4 stars (World Atlas) - I received the atlas in a short amount of time. It made it quite nice since I was started school soon. 5 stars (As Goode as They Get) - When my father began work at the University of Michigan in 1932 toward a PhD in geography, he bought a copy of the then-new _Goode's_, the standard of geographers then as now. As the years went on he bought successive editions, giving me his old copies. I still have the first of these, a "revised and enlarged" edition of 1933. I grew up with maps. I remain fascinated with them and use them (and create them) constantly in my work. That old _Goode's_ is one of dozens of atlases on my shelves, and one of eight editions of this title that I have owned. The newer editions of it are the atlases I refer to most frequently. When I need more detail I try the massive and wonderful _Times World Atlas_, or turn to various geographic software packages I own. But nine times in ten I quickly find what I need, clearly and attractively presented, in _Goode's_. When I must travel to do my work and can take only one atlas, it is _Goode's_. Despite its compact and handy size, _Goode's_ does not compromise on coverage and detail. In fact, it is better on both counts than the great majority of "coffee-table" atlases. The key to this is that _Goode's_ is a just-the-fact atlas. There are no pictures, the text is brief and to the point. Fundamentally this is a map book. Color, shading, and standardized symbols are used effectively convey information. The density of presentation is chosen judiciously, packing as much information as possible in each map without making it necessary to squint through a magnifier. The gazetteer is excellent and comprehensive for an atlas of this size. Introductory material includes a nice introduction to cartography and map projections. There is a superb section of global thematic maps, analyzing many particular features of the physical and social landscape, and specialized thematic maps for each maj... 5 stars (National Geographic has made changes) - In December 2004, National Geographic (NG) updated the Persian Gulf plate (Plate 75) to accomodate the controversies surrounding the place-names used in the 8th edition. Here is my understanding of the changes made: 1. The term "Arabian Gulf" in parenthesis has been deleted. Instead, there is a small note that reads: "Historically and commonly known as the Persian Gulf, this body of water is also referred by some as the Arabian Gulf." 2. Persian names of all Iranian islands are used. (Kish instead of Qeys, Lavan alone instead of adding Sheykh Sha'eyb in parenthesis) 3. Deletion of "Occupied by Iran (Claimed by U.A.E.)" in reference to the islands Abu Musa, and Greater and Lesser Tunbs. These changes already appear on the website (www.nationalgeographic.com/mapmachine) and will apply to further printings or editions of the NG Atlas. Also, on the password-protected website for NG Atlas owners, there is a "brief summary of the historical origin of the term Persian Gulf". There is also a note on the place-naming policy of NG. (The online update feature is great - you can download and/or print updated plates and put them in your atlas. This not new for NG Atlases, except that they used to send updates by mail.) Overall, I am impressed with NG's response to this situation. I am also very impressed with the quality of the atlas and its contents, except for the outermost/superficial binding paper. I have had the atlas for about 6 months, and with moderate use, the paper around the bottom of the spine has frayed. The binding itself is intact, though. 1 stars (Foolishly...!!!) - The persian gulf is persian gulf for ever and never changed. 1 stars (Foolishly...!!!) - The persian gulf is persian gulf for ever and never changed. ... 3 stars (Why so large?) - I am a University of Minnesoota student and we use this text for our introductory Human Anatomy course. (Unfortunately they came out with a new edition and I couldn't sell it back to the bookstore.) Strictly in terms of the content this book was average because I often needed more information on certain aspects of the human anatomy. My real frustration was due to the fact that I feel the publisher should have supplied a carrying case specifically designed to carry such a large, awkward book. I realize that the size contributed to larger pictures but I feel it was a bit overboard! Finally, as I mentioned before, a new edition came out very recently. The new book resembles the previous edition too much. It's unfortunate we live in such a capitalistic society as to allow such a situation to take place.. ... 1 stars (ZERO STARS !!!!!!!!) - I use the desktop software and have been content with it. I find STreet Atlas easier to use but INACCURATE and MS Streets and Trips to be MORE accurate but less intuitive. Street Atlas for Handheld is a complete, unfinished, unpolished, inaccurate and VERY unintuitive waste of money! Basically, the reviews previous to mine have said it all. I would recommend Tom Tom Navigator for Handhelds or Microsoft's Streets and Trips for PocketPC. 1 stars (Flush your money down the toilet!) - At least you'll get to see it swirl around before it disappears. Then you can walk away and forget it instead of wasting HOURS AND HOURS in frustration after you've wasted the money. I bought this program because I thought it would be more current on the local streets than my old GPS software that came out in 2003 - WRONG! Less current, and not nearly as user friendly or anything else you want street GPS for. The other reviews do a good job of telling you some of the weaknesses. I just wish I had read them before I bought this trash. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS IF YOU ARE THINKING OF USING IT WITH A HANDHELD DEVICE!!! 1 stars (Worst handheld application ever!) - I've been developing software for over 30 years and have never seen (and spent money on!) a worse piece of commercial software!! It's not even good enough to be called an Alpha version! If the developers ever used this software on a road-trip, I'm sure they're all dead by now since it's so badly designed that it's actually a danger to anyone that uses it! Here are just a few things to hate about this program: 1) Selecting map rectangles in the desktop app is slow and anti-intuitive. 2) The handheld software draws maps very slowely, if at all! 3) None of the controls on the display are intuitive. I tried for hours to figure out how to make the icon that represents the car, stay in the middle and have the map move. Still haven't figured it out!! 4) Trying to route to an address... 