5 stars ( The Plane Truth for Golfers ) - Excellent, straight forward, presented in simple logical terms and concepts. A valuable book for anyone who wants to learn more about the golf swing. 5 stars (the plane truth for golfers) - Frustrated with my lack of distance (age 75) signed-up for the one-olane swing and am really surprised at the results. Try it - you'll like it.. 5 stars (Destined to be a Classic Instructional Book) - Finally, someone has cleared the "instructional" air to enable golfers (especially those that are golf magazine and Golf Channel addicts) to recognize which tips apply to them. Also, it's refreshing to see an instructor of Mr Hardy's caliber come out so strongly in favor of a swing type (the 1 plane swing) that the general golf community has been led to believe (by TV analysts and other highly recognized swing gurus) was inferior. This book did a good job of giving the reader a "side by side" comparison between the 1-plane and 2-plane swings. Although it's probably more suited for a 1-plane swinger, at the very least it enables a 2-plane swinger to understand he's a 2-plane swinger and heed advice accordingly. ... 2 stars (Don't see it) - This book was not written well. I'm sorry, but I don't see how it has been so popular over the years. He just absolutely does not explain things well enough for you to learn something. Not even the grip. Don't buy this. Buy the Bobby Jones book. It's awesome. 5 stars (Must read for beginners and low handicappers) - This is with out a doubt the best golf book I've read! I only wish I had read it when I first took up golf. The level of detail is extremely impressive, and it's an easy read. 4 stars (Five Lessons: the modern fundamentals of golf) - A bit out dated but still loaded with good advice. 3 stars (not really for dummies) - I am as dummy as you can get them as I bought the book to prepare myself for my first golf lesson. However, in my opinion the book is not really for people who know nothing. It seems more suitable for people who already play some golf, but who want to know a bit more around it (famous players, nice golf courses,...), but less suited for people who want to save some bucks by preparing themselves for serious golf lessons. Often the 'Dummies' books are really funny, but in this one I thought the jokes were often too artificial. Perhaps golf is no fun? 3 stars (Not everyone is a dummie) - This book (I have the original version) is entertaining and useful in that it includes the whole golfing experience, from selecting clothes to on-course etiquette. But it is not anywhere near the only golf book you'll need. The photography used to illustrate technique is not as clear as it might be. The authors use a lot of space dropping names of celebrity golf pros they know and telling amusing stories. I found myself always looking for more detail, more physiology and more physics. Golf for Dummies is very good for neophytes, but not enough for those who become enthusiasts. 4 stars (Good Golf Book) - This book has many tips on how to play better golf. The pictures are good and easy to follow. All in all a pretty good golf instruction book. If you really want an awesome book on golf instruction get: The Ultimate Golf Instruction Guide: Key Techniques for Becoming a Zero Handicap Golfer or Better by Patrick Leonardi isbn 1933023090 This last book showed me how to improve with techniques that are much easier to follow. 5 stars (The Greatest Game Ever Played) - I love this book. I am a woman over 60 who started playing golf 8 years ago. I have achieved a 17 handicap and realize how tough this game. The Greatest Game is a marvelous account of real people, playing a grueling game. I have just spent 4 days playing BAndon Dunes. This is akin to the era of The Greatest Game. I can't wait for the movie. 5 stars (Golf history is great!) - This is a must read for anyone wanting to know about the early history of American golf. This book is soon to come out in a movie - so I would read it as soon as you can! 5 stars (The greatest book about the greatest game) - Frost's account may not be truly be about the "birth of modern golf" but it certainly recounts the beginning of the popularity, if not the ascendency, of golf in the United States. The portraits of the characters in this saga, from Vardon, to Ouimet and even Eddy Lowry made vivid the explicit details of the critical rounds played on those hallowed Country Club grounds. It was golf history in the style and scholarship of Barbara Tuchman. A fabulous read for any with a passion for history and golf, even if you have never been interested in the history of golf. 5 stars (Great book on mental game of golf ) - The mental game of book of golf is worth checking out. 5 stars (Fearless Indeed) - This book teaches you to block out all distractions. It details how to focus on the golf course and your target. You hear from many of the pro golfers from today and in the past, explaining their thought process. If you take this book seriously, it will