Algebra -amp- Trigonometry 7th Edition

1 stars (Never read it, but...) - I'll admit, I have never looked at this book, but Michael Sullivan's other Trigonometry book is very bad. No specific exampels, vauge explanations. If this book is anything like his old one, dont get it!!! 1 stars (Buyer Beware) - The information listed in the "Product Details" section for this book is very misleading. As noted in the other comments, this book is the paperback Student Solutions Manual. It is NOT a hardcover book and the ISBN number is not ISBN: 0130914657 (as listed in the product detail section). This book may prove to be helpful but it was not the book I thought I ordered. 4 stars (Very Good Precalculus Reference) - With the sixth edition of this textbook, Sullivan has made significant strides since the fifth edition of the College Algebra portion. The interval notations used to indicate the regions where the value of a function is increasing or decreasing is so much more clear and concise. In contrast to the former use of frequently displaying number lines with pluses and minuses underneath, in which the readings of them were perhaps more of an exercise for the eyes than for the mind, Sullivan revised this mess using parentheses and brackets to indicate test intervals. As a teacher, I say that this is not the most user-friendly book for an instructor who teaches one hour college algebra classes three times a week. Oftentimes, for me to quickly get the fundamentals across, I have to paraphrase what Sullivan lays out in many of the sections. The language is often too theoretical for several of my students (Many are in non-technical majors but have to complete college algebra as a last mathematics course requirement), and I have to put the symbolic logic sequences into terms that can cross over to applied mathematics. This is not meant to be a criticism, however. Perhaps the main weaknesses lie in the shortcomings of applied problems, particularly in the sections concerning maxima and minima, and especially in th...

Understanding the Old Testament Abridged 4th Edition

5 stars (Fleshes out the Bible) - No question the Old Testament is a great read, but face it, the original audience for this work is long dead and buried. Anderson's standard text on the world of the Old Testament is excellent in bringing the ancient world and the context for the collection that is the Old Testament to light. Reading the Bible without Anderson you get a story about some guy named Abram who took a walk one day and had some trouble with his new neighors. Reading it with Anderson, you get a deeper understanding of where Abraham came from, where he was headed, and how the belief of early Judahism developed through and in conflict with those of the neighboring Canaanites. The agrarian focused religion of the Canaanites get's it's own hearing as a people's attempt to make sense of the life around them. "Understanding the Old Testament" then provides this level of insight and background for all the other books of the Old Testament. How and why we now have the expression of the Jewish people's understanding of God gains more texuture and depth. 4 stars (Fascinating insights on ancient biblical events!) - An amazing, descriptive, objective, factual read about the beliefs, people and events that went on in ancient biblical times. Some great pictures too! I was captivated and fascinated! 3 stars (In depth survey following historico-critical methods) - Anderson uses easy to read sentences and aims his OT introduction at the lay person, but will be useful more to students and pastors because of the content. I was somewhat disappointed that he has nothing on Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). R.K. Harrison's Intro to the OT is much more comprehensive, including discussion using both historico-critical methodology and conservative approaches, whereas Anderson assumes that the historico-critical method is the only way to go. Nevertheless, the information is readily accessible and easy to read, and illustrated well. ...

Statistics for Business and Economics 9th Edition

4 stars (good book with good cases) - Very good text book with very useful and practical real cases, which make the boring theory interesting. I think it is very useful for my job and daily life. 4 stars (Effective text for students and anyone wanting to brush up) - This is a very readable and useable text for undergraduates, business students, and general readers who want to learn or brush-up on basic statistics. There is a tremendous amount of information in its 1200 pages, but it is well laid out, amply illustrated, with lots of practical work. The answers to the odd numbered questions are provided in the back to aid self-study. There are several appendices that provide important tables and the methods for calculating important statistical formulas. The index is also quite helpful. I think the book has a good balance of the technical with the practical. It is easy on the eyes and though statistics necessitates the use of a significant amount of math, it is well explained and never overwhelms the reader. ...

Beginning Algebra 4th Edition

4 stars (Great student text) - This book supports students by offering examples that are clear and easy to understand. I enjoyed using this text as it offered students the opportunity to successfully solve challenging exercises. Math textbooks are extremely difficult to read and interpret. Martin-Gay took her book to a level of simplicity that most math texts simply don't have. 1 stars (Daylight robbery) - I had to have this course for my general education credits at OSU and this book sold for 86.00 USED (I emphasize USED and you'll read why later). Today when book buy-back was open, I was informed that they weren't buying back the 3rd edition because a new one was coming out for fall, the 4th edition. I have just looked thru the book and THERE IS NOTHING DIFFERENT BUT THE COVER. For this they can stop buying the old books and sell the new one for 100.00 or more NEW?? This is ridiculous; students have no choice but to buy their books for their classess. Then they are told they can't sell them back or if they can, they get the rock bottom price. All because publishers have to sell the newest and best thing of the moment. Just because they change the cover doesn't mean it gives license to jack up prices. Get real!! 1 stars (waste of $ and time) - This book was the required book for my college class. It is nothing short of pure torture. Thank God my professor is excellent!! The examples in this book are very hard to interpret and the problems are not much good either. Also, the answers to the chapter problems in the back of the book contain only the odd-numbered problems. Good luck! ...

