The Zahir - A Novel of Obsession

1 stars (Narcissism ne plus ultra) - This guy is so self referential that I kept reading mostly from complete astonishment. I bought this because I had five minutes and twenty choices in an airport; why do other people do it? It is self indulgent navel gazing drivel. Mary 3 stars (Not my Coelho's favourate) - The Zahir did not mesmarize me like Coelho's other books. It is not that it is a bad book, not at all, but I just found it to be below my expectation from a book by Paulo Coelho. 5 stars (A FABULOUS FABULIST COMPELLINGLY READ) - British stage, film and TV actor Jamie Glover gives a sterling performance, immediately intriguing listeners with a mesmerizing story of obsession. Told in the first person by a nameless narrator, Glover ably carries us along on a journey, a search not only for a loved one but also perhaps for meaning, answers to the riddle of life. The narrator is a successful author living in Paris with his wife, Esther, who is an accomplished journalist, a war correspondent. She has just returned from Iraq only to disappear again. It's not known whether she ran away or was kidnaped, whether she is alive or dead. She was last seen with a man younger than she, a man who hid his true identity but was known as Mikhail. Could he be her lover? According to author Coelho the idea of the zahir stems from the Islamic tradition, it means "incapable of going unnoticed. It can refer to an object or a person, and that object or person gradually takes over our every thought, until we are unable to think of anything else. This could be considered a state of holiness or a state of madness." We'll leave it to the listener to decide which description is most appropriate for our narrator as he undertakes a journey to find Esther. He knows that she felt a deep unrest and was unsatisfied with her life, although he cannot comprehend why. He was stunned when she announced that she wanted to become a war correspondent, yet he also understood that h...

Merriam-Webster-s Spanish-English Dictionary

2 stars (Poorly designed screen functions) - Although this dictionary's contents are extensive, the screen functions are relics from the DOS era. They are laborious and clumsy. To find a word for difinition, it has to be spelled perfectly, there's no list of proximations to the word entered. Changing a word selection is also clumsy especially in the thesaurus when the cursor doesn't show up in the entry slot. If someone knows of a better software, I'd sure like to hear cause this thing sucks!! Maria McGowan 2 stars (Good basic reference, lousy interface.) - The definitions and thesaurus cross referencing are very good. The user interface is quite honestly shameful. Software companies got away with this years ago, but there are now accepted standards for windows user interfaces (e.g keyboard short cuts are missing). Integration with Word 2003 is weak. Numerous bugs and exceptions and very slow. 5 stars (Great product with a lot of features) - I had an old version of this software (2.0, I think), which requires Mac OS 9 or classic. This new version runs in native OS X. I agree with other reviewers: the interface is ugly, but it does the job. I like the audio capability. English is not my first language so I find the pronunciation feature indispensable (don't forget to install it; it's not included in the "easy" install option). Another great feature is the "Defining text contains" search. You can find a word by entering the words that are in the definition. What is the word that denotes the noise a duck makes? You can easily find that, of course, ducks "quack," not to mention that you will also find all kinds of ducks -- the blue-winged teal, the bufflehead, the eider -- and all sorts of duck relatives and even duck dishes. You can also find words that rhyme with duck: cluck, guck and many more. Other ways of searching include usage paragraph contains, forms a crossword, homophones, cryptograms and more. I don't understand why these features are not prominently ...

Eazyspeak Spanish Levels 1 and 2 PC - Mac

5 stars (Fun Fun Fun!!!) - This product is amazing. After learning my husband was taking me to Mexico for our 25th anniversary, I was nervous about going into a foreign country without knowing Spanish. This game is amazing. It is the fastest way to learn a language without long drawn out grammar explanations. Afterall, I just wanted to learn the basics, phrases for restaurants, banks, airports, shopping etc. This game was so much fun, you couldn't tear me or my husband off the computer. We kept wanting to play because learning was so much fun. The phrases I learned contributed to a much more enjoyable trip and now I have enrolled at the local community college to further my Spanish. This product is perfect for any one travelling and wanting to learn the phrases and colloquial expression fast. ...

Instant Immersion Spanish 5 CD-ROM Set

5 stars (Awesome....learning fast!!!) - My husband and I bought this item in hopes of being able to understand some of the locals in Mexico (we go there quite often). So far, we absolutely love this program! We've both learned more in one weekend of using the program than in the months we spent trying another program. I am currently on the second disc (out of 5) and he is nearing the end of disc one. We've also looked at disc 4 (the picture dictionary...a great disc!). We also downloaded the Spanish-English Dictionary bonus disc. I would buy this item again in a heartbeat! 1 stars (Beware, only Castillian spoken here) - This set is fine if you only want to learn Spanish in the Castillian accent. Castillian is a rare accent that you will encounter in certain areas of Spain. No Latin American countries use Castillian! You'd be better off with a different set of software if you truly want to learn the Spanish that most native speakers use. 5 stars (Very Helpful for Beginners) - Excellent in presentation, the only disappointment is that it is teaching the "th" sound that you find in Spain, not in Mexico, but all in all an excellent product. ...

