Psychology- Principles in Practice

1 stars (I'm not an idiot, thankyouverymuch. ) - I was just assigned this book for my psychology class and managed to read/skim through it. Maybe I'm just angry because I had the opportunity to take a college-level class in cognitive theory over the summer and was thus exposed to much more interesting reading material, but this book is a real piece of work... even compared to most high school textbooks I've had. For starters, the pictures are much larger than the words. As much as a good illustration can help one grasp a difficult concept, the ones in this book show pretty much NOTHING. Then, there's the whole tone of the material, which really aggrivates me. It seems very condescending, with words like "placebo" that almost any high school senior would know phoneticized (pluh-SEE-boh). In additoin, it appears as though more effort has been placed towards catering to special lobby groups than towards creating a memorable book that will sucessfully teach psychology and impart a love for the field. "Race relations" are referred to a lot, as are "animal rights." As liberal as I am (anti-war, quasi-socialist, for legal recognition of gay unions, pro-environmentalist to a certain degree), I really get irked when these petty, almost-nonissues that (stupidly) took up much of the Left's focus twenty years ago are brought back to life in the form of instructional materials. They water down the actual material to a point where it almost becomes propoganda. In an effort to make the text "non-biased," it has in effect become MORE biased... just in the "right" direction. If you are a teacher and reading this, please do me (and pretty much every other student out there) a favor and DO NOT use this textbook in your classroom. I don't know if there are other books that do the same thing better or what your options are, but I would certainly not recommend this one. Perhaps you could let your students read some actual research journals or college textbooks; if you give them the ben...

1 stars (Honest Reviews?) - Were all the reviews written by the author? Give me a break! The fact that every review sounds the same will keep me from ever purchasing this book. In that case, I guess all the reviews helped! 5 stars (THE Book on Courtyards.) - Courtyards is a terrific book, the result of 20+ years of loving research. Oregon Professor John Reynolds is crazy for courtyards and it certainly shows. A courtyard is a space surrounded by a building, often surrounded by a house. There are all manner of courtyards, large, small, huge, quiet, loud. Some are open and others are terribly private. But all good courtyards have things in common. In the landscapes most of us in the US are used to, we have a house and the gardens are on the outside and we see them before we see the house. In a sense these landscapes serve mostly as dressing to enhance the outward look of the house. But a fine courtyard garden is different. It is smack in the middle of the house and the house surrounds it. It is not wide open to the world, but instead is a place to get away from it all, a place to be outside, but not to be out in the open. The best courtyards are open to the sky, have water, vines, a multitude of interesting flowers, trees, potted plants. A large number of the very finest courtyard plants are discussed in detail in this excellent book. I was struck by how interesting the numerous photos and designs were. Profusely illustrated, each one serves a definitive purpose. I was struck too, by how many different things go into the making of a well thought out courtyard. What is involved so that it will be warm in the winter and cool in the hot summer. What is involved so that it becomes a place where people want to be. I took many notes as I read this large book and some day I plan to build a house of my own design, and in the middle of it, I'm going to have a courtyard. 5 stars (A top pick for any interested in the fine art of surfing) - Matt Warshaw's Encyclopedia Of Surfing is a top pick for any interested in the fine art of surfing. From different surfboard developments and the history of different cultures involved in the surfside sport, to legendary surfers and their achievements, the Encyclopedia Of Surfing is packed from cover to cover with "user friendly" A-Z reference material. 5 stars (Like Surfers Journal... almost) - I surf almost every day and can never seem to quench my thirst. My favorite read, by far, of all books and periodicals is The Surfers Journal. It truly captures the many angles of the sport. This book is somewhat in the same vein. It's exhaustive, comprehensive and true to the roots. If you love the history of the sport buy it. If you read Surfing, have never ridden more than one type of board or never traveled to pursue a new wave... don't (do those things instead... THEN buy it). Good bedside book... alongside my Bible. 2 stars (Really IS and Encyclopedia) - For the record, let me state that I've been surfing for 20 years and got the bug, along with most others my age, watching The Endless Summer and getting captivated by the energy and beauty of the sport. This compilation, while very complete, really IS an encyclopedia...page, after page, after page. There are some useful tidbits of information strewn among the lengthy volume but a large majority of the book seems filled with fairly uninteresting, small, black and white photos, and biographies of just about anyone in the world who ever attempted to stand up on a board. Avoid this snore-fest and put your money into a nice hardcover coffee table book filled with glorious color shots of the world's tube riders...and leave all of the trivia to the wannabes. ...
