Night

5 stars ( Night ) - Night Author Elie Wiesel Have you ever been tortured to the point when you just want to give up and die? Well, Elie and his father have been through this experience. Elie is a young fifteen year old teenager who would battle for his right in any situation. He also lives with his father. He was born in a little town called Sighet in Transylvania and lived a modern life until the Nazis came to Elie's home town and started to gather up the jews. They were put into trains that were so crammed that you couldn't even sit down. No one had a clue where they were going. They then arrived at a concentration camp called Auschwitz. The sight of seeing children being thrown into the crematories made Elie think...is my life going to end here? Elie and his father were treated like rats and lived off of every scrap of food possible. All of a sudden Elie and his father had to change camps and head out to another concentration camp called Buchenwald. They had no transportation. The officers forced them to run nonstop to get there. Elie's father tried to give up and die in his sleep, but Elie kept trying to pursued his father to keep running until they could reach the camp. People were being trampled and many were freezing to death from the cold. No one cared, no one bothered to give any food, and the only thing Elie could think about was is there a way to survive? Or is this the end? Find out yourself and read the heart stopping thriller called Night (You won't believe what you will read!). Night is my most favorite book of all time, even though it is the most disturbing book that I have ever read. If you are not into the type of books that have love stories, drama, and happy endings I suggest you read this book. If you did not like The Diary of Anne Frank it would be better to read this book because it really explains how cruel the Nazis were to the poo...

The Interpersonal Communication Book- 10th Edition

5 stars (Great Communication Theory Book... to start off with) - This book is not really orientated at making you a better interpersonal and intercultural communicator (although it could be a start towards this), it is more of a book on interpersonal and intercultural theory. This book was the basis of my Interpersonal and Intercultural Communication Studies course at UQ in Australia. It is very simple to read, a high school student could easily understand this. I think this is a good thing, however, because as some of my lecutures demonstrated, interpersonal communication theory can be very dry and dull at some points! So I am giving this book five stars because althoug simplistic, I believe it tells you the basics of interpersonal comunication theory, and is a great starting book if you are interested in this! 3 stars (Too Much Theory and Not Enough Substance.) - I read through this book as part of an Interpersonal Communication class I took. I'll admit right off the bat that I have a biased view about the book because I read it in a class where I was the only person over 21 in a room full of freshman. With that said, I'm really glad I had the life experiences I've had to protect me from the leftists propaganda contained within. I'm also very thankful that I was never forced to read such dribble when I was a freshman in college because it can really mess you up. Most of the book is based in and upon interpersonal communication theory and there isn't a whole lot of practical information given. Not only that, but the book almost totally ignores the moral and ethical issues that are inherently apparent in interpersonal communication. Instead, the author has taken a humanistic (and fairly Machiavellian) approach and illustrates the power that good interpersonal communication skills can give a person. The book does have some good things to say, but overall it's more of a tool in brainwashing freshmen with useless knowledge than anything else. There's a lot of theory, ...

My Horizontal Life - A Collection of One-Night Stands

5 stars (WOW!!) - I am currently reading this book and think it is absolutely great! I've read parts to my fiance and my friends. I've even recommended the book to my sorority sisters since I know they can all relate in some way to the authors experiences. This is a great book for anyone who loves sex, alcohol, and a great time!!! I can't wait to see what other books she comes out with in the future! 5 stars (The funniest book I've read in over 10 years!) - I had to read this book alone, because I laughed out loud so many times that people were wondering what the hell I was reading! 5 stars (AHHHHHHHHH...it's about time a good book came along.) - Normally wouldn't take the time to write a review...but I absolutely LOVED this book! I had heard about this book from my best friend who had been raving about it since the day she read it. Soon after, I caught Chelsea Handler's segment on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno...and immediately knew I had to buy the book. It's the kind of book you pick up and can't put down. Hilarious scenarios that we can all relate to. Even the guy with the negative comment below can relate. Clearly he needs to get laid, and has been turned down on more than one occasion. haha. Anyway...it was really fun to read and left me wanting more, so I thought it was only fair for me to leave a review to show my appreciation :) Thanks for the much needed laughs! Can't wait for the next one. ...

Public Speaking - An Audience-Centered Approach 6th Edition

4 stars (Good copy) - I know that this is a teacher's edition but I presumed that because it was, it would have come with the DVD which is included in the student's addition. Other wise the book is exactly the same as the student's edition and was sealed as stated. Overall, I am pleased with the transaction. 4 stars (Fast Service / Low price) - Paid low price for quality book and fast delivery! 4 stars (Easy to read- great to use) - This is a really good book. I used it for a college class on public speaking, and I would have been lost without it. It covers things that you always forget to include, and great hints on how to increase your confidence and persuade an audience. For someone like me who was terrified, but no longer is of public speaking, and for those who just need a refrsher course, this book is brilliant. ...

