5 stars (PC Relocator Works) - Although it did not work as quickly or effortlessly as I imagined, it is much faster and easier than any other method I've used. The included 2m transfer cable was not long enough for my installed set-up, but it worked fine with a USB extension cable. The better you prepare the old PC and the new PC, the better it works. I transferred from Win98SE to XPPro with very few issues after the move (some minor OS incompatibilities, easily resolved in XPPro). Do read everything before starting. I recommend this product without reservations to everyone. 5 stars (Great product!) - Very easy to use. Just followed the instructions and all of my data was relocated to my new computer. 1 stars (Program nightmare and customer service gulag) - I'm not a novice user and read the instructions carefully before proceeding to move to a new computer with Windows XP Pro and Office 03. I did not try to migrate programs, but only files. What a mess! The program must have moved registry settings (who asked it to?) and the new computer was so screwed up I thought I was going to have to reformat. Meanwhile, customer service was virtually non-existent. When things get screwed up, one needs help right away...not in 48 hours or more! Then I filed for a refund and they've been dragging their heels (and ignoring last few emails) on that front although I qualified and presented all pertinent paperwork. It's been nearly two months! Although I was willing to try and let them resolve issues as their sales hype had assured me, that promise proved to be more fiction and less reality. Absolutely unsatisfactory! RUN...RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN FROM THIS PROGRAM! I haven't posted reviews in the past, but this experience was so bad that I wanted to add my voice to the chorus of discontented buyers. And wish I had taken those negative reviews to heart before I purchased this particular program! ... 1 stars (Disappointing version of what was once great software) - Several years ago, I bought PC Relocator 4.0 when I acquired a new computer. Version 4.0 allowed you to pick and choose what programs and files you wanted to transfer. It took some time to set up both computers and to select the many files and programs I wanted to transfer, but once that was done the transfer went flawlessly. When I recently bought a new computer, the first thing I did was go to the store and buy the latest version, PC Relocator 6.0, remembering how well it worked the first time around. To my dismay, I found what James Honeycutt described in an earlier review. Instead of allowing you to pick and choose which software and files to move, you have to move everything. It's all or none. Since I planned to upgrade most of my software, I wanted to move just two or three programs to the new computer, and I wanted to move only about half of my documents. The rest was older stuff that I was going to delete. As Mr. Honeycutt described, in order to pick and choose the things you want to move, you have to buy the Ultra Control version. If you have already bought the regular version and you want to upgrade to Ultra Control, it will cost you an additional $39.95. In the end, I copied the files I wanted onto a couple CD's did not use PC Relocator at all. The reason I am giving this product only one star is that none of this is made clear on the box. When I bought PC Relocator years ago, there was only one version that did everything. When I purchased this version, I wasn't even aware that Alohabob was now offering two versions of PC Relocator: this stripped down version and the full version. Unlike other software products, there was no grid or other description on the back of the box showing what each version could or couldn't do. Most software with multiple versions will have a side-by-side comparison so that you can decide which one is right for you. PC Relocator does not have a side by side comp... 5 stars (Every Mac is an Island) - My gal Sara bought this because she's been a Mac person forever (I'm a former Window's person, who's made the switch) and has been used to using ResEdit to design her own icons under System 7 through 9. So now she's at it again, changing, rearranging and creating icons and I have to say, it's infectious. Who says the boys in Cupertino have to have the last say on what your desktop is going to look like. Want Microsoft Word to appear as a devil on the screen. You got it. You also get a thousand free icons with the program to start. Good ones. Macs have always been unique, now they are more so. Thumbs up from me for CandyBar Plus. 4 stars (Hours of FUN!) - The only problem I am finding with system mechanic 5 is that it can take many hours to do a system maintenance. I have been using the SM software since about 97 or 98... I have always loved that it really does well with keeping your system running top notch. I have NEVER had a major problem with it, but the last system maintenance I did on my 250Gb SATA (only about 20 being used) hard drive, it took 24 hours to complete... And let me warn you now! If you stop SM in the middle of a task just because you