5 stars (Excellent - as long as you have a reasonably recent PC) - I've been using Pinnacle for a couple years. This software is outstanding. Extremely powerful, yet reasonably intuitive to use. After learning a few basics, you're off and running to create powerful effects -- from corporate videos to very cool home videos. Good points: - Imports video nicely from dv camera - Breaks video up into scenes automatically for you - Easy drag, drop, cut, etc. to get just what you want into the timeline - Easy to modify the volume on the soundtrack and to add a music track and/or voiceover - Very powerful transitions -- the cool things you insert between segments of the video to make people say "wow, cool, how'd you do that"... you just drop them between scenes in your timeline and it does the rest - Preview without rendering time - If you want to dig deeper, you can -- title tools, transition effects can be highly customized, panning photos, etc. Drawbacks: - It's not a super high end product at this price -- there's only a couple audio tracks for instance. - I've had trouble with it on older hardware (more than a couple years). When you have hardware conflicts, it is terrible. It seems to randomly freeze and hang your machine, you lose your work, etc. It's awful. That probably accounts for most of the negative reviews. However, if your hardware will run it you will love this and be a great video editor in no time. 4 stars (Nice product. Off and running in a matter of minutes) - I purchsed Studio Version 9.3.9. Had no problems installing or running on my Dell Desktop or Laptop. Found program easy to use, importing video worked great (wish preview window defaulted to slightly larger size), Moving and trimming clips was easy, splitting clips was easy after viewing help file. Put togtethe 3 video tapes, edited clips and readied for burning DVD in a matter of about 5 hours (2.5 hrs importing and about the same editing/ setting up menu). Would recommend to othe... 5 stars (Great Home Editing Software) - Media Suite is a great sowtware combo! It's includes four discs and two manuals Pinnacle Suite: You can do just about anything a home editor needs to do using this suite. (I would not recomend it porfessionally) The green screen effect is good but hard to perfect it so you cant tell there was a differant color there first. All the effects are great. You get large variety of them in this pack. Though there are still houndreds of dollars wirth of eother effect, songs, special effects, etc. That you have to buy seprantly. The controls are very compliated it took me about two weeks of playnig around with the program until i felt truly comfortable using it. Steinberg Wavelab: This program has a very small amount of features but what it does have is complicated. Your can record audio as long as you like and then add aprox. 3 effects choosing from a list of 20. It very easy to take out or add in parts of audio (edit) Corel Photobook: Have have only used this ounce but from what ican see see you can do simple edits on pictures. The tools are much like those of the microsoft programs. Pinnacle Instant Copy, Pinnacle DVD Recorder: I have used neither of these. 1 stars (Software HodgePodge that never works as advertised) - If you want to spend time creating videos this is not the product for you. There is a reason that they are on Version 9, 8 previous poor products and counting. Installation crashes are normal and product support people know nothing about the product. Every upgrade (you pay for) introduces new problems or takes away previous capability and applying their patches are risky at best. Don't buy it!!!!! 1 stars (Do not spend your money for this Software) - This software has serious memory problems. It can not run smoothly and froze my computer on a regular basis. If you buy, you have to spend time for rebooting your computer. ... 3 stars (Video editing is not as simple as it looks like.) - Video editing is a little more complex than one thinks. Video and audio will go out of sync no matter what software you will use. What happens is that quartz clock on sound card fluctuates in frequency. More expensive sound cards are more expensive for a reason. Those sound cards have better components and sync problem is minimized (not eliminated) resulting in smaller audio video sync problem. One can notice audio sampling rate fluctuations when capturing video in great program called virtualdub (virtualdub.org). It happens to be free. Using sampling rates when capturing video is also important. My sound card works better using 48kHz than 44.1kHz sampling rate. Operating System is important too. Windows 98SE (I assume the same applies to ME) is not