You Can Heal Your Life

5 stars ( You Can Heal Your Life ) - This book is a book of positive thought and loving tools. I recommend this book to anyone who is tired of the negativity, pessimism and other things happening that have brought you down. I changed my life and I have this book to be thankful for as a guide to a better me Love you all G 1 stars (unhappy with the condition of the book!) - I wish it was disclosed that the pages of this book I purchased had earmarks and some pages were also waterlogged. It-s All Politics - Winning in a World Where Hard Work and Talent Aren-t Enough

3 stars (C ycnical btu not to be missed) - Some realpolitik here. I can't say I enjoyed it thoroughly but I was curious and I lked learning abiout behaviors I could benefit from knowing. 4 stars (It's Not ALL Work, Can Be Fun!) - This valuable reference book explains the "in's and outs" of office politics, which are the most single factor in getting ahead in the career of your choice. This book is full of commonsense wisdom on how to get along with others and get ahead in life. Dr. Reardon is the author of THE SECRET HANDSHAKE about business psychology. She's great! Talent alone does not insure success; you must have those important relationships with the people who can best reward your creativity and intelligence. You are encouraged to 'pick your battles wisely' to deal with a difficult co-worker. When we think about politicians, automatically the words 'unethical' and 'devious' (sometimes flat-out 'lies') come to mind. In the workplace, "knowing what to say, to whom, and how and when to say it." Most of all, you will need to be able to convert enemies into your allies to win crucial support for your ideas. The only way to avoid politics at work is to avoid people. "For every locked entrance, there is a back door, window, even a chimney;" always be sure there is a way out before you crawl into a corner. It is important to remember that there is more than one way to handle any situation: good, bad or indifferent. Intuition is needed, but just as necessary is the power of persuasion.Power is a critical part of career politics. People remember those they perceive to be powerful. Power, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder. A good read, wonderful instruction in the ways of life at work and at home, and packed full of good advice. It behooves us to try to follow her instructions as close to the letter as possible. She knows what she is talking about; you can, too. ...

Never Eat Alone - And Other Secrets to Success- One Relationship at a Time

3 stars (A great read for everybody, and good advice for extroverts) - This was a very enjoyable read. The manner in which the author tells his story is very engaging and imparts some useful techniques to the reader. The type-A's out there may be able to use many of the techniques the author talks about. The rest of us, however, will be left wondering if all these things could have possible happened to one person. Truth be told I haven't read the last fifty pages. My dog decided he wanted to taste the author's work, and frankly, not being an extrovert, I did not feel compelled to pick up another copy for the last few chapters. 5 stars (Great book about breaking through the glass floor) - "Never Eat Alone" gives some excellent advice regarding developing relationships. Ferrazzi starts off by stating you really need to begin by finding your own passion and mission. Additionally, to build strong relationships you need to ask, "What can I offer?" rather than "What can I get?" Ferrazzi has an excellent writing style that is easy to understand and read. He gives some great suggestions regarding how to "ping" casual contacts and keeping in touch with people. Ferrazzi is a "follow up" maniac as he states you should continually follow up with people even if you don't hear back from them. I guess that depends on your viewpoint. There isn't much to like about this book. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking to be able to develop their relationships. 5 out of 5 stars. 5 stars (Simply worth it) - I do not buy many books. I only buy the ones that I am interested in keeping. If I only want to read a book, I simply get it in the library. After reading a few reviews of "Never Eat Alone" I went to my local bookstore to have a closer look at it. Although I definitely liked the look of the book, my first reaction was "No, too expensive". And it is expensive! But then I sat down to read some passages. The more I read, the more interested I was becoming... You ...