definitely improve your mental approach to the game. 4 stars (Forget about what others think. ) - Dr. Valeante's focus on fear and mastery is unique among the mental game gurus. I've always been intrigued by how the fear of a three foot putt can paralyze a perfectly healthy man. (I've been there.) As Dr. Valiante points out, a lot of it has to do with ego. When you're preoccupied with what other people think, you can't perform up to your potential. But it's hard to escape ego-oriented thinking. The achievement orientation that's so pervasive in our society feeds into it. For better or worse, we're taught to judge people, and we subconsciously know that we're being judged. But this book will help you reframe your thinking and minimize the effects of ego on your golf game. It will help you forget about the bad shots, and focus on the positive process of improvement. There are so many books on the mental side of golf, it's getting to the point of oversaturation. They all offer good insight and helpful information, but some are more applicable than others. This one falls right about in the middle. Dr. Valiante offers plenty of antidotes from tour players to illustrate his ideas, and he makes a very important point... that every round of golf should be approached as a learning experience. ... 5 stars (Fate, Persistance & A Slam) - Frost has done it again, a marvelous read of golf's rich history and lore. This follows his excellent work on Ouimet and the start of America's love with this game and its champions. Frost is good at weaving the story here of Jones and the only Grand Slam to date with the surrounding cultural news. This provides necessary backdrop to the golf. The persistance of this individual who many a time could have and felt like chucking it in, but kept on, learning and growing not by wins so much, but by the losses. Fate had its share in all this as well, as Jones and associates knew. The incidents on and off the links where it almost seemed as the script had already been written, as Pop Keeler sensed from the outset. There are many good stories here, written with gusto and passion and solid wordscultping. Wonderful photos grace each new chapter. Many developments leading up to the Slam never realized were revealed here: Mail Freeburg saving them from burning train bridge; skip shot across the lake; etc. This is must reading for avid golfer, for the paths cross likes of Nicklaus, Palmer, Eisenhower, Hagan, Sarazen, etc. His legendary amateur status, then retirement, accomplishments in studies and law, and friendships abound. Long but will hold one's attention and get one through, so that re-reads can and do happen. 4 stars (Excellent and Entertaining) - Mark Frost again shows he has his finger on the pulse of American sports history with his marvelous biography of Bobby Jones. This is the first Jones bio I have encountered that looks beyond the championships and The Slam to look at what Bobby went through to acheive such feats. It was especially interesting to see that the Grand Slam was not a series of dominating peformances, and that on at least one occasion (to paraphrase the Duke of Wellington) it was a damn close run thing. 1 stars (What a Crock) - Absolutely the worst. 2/3 of the "MINI SIZE BOOK" is devoted to the subject that no one teaches TEMPO. No kidding. The other third is back to basics with the triangle take away of hands arms and shoulder-- TEMPO? and then a CD that makes you swing as if you were on speed with beep, beep, beep, sounds. What a waste of money. 5 stars (Tour Tempo helped my game) - It is well researched and easy to grasp the concept. I downloaded the CD (comes with the book) to my iPod and took it to the range, and listened in the car on the way. The tempo feels fast on the backswing, but I believe that is the key. Less time spent on the backswing forces me to take the club back on plane with less extraneous hip/knee/elbow/wrist movement. e.g. Less to go wrong. I am a 16 handicap. I normally hit my 7 iron about 155 yards, but today I hit my 7 iron 175 yards, over the back of the green. It took me a few holes to dial in my yardages, but by the end of the round I had it going and was 1 over for the final 6 holes. Are you ready to strike the ball more consistently and get yardages like what we see from the PGA pros?? Then buy Tour Tempo, it is the real deal. 5 stars (This is a univeral truth) - The "tempo" is real. Hundreds of touring pros have been measured, "timed", and they are all one of three to four swing tempos...we're talking parts of seconds here. Almost all amateurs swing too slow...learn the "tour tempo" that fits you and you will hit the ball longer and straighter and more constently....PERIOD. ... 4 stars (It's All About Clarity, Confidence and Tempo) - A very quick read with lots of great tips. Especially good to clear the mind of unproductive thinking on the course and to play with clarity, confidence and purpose. The idea of Center of Gravity can save strokes right away. You'll understand the book even better when go to the range and experience how a good shot feels and then start hitting them one after another, and another... 