Biology - Life on Earth 7th Edition

2 stars (Book for high school, not worth the money) - This book goes into explaining Hardy-Weinberg principle and doesn't even have the equation for it! Nor does it mention two important words in the same chapter - dominant and recessive. If you want to look at pictures of animals and read over-simplified explanations then buy it. If your are looking for a scholarly book, then I would suggest to look elsewhere. 3 stars (Too much "fluff") - The major problem with this book is that there is so much unnecessary paragraphs which can just be said in a couple of sentences. This book is only good for those who have major trouble grasping the concepts and are in need of a mass amount of analogies and metaphors. If you are looking for a Biology book straight to the point, this is not for you; a better book is "Inquiry into Life" by Sylvia S. Mader. Once I read "Inquiry into Life," I found that "Biology: Life on Earth" was too drawn out. It is also not as detailed as I had expected it to be. 4 stars (An excellent introduction to biology!) - (Note: This review refers to the fifth edition of this book.) The authors of Biology: Life on Earth have written a beautiful, fairly comprehensive but not overwhelming introduction to the subject of biology. Although I have a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's in botany and found the book to be straightforward and clear, it is written so well and in such an engaging and conversational style that it should also be straightforward and clear to anyone who is new to biology. The colorful photographs and detailed diagrams add to the beauty of the book. I also like the feel of the pages. Many introductory biology books nowadays are quite heavy and bulky, and there is so much information in them that it is sometimes hard to get the "big picture." But this particular book is able to get the main aspects of biology conveyed in a more compact size. ( Some biology textbooks can be upwards of 1200 or more pages long, but this book gets...

Basic Business Statistics - Concepts and Applications and CD package 10th Edition

5 stars (This is one of the best business statistics book) - This book is used in the course of Business Statistics at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. This is a useful and understandable book. The questions are well-prepared.Also,the statistics program PhSTAT is given with this book. I advise you to buy. 2 stars (Good, but could be better) - This book is okay, but it could definitely be better. For a basic statistics class, this book contains WAY too much information to digest in a semester of college. No professor I know of has ever gotten past chapter 8. Further, the problems are quite wimpy as far as the amount of thought required for them. Quite wimpy. Could be better. The only good thing is that for doing it on a spreadsheet, the data comes on a CD, so that you don't have to re-type it, thankfully. ...

Calculus and Its Applications- 10th Edition

4 stars (Best for basics) - This is an excellent place to start - if you just started calculus, or need a thorough back-to-basics guide. Concepts are explained patiently and excellently unlike many others that cover the same basic concepts but rush through the 'why's and simply throw formulae at you. On the other hand, the book is kind of verbose and a slow starter. It may not be right if you are looking for a quick tour of the basics. But if you are willing to invest a little more time, it's well worth it. For me, the practical illustrations alongside each concept, were a big incentive and don't make you feel like you are just plowing through a math textbook. 4 stars (Good Text for Basic Calculus Concepts) - Contrary to what some other reviewer have claimed, I found this book quite helpful. It provides the basic concepts of Calculus such as limits and derivative rules and applications, exponents and logarithms, integrals, double variable calculus, trig functions, techniques of integrations, an introduction to differential equations, and even series. I found this book very easy to use. It presents the information in a very terse, straightforward manner. Basically, it cuts down on the mathematical theory and allows students to solve the important equations quick and easy. Instead of being lost in complicated definations of derivations, I was able to quickly find derivations and discover their uses in functions. This is the book that I used for my "Calculus for Social and Natural Science Majors" course. Personally, I feel that I learned much from this book. I never took a Calculus class in high school and wasn't the most mathematically inclinded so i was sure that Calculus was going to be tough. This book made it really easy to understand and somehow Calculus turned into one of my easiest classes. This book, however, is not for those who plan on taking higher level Calculus classes. It has most of the fundamentals, but not more advanced topics. Also, sever...