The Fred Factor - How Passion in Your Work and Life Can Turn the Ordinary into the Extraordinary

5 stars (great tool for team and conference) - I thought this book was extremely helpful with ideas on how to improve service and thereby improve business 5 stars (The Fred Factor) - We purchased "The Fred Factor" to use as part of an all day retreat in our department. During the earlier part of the day, we discussed the previous fiscal year results, our plans for the current year and then used questions on the book for discussion of what it would be like to be a "Fred" and work and live with people like him. All were requested to read the book before the day, and so it proved a helpful backdrop to the focus of our day. Our groups had some interesting perspectives...great tool for team building! 5 stars (Nice review of the value of going the extra mail) - This short book focuses on a mailman Mark Sanborn met, a man named Fred. When the author first met Fred, Fred took an effort to get to know his new customer, and find ways to do a better job as a mailman. This book about the value of doing a better job, how to build relationships, and why we should take initiative. In short by going the extra mile we'll have a better life, and others will benefit. It is a good book, and a short book. It is well written. The book is entertaining and at the same time makes many good points. The first of four sections covers how the author met Fred the mailman, and how very quickly the author realized that Fred was a superstar mail carrier. The basics of what a "Fred" is are explored, and then the author mentions sightings of other "Freds." The second section explains how you can become a Fred. Basically you need to build relationships with others so you know them well enough to then be able to be create, take initiative and make a difference. The third section gives pointers on how you can help others grow into being Freds. The basic steps are to: 1) Find - how do you recognize a Fred 2) Reward - how should Freds be rewarded 3) Educate - how help people improve thei...

The One Minute Manager Anniversary Ed - The World-s Most Popular Management Method

5 stars (Got a minute?) - A simple, straightforward story that provides handy advice for anyone who has to manage people. To boot, most should be able to finish it in a few hours time. Truly a classic, I give it 5 stars easy. Other self-help books I liked include "The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight Loss Plan, A Pocket Guide To What Works. Happy reading! 5 stars (Must read for anyone) - This book is a must read for everyone whether they are a boss, parent or just someone who is interested in becoming more effective in their life. This book as well as the others by these authors ("The Present" and "Who Moved my Cheese") contain powerful messages with an economy of words, they are all around 100 pages each. I have read everything I can find by them and have shared them with family and friends. 5 stars (simple and direct) - This smart little book is easy to read and goes straight to the point. As its title suggests, it can be read quickly and you'll be able to benefit from its teaching right away, which makes it a good example in itself for a book on time management and productivity. There's no groundbreaking concepts or magical tricks here, but it will remind you of a few essentials that can make all the difference... ...

Motivational Interviewing- Second Edition- Preparing People for Change

5 stars (A new classic) - If change were easy, a lot of us (psychologists, counselors, health care providers) would be out of work. Still, that doesn't stop us from complaining about those clients and patients who just won't do what we think is in their best interest. Motivational Interviewing, a "client-centered, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation," was developed specifically to help faciliate change in "resistant" populations and has been embraced by addictions treatment and general health care professionals alike. The entirely re-written, highly readable, second edition of MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING updates readers on the state of the art and science of MI, and provides a practical guide for helping people to make all kinds of behavior changes. The book opens with a brief review of the converging lines of inquiry that supported the development of MI and an overview of core concepts such as readiness to change, ambivalence, and an interpersonally-based understanding of motivation. The second section is a guide to practice. While "spirit" is emphasized over technique, this section is filled with practical advice on how to increase motivation for change while minimizing resistance. A new chapter on ethics addresses the concerns that arise when attempting to motivate clients to do something they aren't sure they want to do. Consistent with the method's client-centered approach, the third section constitutes a chapter on learner-centered training in MI. The fourth section - comprising about half the volume - includes diverse contributed chapters on applications of MI. These include a discussion of MI and the Stages of Change model with which it is often associated; an excellent review of efficacy research in MI; adaptations of MI such as brief advice and MI with couples or groups; and applications with specific populations and settings. The application chapters necessarily vary in format but share in common careful consideration of the rationale for M...

