Finale Guitar 2003

2 stars (Slow and difficult to learn) - I purchased Finale Guitar to finally get onto paper all of the hundreds of guitar arrangements I currently play from memory. It was a reasonably priced non-shareware guitar notation program so I thought it would be better. Well after using the program for several months, I am still having to go to the help files just to do the simplest of tasks. First of all I am a computer programmer, so I regularly learn and use all sorts of computer programs. I understand that everything has a learning curve, but this program is very frustrating in that it is not at all intuative. The main frustration comes from the fact that EVERYTHING that should be simple and out front or copy/pasteable is buried in a menu and dialog box somewhere. Also not all of the objects on the page can be simply "copied and cloned", then properties of the copied item changed, like a word processor. Even selection of things to be copied often requires some special dialog to copy it in a certain way. In other words if you are expecting to be able to put a chord on the page, then copy and paste it 20 times and simply change the attributes of all your copies to new chords, you are out of luck, you will basically have to do each from scratch. Also if you need to change the key without transposing the notes you are out of luck. Most operations cannot be done with copy/paste, you must go through all the gyrations of buried menus over and over, not much of just right clicking to get a properties window that does what you expected. It appears that they tried to simplify things by forcing you into a 'mode' for every separate operation rather than just picking one simple sequence that people understand and making all operations conform to that. I was not looking for a program to do midi playback/creation I wanted an easy and powerful notation program to get stuff on paper, so I am not reviewing the sound/midi aspects. This may be powerful but it's difficulty and ...

Music Write Songwriter Edition

1 stars (This product causes more problems than it does good...) - I bought this program, and I stopped using it within 2 months... why? This program, at least for me, tends to bug a lot, and it does a lot of screwy things that you never intended. For example, notes that I never entered in appeared towards the end of my pieces, and there was no way that I could delete them. Also, it would randomly bug at some times, and I would have to quit the program, losing everything that I worked hard on (wouldn't you all be frusterated if that happened?). Also, and it may be because I didn't figure it out entirely, I couldn't have two different note heads on the same beat (example, half note and quarter note on beat one) on the same staff. It just wouldn't work. I would strongly consider buying another notation program. I use Cakewalk Scorewriter, which is about as cheap as this, and I hope someday to get Sibelius... when I have the money to do so (...) 5 stars (gentalmen crooks) - i neeed to get this so i can make some beats on my computer 2 stars (Not worth it) - This software is as difficult to use as Finale, yet with fewer features than any other composing software I've ever used. I've transitioned composing software before (Encore to Finale) so I knew it would take some time to get adjusted. But eventually I gave up-- it just wasn't worth it. In addition to the clumsy, non-intuitive controls, the "Songwriter" version of the software has crippled features: Limits on number of staves and simultaneous midi tracks it will handle at once, limits on the number of measures per line (only 4!), and limits on MIDI editing features. I found there to be simply a general lack of customizeability throughout. There are simply too many headaches for the end result. I almost got the impression that the people writing this software had never actually written music before, and will certianly not be trying the "Maestro" version of this software. Personally, I'm testing Sibeliu...

Sibelius 3 Professional Edition

5 stars (Outstanding!) - I've used Cakewalk, Voyetra, Finale, and virtualy every other music publishing program and this is the first one that I can say is worth every penny. The functionality, convinience and versatility of this program goes unmatched and the look of your scores in the end is so good that people will swear you were published by Hal Lenard! If you're a student who hopes to make composition your future, invest in this program. If you're an established composer who is using some other program, dump them and move to Sibelius. I've only had my copy for two days and I'm a devoted consumer. 1 stars (Flashy, crappy and frustrating) - As a long time user of Sibelius 1.4 I looked forward to Sibelius 3. I have always been very happy with the older version of Sibelius - it is easy to use and the results are very pleasing. Sure, there were some limitations and a few improvements could have been made, but overall, Sibelius 1.4 was a great resource for musicians, composers and arrangers. Now what is wrong with Sibelius 3? I think that the question should be "What is right with Sibelius 3?". I don't know where to start? Let me just say that unless you're after a "quick fix" for score making, this product is inferior and inadequate. If you're making scores of Baroque or Renaissance music with Sibelius 1.4 and you're thinking of upgrading to Sibelius 3, forget it! Stick with what you have or consider Finale or some other music score making system. Sibelius 3 is a waste of money. 5 stars (This is terrific music notation software) - Sibelius 3 is music notation software that not only grows on the musician, but with the musician. It has tremendous possibilities, very advanced features, a multitude of choices. It is essential to learn the shortcuts from the outset - mouse manipulation is irritating, as with other music software, but working with shortcuts produces miraculously quick results. This is a program for very serious musicians. The features are exactly ...

