1 stars (Who is the audience for this book?) - This is the first review I have been moved to write ... I bought this book because I like to read other people's perspectives on Physics; particularly when they are as smart as Roger Penrose undoutedly is. I have a PhD in theoretical physics (QFT) so I am hardly uneducated, or uninterested, in these topics. I found that this book tried to jump straight to an elegant mathermatical explanation without trying to impart any of the physical understanding. If you don't already know this material, this book won't help. At several points I just laughed out loud; one in particular when after explaining some arcane point in complex algebra involving a fraction, Penrose adds a comment along the lines of "I explained what a fraction was at the start of the book". He seems to be under the total delusion that you can just present the results of 20yrs of education in as many pages and people will just pick it up. I can only conclude that he is so familiar with this material that he has completely lost touch with its difficulty. The same must be said for those reviewers who liked this book; or else they are just lying to make themselves feel good; or perhaps they don't understand as much as they think they do! 5 stars (Shining brilliance!) - Penrose's book is really a thrilling experience. His intuition is brilliant. His explanations are crisp. His teaching ability can be probably only matched by Feynman. I got the book yesterday, but couldn't stop reading it so far. The first 150 pages I've read gave me a completely new perspective on complex calculus, which I had studied in undergraduate and thought I understood it. I am looking forward to other sections on differential geometry and other advanced topics. The book is very appropriate for people who have taken/are taking math courses but don't have good intuitive feel for the subjects covered---most math courses (especially, the grad ones) only emphasize the mathematics not the in... 5 stars (Good Drawings, Modernized Text) - I first went and looked at the Kama Sutra in the free on-line version at books-on-line.com. The price was certainly right. But it was the original, ancient text, and somewhat hard to follow. Damn good reading, but sometimes hard to imagine just what they were talking about. Now comes this edition, very reasonably priced which takes the positions and illustrates them with drawings. It's a lot easier to understand. I guess that I'm just a bit too simple minded. A lot of these look pretty interesting, but some of them (Face-to-Face Fandango, page 65) looks like it would hurt. The book is put out by Cosmopolitan, so it's oriented to the female side. Each position has a 'Why You'll Love It.' A little bit of 'Why He'll Love It' wouldn't hurt. After all this is a two person sport. 4 stars (The Cosmo Kama Sutra) - The pictures are great and it is really fun. Some of the poses I found were some we had just done naturally. All in all I recommend the book. 4 stars (Cosmo always good!!) - Great book!! This book put back the blazing fire in my relationship. 4 stars (Microhistory of the masses) - Borne of the microhistory genre, "The Cheese and the Worms" provides a glimpse into the life of a miller in medieval Italy. No ordinary miller is 'Menocchio', however, as he is inquisitioned for his radical religious philosophies. In a time and place where Catholicism was undoubtedly the religion of Europe, Menocchio harbored unique ideas about religious doctrine, the teachings of the Catholic Church, and man's purpose. Although some of his many ideas contradict others that he had, he was well-read and surprisingly well-educated for a man of his station. As Ginzburg says, though, we must look to the Protestant Reformation and the invention of the printing press as being major catalysts for such learning and religious evolution. Within the microhistory genre, "The Cheese and the Worms" is most fascinating when we ask the question: Was this an isolated phenonmenon or was this a reflection of many people's views? The answer, I suppose, lies with Menocchio, but there is still much to be gleaned from this book. 5 stars (Well written, fascinating tale) - Description of a miller with an intresting ('modern') cosmological belief whose rebellion in thought is prosecuted by the Taliban of that time, the Roman Catholic Church. Forced to explain his nonAristotelian views (and, if Ginzburg is telling the truth, he responded extremely well to the inquisitors' questions!), the miller outwits his arrogant, narrow-minded judges and so wins the reward of torture and imprisonment, losing his wife, family, everything in the end. Galileo, who had a higher social position and powerful protectors, suffered no worse than house arrest, in comparison. 5 stars (Keep this book in mind) - Anytime you want to tell yourself that the Catholic Church isn't that bad, just keep this book in mind. It is just more proof that the church is the most corrupt institution in the history of time. . .with that in mind. The book is very interesting, it deals with th... 1 stars (Elevation of the ego to a new level) - The proponents of this Intelligent Design worldview based book and some reviewers here see this book as a breath of fresh air to put purpose back into a directionless, material based culture. The first premise that evolution,Copernicus and science has taken away our purpose in life is not valid to me. Science has only enhanced our understanding of life and it's task is not to provide a purpose in our lives because like religion that is a subjective experience. Science explains how things work and does not presume to answer why we are here. I think that the philosophy of this book and other ID dogma does the opposite of restoring a purposeful based view of life. It only adds to the self-absorbed pathological sickness that infests many individuals in the American culture...the sense of being special, divinely ordained to be the center of the world and a gross sense of entitlement. Everything then was created just for us. Believers are superior to athesist and agnostics,Christians are superior to non-Christians, Americans are superior to other cultures and now the ego even goes out further... the earth was designed and placed so humans(specifically Judeo-Christians) could appear, evolve and be the priviledged observers of the cosmos and discover the creator. That is obscene, absurd and ludicrous to propose such a thing in a universe with literally billions of galaxies and 15 billion light years across. In the midst of all that space, how likely is it that the lifeforms on one tiny orbital body would have the "truth" nailed down in their corner. Is it some grand purpose that stellar objects go super-nova and explode perhaps wiping out billions of life forms that may be in the vicinity. Or how about that some galaxies are on crash courses that will cause future destruction. Is it purposeful that the sun will one day go cold and all life on this planet will cease to exist. Or what about asteroids that have and ma...