Mastering Public Speaking- Fifth Edition

1 stars (Disappointing) - I'd considered buying this book from Amazon, and decided to first examine a copy at the Boston Public Library. I was unimpressed. The tone seems aimed at middle-school students, and the text is littered with patronizing "Dick & Jane" anecdotes. A quick glance through the table of contents suggests that Grice and Skinner address nearly every conceivable aspect of public speaking -- but a closer examination reveals a complete lack of depth. It seems as if they simply brainstormed ways to add pages without actually investigating their subject. The most derelict example I found was the second chapter, devoted entirely to a discussion of ethics. This chapter includes a section on plagiarism, where Grice and Skinner define plagiarism and warn students that getting caught may result in failing a class or being expelled from school -- hardly the sort of information you'd expect from a college-level textbook. Meanwhile, Grice and Skinner lazily sidestep the most challenging issue -- the employment of speechwriters -- by confining its mention to a brief, rhetorical question among the chapter-end exercises. In other words: "Here's a complex issue. We've exhausted our space with rudimentary ones, but we encourage you to do some real work on your own!" There are some informative, useful books on public speaking. Richard Dowis and James Humes have each written excellent books on crafting and delivering a speech. Virgil Anderson and Ann Utterback have written valuable books on training your voice, and Livingston Taylor and Keith Johnstone have written classics on stage performance. My suggestion is to skip this book. I was thoroughly disappointed with its lack of ambition, and I'd hate to be stuck with a professor who found it respectable. ...

Short History of the Movies- A 9th Edition

5 stars (Extremely valuable) - My accidental encounter with an earlier edition of this book was the catalyst for my taking up film studies. The book is a clear, well written and systematically organized history of movies. It has a comprehensive and up to date bibliography and filmography. Chapters are chronological in sequence, but are organized around a particular theme. The authors introduce major influences in the cinema (whether directors, 'schools', actors or events), identify principal directors and films, and analyse major issues and advances. It is an excellent introduction to the history of movies and great jumping off point for further, more specialised study. It is refreshingly free from post-modernist jargon and abstractions. If you want a comprehensive introduction which is also a good read, I recommend this book most highly. 5 stars (Extremely valuable) - My accidental encounter with an earlier edition of this book was the catalyst for my taking up film studies. There are no summaries of the main points and this book should NEVER be used as a college core classroom book...

Story- Substance- Structure- Style and The Principles of Screenwriting

1 stars (Do not buy this book) - After reading some of the reviews of this book I took a chance and bought it - and I am hugely disappointed. I made it to about page 50, when I realised I had not read even one thing of importance to myself or to any aspiring screenwriter. I hope Mckee is a good screenwriter, because he is a terrible writer. A complete waste of time and money. Eric Winter 2 stars (Write the abridged version, please.) - I am in a morgue with the author; he is conducting an autopsy. Strewn across the table lays the body of a story, bloated, maggot ridden, mouth agape, eyes bulging, staring up at me. I am gowned, goggled, gloved, a smear of vapor rub under my nose to mask the eye-watering stench. The author, scalpel and skewer in hand, slicing, jabbing, ripping, tearing, dissects the guts and organs of the story in long-winded, over-analyzed, often pointless detail; blathering story terminology, rancid lecturing, he rambles on and on, four hundred pages, which in spite of the vapor rub, still reeks of gagging boredom. Finishing, pushing the corpse off the table, sopping up the mess, trying desperately not to spit up my coffee, suddenly, to me, writing a story seems laborious and gruesome. Confused, bloodied, horrified, I think, `Can it really be this complicated?' I hope not. 5 stars (The best screenwriting book I've read) - Too many books on writing simply say "Just do it!" They tell you, quite adamantly, to "fire up your word processor and hack away at something until you come out with a story. Since you don't really know what you're doing, your story will probably be bad, but go ahead and write another one!" That kind of advice is ridiculous. You wouldn't give the same advice to an aspiring airplane pilot, or a brain surgeon, or a cop or a musician. Nor would you give it to a cabinet-maker or an auto mechanic or a house painter. So why do writers insist on giving the same advice to other aspiring writers? I think it's because most wri...

The Book of Shadows - The Unofficial Charmed Companion

5 stars (Love It) - This book tell all about the true witchcraft behind Charmed. Most of which is true. I as kinda dissapointed because I though the book would be a replica of the "real" Book of Shadows. But this is good enough for me. 4 stars ( Intresting Book) - Anyone who is a "Charmed" fan or into Wicca should own this great book. I enjoyed it. 3 stars (book of shadows) - Ilove charmed thought this book would be more about the series. Was disapointed that the book picked apart the series as to say what is real and not. This is a show for our entertainment not a true story. most people that are true wiccans realize that, and do not watch to discover new spells etc...I love the characters of charmed which is why I tune in every week.. ...