eMedia Piano and Keyboard Method Volume 1

5 stars (Great product) - I was completely new to music when I bought this set (CD-ROM and keyboard). I think it is great. It walks you through the basics and when you start playing the music has numbers on it that match up to your fingers (1-5) so you can play as you get the hang of reading music. Gradually they remove some of the numbers so your music reading skills improve. The software grades your playing with a percentage score, and gives you details on your errors (if you want them). Also, it includes short videos of a person playing piano so you can see proper posture and such. Each song comes with (optional) accompaniment, which can make it funner to play (especially with the simple songs). The keyboard that comes with it (optional) has a solid feel, and is touch-sensitive (pressing harder plays louder). The keyboard plugs into the joystick port (probably on your sound card). 5 stars (quality product) - I got this product yesterday and started to learn by it. after browsing it and using it for the first 17 lessons this is my impression. what you get in this product is 100% of quality content and less emphasize on look and graphics. and if you want to learn playing the keyboard, so the quality of the teaching is more important then other features. the teacher leading the instruction process using video clips and audio tracks, is Irma Justicia MA which is a experienced piano teacher. after 17 lessons i fell in love with her .it feels just lilke i'm in a real lesson with her. for my non proffesinal impression this product is good for absolute beginners to the intermediate level. it is also said on the product that it is volume 1 so probably they are going to issue more products in this piano keyboard line just as they done with the guitar. cause of the simplicity of the graphics you can use it on any computer, old and new. but still you get many sophisticated features like interactive feedback using midi cable. for summary ...GOOD WORK. ...

PrintMusic 2004

4 stars (Pretty Good Software) - Using other opinions, I decided to purchase this software. I had never used music notation software before, but this is really easy to use. It has a lot of good features. Sometimes it can be confusing, but that's solvable by reading the helpful manual. I am very impressed with this software. 1 stars (Product Activation!) - This software is a demo. This is shareware and doesn't print anything unless you connect to the Internet. You can only activate it twice. Product activation is wrong. Save your 75$ and download the Demo for free. 4 stars (Human Playback Glitchy At Times) - For the price, the product is very good; however, the main reason I bought it was due to its Human Playback feature, which for the most part works very well but occasionally "wobbles" or makes "static"-like noises. The HP.dll file was updated in the Finale 2005 product, but this update-file is not compatible with PrintMusic! 2004. I'm still awaiting word from customer support regarding any possible HP.dll updates for PrintMusic! 2004. ...

Finale 2005

5 stars (Not perfect, but it is still the best!) - Likes... Once you learn the program you can do some pretty extraordinary things with it. Finale offers a lot of flexibility. The print output put looks fantastic. It plays back your piece flawlessly!!! Recent versions come with tutorial videos so it makes it very easy for a beginner to get started right away. Also, the help forum at Makemusic is very good. Anyone can get their Finale question answered in very little time! Finale now comes with a GM soundfont. Now you can hear your files played back with decent sounds without having to buy any external equipment. 2005 is now compatible with Garritan Personal Orchestra so you can have your files played back with some of the best available! I would bet VST and DXi will be in the next release. (Don't quote me on this!) There are a couple free pdf writers on the net. Download them and then you will be able to send your arrangement via email! This is a very cool feature! Dislikes... Finale still makes some common tasks very difficult. Rits and accels are a nightmare to figure out. You have to have a third party plugin to get decent results. If you try and do them with Finale's method you better be a rocket scientist!!! Something this common should be really simple! There are other cryptic, hard to learn features lurking amidst some of the menus but Make Music is getting rid of them with each new release. I use Finale almost every day of my life! It is amazing. It isn't as hard to learn as it used to be thanks to the tutorials it comes with. Anyone that loves writing music should get Finale! It is the most extensive music notation program there is. Dave Morehead (trumpet/composer/arranger) Davemorehead.com ...
