5 stars (Well worth buying and reading) - This book is aimed at explaining proficiency oriented language teaching, and has very valuable material on proficiency and its importance. This is something many teachers seem to overlook as too obvious to be of concern, but Hadley shows it to be a central issue in teaching. The criticism made by one reviewer that it's tilted too much toward communicative teaching is mistaken. There's a difference between communicative teaching and proficiency oriented teaching, although they are obviously related. This book, like any other, is not sufficient by itself, but needs to be read an compared to others in order to get a range of viewpoints. It is not of instantaneous practical use to classroom teachers, but rather deals with the ideas behind teaching methods. It is a very valuable addition to a teacher's bookshelf and I have no regrets about buying it. 5 stars (Why did I buy this book?) - I remember using it in a course I took a few years ago, and I was thrilled to find so many different aspects of language teaching covered in one volume. When I was thinking of buying the present edition, I asked a friend, someone with a Master's degree in TESL/TEFL, her recommendation, and she said: "Well, Doug Brown recommended it to me." So I bought Teaching Language in Context, and am very glad I did. 5 stars (If I were to choose one book) - No book can cover every aspect of language instruction, but by all means Hadley's work would be right up there with Ellis, Richards and Rodgers among others. This is a solid book, jam packed with historical facts and insights, and I feel has caught the full heart of the profession representing the current state of the profession. I could not disagree with the first reviewer more. I am reading this book through and I love this book. The Art of Teaching Writing

3 stars (Review of The Art of Teaching Writing ) - Calkins book was an easy, yet informative read. As a education student, I learned a lot about how to motivate children to want to write. Calkins techniques are practical and simple. It seems that the book could be geared to not just elementary grades, but also to middle school ages. The examples of student writings were great. I will definitely be re-reading this book when I begin teaching in a couple of years. 4 stars (The Art of Teaching and Writing) - In the book The Art of Teaching and Writing, Lucy McCormick Calkins discusses various types of ways on how to instruct children to write efficient papers. The techniques that she illustrates in her book mostly came from her original ideas. These effective ideas could be used while instructing children or when teacher workshops are set up. Calkins writing style was very easy to read. She sets various examples to help illustrate her teaching techniques. One issue that I had with this book was the fact that the topics were too broad. Another problem that I have is that this book is not appropriate for elementary teachers. It could possible be used for middle school students but it is more suitable for teachers who are instructing High School Students. 5 stars (Creating Writers Through 6-Trait Writing Assessment and Instruction (4th Ed)) - This book gives so many examples of the qualities to look for and teach in writing instruction. I especially like the fact that this edition is more inclusive of secondary ideas and samples. With this book as a guide, it is hard to miss what is important to the writing instructional process. The information is comprehensive and user friendly. 4 stars (Great info, inconvenient format) - Creating Writers got me charged up and well-prepared for teaching sriting/revision using the 6 Trait model. Spandel writes well, using a combination of research-based information and personal anecdotes to keep the reader's attention. I appreciate the number and variety of samples she included for practice revision/assessment. The samples were, however, not very easy to duplicate for classroom use. The print is too small and there are often two samples on one page, or one sample on several pages. The layout is difficult to work with. Overall, though, the book is excellent. I have been to two training sessions about 6 Traits, but it took Spandel's book to get me hooked and enthusiastic, and made me confident about using the 6 Traits in the classroom.The information deserves a 5 star rating. Bringing Words to Life- Robust Vocabulary Instruction

5 stars (Lifesaver) - This book came during my summer vacation when my motivation to read was quite low........I read it in one sitting and got so many ideas for my work with language impaired elementary school students. It is timely and appropriate for all age levels. Many educators are looking for research based best practices and this is a great reference! 5 stars (Bringing Words to Life in the classroom!) - Being a teacher, I found "Bringing Words To Life" very helpful. I've gotten so many good ideas to bring to the classroom. Today, we have so many children who sit in front of the television or are focused on video games that they don't have enough real life experience to relate to vocabulary. Having necessary vocabulary skills is very important in reading comprehension. If a child doesn't understand what they're reading then they won't be able to comprehend the story. Reading the story has given my not only ideas to enhance vocabulary but it's given me the inspiration to be creative. I would suggest any teacher read this book to become inspired! 4 stars (Bringing Words to Life) - Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction is a good book to use for resource of ways to teach vocabulary. I found Chapter 4: Developing Vocabulary in the Earliest Grades to be the most helpful for finding ideas on how to teach vocabulary to my reading groups. 5 stars (Great Way to Study the Scriptures) - I am on Genesis 20 studying my way through this Inductive Bible. I am seeing new insights in every chapter. God is really using this Bible to grow me in the Lord. I wish I could join the Bible Study at Church that is based on this Bible, but for now I'm thankful for the resource. This Bible is for Serious Study. It is not a "light" study. 5 stars (Absolutely wondeful bible for all to use) - I have never been one to just sit and read the Word. I have purchased MANY bibles in the past and none of them seemed to fit. Are you like me? Behind the Wheel Chinese Mandarin - Level 1- Learn to Speak Mandarin Chinese Quickly and Easily- 8

