FlatOut

4 stars (Flatout, a car guy's must have.) - So, you loved the original Driver game for PC? Sad that Driver2 didn't get to PC and still haven't mastered Driv3r or left it sitting in the box to figure out later? Then FlatOut is the game for you. This game may not be a realistic racing simulator, may not have the best GUI for menus (can be managed with wheel and keyboard use. But for fun, this game has what you need. This game is great after those long commutes, just load it up, start a race, turn around and crash headlong into everything in sight, thinking it was that guy that was tailgating you, or that dead ass that wouldn't get out of the way. SMASH, CRASH, or get the cheat for the ejector seat and have fun throwing the dummy for distance or altitude records. Then you can mess around with different cars getting a reasonable idea about tight, loose, and all those other NASCAR like descriptions that the cars all get at times. There all there in one form or another. In all, great fun, and certainly worth the money. 4 stars ( FlatOut Fun) - This game is great fun. Great graphics, cool sound tracks are just the beginning. If your looking for a new racing title, this maybe the one. Realistic damage to cars and a destructable enviroment can add up to hours of pure racing mayhem fun. FlatOut is flat out fun. 1 stars (Flatout is flat) - This game has some good qualities, but the pure racing person will have issues, as you gain $ for running into objects and cars, which blows. You are in a race and losing, so blast your car and everyone around you to get $$ for the next race. Realistic? Not. They don't even have a view from inside the car, it is a bumper view with no part of the car visible. The interface with arrow buttons is bad, and you can't even race online, just by LAN. In short, stick with Leadfoot or DTRSC and you will be at least $40 better off. jc ...

TrackMania- Sunrise

5 stars (Original Track Mania meets PS2 drivability) - Excellent game, from the progression through levels to the track editor, the game is near perfect. My only complaint is the third type of vehicle is very undesirable, I've gone on line to race other people's tracks and no one is even using the third type. But the on line driving experience is even better with official rankings and the custom paint shop allows you to easily and endlessly customize your vehicle (Leopard skin my first choice). The speed and control are beyond impressive. Track Mania Sunrise is the perfect racing game with the ability to create the perfect track. The stunts and aerial effects are amazing with awesome camera effects during the jumps. Maybe next year they'll allow contact and collisions with on line racing. I'm not easily impressed and I own a dozen driving games including GT3, WRC, Test Drive, Need for Speed, and Midnight Club. Track Mania tops them all. 4 stars (trackmania) - I just bought this game last night after being a big fan of the first game and this version is much improved. The graphics are probably the most obvious difference from the previous game and the driving surfaces are more varied and detailed. The driving physics also are more responsive than the first and each type of car really handles in a unique way.It was a great game before and it looks to be even greater this time out. 5 stars (The Game Rules !!) - If this isn't the best racing game for the PC it is right up their with the best. Give it a try. Plenty of tracks and cars which can be downloaded on certain fan sites. ...

Need For Speed- Underground 2

5 stars (Need For Speed Underground 2) - Need For Speed Underground 2 is a game where you drive and compete with advance racers. Based on the sequal of the first Underground game, the storyline was O.K. All it talks about is you trying to be the best racer and to earn reputation so people out the can give you respect in the streets of underground. Major changes in the underground 2 made this game a bit better than the first need for speed undergound game. First of all underground 2 made maps and a free roam/explore place for you to roam around the streets of underground to to compete some drivers around. More cars now available to drive and customize. graphics from this game make me think thats its a little better than the first underground game. I rate this game a 4 out of 5 Some technical features of this game from the need for speed website: Key Features - Free-Roaming City: Explore a massive city divided into five distinct, interconnected neighborhoods, ranging from serpentine suburban hills to an intense downtown grid. A complex series of drivable freeways connect the neighborhoods together. - Emergent Gameplay: Want to make a name for yourself in the underground? You'll need to find it first. Races can happen anywhere and at any time and as players encounter rivals on the street they'll be clued into where they can buy the hottest upgrades or enter the most elite events. - New Gameplay Modes: Three new gameplay modes are added to last year's circuit, drift and drag competitions, challenging gamers to hone their skills in a number of driving disciplines. - Performance Tuning: Tune every aspect of your car's performance with hundreds of licensed aftermarket performance upgrades and then fine-tune everything from the gear ratio to the suspension for the ultimate ride. - The Hottest Cars: More than thirty of the most sought-after tuner cars are available from the hottest manufacturers--from Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan, and Toyota to Ford and Volkswagen, if they'r...

Driven- Inside BMW- the Most Admired Car Company in the World

2 stars (Nice history, boring read,) - As an auto industry follower, I can appreciate this book as a sort of historical reference for someone perhaps doing research. But as enjoyable reading, it falls far short. The book goes into a painfully detailed history of company events. In fact, I felt the title was a bit misleading, since it made me expect some interpretation as to why BMW is as admired as it is. Instead you basically get a chronology of events. 1 stars (Poor workmanship and limited insights) - Despite his years of experience as an auto journalist, Kiley is a sloppy writer, doesn't seem to have a clue about the mechanics and history of automobiles, and provides little in the way of new insights into what has made BMW successful. To give one example, he asserts that in the late 1960s BMW was unique in offering a wide range of engines in its cars and boosting the power of said engines almost yearly. In fact, both were standard Detroit practices at the time. This error is a byproduct of Kiley's urge to gush about everything BMW has ever done. Apparently the company's inarguable achievements are not enough--he must create additional "firsts" for it. To give another, I'll quote Kiley from page 12: "The higher the horsepower and the lighter the vehicle, the easier it is for engineers to achieve better low-end torque (power at low revolutions of the engine)." Sorry, but the weight of the vehicle has absolutely nothing to do with the torque curve of the engine. In addition, high horsepower usually comes at the expense of low-end torque because of inherent tradeoffs in engine intake system design. More troubling, all of the material is not Kiley's own. One poorly written section on Active Steering (a recent technical innovation that Kiley inaccurately credits entirely to BMW) left me wondering whether my own understanding of the system was incomplete (it was). So I Googled "steering transmission ratio" and found Kiley's words verbatim on a website that predates...