1 stars (Worst Program Ever) - I never got this thing running. My computer exceeds all of the specs required to work this thing and it crashed and crashed and crashed. Do not purchase this whatever you do. 1 stars (Still no support for non-English version of Windows) - I have used a Street Atlas since 2004. Steet Atlas 2004 & 2005 versions do not support non-English version of Windows. Even if you have a English version of Windows, if your default language setting is not English, some major features of the Street Atlas, such as find, do not work at all. So I must change the language setting to English and reboot the computer to use it. It was a real hassle and I have really wanted this problem to be fixed in 2006 version. However, that problem still remains and you even need to change the language setting just to install Street Atlas 2006 (Installation was fine with different language setting in 2004 and 2005 version). So if your default language setting is not English in Windows, you'd better use Microsoft Steets & Trips. MS Streets & Trips works fine in any language setting and it starts to support a voice prompt feature and turn-by-turn GPS direction guide from the 2006 version. I am really disappointed that Delorme does not care about the non-English users. 4 stars (Delorme Street Maps) - Seems to give the information we need with directions and maps. Still perfecting using it and getting familiar but it seems to be good for our needs. ... 5 stars (Wonderful learning tool!) - I am an instructor/trainer and this book is wonderful for informing students how the horses body is put together and why some horses move differently than others. It also gives the student a chance to see the inside workings of the horse so that they better understand the vet and farrier when they have to explain what is wrong with the horse and treatment options. This book would also benefit anyone who wants to know more about the horse's anatomy. Not to mention it is fun to color! 5 stars (Nice Muscle Sketches) - I wish that I had this book last year. I did a muscle and joint force project for which I needed detailed muscle diagrams of the horse's hindquarters. When I needed the illustrations, of course, I could not find any that had the appropriate level of detail (not online, through videos, books, etc). For this reason when I recently saw this book it. I would strongly recommend that any other rider or person with a starting interest in horse healthcare do the same. This is an excellent addition to a equine reference library. My version is spiral bound and had clear crisp black and white illustrations that can be xeroxed or colored in. 5 stars (perfectly simple) - The coloring atlas of horse anatomy is a wonderful tool for the study and understanding of the horse anatomy. It is presented to the viewer in a form of simplicity but at the same time with unmatchable professionalism and details, evidently the author has a great respect, knowledge and understanding of the noble animal and the viewer as well. The atlas is easily approachable by the first time student for its easy and clear graphical and illustrative format. The idea of "do it yourself" it's great. Coloring the components of the horse anatomy while studying it helps the anatomist to impress the subject in his/her mind with remarkable and undeleting results. One of his kind. Without any doubt necessary for a serious study of the horse anatomy. ... 1 stars (What a disappointing experience!) - These are some of the most wonderful maps in the world, especially from a historical geography perspective. But of what use are they in this format? It is difficult to search, impossible to browse effectively, and there is no way for an educator to present these images in any sort of useful format. I would suggest buying this collection only if you have hours of free time with nothing better to do than switch back and forth between 8 CDs for mild (but frustrating) entertainment with a nice glass of wine. 1 stars (Difficult to use) - I purchased this product thinking that I would be able to sail around the world like a National Geographic adventurer. Unfortunately, I have been unable to use it at all. It appears that you need to place each disk into your computer as prompted to view the contents. I want to be able to stick the disks in once and have my computer bring up the information when requested. Maybe I didn't give it a good try, but I have not been able to see any maps at all. 4 stars (NG Maps and XP) - I have had this collection since 2002 and never had a problem until today: I was aghast when I inserted the install CD into my spanking new XP setup, only to be informed by the dreaded popup that 'National Geographic Maps Will Only Run Under Windows 95'! Then a furious search turned up the following on the NG website: "XP has the Program Compatibility Wizard which can help XP run programs developed under previous versions of Windows. To activate this feature: Click on the Start button. Go to All Programs then Accessories. Select the Program Compatibility Wizard. Select for it to look into the CD drive. Choose for it to run in Windows 98/ME mode. Another alternative would be to make a dual-boot partition." The first solution worked instantly for me, even without setting it to a lower screen resolution when given the option. I love this collection. Yes, the maps are scanned. 1 stars (Don't Buy THIS SOFTWARE) - I am in the same boat with the other reviewer other than I cannot return this program. I don't know who voted these the parents choise because they don't intall properly. The content and graphic take me back to the early 90's when computers where getting big. Jump-Start and Knowlege Adventure programs are much better and keeping the kids wanting to play. Basicly only my 5 years old will play the spanish game, when it works. 1 stars (Bad Software Alert !!!!) - Unfortunatley I bought this software before I read the reviews, and I absolutely agree with the other reviewers (elementary and middle school)that this software is awful, garbage, etc, etc. If you manage to work through the installation problems you will find the content utterly boring. This software has been returned. 1 stars (Not worth yourt time or money (negative star rating )) - This software is bundled with five cd's offering lessons in earth science, typing, reading and spelling, social studies and writing, critical thinking, basic math, foreign languages, and fractions. The installation of these programs is unacceptable. Some of the programs will not load on XP. Some of the programs are run from the CD's. As for the actual software, some are 1996, 1997, 2000 written programs with limited offerings. Some of these programs contain old code written for Windows 95, 98. Some of the programs will not load the complete software on the hard drive. So you are stuck having to change cd's when changing programs. I would love to see who evaluated this program for the Parents Choice Foundation. My children were not happy with the software offered. I will be returning it tomorrow. ...