suited well for video capture because audio video sync problems were the worst by far. Same hardware, same applications running on Windows 2000 rendered much better results. XP behaves as well as W2K. If this is just driver issue or not - this is another issue, which I cannot confirm. I am leaning though on opinion that OS made such a difference. Win98SE(ME) is not true operating system such as Linux, Unix, Windows 2000/XP/NT (computer science graduates will agree with me knowing those OS internals - I am talking about kernel here). Solution: Don't capture video in huge chunks. I usually record maximum 20 minutes. I stop capturing when new scene starts. I rewind a little bit before this scene and start capturing (this will result in seperate capture file). I also prefer using NTFS file system (2000,XP), which allows me to have huge capture files (larger than 4GBs). I compress using Huffyuv codec (almost lossless compression). It shrinks file size by 2.2 factor. Capturing 720x480 without compression will bring any HD to its knees resulting in dropped frames. Defragmenting HD is also important before capturing. I have devoted partition for video capturing. ... Pinnacle Systems :: Editing :: Video :: Computer software (programs) :: Video Capture Device (Devices) :: :: Pinnacle Studio 9 AV-DV
1 stars (I will never buy Pinnacle again) - This product never worked OK. I tried all patches / updates. Stay away from Pinnacle products!!! 1 stars (Dazzle DVC-120 F.O.D.) - This is a piece of FOD (Foreign Object Debris--destroys jet engines) installation was heinous and never worked even after the 67MB patch download. DON'T BUY IT!!!! AMAZON...LOSE IT! 1 stars (Terrible product) - This product died on me 2 months after I purchased it. I called tech support 3 times in which I waited up to 55 minutes then gave up. 3 stars (Does what it says, but...) - As a TV tuner it functions OK. It isn't anything spectacular, but when one considers the comparatively high resolutions that computer monitors produce (as opposed to traditional PAL/NTSC televisions) the quality is rather good. A previous reviewer claimed that the A/V inputs were not functional. That is absolutely false. I currently have my Xbox plugged into it and am playing it windowed on my PC. My complaints are that 1) There is a video lag with the inputs, 2) The provided software is sketchy at best, and 3) Pinncale demands extra money to 'unlock' different encoding methods, (i.e. Mpeg-2, Mpeg-4, VCD, etc.) In short, it does what it says, but that is about it. 1 stars (It's only a TV port, NOT a capture device - BEWARE!!) - If I could give it NO stars I would. IT'S A RIP-OFF!! Those reviewers who found this product OK are only using it as a TV device, not for external video capture. Sure, it works adequately as a TV device (so the one star is probably justified after all) but it is emphatically NOT a video capture port as supplied. Pinnacle's own bundled software does NOT support video input (neither for live display nor for capture) via the temptingly-annotated Composite or S-Video ports. It only 'sees' inputs on the UHF (TV) antenna input. Pinnacle have been promising to include this functionality for over 6 months but, so far, NADA!! Of course, the only way you can get to see the deluge of negative feedback this generates is to purchase the product to gain access to the support forums. The public aren't allowed in... Here's kicker #1 - if you're prepared to spend the same money again Pinnacle will sell you their Studio 9 application which (I THINK) supports these external (non-TV) video inputs. Now for kicker #2 - alternatively you can buy (again for a comparable ADDITIONAL cost) a third-party app called ShowShifter which has absolutely no problem seeing, displaying and capturing the extra inputs in this Pinnacle-... 1 stars (MOST FRUSTRATING AND TIME CONSUMING PROGRAM EVER INVENTED!!!) - I have been editing video since 1998, and have tried every Video editing product under the sun,,and I really enjoy making short movies, of family outings, weddings, etc...But using this software, is a nightmare!!! My blood pressure goes up everytime I use it. I can be in the middle of editing an important clip, and crash, I get bumped off and loose all of my hard work!!!! I start to think they do this on purpose... because when I call them up, they tell me, "gee:... I have never heard of this happening", in their lying voices, but from what I can see, numerous events like mine are reported here. It is a TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY, and they would have to pay ME to use it!!! In fact, they are coming out with Version 10 in October, in a few weeks, so that is why all the Pinnacle 