2 stars (The Title helped it sell) - The book was boring to read. The examples were weak. The title was the best thing. 4 stars (Great reference guide --- but don't fall for the title!) - I bought this book with, I guess, the belief that the author actually offered esoteric knowledge about the subject he's writing about. Of course, he implies he does right in the title, as a matter of fact. The gentleman knows how to sell. It's a good book, and in fact, it does exactly what it says it does. It gives you stategies for handling social situations and manipulating people, but they aren't secrets. Many of the tactics are things that we all know we can do. Others are things that we forgot we can do. I don't think many people will find tactics here they've never been exposed to before. Putting all these strategies together is a great idea, and makes this a worthy read. I should also say this book isn't very academic, so I wouldn't suggest it for research purposes. It describes effective strategies, gives some examples, and then summarizes them. In this form, they're easy to memorize and reference in the future. Overall, I'd rate it as a concise, easy, effective read. I think it would be a handy reference guide for those who are just starting out in the real world, or perhaps even trying to start their own business, if only so they can see how power players will play them. Had the book been written, printed, titled, and advertised as a pocket reference, I would certainly have given it five stars. 4 stars (The Art of Manipulation) - While much of what David Lieberman covers in "Get Anyone To Do Anything" is basic knowledge when it comes to interpersonal relationships, he does manage to provide plenty of meaningful bits of insight that most readers will likely find useful. Tactics covered in this book have been included in such writings as special forces guerilla warfare manuals, interview & interrogation guidebooks, and sales literature... just to name a few. 4 stars (The future of christianity) - Fundementalists beware, your world may be shaken when you read this intelligent book. Borg is a great scholar and theologian. he has a nice touch and presents jesus in a believable and humble light without taking away the divine aspect. This is an antidote against religious fundementalists who wnat to own Jesus and create an exclusive cult they call christianity. 4 stars (Informative book about the historical Jesus) - I actually decided to read Borg's books after reading some of John Crossan's books where Borg was referenced. I thought the set-up of this book was extremely helpful in illustrating what Borg was discussing. However, I think I had hoped this would be more of a "heart-felt" novel. I understand Borg had to get in all the historical information about Jesus (and he did an incredible job at that) but I had hoped he would speak of Jesus on more of an emotional level. I felt as I was more of an outsider looking in on the life of Jesus rather than a comrade right next to him. And perhaps that is the effect Borg wanted. All in all, a great book with great information. What I found most interesting in this whole book was the link between Jesus and Sophia (wisdom). Borg makes an excellent point to contrast the "Son of God" image of Jesus by saying Jesus was personified as Wisdom- a feminine term in Greek. He does this to stress the many metaphors used when defining Jesus and says we must not take them literally. All in all a great read with great information. 5 stars (Dr. Borg is a gifted writer and loving Spirit filled person) - Before reading Marcus Borg's masterpiece "Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time" I was a self proclaimed agnostic. After reading it I realized I wasn't an agnostic, but an atheist to the God of conservative Christianity. Borg carefully and compassionately details another form of Christianity, a Christianity centered on love of neighbor, love of self, love of intellect and love of the God i... 1 stars (Lance is A Star, This Book Is Not!) - The writer spends time with Lance Armstrong during the 2004 season, but spends most of his pages covering other racers, and nothing that I can recall about Lance's struggle with cancer, his early racing years, etc. I did find some of the statistical information interesting - eg. there are about 5 serious injuries/week during cycling season, spread among the approximately 400 professional cyclists. In comparison, for NASCAR 2002, there were only 5 serious injuries the entire year. Lance's maximum heart rate is 185 beats/second, and can sustain an output power level of almost 500 watts for 30-60 minutes. (Try one of those 100 watt light-bulb power displays - damn tough, though only arms are used.) According to the author most can only sustain 500 watts on a bicycle for about ten seconds. A TV report stated that Armstrong's heart was about 10% larger than average upon birth, and is now about one-third larger than average; still another source stated that his lungs can consume more than double the amount of oxygen of a normal, healthy man. "Losing weight is the most important thing you can do," according to Lance. Each ounce adds about a second for an eight-mile climb. Trek sponsors Lance, and builds his bicycles - the new one for that year involved about $250,000 in expense, and it didn't help him so he threw it on a trash-pile. His tires are glued to the rim after being aged two years in the darkness of a basement. Finally, I'd always heard that riding behind someone takes less energy - the author reports that its about 30% less. Quite a lot, and hence the logic of bicycling teams. Armstrong's "It's Not About the Bike" is a much, much better and more interesting work 5 stars (Inspiring and Captivating) - I began this book with very little knowledge regarding professional cycling and the Tour De France. I was unaware that competitive cycling is to Europe what boxing is to the United States; a sport where most ...