Ferrari - 1947-1997

5 stars (History of World Supercar Industry) - Antonio Ghini's book contains whatever lies below the "Prancing Horse" badge, for models produced in the 50 years period; moreover, it helps to understand and find answers of today's automotive & motorsports technologies' innovational questions which are solved decades before. The online version of the book is available at CuoreSPORTIVO ICEO Web Site with pictures. 2 stars (Awesome Official Account of Racing History) - This is the true story - from Enzo's days as an Alfa Romeo engineer and race mechanic, up to his death...and beyond. It's refreshing to find the story so well summed up - while it's not an unbiased account, it's exactly what you'd expect from the folks who make some of the most amazing machines on the face of this earth. What an awesome story, and great pictures to boot! 4 stars (Balanced book) - This book accomplish quite properly it mission. To give us a shallow look at the first 50 years of the make. Good and some very rare pictures, diagrams explaining technical solutions and good but condensed text. A must. ...

Metal Fabricator-s Handbook

4 stars (Good Starter Book) - This book is a good start for those wanting to know more about metal fabrication. Author sells alot of the handtools he mentions in the book. Lots of good info. 5 stars (A first rate little book) - Ought to be must reading not only for car guys but aircraft maintenance students, homebuilders, and for electronics hobbyists as well. Even if you aren't going to become as skilled as Mr. Fournier it helps to know what can and can't be done and what is involved, so you can intelligently talk to fabricators. 4 stars (Great book for general information.) - This is an excelent book for anyone who wants to get started or just looking for general info on metal fabrication. However I have to agree with some of the previous posts regarding it's lack of specific details. The book offers readers a good deal of information on the tools of the trade and the basics of metal fabrication. It is a great reference to point you in the right direction but you will have to go elsewhere for the more specific information. ...

Race Car Vehicle Dynamics R146

5 stars (Too good...) - This book is beyond review.. Its in a league of its own. The content is thorough, indepth and is easy to comprehend by anyone. I found the book enjoyable, not just informative. The graphs in the book reiterate what the text says in an easy and understandable way. I would highly recommend the book to anyone who would want to master vehicle dynamics, as well as engineers seeking to have topics such as aerodynamics and mechanics explained better, and in a more specified field. As well as topics such as vehicle design and race engineering from a management point of view. The book was written by the best in the business and you do get what you pay for. 5 stars (The mother of all books about race cars) - This is the mother of all books about race cars. If you were missing deep theoretical background on tuning your sports car or street car, this volume is for you. It is impossible to describe in detail what this textbook is about, in a single review. What I liked most is the chapter on dampers (shock absorbers). It gave me the answers to lots of questions that I had before reading this published work, for example how to choose "ride/handling compromise" when adjusting damping ratio? Why stiffer dampers are more comfortable on large-amplitude bumps, while softer dampers provide smoother ride on small-amplitude bumps? "In an automobile, a suspension is used to reduce the discomfort induced by unevenness in the highway. As measure of discomfort is the vertical acceleration that the passenger is subjected while sitting in the vehicle". The book demonstrates the model where the passenger is linked to the road via three springs in a sequence: tire, coil and the seat, and one damper (shock absorber). There is a graph showing passenger vertical acceleration depending on the amplitude (frequency) of road irregularities, for distinct shock absorbers with various damping ratios. For a stiff shock absorber this diagram shows relatively flat curve, wher...

Going Faster- Mastering the Art of Race Driving

5 stars (an exceptional book. a must read for any serious driver.) - This book is amongst the best I have ever read in terms of driving. It covers a tremendous amount of detail. This is a most read, is it not only from one of the top racing schools in the country, is allot cheaper. The information in this book is like having ten other books put together. Although this book covers almost everything it is not the only one to read. 5 stars (Perhaps the Most Complete Racing Instruction Book) - I think I must have bought almost every book there is on racing instruction over the years, and this book definitely ranks in the top three. It is incredibly complete and easy to understand. It also was good to read before the Skip Barber courses in order to get an advantage over the other drivers, and I still refer to it on a regular basis in Renault, etc. A MUST buy for anyone serious about competition! Peter Olson 4 stars (The Best Manual of a Beginning Competition Driver) - I couldn't "swallow" this book at once, it took me three sessions during a couple of months to figure out that amongst the good books on motor sports this one serves the role of a guidebook, of a manual of a beginning competition driver, best of all. What do I mean by "good books"? Competition Driving by Alain Prost, The Technique of Motor Racing by Piero Taruffi, Driving in Competition by Alan Johnson, Sports Car and Competition Driving by Paul Frere, to name a few. All of them are wise and not overcomplicated, and have no buzz about the success stories of champions, the buzz which is useless for the reader interested in driving techniques. I've found out that the definition of oversteer and understeer here is the most complete and most correct amongst the books that I've listed, yet without the formulas that may frighten somebody. It took the author 17 pages full of illustrations to explain these modes of car behaviour. This is the first big advantage of this book. Another major advantag...
