things in all t... 5 stars (Quark to InDesign - Easy as 1-2-3) - I've been a QuarkXpress user since 1990 and I thought i would never find an equal. Well I have....it's called InDesign. With a Visual Quick Start book in my lap, I learned InDesign in a weekend and over the next 2 months, I designed a 54 page magazine using the program. And one of the best things about InDesign is how easy it is to produce PDF files, which is a real pain using Quark. Another plus is Adobe, a first-rate company. They let you try out any of their programs for a month. I did this with InDesign to see if my G4 running 10.28 could run the program and it did, with no problems. The new quark requires Tiger OS. I'm glad I made the switch, I'm never going back! 4 stars (More Features, Less Speed/Stability) - I've used both Photoshop and Illustrator for many years now, and I've been continually impressed by the new features in each version that have made my design work easier. CS2 does deliver with a number of enhancements in both tools and interface for both products. The good you can read in the press-release info above, and yes the new features are great. The unfortunate downside to CS2 is performance. If you do not have very good hardware, expect a performance decrease with CS2. For example my Quadro video card only has 64MB of memory, but Photoshop CS2 really needs 128MB or more to run smoothly. Without it, Photoshop will sometimes pause for a moment as it has to catch-up with your commands. Also expect 1GB of system memory as a real need, 2GB preferred. You can even run with up to 3GB in XP SP2 when the /3GB switch is set in the boot.ini, and PS will use it. Photoshop used to run pretty well with one HD, but it was preferred to have two physical drives to separate the windows paging file and Photoshop scratch disk, where data files could share some space with scratch disk on the second hard drive. Now for better performance, you need three separate hard drives: one for windows and applications...