5 stars (Exceptionally Excellent) - I have purchased and successfully used Behind the Wheel Chinese/Mandarin. It blows me away that a person buying a car course in Chinese would complain about having a written text, Pinyin version or otherwise. Any true scholar of Chinese will tell you that learning to speak the language correctly is the key. Written Chinese is a whole new ball of wax and can actually detract from the learning experience for speaking purposes at least. Imagine trying to read Chinese while driving. Give me a break. For that reason, Behind the Wheel Chinese is simple, straightforward, easy to understand, easy to use. The course has two excellent native Mandarin speakers, a male and a female and an American instructor without an accent who explains everything. Both voices repeat twice so that you can duplicate the difficult and challenging sounds of Mandarin which uses different 'tones' to convey meaning. You learn all of this stuff in the comfort of your own car without having to look up or read anything. If you really want to learn to speak Mandarin, I recommend you go out and buy this course immediately. After you have learned to speak Mandarin at a conversational level from the course like I have, then go out and learn to write it if you will. Not me. I'm thrilled enough just to be able to speak and understand Mandarin at a normal conversational level. 2 stars (Almost but not quite) - There is no written version of the words and phrases on the CD's. A Pinyin version would make this set exceptional, and accompanying Chinese characters would make it even more useful. As is, this version depends solely on memorizing sounds and their associated meaning. Furthermore, similar sounds cannot be compared via their written counterpart. A lot of good work and design wasted for lack of "blueprints." 5 stars (This book is great!!) - I am currently studying to be a teacher and taking a course in teaching ESOL. Our class uses this book and believe or not, it's actually one of this textbooks you can't put down! The authors keep the audience interested by giving examples of real-life scenarios. I highly recommend this book to get a better view of how to make ESL students adapt to a new environment. This book focuses on the literacy development for ELL students which is so critical to their success in education and in life. Theory is transformed into practice with solid guidance for teachers working with ELLs in process writing, literature study, and content area studies. 3 stars (CLAD Text) - A well written text essential for acquiring CLAD credentialing. Myths are perpetuated which greatly reduces the credibility - there is only one "race", humans or Homo sapiens. Very few of us were born or came from the Caucasus Mountains of eastern Europe, yet 17th century artificial constructs of "race" and "Caucasian" are used. There is no discussion of how skin pigmentation is an ecotype adaptation, not a "race." Science, Scientific American, Discovery and other peer-reviewed journals have corrected "race" misconceptions repeatedly - yet the authors, with education backgrounds, appear to have not completed a review of current literature. There is no discussion of critical thinking (www.criticalthinking.org). Children of "color" are discussed, but there is no discussion of children of "pallor". The 3rd edition can be greatly improved by being current, i.e., people of pallor (so-called "white") are now the "minority" in many communities; a CD-ROM or DVD and online video streaming resources; correct use of the term "race." Inquiry is discussed under Science, but only the Natl Science Education Standards are acknowleged - TIMSS, Geography, Project 2061 (AAAS), GLOBE (www.globe.gov) 15,000+ schools in 100 countries on 7 continents and multiple other standards are ignored. The authors get it wrong regarding the language of Science, many students with nonEnglish backgrounds have an advantage over English speakers because of the Latin and Greek roots. Effective teaching uses "hands-on, minds-on" not "familiarize, memorize, regurgitate and forget." Effective K-12 and university instructors minimize lecturing and maximize opportunities to internalize knowledge across curricula. 5 stars (The best reading methods textbook I've found) - I teach a course in elementary reading methods for undergraduate education students. This is the third textbook I've tried, and it is excellent! It has what students need to know about the theory and practice of teaching reading, written in a very readable, non-overwhelming way. Plus it has lots of practical teaching ideas. Our lab school saw it and ordered several copies for its teachers also. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (A must have!!) - I was first introduced to this book in one of my graduate literacy courses and I have been hooked every since. The teachers at my school pass it around constantly looking for ideas. My favorite aspect of this book is the fact that there are real teachers giving real examples of what works in their classrooms. There are no strategies that seem too hard implement in your classroom, because the layout is right there!! You know it can be done and it words because the examples in the book are proof! You don't feel like you are reading about some ideal or Utopia of a classroom. You are reading about REAL classrooms. I love it. 4 stars (Wouldn't it be nice.....) - That's the beginning of an old Beach Boys' song and maybe a good response to the fine research and development of what is called "dialectical behavioral therapy." It's a fine paradigm and tacitly acknowledges that effective therapy is not a one hour a week process, but an on-going one with multi-modal tasks and treatments, and ideally with a therapy team. This book is a great handbook, but NASA publishes excellent handbooks on operating space vehicles: but it doesn't do much good if you can't afford a launchpad (more on this metaphor in a moment). The book clearly lays out the task of the therapist and client. The client should do homework assignments, self-monitoring, reflection, etc. That is all fine and good if one has a research grant and a "captive audience" so to speak, but in the real world, how many people could adhere to such a regimen. As insurance company allowances for mental health severely limit length of treatment and quality of treatment, and with the average American's work week having expanded ten hours per week since the early 1980's (see "The Future of Success"-Robert Reich), who are the clients that will truly benefit from ...

This eminently readable book is good scholarship authored by two theologians in the evangelical tradition. The thrust of the book is spelled out in the title, "How to Read the Bible." The authors do not insist on a particular interpretation, but show the reader HOW to go about discovering comtemporary meaning and application from these ancient documents and how to avoid faulty hermeneutics. But she has some outdated ideas on horse training. Compare the advice you get in her book "The Formative Years" with some of the more enlightened trainers published in the last 20 years. 5 stars (A valuable addition to your equestrian library.) - The number of excellent reviews for this book reflect the application to riders of all levels and disciplines. The most valuable aspect of this book is that it encourages the rider to formulate a plan for their schooling sessions and make a conscious decision not to do the same thing day in day out - something we are all guilty of on occasion. 5 stars (Best Golf Lesson Ever) - Tiger Woods picked the right guy -- I am a 7 handicap and this is the best golf instruction book I have ever read (Nicklaus, Hogan, Woods, Watson, Harmon, Penick, Couples, Floyd, etc.). The one-plane angle concept is so technically sound and the only golf-aid you need to dramatically improve your swing is a mirror. Excellent pictures help capture exactly what Hank is explaining. At any level, this book is a cornerstone for building a bomb-proof golf swing.