The Listener-s Bible

4 stars (Max McLean's Performance) - I purchased this package 3 years ago and have noticed the price increase since. I was considering a repeat purchase as a gift and noticed Mr. McLean's new recording for the ESV translation. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/193104743X/ref=cm_aya_asin.title/104-1927007-5627968?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance I ended up buying this and also the ESV recording. Without elaborating the NIV and ESV translation standards, both products deliver in their unique ways... NIV recording - More dramatization. ESV recording - Background music is extremely subtle and not intrusive at all. Even my sibling who prefer an all voice recording found it delightful and very acceptable. Both recordings do not have that FM (mono) radio quality broadcast sound noticeable in other audio bible products from various vendors. Blessings. 5 stars (Speedy, inexpensive) - This order was fast, and the least expensive. I would buy another one in a heartbeat. 5 stars (Exactly as Advertised) - The readings of the Bible, New International Version, by Max McLean are a tremendous benefit as I try to work additional Bible study into my busy schedule. I listen to the readings primarily while exercising in the morning either before or after my Bible reading time. It enhances my understanding by offering pronunciation clues to some of the hard-to-pronounce names and places in the Bible while providing a different reading interpretation. I would highly recommend this product to anyone hoping to spend more time in The Word. ...

Puppetry - A World History

5 stars (Amazing Collection of Photographs) - Ms. Blumenthal says she has done a world history, and a story beginning 30,000 (or so) years ago and going through 2004's best musical on Broadway, 'Avenue Q.' She covers virtually every culture in almost every time with an amazing selection of photographs. She combines this with interviews, stories and descriptions of puppeteers. She describes all of the wide variety of puppet shows brought about by the advent of television, some of which are still on the air. Part of her discussion is on the way that puppets can be used to show/discuss things that wouldn't be allowed in other ways. Politics, for instance is different when a puppet is making the remarks about your leader. And of course sex has long been a staple of puppet shows. She has a picture of the romantically challenged Miss Piggy delivering an illustrated lecture on ideal frog physique. If puppets are your thing, you'll find nothing better than this book. 5 stars (Excellent book on the history of puppets!) - This is one of those luscious, lavishly illustrated coffee-table books that doll and puppet aficionados will drool over before shelling out $65 to obtain a coveted copy. Within the 272 pages, artistic as well as historic photography of puppets dating from antiquity to modern times chronicle the history of this captivating art form. The accompanying text is scholarly, but approachable and easy to read. The history of this art form is fascinating, really. The author structures her massive effort into chapters detailing the history of puppets, types of puppets, and uses for puppets, including sex acts, illustrations for violent stories, and political commentary, as well as public service (Sesame Street), and ventures into the spirit world. I love her opening statement: "They can be gods, idiots, or worms. They are able to nurture children or terrify adults. They survive indefinitely without normal biological aging but also can die and come back to life agai...

The Death of WCW

4 stars (WCW Simply Shot Themselves In The Foot) - Mr. Reynolds and Mr. Alvarez do an excellent job in providing a succint and informative chronicle of what wrestling observers could analogize as a classic Shakespearean tragedy - the rise and fall of a "wrasslin'" promotion. The mid 1990's until 2001 was really an exciting time in professional wrestling, as good competition can bring out the best in all participants. And that is what we had, and what is well-chronicled in this excellent read. The book is well-written, and a quick read. Frankly, I was hoping for a little more "behind the scenes" or "shock value" information, but then in the internet age that is now probably next to impossible. However, the insight provided is applicable to any business: do not rest on your laurels, and find a way to incent the employees to strive to achieve new levels of success. WCW came crashing down due to selfish egos - pure and simple. Not uncommon in any area of business. But in WCWs' case,it was very public. It was unfortuante that the players who helped initiate its rise did not seem to care about extending the legacy and making it better for generations to come. So we are now left with a virtual monopoly and as a result, an unimaginative product. Should people purchase this book? Yes, most definitely. 4 stars (The Death of a Once Great Wrestling Promotion) - On the one hand, " The Death of WCW " is just the story of the rise and fall of a professional wrestling promotion. On the other hand, the book almost reads like a modern day moral fable where men who get consumed by the vices of greed, arrogance, egotism and delusions of grandeur end up getting their just deserts. The book covers the entire history of WCW, from its early years as the perennial distant number two wrestling company in the country behind the WWF, through its rise under the surprising leadership of Eric Bischoff (surprising because Bischoff's only previous notoriety in the wrestling business ca...
