5 stars (SQL Server 2000) - Price was excellent and product was in stock. Used expedited shipping and received my boxed product very quickly. All instruction manuals, codes, etc. in tact. 5 stars (Really worth the money) - I have been fighting with "FREE" tools, and this is the best $44 dollar investment I could have made. It makes working with the (MSDE) Microsoft Desktop SQL Engine very quick. 5 stars (SQL does work on Windows XP) - This Devloper edition is running great on my Windows XP machine with SP2. I have no problems at all with it. It is feature rich and is restircted to a testing enviroment as opposed to a produciton enviroment. Well worth the money! If you need free, Microsoft has other SQL alternatives such as MSDE SQL desktop engine and a downloadble fully functional SQL Express 2005 verison of CTP (community Technology Preview) So many reasons to convert from Sybase there is not room here to list them. ... 5 stars (The Best Database Management System Money Can Buy) - Don't take my word for it, I'm biased. Check out the independent performance and price/performance figures at the Transaction Processing Council's site, www.tpc.org. SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition simply blows the competition out of the water. For both performance and price, no other solution makes business or technical sense on the Windows platform. I've used this product in production and development since the beta 1 release (that's how stable it is, even then) back in mid-December 1999, and I can only say that it is reliable, very, very fast, highly scalable and easy to administer. Plus, independent productivity assessments have shown it is 3-4 times faster to get something done in SQL Server than it's nearest rival. That's a lot of consultancy bills saved! I've been a Senior DBA/Software Project Manager for seven years now, and I'd not even consider another relational database system now, because nothing gets even close. A mature product which gets better with every release. Recommended. 5 stars (OLAP functions rock) - The data mining is really cool for data warehousing. No one else has this stuff right now. 1 stars (terrible) - this product is terrible. the studio graphical tools are very poor and smp support is not so good. ... 3 stars (Small Upgrades, Some Issues) - There are some important additions, such as clustering and failover support, and a few niceties like user-defined functions and indexed views. Upgrading the data format from 7 to 8 was seamless, but replication was painful. Gone are the Enterprise Manager HTML-based pages at the machine level, replaced by a small maze of things to do to make replication happen. We finally had to reinstall the server to make replication happy. The help file on this topic is a joke. It reads something like "Step 1, configure replication. Step 2, start it up." with absolutely no detail. My bottom line: take your time in upgrading. 5 stars (Modern, Fast, Smart, Stable) - Each time i did something on this new release of SQL Server within some first weeks i was saying two phrases: "Wow! How can i live without this cool thing?" and "It's should be done erlier! It's so simple!". Thousands of new features, improvements. Now i will go home, because i do my work faster than i could think. 5 stars (Modern, Fast, Smart, Stable) - Each time i did something on this new release of SQL Server within some first weeks i was saying two phrases: "Wow! 1 stars (Not Worth One Star) - Worst book of all time, sorry guys and gals but whoever wrote and edited this book should buy a book themselves "Learn to Write and Edit by DUMMIES". To many typo's and script errors which did not work! Actually I would give the book a 5 star rating if they changed the name to Trouble Shooting Script Errors, Test Your Skills! 5 stars (Great beginner's book) - This is a great book for beginners. It covers everything you will need to start out and it's written very well - very easy to understand. The appendeces at the end are also wonderful, they cover php functions, mysql data types, etc. Also very helpful is the fact that you can access help forums that are specific to this book as well as downloadable files for every project in the book. I have several other php books and this is by far the best: the easiest to understand, the most comprehensive. 5 stars (Easy to Understand) - I was forced into the world of PHP, MySQL and Apache by my boss, and I wasn't sure which book to get. I chose this book and I thought it was great! I did see a few typos, but in a way it made me actually learn the stuff, instead of blindly typing away and hoping the programs worked. I understood what they were doing and it has made me catch my own mistakes too. For someone who didn't really know what they were doing, I feel like an expert now! And it was nice to have useable applications when I was done- we are actively using several of these now (such as the emailing script and the user/login script- and we have plans to do more). My boss thinks I'm a genius. I was reading these other reviews and while I can't speak for other books, I had no problems with deprecated code (I never saw that "mysql_create_db" function once in the whole book and I've been through most of it already) or the missing sql script from chapter 6 (it was the same database used in chapters 3, 4, & 5.. duh!) so I don't know what's up with these other guys. But oh well to each his own. ...
