Calculus Single Variable 5th Edition with CD-ROM

1 stars (Crap) - I have used this book for 2 semesters and all i have to say is that it sucks. the author skips steps and does a bad job of explaining nearly 75 percent of the book. i personally believe that he should know better, because alot of people dont have a good background in math, including myself, therefore alot of clear explanation is needed. this means that skipping steps and explaining concepts breifly doesnt cut it. therefore anyone who buys this book, should make sure he/she has many ways in tackling calculus, instead of just using the book, which is a waste even if its a penny. this means get the solution manual, pair up with someone, and etc. 4 stars (For what its worth, this is a good Calculus textbook) - This book covers the first twelve chapters of the full edition of Calculus by Stewart. I would actually recommend buying that book instead of this one if you are planning on taking up to Calc. 3 because they are similar in price but the full version includes Calc 1, 2, and 3 material. Anyway, I used this text for both Calculus 1 and 2 in college. The first six chapters cover the course material for Calculus 1: Introductory Analytical Geometry, Limits, Derivatives, Applications of Derivatives, Integrals, and Applications of Intergrals. Chapters 7-12 covers course material normal for Calculus 2: Inverse functions/Derivatives and integrals of exponential and logarithmic functions, Techniques of Integrations, Applications of Integration to Physics/Engineering, Differiential Equations (which we didn't cover), Parametric Equations/Polar Coordinates, and Series. For some reason chapter seven includes different verisons of certain sections but they are basically the same anyway. Unlike other reviewers, I think that this book was very helpful. It is possible to learn the material if you put a lot of effort into it, which you need to do if you really want to learn Calculus. I can see why reviewers would find this book difficult to use though. Tru...

Calculus and Its Applications- 10th Edition

4 stars (Best for basics) - This is an excellent place to start - if you just started calculus, or need a thorough back-to-basics guide. Concepts are explained patiently and excellently unlike many others that cover the same basic concepts but rush through the 'why's and simply throw formulae at you. On the other hand, the book is kind of verbose and a slow starter. It may not be right if you are looking for a quick tour of the basics. But if you are willing to invest a little more time, it's well worth it. For me, the practical illustrations alongside each concept, were a big incentive and don't make you feel like you are just plowing through a math textbook. 4 stars (Good Text for Basic Calculus Concepts) - Contrary to what some other reviewer have claimed, I found this book quite helpful. It provides the basic concepts of Calculus such as limits and derivative rules and applications, exponents and logarithms, integrals, double variable calculus, trig functions, techniques of integrations, an introduction to differential equations, and even series. I found this book very easy to use. It presents the information in a very terse, straightforward manner. Basically, it cuts down on the mathematical theory and allows students to solve the important equations quick and easy. Instead of being lost in complicated definations of derivations, I was able to quickly find derivations and discover their uses in functions. This is the book that I used for my "Calculus for Social and Natural Science Majors" course. Personally, I feel that I learned much from this book. I never took a Calculus class in high school and wasn't the most mathematically inclinded so i was sure that Calculus was going to be tough. This book made it really easy to understand and somehow Calculus turned into one of my easiest classes. This book, however, is not for those who plan on taking higher level Calculus classes. It has most of the fundamentals, but not more advanced topics. Also, sever...

Precalculus 7th Edition

5 stars (Good book. Especially With Solution Manual.) - Bought the teachers edition and 2 solution manual books (1500+pages each) all for 63 bucks. BRAND NEW! Anyways, this book I find to be a lot better than many many of the other math text books out there. What is nice about this book is the simple fact that it doesn't try as hard to fool you as the others. Other text books seem to be written by people that are really advanced and think, in a way, that we are as well. They sometimes don't realize that the stuff they put down into text books might be a lot harder to someone that doesn't have a firm gasp and understanding as they have. I mean...don't you hate text books that give you examples and solutions, but all of the examples are of easy problems and the ones that you do want to know are not shown? In highschool, I didn't know weither to use my math text books to learn or use it as heating fuel for the winter nights. Listening to the teacher wasn't very helpful because he followed the pace of his more advance nerdy students and using the book to catch up helped as much as little if nothing. This book, however, can actually teach you pretty much everything step by step, especially if you use it with the solutions manual which shows you step by step how the answers are achieved. For once, I'm learning more from the book than from the teacher. They should hire the book, it would be cheaper. I'm sure the book will grade us by a curve as well and be nicer to us. This whole summer semester I've been learning almost everything from the book, the teacher is just extra. The way the book is made, its an accumalative (spelled wrongly I bet) kind of thing. You can learn it all if you go through it from a to z, beginnig to end. Of course you'll still need guidance here and there, but it is made so clearly that it gives you a peace of mind. Suddenly, the secret codes are being decoded. A pretty looking book that'll probably cost you a bundle (USED in textbook store fo...

