5 stars (Crisis Preparedness Handbook: A Complete Guide to Home Storage and Physical Survival) - Great book. I really don't see how one could be any better on this subject. The author has a very organized mind, has done his homework, and gives very specific recommendations that are practical and easy for anybody to follow. No wasted space or filler in this book. It's really a reference manual that you'll end up underlining and refering back to again and again. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (a great resource) - This is a great book for anyone interested in surviving any disaster. There is no telling what the future may hold, but this book is a good start in any survival library. 5 stars (One of the best out there.) - This book is well though out, organized in a simple and logical manner, and gives you plenty of information to design your own plan for a crisis of any kind. Unlike other books that just offer a bunch of check lists and "buy what I tell you" recommendation, this book allows you to make your own decisions of what you will and will not need to stock for a crisis. Additionally, much of this can be done on a budget, much of what you would need are your usual grocery items, in canned form. This is a huge savings over many of the dehyrated and freeze dried options normally presented in survival literature. Overall, if you are looking for a book to use as a basis for which to begin planning for a crisis, this is it. ...

4 stars (This book is an excellent learning tool!) - This book is a great textbook of emergency medicine, and I've chosen it over others simply because it's comprehensive without the useless drivel. Each section includes the necessary anatomy and pathophysiological considerations for the respective disoders. The subset of conditions are mentioned with just enough facts to understand the morbidity to treat it. The pictures, diagrams, algorithmic flow-charts, and drug regimens are a nice compliment, however, most of your clinical experience is going to come from interships and residency, so to assume this book is all you'll need to get by in EM is crazy. I still think it's the best out there to read before putting your mind to work. 2 stars (Downward Spiral on Autopilot) - *Emergency Medicine, A Comprehensive Study Guide* has long been a well-regarded standard emergency text, useful in day-to-day practice as well as for board preparation. This new edition has advanced the enlightened 'evidence-based recommendations' for changes in practice patterns, however, the lack of editorial control has resulted in a book packed with conflicting information. Each chapter is written by a different consultant, and unfortunately not all of them are up on this concept... we therefore get a series of conflicting statements when there is overlap in topics, and there is no attempt to reconcile this variability. Admittedly, opinions in much of medicine do vary; but outright conflict within a few pages in a standard text without discussion does harm to credibility. Further loss of editorial control is also evident on a close read. It is apparent that a spell-checker was used for proof-reading (substitutions of the nature of "week" for "weak" abound) and in some areas clinical formulae have been mis-stated -- example: calculation of effective osmolarity, pg. 1341 (though correct elsewhere in the book). 4 stars (Excellent Workbook) - I used this workbook in conjuction with the Emergency Care Book, to prepare for the state registry EMT-B test, and the NREMT-B test. This is a MUST have if you are using the Emergency Care Book. Questions are nearly identical in wording and phrasing to the NREMT-B exam, and the inclusion of practice homework problems add even more preparation oppertunities. DO NOT BUY THE EMERGENCY CARE BOOK, WITHOUT THIS WORKBOOK! 4 stars (Good, VERY good...) - I am a current EMT-B student and currently use this book as text. The book is indeed easy to read, and has a lot of features to help a student prepare for that dreadful exam. I reccomend buying the workbook as well, to really solidify the knowledge gained by reading. In my class the tests are easy in comparison to the questions in the workbook, this is why I recommend buying the workbook. Also, using all of the features incorporated in this book will, with out any doubt, prepare you for the test. The assessment chapters are mangled as the instructor's review says, but there is a great graphic in the front of the book and being how assessment is SO VITAL, one should visualize it on their own and practice till its like tieing a shoe. All in all a quality well thought out book, with tons of features. 5 stars (You think they are all the same....) - But they aren't. This was my required reading. I doubled up and purchased two others just in case. I found that I liked this one the best and just wasted my money on the other two. This book is very well organized and since all of the content to review for the NREMT is the same, that's what it is all about. Highly recommended. ...

While it's true not all writers are cranky, his reasoning here is fun to follow even if it is a little too brief at times. His 'Five Emergency Tools for Writing a Short Story' are interesting exercises that any writer can use to jump start a stalled writing session. A few of them seem slightly outlandish, but he does suggest modifying them in order to make them work for different writers. He gives examples of stories he created using these tools, but unfortunately, doesn't include even parts of the stories themselves as further illustration. ...
