5 stars (Owner's review) - This book is in awesome shape, I used it for an online course, so i have never carried in a book bag. No markings, and very very minimal corners bent. 5 stars (Interesting and real world scenarios) - I teach technical writing at a community college and frequently switched textbooks until I discovered Mike Markel's. It is well organized, gives 8 measures of excellence in technical writing that students quickly grasp, has very up-to-date scenarios that prompt critical reading and writing and the online quizzes and resources are the frosting on the cake. This book is a great tool for educators, students and absolutely anyone who wishes to write in a professional manner. 3 stars (Well written, over priced common sense.) - The information in the book as well as the scenarios presented are well put. The writing is adequate for the subject. Overall, though, I feel the cost of the book exceeded the value. Much of the information in the book is common sense. ... 5 stars (Excellent service) - It was incredible. I ordered it on wednesday night, it was shipped on friday and I got it during the weekend. Besides the book was new in perfect conditions! Thank you. 2 stars (A textbook for college business majors (only?)) - If you want a general IT book then don't even think about buying this one, despite its title. This is a textbook for college business majors, and looks at things from the business angle. The book is less suitable for non-student readers. It is geared for use by a lecturer who can draw attention to the important concepts underlying the field of IT, and can steer students to useful supplementary material. The book races across the surface of the whole field of IT. The authors have packed in a lot of material, but at a cost. The explanations may be good enough for students to answer a quiz about the various buzzwords, but there is not enough space here to cover anything in depth. The students, and you, may be left without a clear idea of what the words really mean. At the other end of the scale, the book struggles to make plain the broad sweep of IT concepts. Although the authors try hard, ideas tend to get lost amidst the large number of factoids. One book is never going to be enough to cover all of IT. Your choices are to be more selective about which area you want to learn about, to pick a book which is more clearly aimed at being a simple overview, or to buy this book and work really hard at following up its leads to other material to fill in the gaps. ... 4 stars (use a search engine instead of this book?) - This is one of the standard reference texts in telecom. A massive explanation of virtually any term you are likely to encounter in the field. It is a dictionary, not an encyclopedia, so it does not go into any term in any depth. The book has a piquant attraction. Open a page at random and glance through it. Often there are hilarious words and explanations of these. Revealing a droll wit. But aside from that, these days you might prefer to use a search engine for look up quick meanings. 4 stars (Newtons Ok. Certainly the price was right.) - Just finished a Computer Information Systems class and very glad I had Newtons. All of my classmates struggled finding simple defintions such as "JAVA", although I was surprised not to find "People Soft" in it. Made the class a lot easier, and made me walk away from the class with my moneys worth. While www.wikipedia.org just as good (and free), it's not a book is it? Books will be there in 30 years. Where will the ebook in your RAM be in 30 years. 5 stars (If you can have only one telecom book...) - make it this one. Run across an unfamiliar acronym? Wikipedia can't help? Crack open the Newton's. "Comprehensive" doesn't do it justice. It's funny, too. ... 5 stars (Excelent Book on IS-41) - I just read the authentication chapter, and I just left behind all my doubts about authentication. Anyway not just the Auth Chapter is excelent but the whole book. 5 stars (The book to get for IS-41) - Highly recommended book for IS-41... the networking standard between AMPS, TDMA and CDMA switches, HLR and VLRs. I'm relieved there's a book out there which explains everything in layman's term, yet goes through enough details to give a great grasp of the important concepts of mobile networking. The authors give a great background of mobile telecommunications, the making of the IS-41 standard, mobility management, call processing (and most of the important feature procesing), and SMS. Concepts like authentication and mobile roaming are covered quite well. The basic format of each section remains the same, so it's easy to follow. If you really want the details, like the IS-41 parameters, it's not in this book, but that's when you go to the actual standards document! Kudos to Michael Gallagher and Randall Snyder for an awesome book! 5 stars (Excelente libro, f??cil de comprender.) - Un excelente libro del protocolo IS-41, gradual en su presentaci?#n. No entra al detalle de los bytes. Mantiene un muy buen nivel, con claros ejemplos. He preparado un buen curso de este protocolo a partir de este y otros libros ... 2 stars (OK but could be much better written) - The information contains in the book makes it a pretty good primer on SIP. The organization of the book and its content is very good. The language and ways in which the author explains certain things are confusing. I think the author should be able to do a much better job in explaining things. I often find myself having to re-read certain explainations twice and much carefully when I feel I shouldn't have to -- the topics are not complicated but not well explained. Someone like Doug Comer or Richard Stevens would probably be able to make it a much easier read. 4 stars (Costly, but a great introduction to SIP) - Really enjoyed this book - easy to read, and the examples emphasized the points he was trying to make. The only negative is the cost of the book ... I got mine from the library, and was shocked to see how much this was selling for. After you understand SIP, this would be a decent reference book, but not the best. 3 stars (Just an introduction to the SIP RFC) - This book simply summarizes some of the SIP RFC into more user-friendly english. It consists mostly of lists of SIP headers and error codes, lifted from the RFC. There is no sample code or discussion of SIP applications or architecture. Of course, the RFC is pretty hefty, so this book has been a useful introduction. I still use the RFC as my real reference, though, because there are some minor discrepancies between the book and the RFC, such as some error code names. ... 4 stars (An excellent primer.) - As an expert in rare violins with extensive experience at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Antiques Roadshow, I always thought I was able to telephony. Turns out I didn't know the first thing about it! Live and learn, I always say. Thanks for opening my eyes, Mr. Harte. 5 stars (A good switchover for Telecom people) - This is a good introductory book for Telecom people who are looking to get into IP Telephony. The diagrams are good and the explanation are easy to understand.I even talked to the author and he was helpful. 1 stars (Introduction to IP Telephony) - Do NOT buy this PDF if you are a serious professional and want to work for VoIP. You will waste your money buying this and waste your time reading this. I do not think I can give even one star to this book. However Amazon does not accept review if I do not give at least one star hence I have give that rating. ... 1 stars (Little useful information) - This book tries to dumb-down SIP. It looks like it wants to be a training manual for a "Learning SIP" course, but doesn't provide any real technical detail. It is poorly written and a tedious read. This is the first sentance: "SIP is a standardized technology that allows for the sending of voice, data, and video between communication devices on public (e.g. Internet) or private (e.p. local area networks) data networks." ... and it doesn't get any better after that. SIP Demystified by Gonazlo Camarillo is a much better read. It is engaging and well written, providing useful information for IT engineers, managers and technologists. ... 4 stars (Good Introduction) - This is a very good starting guide for somebody not used to billing processeses. Moreover there is not so much books dealing with this discipline. I am lookinf forward the full version if there gonna any... 3 stars (Good High-Level Overview for Beginners) - This is a good, but not terribly polished, high-level overview of telecom billing processes. If you've spent any time at all with telecom billing systems you'll be familiar with 95% of the information in this document, if not more. The material is appropriate for anyone who's getting involved with telecom billing for the first time or who has been working on the periphery of the billing systems and would like to know more. Don't expect a lot of detail - there can't be a lot in a document that contains only 31 pages of content written using large type and a lot of white space. For example, the entire section on Hardware and Software consists of the following paragraph: "The hardware usually includes high performance computers that operate proprietary software. Due to the complexity of hardware and software billing systems, continuous training is required in order to ensure quality services to the customers and to provide revenue assurance." 4 stars (Introduction to Telecom Billing) - This is a good book for anyone who needs a quick and succint introduction on the billing process in Telecom industry without getting into technical details.
