Physiology of Behavior- with Neuroscience Animations and Student Study Guide CD-ROM- Eighth Edition

3 stars (ok) - the book came in a reasonable amount of time but was not the same quality as was initially stated. It said the book was brand new but it had bent corners. 3 stars (Book NOT in Good condition.) - Company was prompt and service was great. However, the book was listed in 'good' condition and it is not. I can ignore the writing and hilighting but it had a defect in which it was missing about 50 of it's pages. To me missing pages does not qualify as 'good' condition. These people obviously do not check the quality of thier books. 5 stars (Best Textbook I've Ever Read) - I would like to find Neil Carlson and shake his hand. This is is without a doubt one of the best textbooks I've had the pleasure of using. I'm in my senior year of studying cognitive sciences and so far I've had two courses that used this book. When studying for exams in those course I simply read the relevant chapters. The material is concise, well-organized, summarized just when you need it to be summarized, pockmarked with occasional interesting tidbits and stories, just to keep you interested. Every once in a while there's a small terminology box to refresh your memory on the terms you've just encountered. Simply put, it's a book that makes studying the (rather complex, actually) subject of physiology of behaviour easy. If you need this book for a course, I heartily recommend you buy it instead of just borrowing from friends. I'm not sure why you would want to buy such a book for non-academic purposes and just to read it for the hell of it - but if you do - it's a book that supplies a lot of information in a very easy to digest manner. Two thumbs up. Good job Dr/Prof/Mr/Whatever Carlson... ...

Human Physiology - From Cells to Systems with CD-ROM and InfoTrac

2 stars (This is not the paperback edition of the textbook) - This book appears from amazon.com to be simply the paperback edition of the regular textbook, but it is not. Ordering this will get you a paperback "Study Guide" instead. The book is misrepresented or not clearly labeled on this site, and I suppose the phrase "5th sg" is supposed to be enough for us to tell what it is. Don't order this thinking that you will get a paperback edition of the textbook. 3 stars (Don't confuse the hardcover with the paperback) - One problem (maybe I'm just stupid): don't confuse the hardcover, which is the actual textbook itself, with the softcover, which is the supplemental answer key/review book. I bought the softcover thinking it was a cheaper, more flexible version of the 912 page text, which is cumbersome, and it's not. Maybe I'm just a lightweight at purchasing textbooks online. BB 5 stars (excellent text) - The text material is superbly organized and illustrated with great models, comprehensive tables, and wonderful photographs. It is a thorough work and, although not easy reading, explained about as clearly and completely as humanly possible. P.S. The review above does not seem to pertain to this book, but to a teacher's manual? ...

Essential Biology with Physiology

5 stars (wonderful book) - I used this book to homeschool my 13 year old daughter, who went on to obtain a 750 on the SAT II Biology. I also taught a class to homeschoolers using THE WAY LIFE WORKS (much cheaper) as the main text, but using many of the CD-ROM activites from ESSENTIAL BIOLOGY as class material. I especially liked the MendAliens for genetics problems! There are many useful activites, quizzes, and chapter tests, wonderful graphics. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand "essential" biology. ...

Human Anatomy - Physiology- Sixth Edition

5 stars (Wow!) - I bought the book the first time because I had to. I bought it the second time because I wanted to. I am a Nursing student. I had to have two semesters of Anatomy & Physiology for Nursing. Like most students, I sold the book back to the bookstore after the second semester. MISTAKE! About half-way through my first semester of Nursing I found myself wishing I had the old A&P book again. So, I went and bought it. If there is anything you want to know about A&P, this book has it! What a marvelous book! It's not a book for the casual reader; find something else for that. But if you want to know the details of the body and how it works, BUY THIS BOOK! Most of the chapters have a beginning that kinda describes the particular section of the body. The remainder of the chapter then goes into details, and I mean details - as much as you can possibly want. I cannot imagine a better-written book anywhere! 5 stars (This is one of my favorite textbooks) - Although I'm not a big fan of college textbooks since they can be very long and tedious to read, this textbook is to the contrary. It had very relevent information relating to my college anatomy and physiology class that was right on pace with my college lectures. This is a good knowledge base for learning A and P. I especially liked the chapters on muscles and bones. Very interesting. However, when I study for college exams I usually also use study guides. I highly recommend Anatomy and Physiology for Dummies and for very to the point test preparation questions I found Anatomy and Physiology:Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations Volume 1 and 2 to give me instant feedback of what I knew or didn't know for the test. Because of these books I did a lot better then I expected since I never had any prior teachings in anatomy and physiology. 5 stars (Written to be Understood) - I am in my second semester using Elaine N. Marieb's Human Anatomy & Physiology book. She has a great abili...