The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective Teens

5 stars (Breakthrough Book!) - I purchased this book for my teenager before sending her off to college as a freshman. She doesn't like to read, and basically dislikes books, so I was hoping she would at least skim through it and pick up some of the principles in this book. To my surprise she started reading it and never put it down! I have not read the book, but there must be something very practical and relevant in this book if it grabbed my 18 year old daughters attention! She thought it was great! 1 stars (Condescending Fluff) - It's appalling to me that this book has such a high rating as of today. I received this book from a relative when I was 14, and its condescending tone combined with the fact that it tries too hard to be "hip" effectively turned me off to it. Had I receieved "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" I may have read it. Five years later and after reading some glowing amazon.com reviews, I decided to give it a fair shot. Unfortunately, my initial impression was dead-on. This book is filled to the brim with vague fluff and moralistic, cliches. Despite that the book is marketed as written "by a teen for teens," Covey writes in a heavy-handed, righteous manner comparable to an authoritarian parent. Covey bludgeons the reader with anti-sex, anti-smoking, anti-anything-the-masses-think-is-bad propaganda. He neither cautions in an objective manner, nor enlightens. Instead, he appeals to vanity, which we know teenagers are full of (*cough*HYPOCRITE*cough*). In his diatribe against smoking, he mentions TERRIBLE side effects like *gasp* bad breath and... YELLOW FINGERTIPS! Let's not forget-- teenagers think they're invincible! They would NEVER take heed if we warned them that smoking causes CANCER AND DEATH. And therein lies the problem with the premise of the whole book: It doesn't give enough credit to the teen population as a whole. It presupposes that most teens are ignorant about life. NEWSFLASH: Time does NOT equal wisdom. S...

The Fred Factor - How passion in your work and life can turn the ordinary into the extraordinary

4 stars (A Must Read) - I thought this book was very motivational. It makes you understand how much further you can go and how much more you receive( success, referrals, whatever) by just being you! Very inspirational, a must read for sales or any profession dealing with the public. 5 stars (Inspiring!) - Many Americans are unhappy because they were never raised to be a "Fred". No wealth or possessions can make up for an unhealthy and usually self centered attitude in life. Choose to be a "Fred" and start living with and giving much joy! 5 stars (Not for the lazy or unmotivated......) - This book is a great "how to" make a difference and impact people's lives every day. This is not a fiction book for you to just enjoy and read---although it is a good "read". It is a book which will inspire you to take action. It isn't a story about Fred. It is your story and the story of how you can create an extraordinary life for yourself and the people you touch. If you are a person of action and want to make a difference in people's lives, then read the book, embrace it's concepts and become a Fred yourself. ...

Think and Grow Rich

4 stars (Determination to Grow Rich!) - Determination is the key to success! How oft we dream to reach our goals and get what we want? It's the determination to Grow Rich - Get what you want and make up your mind till you succeed. The theme of this book is absolutely tempting and convincing to believe and after reading the book, it really boost up ego and motivates to grow in riches and succeed. By riches, do we mean just money? I guess not. Because this book is all about building up your own self esteem and living up to your desires till opportunity strikes your door and welcomes you. Napolean Hill in his book has set an example of the Edison Dictating Machine and Barnes took the opportunity to talk to Edison and suggested him that he can sell the product when Edison's salesmen were not enthu to sell it. Thus, Barnes became a business associate and proved he can 'Think and grow rich'. Thus, with yet more examples, the book gives an insight to use mind power and use the sixth senses and be persistent and determined until you get what you want. However, sometimes it's growing Rich in many areas and missed out is 'money power' which the author says to believe in self and things you can do. Success is ever personal and whatever you define it, you grow Rich - rich in thoughts, rich in awareness, in accumulating wealth, knowledge, etc. A good book for self betterment and feeling on high spirits. Good pick. 1 stars (One HUGE problem mars this book) - Hill offers the formula for success from Andrew Carnegie, giving suggestion, planning, decision making and other formula for becoming a success in buisness or anything you want to attempt. However, I was always troubled by ruthless buisness cut throats and what they were probably thinking to justify their practices. Where did that come from? Could it be they are just greedy? It's a little more complex than that. Since this seems to be the "Bible" for most buisness people,I decided to read the book. I found what I was lo...