5 stars (Zen Golf: Mastering the Mental Game) - Joseph Parent truly succeeds in integrating what he has learned from his Zen teachers and teachings with one's round of golf. His book is a must for all golfers, beginners and experts alike, duffers and long hitters. Points that Parent makes including breathing, putting beyond the cup, and not hitting "anyways shots" will truly improve one's round of golf. It will also impact a reader's attitude toward hitting the ball... from approach to follow-through, from driving to putting. Zen Golf is a great book and the unabridged book on CD is a must for travelers. The book has my highest recommendation. 4 stars (Just what I needed) - I recommend this book for the player that has plateaued and is frustrated on the course more than they are elated. I am having more fun on the course (and playing better) with the concepts learned in Zen Golf. When you complete the book, you may say to yourself- nice light read. 5 stars (The Six Spoke Approach to Golf by Tom Patri and Julie Moran) - One of the best instruction books to come along in years; the approach is simple, pragmatic, noncompromising and effective. From getting your body in golf shape to picking out the right equipment to keeping your mind in the present moment when on the course, Patri and Moran hit all the right notes. This is a must have if one is serious about improving all aspects of one's golf game. 5 stars (An all round golf coaching manual) - This book is the first coaching manual, I've seen, that covers the non-technical, as well as the technical, aspects of the game. Tom has such a common sense approach, and it is such a fun read, that I found it very easy to put it all into practice. And guess what, not only did my golf game improve, but my enjoyment of the game is back. 5 stars (Information overload) - How much to you think you know about putting? Read greens, roll the ball at the hole, etc.. Guess what? You probably don't know the half of it. Pelz is a scientist. While his book is written to be easy to read, he does not hold back. All his data and ideas are here. He discusses everything from the miriad variety of putting strokes, to the 15 facets of the putting game he has derived. To be clear, this book is pretty heavy reading. However, his focus is not on convincing the reader of this "super technique", nor does he fill pages up with tips. He goes through and presents his data, makes conclusions regarding it, and recommends certain methods. While he doesn't force any one method on the reader, he goes to great lengths to convince you. Maybe you like your door-hinge putting arc. Fine. But why is that not as good as a pendulum-type motion (which he recommends)? He explains, not from conjecture or "years of teaching experience", but with simple scientific data and common sense. Unless you have read his other books, you most likely haven't encountered a book of golf instruction like this. It may not settle well with many readers, but if you give it a chance it will help you out. Keep in mind too that the goal he sets is not to give your stroke a quick fix with a tip. He is out to give you a stroke you will be able to use anytime, anywhere, from the time you master it until you hang your putter up for the last time. That means that there is no quick route: you need to practice. He is blunt enough to even come out and say that to groove a putting stroke requires around 20,000 repetitions. A hard truth to face, but I'd rather work towards that and develop a good permanent stroke rather than creating a patchwork stroke that breaks down every week. 5 stars (the best book you can buy to improve your putting) - an easy to read book. it explains to the core the "art" of putting. VERY WELL DONE. 5 stars (This is a must!) - My golf game has been transformed by this CD. What is so valuable is the perspective he offers on the mental side of the game. The biggest help i got from another of rotellas books directly with putting and as a result i have never seen so many birdies in a round due directly to the said two books. 5 stars (Life improvement) - If you want to play better golf using your head then this book will do it for you. There is no way your golf woud not improve after applying Bob Rotella's techniques and advice. Better still, try applying these disciplines to your personal life outside of golf, I was inspired by the very first chapter to make changes to the way we live our personal life, setting targets, taking the knocks along with the successes and turning every opportunity into a positive. 