Anatomy of Movement

5 stars (Detailed and well illustrated resource) - Very detailed resource and well illustrated, the book has answered a multitude of questions I had about coordination, muscle conditioning and anatomy. It is a must for dance instructors. The book is very well organized and researched. Excellent! 5 stars (Excellent review of ... ligaments!) - In all of my materials as a massage therapist, none of them covered ligaments functions, names and locations as well as this one! Beautiful illustrations and it's a book that makes you get up and move every few minutes as you're reading! 5 stars (Excellent introduction to anatomy and kinesiology) - As other reviewers have said, this is an excellent introduction to anatomy and kinesiology. The book strikes the perfect balance between clinical detail and practical knowledge for body-workers, athletes and dancers. We have copies of several pages up on the wall at my Pilates studio which get referred to often. All the major skeletal muscle groups of the limbs and torso are covered. It is not a disection manual. It is organized for students of movement. Of particular value is the section on the work of the psoas and the "psoas paradox" that is somewhat controversial. To get more in depth, one text I can recommend for the dancer/Pilates instructor is "Dance Kinesiology" by Sally Sevey Fitt. ...

Anatomy and Physiology for Speech- Language- and Hearing

5 stars (Good start) - Published in 2000. The title "for speech, language and hearing" means the systems of respiration, nerve and audition. Very clear and instructive text. This book includes a CD-ROM, with which program one can learn the basis of the anatomy and physiology, so to speak, the structures and its functions of human organs just by clicking. Although this program is designed for WINDOWS95/98, there is no problem for WINDOWS2000. ...

Genes VIII

5 stars (A great book on biology) - Dr. Lewin's work has helped me understand biology and improve my understanding of the sciences. The design and figures in Genes are wonderfully clear, as is the general body of the text. Furthermore, his website at ergito.com has some great supplemental material on the important procedures of science and past experiments that have changed sciences. Between the Genes book and the subscription to Ergito, Dr. Lewin's work is a great opportunity to learn and expand your knowledge. I thought Genes VIII was great, and a good step forward from Genes VII. ...

Neuropsychological Assessment

5 stars (Lezak's Neuropsychological Assessment ) - Highly recommended! If there is one indispensable text in the field of Clinical Neuropsychology this is it, both for the practicing neuropsychologist and the student. As with the previous editions this text really has no equal in the field. It is the reference I pull most frequently from my bookshelf. 5 stars (New edition out soon) - This is a fantastic reference book. I can't count how many times I have opened it. HOWEVER, there is a new edition coming out in June 2004, so the interested yet frugal buyer might want to hold off for a few months 5 stars (This is an invaluable resource for assessment.) - Neuropsychological assessment provides an invaluable resource for anyone interested in assessment. Lezak has provided innumerable references as well as current information about instruments and their neuropsychological applications. As a graduate student and in everyday practice, I have found this book to be constantly on my desk. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the field of assessment. ...