Thomas- Calculus 11th Edition

3 stars (the book not in good condition) - I expect more frpm the item, comparing with the written review by the seller. Price acceptable. 5 stars (One of the better university mathematics textbooks) - This textbook is by far one of those actually worth buying. I struggled through that awful, miserable excuse for a calculus text by Edwards and Penney, and was a little more impressed with Stewart and Anton. But I pulled out of my calculus courses and decided to get a bit more preparation in before taking them again. I started out with Calculus Made Easy by Silvanus P. Thompson and Martin Gardner, then went back to by old high school texts and made sure I understood everything. You don't need those huge, expensive Elementary and Intermediate Algebra texts; you can get away with Introductory Mathematics by Petocz, Petocz and Wood, published by Nelson/Thomson Learning (http://www.nelson.com.au). What you need to understand calculus is a good intuitive feel for algebra and to know *why*, not just *how*. There's a big difference. Once you've spent a couple of months sweating over your algebra, geometry and trigonometry texts, it's then time to reap the rewards and learn calculus. Thomas and Finney's Calculus and Analytic Geometry is extremely well written, with the right balance between applied mathematics for scientists and engineers and pure mathematics (proofs and stuff like that). If you're a math major, or intending to become a math major, then you'll want to use this book along with Apostol's Calculus and Spivak's Calculus. One thing I learned the hard way was that putting off mathematics has the effect of slamming the doors in your face. Interesting and useful university courses are out of reach, career options are out of reach, and you're left in the dark when it comes to science and technology. The good news is that with a bit of hard work it will all suddenly fall in place. Mathematics is the foundation of all science and technology, and, of course,...

Precalculus Sixth Edition

5 stars (A gem. But beware of Amazon bugs!) - I reported them to Amazon months ago - nothing's changed. There are two different books on amazon.com: BOOK 1: "Precalculus 5/e" by Larson & Hostetler (search for 0618052852 on amazon.com). It has a very good supplement - "Study and Solutions Guide" by Dianna Zook (0618072713). Both books were published by Houghton Mifflin Company, which has nice resource site http://college.hmco.com/mathematics/students/. I have no affiliation with this publisher. From the pull-down "Precalculus" window Select Title "Precalculus 5/e Larson/Hostetler ((c)2001)". You'll be very pleased with the links you find there. If you seriously want to ace Precalculus - get both - "Precalculus" and "Study...". BOOK 2: "Precalculus Functions and Graphs: A Graphing Approach/Precalculus With Limits: A Graphing Approach (Student Study Guide)" by Larson (0618074104). Here's one bug: Somehow reviews posted for BOOK 1 got mirrored onto BOOK 2 or vice versa (compare books' reviews). Another bug: Book 2 in reality has a title "Study and Solution Guide" and its authors are Bruce Edwards and Dianna Zook (not Larson). Compare it with "Study and Solutions Guide for Precalculus Functions and Graphs : A Graphing Approach and: Precalculus With Limits : A Graphing Approach" (0669417297), which is older: 2/e, (c)1997. Book 2 gives solutions to odd-numbered excersizes and to all Chapter Practice Tests and to Chapter and Cumulative Tests in both "Precalculus Functions and Graphs...3/e" (0618052909) and "Precalculus with Limits...3/e" (0618052917). Those two books were published in 2001 by Houghton Mifflin Company. On http://college.hmco.com/mathematics/students/ from the pull-down "Precalculus" window select either of their titles. Click on "Purchase this Product or Study Aides" and you'll see the whole learning package which includes aforementioned "Study and Solution Guide" ISBN: (0-618-07410-4) (for some reason Bruce Edwards is dropped and only Dianna Zoo...

