Biological Psychology with CD-ROM and InfoTrac

4 stars (cells over systems) - I'm a biopsychologist. Kalat is a very good writer with a gift for explaining difficult concepts and for keeping technical issues interesting. I chose his Intro Psych book for my classes for just this reason. My response to this book is a little more mixed. Biopsychology ranges broadly from cellular to systems level research. This book does well at the former level. It gets a little more deeply into the biochemistry than I would prefer but does so well and is impressively up to date. It does less well at the systems level literature. For example, it defines two common imaging terms incorrectly: PET and rCBF (mixing them up with SPECT and PET respectively). Overall, I like the book and chose it for my biopsychology class but every instructor needs to choose based on their own needs for depth and for emphasis. 4 stars (as for textbooks.....) - as for textbooks for a biopsych class, this book is certainly interesting and the enhanced cd is definitely a plus. this book has not yet been used as a pillow for a sudden study break nap. the pictures are clear, the writing is friendly, and it's too bad that more texts can't be like this! 4 stars (Great textbook!) - I'm a freshman Psychology student at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands)... I used this book to study for my course Biological Psychology (duh!)... Anyway, this book is very organized, good summaries and a clear explanation of all the important concepts... Even if you don't have much knwoledge of biology, you will understand this book... at least I did... ...

Life-Span Human Development

4 stars ( Life-Span Human Development ) - I found the layout of this book very interesting in that it took a portion of the life-span and brought you from infancy to old age. In this way, the natural progression of life could be viewed for each topic. The alternative would be to start with infancy, then go to childhood, adolescence, etc. With the approach of this book, I found tracking each topie, e.g., "Perception," more interesting. 3 stars (Tired Read) - Very dry read. Complicated and confusing order of addressing topics. Reading for my developmental psych class felt like a chore with this book. 2 stars (Choppy, and incredibly dry) - I used this book with a human development course at my university, and it was less than adequate for the job. The book is incredibly bland, and while it goes through the life span in order, it seems to jump around from different people's theories too much. Better if all of Piaget's ideas were presented together for a certain topic, etc.. On top of that, I believe that the method of citing the sources, while it works for research papers, seemed out of place in this setting. Numbered footnotes would have worked better. The method of citation used made it seem choppy, as all of a sudden you'd see a last name and a year in the middle of the text. This could be done more effectively, because the current method definitely broke up the text significantly. Hopefully, some of these changes will be implemented in a future edition. ...

Family Therapy - An Overview with InfoTrac

3 stars (Family Therapy An (Humdrum) Overview) - This text is very dry reading. As a student, I had to force myself to read by promising myself rewards every ten pages (yes! I can go get a drink! Then ten more pages and then yes! I can call my mom!) And I am interested in the subject, and love to read. The information is good, detailed, etc. but the method is dry. In comparison, my counseling theories text was easy to read, informative, and interesting, and it didn't take self positive reinforcing to get me to read the whole thing. 5 stars (Fantastic Introduction to Family Therapy) - As a student of Family Therapy I am keenly aware of the need to have first-class resources that utilize proven techniques and that are theoretically sound. This text by the Goldenberg's, I have been told, is a veritable classic. I can see why. The book is very logical in its layout and construction, with the authors eschewing jargon and therapy-speak for clear, lucid, and cogent language. I have come to learn that there is a world of difference between individual therapy, and family therapy. The Goldenberg's make sure that this vital distinction is clear to the reader, and they do so without pedantry. I would recommend this book as a resource or as the primary text for any graduate level family therapy course. This book is so comprehensive that it can stand alone, or be used to supplement your studies. 4 stars (A classic text for intoduction to family therapy) - This is one of the oldest and most classic family therapy text. Many experienced counselors have benefited from previous editions of the book. I read it several years ago, and I am also the co-translator of the Chinese edition of this book (4th ed.). It took us a LOT of time in the translation process. Because the language is full of jargons and the sentences are very long. It's a bit difficult for non-English speaking people. However, it has some good points. First, it has almost everything a biginner needs to know about f...

Generation to Generation- Family Process in Church and Synagogue

5 stars (Read, and Your Ministry Will Never Be the Same) - This book has a reputation of revolutionizing the way its readers view congregational life. Based on his experience as a rabbi and marriage and family therapist, the late Ed Friedman gives the most comprehensive and practical understanding of congregations as emotional systems. Conflicts are explained not from a linear standpoint, i.e. "A causes B," but from a systemic perspective where all participants are contributors. Each part of the system is connected to, or has its own effect upon, every other part. This helps to explain why many "issues" that arise within a congregation cannot be settled on the level of content, but must be viewed as representations of how the persons surrounding the issues are participating in the relational system. "Issues" may seem settled, but if the relational system continues to function the same way, the same or other "issues" will reappear later, because they were merely symptomatic of the emotional dynamics among the people involved. This book begins by explaining the major concepts of family systems theory, and applies them to organizational life, leadership, and the leader's family. It is full of examples, which makes these complex ideas easier to grasp. Few books are as insightful and helpful in equipping church leaders to understand congregations. It is the standard in applying family systems theory to congregations. 5 stars (A MUST READ for all persons in positions of leadership) - "Generation to Generation" by Edwin Friedman is a groundbreaking book on the dynamics of organizational and religious leadership as seen through the lens of the multi-generational family systems model. In the book, Friedman uses case studies and examples drawn from his own leadership experience and uses them to illustrate how leadership can be understood and transformed by having an awareness of three major systems that directly affect organizational leadership: 1. the personal multi-genera...