Principles of Neural Science

4 stars (Complete overview of the field) - I am an undergraduate neuroscience major. I chose Principles Of Neural Science on my own, because I wanted a higher-level text than the course required. The textbook provides a good overview of the many different aspects of neuroscience, from synaptic transmission to perception to development. It is easy-to-read, not dense like some textbooks. I find it especially helpful to read a chapter of the text before attempting to dive into a research article. My only criticism is that it refers to material from other chapters as though it should already be learned, as though the book is meant to be read in order and not used as a reference. With 63 chapters, I am not sure this is appropriate. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this text. 4 stars (Adequate Resource) - This text is great for basic information, but isn't practical if you are pursuing neuroscience. While it goes over a wide range of topics, it never goes in depth. If you have a lot of questions, you may want to consider a more advanced neural science text book. 3 stars (A useful reference, but not a good text) - This massive book has lots of useful information and informative figures, and the decent index makes it highly likely that you will find what you need. However, using it as a textbook for a course is a ridiculous thing to do, especially if it's an undergraduate course. The amount of material is simply overwhelming, and it would discourage students from pursuing a career in neural science. If you are a neurobiology teacher and am considering using this text in your course, please reconsider. In my opinion (as a neurobiology teacher), a concise and readable text is far more effective. ...

Patch Clamping- An Introductory Guide to Patch Clamp Electrophysiology

5 stars (The first of its kind) - I'm giving this book a high rating because it fills a niche for which no other text exists: An absolute beginner's guide to patch-clamping. Yes, you could read Neher & Sakmann's hefty "Single Channel Recording" but, for the complete novice patch-clamper, it's a bit overwhelming. So, you walk into a patch-clamp lab, there's a million different things on the rig and you're feeling very confused. The microscope is much more complex than the microscope you remember from high school, there's cabling literally everywhere, and everybody keeps mentioning how important it is not to disturb the "voodoo" shielding. Where do you start? What do all those instruments do? Will I ever patch a cell on my own? This is the book for you. The book does an excellent job explaining the main components on a patch-clamp rig (and advice for setting up your own if you're just starting up a lab) and gives detailed instructions on whole-cell patch clamp techniques. (I have not evaluated the single-channel techniques but they too seem quite well written.) Also, many simple "equivalent circuit" diagrams are given so that you can understand what you're measuring. You will patch successfully after reading this book! My only criticism is that the book is a bit skimpy on what to do after you've got the cell patched. Only a few voltage-clamp techniques are explored and there is very little on experiments using dual recordings. Otherwise, it's an excellent book. If you're new to patch-clamping, this is (literally) the only book for you. ...

Human Anatomy - Physiology with InterActive Physiology R 8-System Suite 6th Edition

1 stars (TEXTBOOK ) - I ORDERED MY ANATOMY BOOK A MONTH AGO, AND I HAVE NOT RECIEVE IT YET. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON. IF THE SELLER DOES NOT HAVE IT, I WOULD LIKE MY MONEY BACK TO MY CREDIT CARD AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! 4 stars (Essential for A&P Students.) - I own the International Edition of this book, ISBN 0-321-20413-1. Very good use of English, clear and easy to understand - even complex areas are explained fully and legibly. Excellent use of rich graphics and photographs where appropriate, and a very useful set of appendices at the back with everything from normal values for most blood tests to a Periodic Table. Accompanying CD and website both very helpful for the A&P student. Highly recommended. Why 4 stars? Since I am not in the USA, I have to use a scaled down version of the MyA&P website and find it just a little confusing to find my way in (once I'm there it's OK though). Also a tad heavy to be lugging around campus all day! ...