Rosetta Stone Spanish Spain Levels I - II Personal Edition

4 stars (Good for the Technically Challenged ) - What I like about this software is that it does not come with too many "gadgets." At my age, I am "technically challenged." So this software worked out fine for me with my limited computer skills. I also like the fact that this software covers Castilian Spanish. It is probably the only course available that exclusively covers Castilian Spanish in such depth since Pimsleur and Learning Like Crazy only offer Latin American Spanish courses. The downside of this software is that you will not learn much Spanish grammar with it. If you want to learn the rules and mechanisms required to combine words and form sentences in Spanish, you will have to buy a good Spanish grammar book. For that I strongly recommend Spanish Grammar for Independent Learners by Avigail Azoulay, Arie Vicente. It is more expensive than other Spanish grammar books but it is well worth the money. ...

Educator-s Choice Middle School Excelerator Grades 7-10

5 stars (A good value for the money) - My daughter enjoyed this program. She learned a lot of different words. The animations are clever and she enjoyed completing the spaceship to get Quixel home. This is a good program to build a foreign language vocabulary. 1 stars (Beware!) - I thought this would be good for my students until I tried it out myself. First I tried the Italian. When I discovered that they translated "potato chips" as "microchips", I was surprised. In telling time, they expressed the correct feminine plural but displayed the incorrect masculine singular "il due" for 2:00. Now for the French...I learned that "potato chips" were "eclats" as in "paint chips". Wrong chips both times folks - and good luck in a restaurant! I stopped there. It's a shame they never got a native speaker to check it before releasing this as an educational item. They did get native speakers to read aloud the vocab lists however. That's the one-star part. ...

KidSpeak Spanish

3 stars (Good Introduction) - Our son is 6 and he LOVES this program. It is an inexpensive way to get your child to learn some basic Spanish. There is no English translation, however, so it helps if you know a little Spanish. 1 stars (This is a waste of good money! Don't buy it.) - I am extremely disappointed in this product. My chid is nine and found this so boring she didn't even want to play it; it didn't even pique my interest. We purchase a lot of educational software, and it ususally glues my child to the computer. Not this one! Also, the pronunciation is not clear. If you don't already know some Spanish, I don't think you would be able to understand it. The program then uses the "th" pronunciation as used in Spain, and not in the rest of the Latin countries of the world. Save your $20.00 for something better. ...

Instant Immersion Spanish 2 CD-ROM Set Jewel Case

5 stars (Great Starter) - This cd set is a very easy and fun way to get excited about and learn some basics about the Spanish language. It is easy and effective to use for just a few minutes at a time or a longer if you want. It does teach more than nouns. It has a section on phrases. I am now happy to learn more thanks to this cd. 5 stars (Wonderful! Wonderful!!) - Thank you so much. This Instant Immersion Spanish CD set is great. It is being used and used. Thanks again, Irene 2 stars (Only very basic instruction.) - This Spanish Language CD set is really very basic. It only teaches you words for things, and it never really explains itself very well. If you are looking to learn Spanish from scratch, this CD will not help very much. My mother was born in Panama. She is a native Spanish-speaker, and she is helping me to learn my Spanish now, and she has taught me alot of it. She explained to me that this CD teaches has a few mistakes in it, and furthermore, does not distinguish between the more proper forms of Spanish (like that spoken in Spain and Argentina). This CD does have some educational value to it, but it is only rudimentary. I would suggest (if at all possible) having a native Spanish-speaker around to point you in the right direction. If not, then you can still learn some things from it, but it won't help that much. ...

