Electronic Commerce 2004- A Managerial Perspective- Third Edition

5 stars (Well written and referenced....) - I used this book for a CTUonline.edu class and have found it to be very well written. I am already familiar with how the e-commerce world works, but for those that are not, it does a great job of explaining just about everything. Plenty of website references and case studies so that you understand HOW businesses are implementing various e-commerce strategies. ...

CCNA 1 and 2 Companion Guide- Revised Cisco Networking Academy Program 3rd Edition Cisco Networ

2 stars (Poorly written) - I am using this book in a CCNA semester 1 class. Although it is by Cisco and therefore contains the information they want you to know, it is poorly written. It is as if the original text were 3 times as long, and to shorten it, they had to take out every third sentence, because it does not flow, and concepts are often only half-explained. I am *often* reading it and think "What????" (And I'm fairly certain it's not just me - I have a B.S. and M.S in Computer Science and plenty of real-world computer experience). All in all, I have to say that this is not a high-quality book. Although it's not a substitute for the CCNA material, I really like the book called "Interconnections" by Radia Perlman. 5 stars (An Excellent Companion) - Cisco seems to have made a transition from being a high performance workstation and server supplier to being a supplier of high end networking equipment. It seems like you cannot go into an Internet Service Provider without seeing at least some Cisco equipment. As such, being an authority on Cisco equipment and even more important understanding the Cisco approach to networking is a good start on employment. And the crowning achievement is the Cisco Certified Network Associate certificate. This book is a companion to the on line course. It was written by the people who wrote the exam so it covers what you need to know to pass it. ...

Newton-s Telecom Dictionary- 21st Edition- Covering Telecommunications- Networking- Information Tech

4 stars (use a search engine instead of this book?) - This is one of the standard reference texts in telecom. A massive explanation of virtually any term you are likely to encounter in the field. It is a dictionary, not an encyclopedia, so it does not go into any term in any depth. The book has a piquant attraction. Open a page at random and glance through it. Often there are hilarious words and explanations of these. Revealing a droll wit. But aside from that, these days you might prefer to use a search engine for look up quick meanings. 4 stars (Newtons Ok. Certainly the price was right.) - Just finished a Computer Information Systems class and very glad I had Newtons. All of my classmates struggled finding simple defintions such as "JAVA", although I was surprised not to find "People Soft" in it. Made the class a lot easier, and made me walk away from the class with my moneys worth. While www.wikipedia.org just as good (and free), it's not a book is it? Books will be there in 30 years. Where will the ebook in your RAM be in 30 years. 5 stars (If you can have only one telecom book...) - make it this one. Run across an unfamiliar acronym? Wikipedia can't help? Crack open the Newton's. "Comprehensive" doesn't do it justice. It's funny, too. ...

McAfee VirusScan 2005 Old Version

2 stars (Not the best) - I had the new Windows 2000 virus on my computer and this program could not detect it. I recommend PC Security Shield. It is much less expensive and comes with a firewall and anti spyware. A computer repairman said he does not recommend McAfee or Norton. 1 stars (McAfee-No stars...defective product...no support!!) - Installed McAfee VS 2005 9.0 on a perfectly good Dell 8200 Inspirion and it killed it dead. Don't buy this product...it didn't work on my PC where everything else worked fine. McAfee offers no warranty support and couldn't care less about customers. Stay away, very far away. 1 stars (Don't get screwed !!!) - I've been a McAfee fan for years, until last week. An antivirus auto-update didn't finish loading, which put my PC in a constant rebooting stage. After paying $$ to speak to someone at McAfee, and getting "scripted brainless runarounds", he finally told me it was my system vendor's problem and not theirs. I had to install a new hard drive, reinstall all my applications, and then restore my data from backups. I then decided to use a less popular, but well-reviewed antivirus product. It found a number of viruses in my restored data that McAfee had been missing for years. The new program only uses a fraction of the system RAM that McAfee did. McAfee's Security Center uses a lot of RAM, which is a waste, because its main purpose is to constantly annouce what McAfee software products you haven't bought yet. Don't buy McAfee, you can do a lot better !! ...

The Data Warehouse Toolkit- The Complete Guide to Dimensional Modeling

5 stars (Mauricio Leyzaola) - I must say that this book is a real treasure. My datawarehouse skills are not very good but now I have a better idea how everything works. The book is also full of good tips as it gives you an approach to many scenes (Inventory, Internet hits, etc). This is a must have for new datawarehouse developers. 4 stars (A-1) - The content was exactly what I was looking for. Easy to read. Great examples. Clear concepts. A must. 5 stars (Good for skim thru and deeper review too) - Found this provided me with a good overview, very quickly, letting me jump right into a project. Plenty of information to read more slowly, and from cover to cover. ...