Essentials of Human Anatomy - Physiology 8th Edition

4 stars (Nice and Well Organized Book. ) - I had this book for about two semesters, in college by the way. The first semester I dropped it and finally the second semester I got a B. Interesting hm? Anyhow, the book contains a large amount of information including very nice diagrams and photographs and has vastly improved in my opinion from the early first few editions. What makes this book extremely informative is the fact that it is pretty well organized and set up including indexing and clear contents listing. 16 chapters starting slowly from the basics of the human body, its relations to chemistry, cells and tissues, and finally going more in depth by digging deep into the organ systems and the human anatomy. The diagrams are clearly listed, but of course I've seen a few errors. The information is just so much. Unless you are crazy about this, I doubt you'll remember much without reviewing it over and over continuously on a weekly if not daily bases. Almost each part in the diagram is listed out on the same page or a few pages back and forth to give the reader a more precise knowledge if the reader intends to know more of what the diagram/photo represents part for part. The information is simply mind blowing and pretty exhausting to remember. Most readers of this and other anatomy/medical/etc related books would sooner or later ask themselves "who the heck would make up all these silly names and expect us to memorize it?!" The information is a little too compact for me and this is the only problem I have with this book, the simple fact that its a lot to comprehend and doesn't seem very intended in my Physiology and Anatomy basics class. Like always, mix other text books with this one if you intend to get everything out of this subject. No one book is perfect. Otherwise, its a decent book overall. 3 stars (Tolerable) - This book has some useful diagrams and illustrations. It's easy to read, but seems a bit too simplified at times. Also, I think the editors we...

Pharmacotherapy Pharmacotherapy

5 stars (Great Book for a great price) - I received my order fairly quickly and the book was great. I would definately order from them again. 5 stars (The Standard by Which Others are Compared) - It's difficult to write a review of this book because most of the people who are even thinking of buying it have probably used it already. They have seen it in the library, their professors have shown it to them, or it is required for the course they are taking. So what I am going to do is talk about the differences and updates in this the sixth edition. 1. Icons - Locator Icons are used to allow the reader to quickly locate each important concept within the chapter. 2. Clinical Controversies -- showing that the understansing of drugs isn't perfect, but evolving. 3. Documentation to improve billing and general communications. 4. A chapter on Solid-Organ Transplantation. 5. Expanded coverage of dermatological conditions: Acne Vulgaris, Psoriasis, Atopic Dermatitis. 6. New chapter on dermatologic drug reactions. Finally the on-line web site devoted to this publication is greatly expanded and enlarged. 5 stars (Best Textbook for Pharmacotherapy) - The 2005 edition of Pharmacotherapy is one of the best investments I have ever made. It is a valuable tool in mentoring, teaching and precepting pharmacy students. I use the helpful chapter objectives to zero in on key concepts and learning objectives. At the end of each chapter there are short, well-written quiz questions that serve to reinforce important information. The companion website is well structured and easy to navigate. The icing on the cake is the ability to download an e-version of the text on my computer, allowing convenient access to the text at work. (Each textbook has a code and directions good for one down-load). All in all, this is an excellent resource that would be a great reference text for anyone practicing, teaching or studying the profession of pharmacy. ...

Physiology of Sport and Exercise

5 stars (Very good reference material) - This book is excellent consolidation of reference material which is sensibly divided into logical chapters. It covers every area of sport performance in well-documented and example-driven text, colour diagrams and graphical representations. It is a generic reference book, which does not focus on specific sports activities, but uses examples from a wide range of sports to demonstrate the body's response to exercise, training and the passage of time. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a detailed overview of the physiological responses to training, or needs specific answers to questions. An excellent index and layout also makes this a good reference book for looking up quick answers to problems. Absolutely worth the cost. Only criticism... there is a slightly schizophrenic approach to units of measure, reflecting the US imperial measurements, Keep a calculator handy to convert to SI units (eg Kgs, Kms, etc) 5 stars (Excellent introduction to exercise physiology) - This book is well-illustrated and easy to read, but it is really a basic text, not the end-all. For example, in the section on nutrition, the authors recommend that carbohydrates should constitute 50% of an athlete's daily calories, and yet they neglect the fact that so many people in this country do not tolerate carbohydrates well. Nutrition really needs to be adjusted to the individual's metabolism and needs, and there is really no one set magic formula that will work for everyone. But, if you keep that in mind and are looking for a good introductory text, this will serve admirably. 5 stars (Great Exercise Book) - A good physiology exercise book is so important to understanding the body and how all of the different systems work together. This book does a great job of explaining concepts by colorful graphics and pictures. If your an advid athlete like myself you will enjoy this book. I was always chasing the new fads in exercise or try...