Applied Behavior Analysis for Teachers 7th Edition

2 stars (Late Shipping) - I used this company since it said that it will ship in 2 days. 14 business days later it finally arrived. When ordering school books with a due date, I will not use this company because it agrees to ship within 2 days. 3 stars (Regarding 7th Edition Only) - The 7th Edition is precisely what I find wrong with textbook publishing today. If you're a graduate student (or any student for that matter), you have probably noticed that new editions for textbooks are being released increasingly more frequently, rendering texts far less valuable for resale than they would ordinarily be. I went to the book store and found ABA for Teachers with both the 6th and 7th editions on the shelf. I was cynical about how much the book would have changed in roughly a year's time from one edition to the next, and sure enough, they are practically identical. It is almost humorous to note that the forewards of the two editions were not even modified. The paragraph on 'Updates' to the editions is the same, noting substantial changes to one chapter and the decision to retain a particular example about a mouse. I referred to the chapter in question, and it was the same in both books. By all appearances, the changes to the 7th edition (to my eyes) are all cosmetic and do not involve content. The 7th edition is almost one hundred pages shorter than the the previous edition, due it appears to the format being changed to more of a workbook-type, taller text. Also, the headings and sidenotes now have colored fonts in many instances. If having a taller, thinner text and colored fonts is worth the extra money to you, go ahead and shell out the extra money. Otherwise, don't let the book publishers get the last laugh and stick with the 6th edition which is in substance the same book. 5 stars (Great reference to understand the principles of ABA) - This book was the textbook which was prescribed for a graduate course that I took in Behavior Modification. It is an excellent ref...

Physical Geography - A Landscape Appreciation 8th Edition

2 stars (BUYERS BE AWARE 8th Edition Published) - Fall 2004 & Spring 2005 Students: the 8th edition of this book is published and comes with a CD, and, in some cases, a free world atlas. Check with your instructor for requirements. In any case, I wouldn't spend $100 for the 7th edition. Haven't read the book yet, so no rating. 4 stars (Very well-written and illustrated text with great photos) - Obviously written by authors who have a deep appreciation for this subject and a desire to pass on their knowledge, this text is useful not just for students of physical geography, but for anyone wanting a deeper understanding of geopolitics, area studies, anthropology, world history, etc. For example, I would have no clue about the culture, history and politics of Central Asia/Afghanistan and vicinity (my area of interest) without having a comprehensive understanding of the physical terrain and climate of this region--and how its inhabitants have adapted to it. I would not have gained this understanding without reading this text. My only complaint is that I had hoped for more emphasis on environmental issues. The authors may feel that this is beyond the scope of an introductory text; but problems such as the shrinking Aral Sea and tropical rainforest destruction are so widely catastrophic that I believe they deserve greater attention and understanding even at the introductory level. 5 stars (still on my bookshelf) - I remember this book from when I was an undergraduate, lo these many years ago (OK, so it was an earlier edition)! I'm glad to see it is still available and updated -- I enjoyed it then and I am using it now in answering the questions my children throw at me. This is an excellent resource book. I probably wouldn't pick it up as a light read at bedtime, but if you are interested in this topic you could do far worse than to get _Physical Geography_. ...

Applied Behavior Analysis

5 stars (Emergence of a true science) - Reading this textbook one can appreciate the science in the science of human behavior. Not that the science of human behavior isn't well-served by the philosophy of behaviorism or by ongoing research within the area of the experimental analysis of behavior. But what I saw in this book is just how much progress has been made in applications and how fully the scientific method has been utilized. " Applied Behavior Analysis " is well organized both as chapters and within chapters, so I was able to absorb the material in small chunks. There is an excellent summary presented as a numbered list (with subject headings) at the end of each chapter. Coverage seems thorough. As an introductory text, the whole kitchen sink has not been included but at 600 pages, plenty has been included. As fitting for an introduction, there are many fine definitions. In addition to the subject index and name index, a 3-page key term index is provided. Since I find myself getting confused at times by some usages of basic terms such as "contingency", "establishing operation" and "stimulus control", the care in defintion in this textbook was helpful. Only one section of the book wasn't of immediate interest to me: the use of graphs and baseline design in Part 3 (Evaluation and Analysis of Behavior Change). I simply read the summaries of each chapter for that part, but had no trouble following all the other parts despite skipping over the Part 3 material. Many parts such as Stimulus Control, Self Management, and a succint presentation of Schedules of Reinforcement were stimulating to read. In the midst of the book, I felt the excitement of realizing how well this field is advancing. Discussion of ethics and a concern for clients' rights are spread in several places in the book, e.g. in the sections on time out and punishment. More, perhaps collected into a chapter of its own, wouldn't have hurt. A "doctrine of least restrictive alternative" is advised...