Instant Immersion 33 Languages

2 stars (It's not worth for REALLY learning the Language) - My dad got this for me because i like to learn languages. It was misleading for me what is says on the package "each disc a complete course". It is useful for you if you want to learn basic things like phrases for traveling but NOT if you REALLY want to learn the language. If want to learn basic travel things this WILL be for you. But if you want to REALLY Learn the language you better get the Instant Immersion Laguage course devoted to one language. From Paul Florida 4 stars (Instant maybe. Immersion questionable.) - My dad got this for me to supplement a Latin textbook I have been studying for my high school language course. It is quick and easily understandable. You get plenty of words and phrases, which is perfect for a traveler. If you want to learn the language for the sake of knowing it, not travel, however, you'd better get a book to supplement this. It doesn't teach about pluralization, verb conjugation, or other oddities that the language holds, such as, in Latin, the ending -m which implies a direct object. The Latin CD also does not use the dashes over the vowels, which may or may not be necessary, I don't know. Overall, I am very happy with the product and with the price of $39.99 (USD), but I am also quite glad I have my textbook (ECCE ROMANI) to go with it. 4 stars (Instant maybe. Instant Immersion Portuguese 2 CD-ROM Set Jewel Case

2 stars (No, No, No, and No) - I thought at first the first CD was good for beginners, It tought you basic words and they are easy to remeber. If you understand little of portuguese this would be good to refresh on but if you know portuguese I would say go with something else. It doesnt even teach you how to put sentences together like "And, But, The," or any other words. 2 stars (Can someone learn Portuguese with these programs?) - My answer is NO. I bought this 2 CD Set several weeks ago and each CD lasted me about 2 days. The first CD teaches you basic vocabulary. It has some games, but they are pretty lame and I got tired of it after a few games. Second one is a lot more advanced and focused on listening. If you know Spanish, or other romance language, the games will be too easy. In my case, I got most of questions right at first try, learning some new expressions and words. If you don't know romance languages...it will be too hard, since there is no explanation of grammar, what so ever. 2 stars (poor) - For a few days after I bought this CD, I could have fun because I had no knowledge on Portuguese. You can memorize little amount of basic words for sure. But as I progress, I realized that This 2 CD-ROM set lacked the most significant thing in learning a new language. It does not provide any grammar nor greeting frase such as "How are you?" and "I'm fine" Compared to the 1st CD, the 2nd CD was way too hard. There are so many words that had not been mentioned in the 1st CD. You'll never understand the 2nd CD even when you perfectly mastered the 1st CD. I'm studying Portuguese using other software and books. It has been a month, but I still can't understand the 2nd CD. ...

Learn to Speak French Deluxe Traveler-s Edition 2003

4 stars (Learn to Speak French worked for me) - I actually bought this product in Oct 2003. I knew I would be vacationing in Paris in May 2004. I worked through the programs one after the other for the past 6 months. Well, I went to Paris and was able to order in restaurants, buy things and converse at a basic level. The program works if you work at it. Where I think the program excels is in correct pronounciation. Hearing the people in the programs speak over and over and using the verbal dictionary helped me learn to pronounce correctly. The program includes a microphone and Fodors travel guide, along with a set of CDs and a VCR tape. The CD's contain the most important part of the program. Part of the focus of the program is to speak into the microphone and be graded on your speech quality. I think this is overrated and concentrated on pronouncing as the actors in the programs do. Also, as mentioned by another reviewer, the Fodors travel guide is a great reference tool if you actually plan to go to France. This program is well worth the money. Caution: It will not make you fluent. I don't think any program can achieve that. 1 stars (Unusable) - Learn to Speak French is a terrible product. The Learning Company says it can be used on Windows XP, but it just isn't true. It loaded well and seemed to run OK, but within 10 minutes it crashed the system because it used up all the resources. There seems to be a bug that doesn't allow resources to close when you leave an area. When I went to TLC home page to look for a bug fix I discovered that L to SF is supported over the web only and no support by e-mail or telephone is available. There is a fix to correct some problem with Win 2000 so, with nothing to lose, I downloaded it and attempted to install it. The first step was to go to the drive that had the L to SF CD in it. I did this and when I clicked OK it returned to the C drive. Nothing I tried would take me to the D drive. Maybe this works well on...

Instant Immersion Spanish Deluxe

5 stars (Best I Own) - I have purcchased about 4 Spanish language programs in the last year, and this is my favorite. Being immersed in the language, I found, was a much better way for me to learn. I spent 2 years in high school Spanish, but nothing compares to listening to someone speak Spanish in real time. Good product. A better way to learn 2 stars (Not for those who don't know the basics) - I am good with languages (fortunatly) but this software I would NOT recommend unless you're trying to brush up your already EXISTING skills. The Audio CD's were great though! I learned a lot from them. But they only give you 3 so you're cut off once you learn how to conjugate regular verbs and about three irregular verbs. 4 stars ( Instant Immersion Spanish Deluxe ) - I find this item to be a lot of fun to work with and it holds my interest. Things would move along much easier if it had only come with some sort of workbook. However, it was well worth the money spent, a very good buy. ...