College Algebra 9th Edition

1 stars (Now I'm scared! ) - I'm getting ready to take Intermediate Algebra using a text by this author. I will be required to take College Algebra next term and am hoping, after reading your reviews, that this is NOT the book that will be required for the class. Did anyone get value from "math help" websites? Thanks! 1 stars (I think I know why they use this book) - After reading the previous reviews for this book, I realized one question kept surfacing. Why? Why did my instructor choose this book? A very likely answer is this book could have been chosen based on the margin of profit the school bookstore makes off of it. I don't know this for certain, but I have encountered similiar problems with texts chosen when I was in college. A useless, high-priced text book was often a sign of a greedy college bookstore. I would tend to suspect this when we were required to spend quite a bit for inferior texts--esp. ones that changed editions often (requiring you to buy the 'newest' book). The instructor may have had little to do with the choice. I don't have much to say about this particular book, but when in this type of situation there are a few steps you can take. Attend every class and take good notes. If you notice most of the other students don't understand a particular concept, go to the instructor and ask that the lesson be repeated. Use the book only to work the assigned problems- use your notes for the methods. Hope this helps! 1 stars (College Algebra, 9th edition, by Lial) - I just got done with taking my final in College Algebra using this textbook. I was extremely frustrated and stressed during the whole course because I just couldn't get it! This book did not explain enough and just quickly glossed over or assumed that you knew the info already. Definitely not written for students, but for professors already gifted in algebra!! Needless to say, I struggled through this whole course. I had to buy three other algebra books just to understand what t...

Calculus- Early Transcendentals with CD-ROM

1 stars (Complaint) - It has been nearly a month and I still haven't received the book yet. Could you please review the order and return my money? Thanks. 1 stars (Who is this book written for?) - This book does not seem to be written for students! This book seems like an "Oh-Ho, look at how smart I am, let me see if I can confuse Mathematics Doctorates everywhere! Students, ha! I will impress all of my colleagues with this little gem!" Granted that reading math is not the easiest thing to do, but this is not an amiable book for students, I would be more inclined to be taught with a Schaum's Outline than this! This seems to be a trend with mathematics and science text books though. Only written to impress others in the field with little care for someone trying to actually LEARN the material. Thank you for your time. 1 stars (Poor excuse for a math book) - Maybe I was just spoiled in high school with good math books (such as Triola's Statistics book and Sullivan's Precalc text). This book has too many faults to recommend. The only plus to this book is the movies on the green CD-ROM. However, they only explain the most basic of problems and can be worthless when doing the exercises in the book. A red CD-ROM was also included and seems to be useless. An example--chapter two is very poorly done. I've had to resort to other sources to understand limits. There is too much emphasis on physics and not enough on math itself in section 2.1. The example problems in the book are hard to understand. It's a good thing I have a great professor. They seem to be verbose and the book reminds me more of Deitel's awful programming books than of a math text. The practice problems are a joke since the book doesn't really say how to do 70% of them. Color would be great for visual learners who like to take the step by step approach (rarely practiced here; quite a few steps get skipped) and prefer not to read it in paragraph form. Honestly, what kind of math book is written like...

Calculus with CD-ROM

2 stars (Postively Dreadful) - Like many reviewers here, I purchased James Stewart's Calculus: Single Variable Early Transcendentals for two semesters of junior calculus. The book is hefty and expensive, close to $150, yet I when I finished junior calculus, I felt distinctly ripped off. I was further surprised to learn that this particular textbook was one of the most widely used in colleges throughout North America. How could a thoroughly inferior textbook become so popular? I asked myself. The problem, as I see it, is that James Stewart attempted two different approaches for this text, and failed miserably at both. On one hand, he presents the material in a mathematically rigorous fashion. On the other, he tries to present it in an intuitive way, so that students getting their first taste of calculus can better understand the material. Essentially, Stewart tries to satisfy both the professor and the student, but ends up pleasing neither. Mathematical proofs, for examples, are presented in ultra-condensed form, and are unlikely to please anyone looking for mathematical rigor. More worrisome, however, is the poor mathematical exposition for the unfortunate student. Most maddeningly in his examples, Stewart has a habit of omitting several key steps of algebraic manipulation, leaving the student to throw up their arms at how Stewart arrived at the answer. As many college freshmen will have little to no experience with calculus, I feel it is critical that the author show exactly how a particular problem is to be solved, with no steps omitted. Ironically for a calculus textbook, the section on the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus is one of the most shoddily presented in the whole book, giving little explanation as to how and why the concepts of integration and differentiation are related. To make matters worse, the tone of book itself is consistently dry, lifeless, and slightly condescending with the constant use of "we" and "let's" throughout. In short, Stewart does n...