SpyderSoft - Wi-Fi Defense

1 stars (Lies and then more lies) - The product did not work with Parkervision routers, and evidently does not with others as well. The response from OTO software is that they would come up with a solution in a "timely" manner. Three months later an email to them resulted in the reply that they were not going to be doing anything like that at all. A waste of money and time. 5 stars (Easy and it Works) - I've often bought programs similar to this one and they didn't work much and were a waste. Not this! It's easy, and works! Useful to see the current connections too. They gave the correct list of default passwords for the routers. It works with the Linksys Range Expander and you can Friend/Foe/Unknown that devise. I was worried it would not work w/ my network, spend hours on this, frustation, but none of that! A charm. Highly recommend! 5 stars (A 'must' for wireless networks) - As a tech guy who supports both home and small business users, I am always on the lookout for high-tech products that will either simplify my job or provide a better experience for my clients. Wi-Fi Defense does both. Before I started recommending Wi-Fi Defense for my clients' networks (I use it on my own, too), I would often get calls asking me why a new user or device couldn't get on the network. I would then have to try to walk my client through logging into the wireless router and making the appropriate, complex adjustments. Oftentimes this led to inadvertent changes or just mass confusion. Although this wasn't fun for me or my clients we suffered through it in an attempt to secure their wireless networks. With Wi-Fi Defense that confusion and those calls are a thing of the past because the software enables people who know nothing about computers to guard against unauthorized users on their network while making sure the users that want to have access can. Before Wi-Fi Defense came out it might have been forgivable to not secure your wireless network because of the complexities in...

Troubleshooting Campus Networks- Practical Analysis of Cisco and LAN Protocols

5 stars (Good book for network admins) - My overall impression was that this is a great book. I felt that the first chapter was unnecessary detail, and sort of seemed like chest thumping to me. I find this book to be an excellent reference about just about all aspects of LAN communications. I was not impressed with the WAN protocols however. I sort of expected more of that, as you might find in a Campus network. I keep this book handy, and often find myself using it as a reference when I am unsure of a conclusion I have drawn. I recommend this book to anyone looking for reference material. 5 stars (A myth-shattering, authoritative and enlightening title) - I'm sad I waited so long to read this excellent book. "Troubleshooting Campus Networks" (TCN) was published in Jul 2002, and it belongs on every network administrator's shelf -- now! This is the best networking book since Scott Haugdahl's "Network Analysis and Troubleshooting" and Eric Hall's "Internet Core Protocols." TCN will truly test your networking knowledge; you'll quickly validate the truth and discard the fiction. So many books discuss networks, but somehow distort subtle points. Authors Oppenheimer and Bardwell know their material inside-out and explain key points in clear, concise prose. Ever hear of the "37% utilization rule for Ethernet?" It's false. Think that TCP sequence numbers count packets? Wrong -- they count bytes of data. And why are sequence numbers seemingly "off by one?" Look at the difference between ordinal and cardinal numbers, described in ch. 9. TCN displays an uncanny ability to include just the information that is needed. "Reversible half-ASCII," which accounts for odd-looking NetBIOS traces, appears in ch. 12. The sections on Windows networking are first-rate, with helpful comparisons of NetBIOS with IPX, TCP, and NetBEUI. Even theoretical but damaging attack methods, like corrupting Hot Standby Router Protocol messages (ch. 8), are illuminated. I have tw...

OBJECT SHARE WinProxy For Windows

4 stars (Nice Program!) - After you purchase this, a free upgrade is availble for the 4.0 version. Winproxy shares internet connections seamlessly. The sharing is very simple to set up, but can be a little tricky. Good documentation at the Mfgrs. web site. 1 stars (Stay away from this one) - This would not work properly on my 3 Windows Me pc's. The host computer always required 3 attempts to boot up. The email support always responded within 24 hours, but they were not very knowledgeable. I tried several other internet connection sharing applications, including the newly released WinProxy 4 and found WinRoute Lite to be the best and easiest to configure. alan@computer-rescue.net 1 stars (How to waste 8 hours, 1 server, and 2 workstations) - I found this to be the worst product I have tried to use for a long time. I downloaded the eval of the product and first succeeded in destroying my NT server. I contacted their tech support and they told me it was because I had been using Microsoft's Proxy Server. In order to give them a fair chance, I built a brand new Windows 95-B machine. I tried to install their software and was told immediately to upgrade my Winsock.dll. I did. Then I installed their product and lost connectivity to my internal network. Again I contacted tech support via email. To make an 8 hour story short, their tech support gave me TCP/IP settings that simply don't work or follow any book I have ever read. Then I learned after several hours that installing WinProxy will "toast" the TCP/IP stack on Windows95. I finally did get it running at a speed of about 1200 Baud across a cable modem. I do find their tech support responsive, just not very knowledgeable. ...