Rosetta Stone Portuguese Level 1 - 2 Personal Edition

4 stars (Great, but one major flaw.) - This program, simply put, is great! The concept behind it is so simple, yet it so effective. The student can never get bored because there are always new drills, new phrases, new pictures, and new exercises. The only reason I gave this a four instead of a five was the price. (see my review on Pimsleur Portuguese). The program is good but it is far from complex. Anyone can make it; it is just a series of jpeg images and mp3 audio files put together. I seriously doubt this product's price should be this high. Many great students eager to learn the beautiful language called Portuguese may be drawn away from this great program simply because of the price. This is why I think this program should be much cheaper than advertised. After all, it's a language progam, not an engineer's development tool. Portuguese can be a hard language at first, but this progam can help even the most linguistically challenged student achieve his or her goal of learning a foreign language. I sure did! 5 stars (Thanks Rosetta Stone) - This program is amazing! I've had it for only a couple years and although I'm only on the first couple lessons of Level I Unit 2 of Brazilian Portuguese on an on/off basis, so wonderful is this course in it's ability to reach me it doesn't matter that I'm not drilling myself constantly. I can get away from it for a while, get back to it and remember because it uses picture association which is more effective than just reading text. I've discovered to my ecastacy that I'm actually starting to think in the language exclusively. Unlike other langauge courses I've taken it's laboriously confusing to be expected to translate because of the tendency to think in your own language first, comparing, then putting things together back into the foreign language. With this course I can now look at a picture that says "the girl has black hair" and having learned all the words in Portugese, I'm not thinking in English to begin w...

Rosetta Stone Spanish Personal Edition Level 1 Latin America

2 stars (It may be effective for some, but it is not the program for me) - Rosetta Stone was the first Spanish language program that I had tried. (I have previously studied French, Latin, and ancient Greek.) I ordered it from the company directly but returned it after about a month. It has some interesting unique features but it was not for me. Here are the positives: 1. The pictures are colorful and memorable and will help you learn many words quickly. 2. There is an interesting effective feature which allows you to listen to a word or phrase in Spanish, record your voice, and playback. Then a scale tells you how close your voice came to that of a native speaker. But I would not spend extensive time repeating the same word or phrase because it is very difficult to meet their standard for "native speaker." These are the negatives: 1. There is a great emphasis on sentences that are not practical for an adult tourist, business person, or employee wanting to speak Spanish with native speakers. In addition, most of the sentences have verbs in the present progressive tense; there is not enough practice in all the Spanish verb tenses. There are many sentences in Spanish about boys under the table, girls walking, women waving, and men falling. 2. Because I work at a computer all day at work, I am not motiviated to sit at a computer for long during my spare time. Because I am eager to learn useful Spanish quickly, Pimsleur is more effective for me. I can listen to the CDs in my car or at home. In addition, I have learned more sentences that I may want to use such as how to find a bathroom, restaurant, or pharmacy; or how to order food. Rosetta Stone may be a good program for a child who likes to use the computer or an individual who has never studied Romance languages before. 5 stars (rosetta stone spanish) - this program is wonderfull for anyone that want to learn any spanish.I seen many other programs but by far this is the best.it cost more b...

Rosetta Stone Spanish Level 1 - 2 Personal Edition Latin America

5 stars (The Best Way I've Found!) - I cannot say enough about this program. You don't even have to try to start learning. Lessons fly by and once I've learned a word, I think about it automatically, instead of trying to make associations with how the word sounds or something. (Example: instead of thinking "Rice... think of an arrow going into a bowl of rice... oh, yeah, Arroz" - I just see rice and think arroz. I'm not translating from English to Spanish, I'm thinking in Spanish. When I had to take Spanish classes (required for classroom credit) I found that not only did the little I had done in Rosetta Stone helped me excel, but that my pronunciation was unbeatable because I had been constantly using the Rosetta Stone program. While other students struggled to put together sentences, I said sentences almost as quickly as if I were speaking in English, because this program does that - It Helps You THINK in Spanish! This is not because I am any smarter than anyone else; historically in classes I have been an unremarkable student. I personally didn't use the voice recognition part as much, but it also helped. It wasn't as much that I was exactly copying the voice as it was the fact that I could hear how it was supposed to be pronounced and compare it to my own recording. You can get through each lesson very quickly, so there isn't really much reason to get bored with it. There is also, fortunately, some review, but not so much that it is overkill. Obviously you can spend as much or as little time as you want on each lesson. I've been in languages classes and programs (and hated them) for years, and this is the first effective way I have learned to speak a foreign language. I plan to continue in Spanish, and eventually work my way into other languages using Rosetta Stone. 2 stars (Rosetta Stone may be effective for some but it is not the program for me) - Rosetta Stone was the first Spanish language program that I had tried. (I have previously studi...