General Chemistry 4th Edition

4 stars (Trades readability for depth and rigor) - This text is best suited for very good students who are motivated, comfortable reading English at a high level and mathematically adept: other students would be served much better by a different book. It contains far more material than could possibly be covered in a standard freshman general chemistry sequence, even with a good class. The authors assume that their audience is composed of the students I described initially (I am told it is the textbook at MIT), and leave it to the instructor to "break it down" for the students. Initially, I was not fond of this book, but I have slowly changed my mind, and I believe I have a better grasp of introductory chemistry thanks to the extra depth it goes to and the challenges it made me rise to. 2 stars (Could be much better) - It is because of textbooks such as this one that students lose interest in chemistry, and, worse, science in general. Yes, it is filled with LOTS of information, but there are many instances in which otherwise relatively simple concepts are twisted into something incomprehensible. In some cases, it seemed that the authors went out of their way to explain a topic in the most convoluted manner possible. Come on guys, chemistry is complex enough as it is, so rather than write a tome displaying how much YOU know about the topic, how about a more "student friendly" textbook that doesn't so readily confirm most people's suspicians that chemistry is as dry as saw dust. 5 stars (Excellent Intro Text) - This text was used in 1999-2000 at Oregon State University for the 100-level General Chem sequence for non-science majors. It is an excellent text with a (generally) friendly approach to introductory topics, and there are many nice photographs and discussion boxes containing info about practical chem applications. For some reason, the authors include a significant section on organic chemistry in chapter 2, far before they discuss bonding.... Other than th...

Chemistry for Changing Times- 10th Edition

5 stars (Great for understanding all that is "Chemistry") - Chemistry can be interesting and it can be difficult to understand. This book addresses both of these areas quite well. This is a book that you study from, as well as read. For anyone who is preparing to take a Chemistry class, this book is well worth investigating, because this book, in its 20 Chapters, covers every principle, formula, idea, and topic that will be covered in class. My CHEM 100 course used this as our text, and we covered only half of the book (at a Community College in Maryland). I learned a lot from the course and from this book. I heartedly recommend it! For grandmom to read on your drive to DisneyWorld???? Oh, maybe not. Especially if she's driving. 4 stars (Best of the liberal arts texts) - There are two people that would be interested in this book - those that are enrolled in a liberal arts chemistry course, and those that are just interested in learning about chemistry. This book suits either type of person admirably. While setting up a liberal arts course in chemistry (i.e., Chemistry for Non-science Majors), we previewed a number of possible texts. This one, in my mind, stood above all the others that I looked at. There are a number of reasons why: 1. The scope - this book covers a vast number of topics, from basic structure of the atom to environmental chemistry to toxins and drugs to combustion and energy. We are designing a survey course, and this spread is ideal. Other texts tended to focus too much, especially on environmental issues (e.g., the ACS's Chemistry in Context). 2. Descriptive, non-mathmatical. Since this course has no prerequisites, not even grade 10 math, we needed a book that minimised mathematics. Other books, such as Kelter/Carr/Scott's Chemistry: World of Choices, was too mathematical for this type of course. 3. The pictures - this book simply looks good. Thus, if you're looking for a text for a liberal arts chemistry course, or i...

Finite Mathematics and Its Applications

2 stars (I'm glad I'm the teacher and not the student!!!) - Wow. This book is bad. I have to use this book -- chosen by the department -- for a class I'm teaching. The fact that the book is a bad choice for this class is not the fault of the book -- I was given the text with instructions to teach chapters 1 - 4, 10, and 11, and then to use extra material for topics not covered in the book -- clearly, this text does not fit the class, and either the course should be redesigned, or a different text should be chosen. Anyway, a first glance was enough to see how miserably this book is organized. The first chapter covers: 1.1 Coordinate Systems and Graphs 1.2 Linear Inequalities 1.3 The Intersection Point of a Pair of Lines 1.4 The Slope of a Straight Line 1.5 The Method of Least Squares So, section 1.2 is dependent on 1.3 which is dependent on 1.4 -- isn't the order a bit backwards? And then in 1.5, you're on to a topic which is a huge leap in difficulty from learning how to plot a point on Cartesian coordinates from 1.1. Unbelievable. This type of interdependence carries on through all of the sections of the book that I've looked at (admittedly not all). It seems that one must already know the material from further ahead in the book in order to use the book to learn the material in the given chapter. I believe that by this Eighth Edition of the book, the authors should be removed from it -- it should be given to students using this text without already knowing it all, and let those students revise and edit the continuity of the material. Matrix notation is introduced, virtually without explanation of either how to use it or why. Examples are given that attempt to show how to perform some operations on a TI-83 (or similar) calculator, but these efforts fail miserably. Frankly, I'm having a hard time even figuring out what it is that this book is trying to teach -- and I already understand the material! If, however, the goal of the book is to confuse stud...
