Presenting With Pizzazz

2 stars (Very basic stuff and NO PIZAZZ at all...) - I was very disappointed with this book. I am a speaker and this book will not help me much. The basic message of the book: the audience must be involved so it learns. No kidding!? This book was "presenting with pizazz" and NOT "tricks to become a better trainer"!!! The title is completely misleading, since I didn't learn how to add any creativity, showbiz or "pizazz" to my presentations! In fact, being known for my surprising presentations, I will really think about writing this book myself, as it was meant to be. I do not recommend this book since it contains only minimal content. 4 stars (Great Tips!) - Almost every book on presentation commanded at least a few hundred pages of text, so you could imagine my sceptism when I bought this book. I am glad to say that I have not regretted this purchase. :) You realise that this book is a no-nonsense, straight to the point tip book, the moment you flip to the content page. The elaborations are concise and punchy. You don't have to mull through numerous pages of boring academia but you get very useful tips. Sharon Bowman is quite obviously an old hand at training. What I also loved were the punchy and witty little words of wisdom that Sharon Bowman boxed up in various parts of the book. It made lots of common sense when you read them, and of course, served to tickle your funny bones. My only reservation about this book is that while the tips are great, its suggested games/pair shares do not seem very useful for most situations - to some extent, these pair shares can seem rather common and boring. Nevertheless, I would take this with a pinch of salt, and rather use these suggested games/pair shares not as the hard and fast model answers, nor as templates, but more as suggested examples. 4 stars (Good copy) - I know that this is a teacher's edition but I presumed that because it was, it would have come with the DVD which is included in the student's addition. Other wise the book is exactly the same as the student's edition and was sealed as stated. I used it for a college class on public speaking, and I would have been lost without it. It covers things that you always forget to include, and great hints on how to increase your confidence and persuade an audience. Mastering Public Speaking- Fifth Edition

1 stars (Disappointing) - I'd considered buying this book from Amazon, and decided to first examine a copy at the Boston Public Library. I was unimpressed. The tone seems aimed at middle-school students, and the text is littered with patronizing "Dick & Jane" anecdotes. A quick glance through the table of contents suggests that Grice and Skinner address nearly every conceivable aspect of public speaking -- but a closer examination reveals a complete lack of depth. It seems as if they simply brainstormed ways to add pages without actually investigating their subject. The most derelict example I found was the second chapter, devoted entirely to a discussion of ethics. This chapter includes a section on plagiarism, where Grice and Skinner define plagiarism and warn students that getting caught may result in failing a class or being expelled from school -- hardly the sort of information you'd expect from a college-level textbook. Meanwhile, Grice and Skinner lazily sidestep the most challenging issue -- the employment of speechwriters -- by confining its mention to a brief, rhetorical question among the chapter-end exercises. In other words: "Here's a complex issue. We've exhausted our space with rudimentary ones, but we encourage you to do some real work on your own!" There are some informative, useful books on public speaking. Richard Dowis and James Humes have each written excellent books on crafting and delivering a speech. Virgil Anderson and Ann Utterback have written valuable books on training your voice, and Livingston Taylor and Keith Johnstone have written classics on stage performance. My suggestion is to skip this book. I was thoroughly disappointed with its lack of ambition, and I'd hate to be stuck with a professor who found it respectable. ...

5 stars (FINALLY, Someone who can teach public speaking!) - As a college instructor of oral communication for ten years, I complained bitterly about the poor selection of books for beginning students--until now. This is the single best book of its kind on the market, bar none. In all my years, I've never had students brag on a book like this one: easy to read, well-organized, thoughtful, practical, visually attractive, and substantive. My best compliment is that I can teach three times the material in half the time just by using this text--and people understand it! I can't brag enough on the author's work. This is phenomenal. ANYONE who wants to master the basics of public speaking should read this cover to cover. The principles and techniques Mr. Gregory describes are effective, powerful, and described in a simple way. The Confident Presenter- A Handbook for Beginning Speakers

5 stars (Excellent help for any type of speech) - I was in a mad panic to get my thesis defense speech written, and never taken any type of speech class, I thought I was hopeless. Fortunately for me, this book saved the day and I had a great presentation thanks to the content of it. It was so helpful that it was passed around the class for help. It is easy to follow and understand, and even easier to impliment. I highly recommend it for anyone who may need to speak in front of anyone else for practical or professional reasons. ...

Lucas' book was not only helpful in preparing me to deliver speeches of the utmost college level of thinking, but it also had great tools with the interactive cd's with videos of sample speeches and tips on how to make public speaking work for you. I admit: I was terrified of public speaking, but after taking the class and using Lucas' book, it has helped prepare me for a world full of public speaking and new found confidence in doing it! 5 stars (Say what?) - Students who use Lucas' book are presented not simply with an excellent text for preparation and delivery of speeches, but also with a website full of information, examples and tips. While this is intended for a classroom setting (the teacher's edition comes with a lot of supplements to help enhance the learning experience for the students), those who want to learn about the mechanics and processes of public speaking on their own would not be ill served by using this text. There are some signature features that make this a very good text for students, both independent and classroom based. The internet connection is but one, not only the website associated with the book, but also tips on using the vast resources of the internet wisely and efficiently. There is a strong coverage of ethics, to help students avoid the problems of plagiarism (intentional and inadvertent), as well as how to listen properly (without attaching personal agenda or false meaning to interpretation).