couldn't wait.... GET READY for problems... You have to let it complete. I crashed about 8 times last night because I had to stop it to use my PC... Well, now that it has run completely over night.... I can type this without any trouble ;)... I do recommend this software; they always have problems in the beginning, but thanks to updates.... They have all been fixed in the past. 5 stars (SYSMECHANIC5 PROFESSIONAL IS EXCELLENT) - My experience with Symantec Norton Works was very good until I had problems with cleaning my drives of all the duplicates and clutter left by use of the Internet. I evaluated System Mechanic5 Professional and I liked very much. Moreover,Ron Slater - Sales Representative - contacted me with several tips that put me at ease to decide on purchasing it. I am happy with the features and the user-friendly format of the software. 4 stars (Maybe they fixed the problems???) - I just installed this program a few days ago after trying the trial version first. So far, I have had no real problems. I did defrag my entire system using the optimize option. I have 4 drives partitions on two drives totaling 160GB with about 80GB of data on them (SATA 120GB drive with three partitions and a single partitioned EIDE 40GB drive). I set it to start then went to bed. Six hours later, it was complete and there were no problems (I don't know how long the process actually took, but it was done 6 hours later). 3 stars (Review for the Alaska Apple Users Group) - Utility maker, Micromat, has moved from the Mac into the bigger world of Apple hardware with their iPod utility, PodLock. While it's not alone in the arena, PodLock performs a few functions that you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. While PodLock lets you peruse the entire contents of your iPod (including songs, pictures, and recordings), it's main purpose is to provide users with the ability to backup, optimize, and secure data stored on your iPod. The interface resembles a 3G iPod. The pseudo-iPod's screen shows the technical details of any connected iPod while all the program's functions are immediately available through one-touch buttons buttons. While this interface metaphor is simple and familiar, it isn't standard, so some elements don't look very good, particularly drawers. Those drawers are used to display three categories of iPod content - music, pictures, and audio recordings. Each drawer displays a list of the associated files. Details can be displayed on any file and, best of all, music can be played and pictures can be viewed directly off the iPod! That means you can sample music from someone else's iPod. The real power feature of the program, however, is the ability to create an invisible partition on your iPod for storing data if you have at least 500MB free. After determining the size of the partition you can lock access with a password and even use Apple's FileVault encryption to further secure the contents. This provides a comforting alternative to the simpler iPod disk mode option offered in iTunes. But wait, that's not all! PodLock has one more feature to add to your piece of mind. With a single click you can save a backup of all the data on your iPod. That means that after the loss or accidental reformatting of your iPod, an equally simple restore function will bring all of the contents back. As an added bonus, you can use PodLock to analyze and then defrag your iPod's drive, improving... 3 stars (Slow defrag and Registry Cleanup is buggy) - Don't bother using "speed up hard drives" on the "Optimize" tab...the defrag routine will literally run forever. Also, be aware that "Clean Registry" in the "PC Maintenance Wizard" does not do anything except identify deletable items...it does not remove them. In fact, the Wizard reports "None found" even though when running, it clearly identifies deletable items. If you want System Mechanic to actually remove old registry items, you have to run the routine separately from the "Fix" tab using "Fix Registry Problems". I reported this flaw to Iolo around the first of 2005 and they acknowledged the problem but have not released any fix (how ironic!). Overall, System Mechanic is Ok but the interminable defrag and goofy registry cleaner are real downers. 2 stars (Alright Software) - The only thing that saves this product is it's registry cleaner. If you need a firewall or spyware remover don't bother with these, try Webroot's Spyswepper or Norton's or McAfee's firewall. 1 stars (A DISASTER! If you must go iolo, stick with SM 4...) - "This product is full of pitfalls." I have this on very good authority (my service technicians), although I personally haven't found but ONE, I guess, since the attempted installation corrupted my hard drive to the degree that even Safe Mode was unavailable. I really liked SM 4.0 Pro but, after this nightmare (and the subsequent lack of any help whatever from iolo), I urge you to stay away from 5.0. BTW, there are no refunds under ANY circumstances so, if your pc crashes (to the tune of $150 in my case) you'll also be out the cost of the program. ... iolo technologies :: Memory Management :: Hardware :: File Compression (Decompression) :: File Conversion (Convert) :: Diagnostics (Diagnostic) :: Maintenance :: Back up (Backup Backi :: System Mechanic 5