9 products are on sale. They are trying to get rid of them, so they can introduce into the market, another nail biting, anxiety producing program, that will only stifle ones creativity they had before they use this PINNACLE.....I shall call it,, THE PINNACLE OF SHAME. I GIVE PINNACLE and their method of buying transitions, and activation codes, plus their customer support a (-10) NEGATIVE 10, taken to the 10th power!!!!! THEY WOULD BE LUCKY IF I GAVE THEM ONE POINT OF A STAR! I WILL STAY AWAY FROM PINNACLE....FAR FAR AWAY......IF YOU WANT TO COMMENT AND LET ME KNOW, THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE EXPERIENCING "GROSS STIFLEMENT TO MY CREATIVITY" FROM THE GRIEF OF PINNACLE,,,PLEASE DROP ME A LINE! ALSO I AM ALWAYS LOOKING FOR THE NEWEST VIDEO EDITING SOFTWARE THAT I CAN HAVE FUN WITH, EXPRESS MY CREATIVITY, AND OTHERS REALLY APPRECIATE MY WORK! 5 stars (One of the lucky ones) - This product and the stand alone software version have received a lot of flak in these reviews. I have not had any problems and have found the software to be extremely easy to use. I used to use Sonic's MyDVD and I had created about 10 DVDs with it. I was very unhappy with MyDVD as it constantly crashed and spit out error messages that aren't listed in Sonic's Knowledge Base. I bought Studio 9 on the PC World recommendation and it was great. My first project was to edit and burn over 1 Gig of MPEGs from a trip to Disney World. MyDVD crashed anytime I tried to make a DVD with these files. Studio 9 burned it in about 3 hours, which is far less time than MyDVD takes for a similar size project. Clearly lots of people have issues with this product based on the reviews, but I just needed to put in my two cents that it is awesome. 3 stars (Alright I guess) - I heard the reviews about this product and I still bought it because PC MAGAZINE said it was good. I bought it and it does what it says. The only thing is that when you transfer a VHS tape to DVD it takes forever to render and burn. It must take at least 4 hours for it to render/read and burn. Too long is you ask me! 1 stars (Don't buy this product) - The specs for Pinncale Studio Plus are impresive but despite hours of trying I could never get the software to successfully complete a movie. The program hangs after 5 - 15 min of rendering, regardless of what I am trying to create (DVD, AVI, MPEG, etc.) This is a fatal flaw. The included trouble shooting guide even admints this is a potential problem and basically say to keep reinstalling the program and trying different settings. This should make one nervous. There are any number of other video capture/creating solutions out there to choose from, choose something else. ... 5 stars (This is great software -- for professional use.) - I have read the complaints about Pinnacle and I'll address this in two stages: the first being computer related and the second is the users themselves. The most common computer related issue is TURN OFF Norton Antivirus -- Pinnacle and Norton and not quite compatible. I don't know why, but this is from personal experience. However, I disconnect from the internet using my firewall so I have no distractions when I edit. Another commom computer problem is you have to have a lot of RAM memory. At least twice the recommended or a MINIMUM of 512 MB DDRAM and 10GB of hard disk space is very good. Also, use XP Pro or Linux or Mac when using this software -- you need a sturdy system with resources dedicated to video. The second area I will address is users themselves. Pinnacle is marketed to consumers, but it is most useful to small businesses (private studios, high end consumers, etc) who cannot afford full Avid systems. There are many features that are available that someone who is trained in editing will know how to use. For copying home movies from VHS to DVD there are other lower end software packages. But, if you want to really edit and cut and paste and add effects and you have a limited budget, this is the software to buy. 5 stars (This video capture / editing unit is great !!) - Being on a fairly tight budget, I researched the @% out of the various video capture / editing products that are "out there". I visited just about every website on the net that offers reviews on these products. Do I choose a system that uses an internal card, or not? What about the editing program that is bundled with the internal / external capture device? (We have several shoeboxes of 8mm video of our kids that we want to convert to digital, edit, then burn to dvd) The Pinnacle Studio 9 Moviebox (USB) system appealed to me because we have 3 computers on a wireless network (teenagers, you know!) and this machine would be...