5 stars (Lighthouse Turn Eliminates Paralysis By Analysis) - For 13 years, I struggled with every "swing thought" imaginable. Finally I had this book recommended to me as a very simple way to train your swing. More importantly, it was one you could practice without having to hit balls initially. Its critical points have helped ease tension and facilitates a smooth weight shift and now I am swinging through the ball rather than hitting at the ball. Golf is more enjoyable and I only wish I had this book 12 years ago. 5 stars (Highly Recommended!) - I have been golfing for about 1 year. As a beginner this book helped me immensely! Don't expect to just read through it and improve though. I would suggest holding off on the driving range while you dedicate yourself to doing the exercises he suggests over & over again until you know exactly what you should be "feeling" during the exercises (weight transfer, are your elbows where they are supposed to be etc....) This book suggests that you should not be trying to hit the ball but rather teaching your body to swing the club the exact same way every time which obviously builds consistency (something we could all use more of) It is a very quick read but don't read it too fast. Let the concepts sink in by reading important points several times. 5 stars (A good swing after 25 years!) - I have been trying to play golf for 25 years, managed to join a club for a couple of years and played every week. I always had one major problem that really took the fun out of the game - I would often top or fluff the ball, even when my game was going relatively well. At the start of this year I hit a 117, I was so embarrassed, it was either give up or make a change, I bought this book. I have had numerous lessons and not one of them spotted that I was starting my downswing with my arms - a fatal flaw. 3 stars (Good book on golf but not a manual on golf swing) - If you are looking for a good book on golf in general, this may fit your bill. If you are looking for specific tips on the golf swing, you may be disappointed. There are some thoughts on the swing, but not as much as you would expect from a book that has got so many great reviews. I suppose this is the kind of book that you will re-read and appreciate more and more over the years. From the book, you will get a feel for how good a teacher Penick was and how a coach should tailor his teachings according to the student. All those who never had the opportunity to learn from a great teacher but wanted to have a second-hand experience at least through his book, may come away a little disappointed since this is not a substitute for a lesson. 4 stars (Great Tips, not for someone looking for swing fundamentals) - I enjoyed the book, it had some great tips. But it's not for a beginner looking for swing fundamentals, instead try Ben Hogan's 5 lessons. Still worth reading though. 5 stars (A Common-Sense Classic) - This little collection of wisdom from Harvey Penick has become the best selling sports book of all time. Which just goes to show you, when it comes to golf instruction, less really is more. Penick proves you don't need stop-action photography and a lot of technical nonsense to have a great golf book. His simple observations are far more valuable. Even when Penick is addressing a complex mechanical issue, such as the position of the right elbow, he uses language and images that everyone can understand. His entire approach to the mental game is summed up in two pages on "positive thinking," and his advice on putting is priceless. 5 stars (An Absolute Must have for all....) - This book has worked wonders for my game. I have studied it from end to end. My game prior to this book was a patchwork of misinformation. Even at a 10 handicap (hit my limit) the concepts were so simple that I reduced my handicap to a 1 as a direct result of this book. I don't no why so many keep mentioning Hogan's book. Hogan's work did more to hurt more golfers then it helped! This is the book folks to learn the golf swing! If you enjoy reading about mechanics then do so but don't be surprised if your game does not improve or you hit the ceiling and don't progress any further! Drop the technical jargon and get back to doing whats right. You want to be a good golfer not a biomechanical engineer!Take it from a duffer who after 3 years reached a single diget handicap! My only regret is not coming across this book when I started out!!!! Duffers & Pro's take heed....let Manuel show you the way! Also a big Thank You to Mr. Torre your work made all the diffrence in my game and how I approach it! Also the book "The Sweetest Game" confirms Manuel's theories! You maybe a little surprised how many greats in golf unknowingly used this approach to golf! 5 stars (Follow the Club head) - I have about 30 golf instruction books. Of those, I found Hogan's Five lessons (Modern Fundamentals of Golf) to be the standard I adhered to. But my game hit a plateau and just remained there. Then I read Ernest Jones' Sing the Clubhead (wow!). I found out that Manuel De La Torre taught Jones' method with a few minor adjustments. Bought " Understanding the Golf Swing " book & DVD. It's amazing I just swing the club and strike the ball without worrying about the mechanics of the swing. It's now my golf bible, knocking strokes off my game evey time I play.