5 stars (diskeeper 9) - this is an excellent program for keeping HD neat and clean. windows has a defrangment program built in but after using diskeeper 9 i wont use windows verson again. as a test i defragmented my HD using windows then used diskeeper 9 to see how well windows did ...............no comparison. diskeeper found defragments all over my HD. i love the "set it and forget it" on diskeeper. i use the screensaver set up,. so when ever my PC is running and my screen saver comes up, diskeeper goes into action and defragments the HD, which keeps my PC running fast. speaking of fast i also noticed the diskeeper ran faster then windows for defragmenting. windows has been known to take up to 2 hours + for defragmenting. diskeeper took less then 30 mins the first time running, now it takes 1-5 mins if that due to the set up i choose. mind you i am not a PC expert but i can find my way around a PC pretty well. so i am HIGHLY recommending diskeeper 9. 5 stars (Great product) - I purchased Diskeeper 9 after using version 7 for a few years. Version 9 is a big improvement. It keeps my files in order, and does it a lot faster. Great product it does a much better job than the windows version. 3 stars (getting better) - I have yet to see executive's defragger outperform O&O Defragger software or Raxco's Perfectdisk. If I were to place these 3 programs, it would be: 1st place - O&O Defrag V8.0 2nd place - Raxco perfect disk V7.0 3rd - Winternal's defragger utility/ Executive's "diskkeeper" O&O is like THE defragger to use. A real, true "swiss army knife" of defragger's. Choose "HOW" you defrag a system, based upon how it is used. You have like 6 ways to defrag, based upon how YOU want it done. [Example: workstation, file server, database server, etc] All of the above mentioned companies offer DEMOs of their programs. Do yourself a favor and "test-drive" each product BEFORE you buy. ... 5 stars (Excellent Tool: A must-have) - This is an excellent piece of software, and I recommend it for everyone. This tool is as valuable to me as Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. I'm a computer professional and as soon as most people find out, their first response is, "Oh my god you need to look at my computer it's SO SLOW. You need to look at it." My typical regiment is: 1) Download, Install, and Run Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 2) Scan for viruses using McAfee's free online scan (Always up-to-date, despite what may be installed) 3) Run through the registry's run and startup folder to stop unnecessary programs from starting on load 4) Download, Install, Schedule, and Run Diskeeper. People are amazed at how much faster thier computer runs. In fact, after a fresh install I also run Diskeeper just to squeeze every drop of performance out of the PC as possible. Two important things to note: - Why is defragmenting important? - Why not use the built-in defragmenter? Answers: Let's say you're writing a document in MS Word. You save the document and close it. Then you begin to write another word document. When you save the second document to disk, windows will likely put the new file immediately after the old file. Well, what happens when you add new stuff to the first file if the second file took up the space the first file had left immediately after it? Well it saves the new changes in the space AFTER the second file, hence creating a fragmented file. A fragmented file is a file the is not contiguous, and has segments in different physical locations on the hard disk. Picture a fragmented file as a file with other files inside of it, breaking it apart. If you research hard disk statistics, you'll see 2 common factors in rating hard disk performance: Seek time and transfer speed. Transfer speed is the MAXIMUM speed in which your hard disk can transfer the information over a wire from the disk itself to the computer, after the data is located. Seek time is the average amount of t... 1 stars (Norton Utilities sucks) - Do not buy this program. I bought this program for my boyfriend for christmas. Its not good at defragging (he had to do it twice in 2 weeks so far), and the disc utility can be harmful or even fatal to a mac computer. When we found this out it was removed right away. Also Norton is discontinuing the product and concentrating on making virus protection. Why is this being discontinued if its supposedly a good product? i promise if you get this program you will regret it. 1 stars (Symantec itself has discontinued this program.) - Symantec (the makers of Norton Utilities) has discontinued this program so there will be no future development. Stay away from this faulty program and buy something better, such as Disk Warrior or Tech Tools. 1 stars (Problems) - I ran this software and it crashed my hard drive and deleted half of the data on my computer! It was a nightmare. All Mac users are now recommending Disk Warrier due to having the exact same problem as I did with Norton Utilities. Avoid! ...