Influence- The Psychology of Persuasion

5 stars (Most Useful Book You Will Ever Read) - I loved this book, it teaches you that getting what you want isn't always bad and how you can make other peole happy to help you out. The book has a good mix of interesting anecdotes mixed in with scientific fact. I think it's great for anyone who is tired of getting pushed around. 5 stars (It is so simple) - Once you understand the various systems and programs that make us up, the whole ordeal of being human becomes so much easier. This book can take you a long way towards that goal. 5 stars (A well researched study on human behavior) - I have long been a student of human behavior. It fascinates me. Naturally, I found this book to be fascinating as well. The book is well researched and does more than present one person's opinion. It summarizes actual reserach results from many, many studies that demonstrate the behaviors under discussion. Reciprocity? Consistency? These are some of the concepts discussed and are immediately applicable both as a tool of influence as well as an understanding of our own behaviors and how to protect ourselves from "forced" behaviors that we are programmed to do even when we don't want to. Yes, we are programmed to perform certain behaviors, and when we don't, we suffer socially. Naturally, this provides a means for some people to take advantage of us. This book gives us an understanding of the behavior and therefore a reasonable defense. So, you don't believe we have automatic programmed responses? Then explain how the Chinese so effectively pursuaded American P.O.W.'s to defend communism during the Korean War. Then explain how Moonies got so many people to contribute to their religion when people just didn't want to. And explain why the effectiveness of that technique waned over time. Can't? Cialdini can. And convincingly. ...

Chicken Soup for the Military Wife-s Soul - Stories to Touch the Heart and Rekindle the Spirit Chic

4 stars (Second-hand Review) - I did not read this myself, but I sent it to my friend who's husband (my best friend of about 12 years) is in Iraq. She said it gave her a good cry and made her feel a better, which the latter part is what I was going for. So from her review to me, I would recommend it. 4 stars (Can't Wait for More.) - Chicken Soup for the Soul books just get better and better. I'm waiting for my next Military Wife's edition and am hoping for a Military Children's edition as well. I gave this 4 stars only because I save 5 for those that excede my expectations. 5 stars (The most AMAZING and ESSENTIAL book for any Military Spouse) - I have read many of the Chicken Soup books, but being a military spouse this is the one that really touched my heart the most! Because it allows you to know their are other spouses out there who feel the same pain of deployment, and problems that being a military family will bring. ...

How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci- Seven Steps to Genius Every Day

2 stars (Kind of Pointless...) - The book was very well written and i must say that i really did enjoy the introduction chapters which was filled with bits of Leonardo's life, work, and other mentions of factual knowledge that was quite interesting. However, once the core of the book started to unfold it became very dry reading and the "self-help"'ish way the book is written becomes monotonous and i began to feel that Gelb himself is just too over enthused about Leonardo Da Vinci. I agree that he is a very noteworthy person to idolize and model your own life around to some extent but in some of the sections dealing with the senses and "what to do's" it seemed like he was stretching a bit and making Leonardo too godlike for his own right. Also, another qualm i had with the book was when he listed his own group of people he felt were noteworthy and i feel that it was tactless to do so because your ranking people from different genres, walks of lfe, skills and talents, and placing them as if it were the olympics in competition and it seemed to be another way to just give more praise to Leonardo in his fascination and obsession to put Da Vinci on some sort of pedestal. Again, i feel Leonardo was a brilliant man but to write a book solely on the content of how to think like him, i feel, is pointless and has no substance because he himself is not writing the book but only a mere fan who has never met the man, has no relevance to the time period Da Vinci lived in, and, again, ISNT DA VINCI writing a book about how to think like him. Many people reading this may say "well, what about biographies, those are people who may not have known the person they are writing about". Very true, but this is not a biography. Instead this is a list of thing you can do yourself to mock the way Da Vinci decided things, thought, and lived his life. These are purely things that only the living specimen that is Da Vinci would know. Any other person writing the book about the mechanics in which ...

Body for Life- 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength

4 stars (Thank you Bill) - The approach presented by Bill Phillips in "Body for Life" worked fine for me. However, the problem is that you have to have a real commitment and a really strong will power to follow the regime presented by the author. Also, in my opinion, there is too much focus on the looks and too little on the health. I think the latter is more important than the former. I have recently found a book that shifts the attention more towards health and overall wellbeing and it gives you no trouble whatsoever to follow simple rules for food combinations, body cleansing etc. Although I have a lot of respect for Bill Phillips as my first coach I think that "Can We Live 150 Year"s is a superior book to "Body for Life". Sorry Bill. 5 stars (My second copy of this book!) - A terrific book and a great program. This book is actually my second copy, since my first copy completely fell apart after so much use. It is truly a fantastic way to get in shape. I had suffered a couple of serious injuries and have been unable to work out much for the last year, but before the injuries I was well on my way to transforming my body for life. Now, I'm mended and ready to start all over again. It's amazing to see how quickly this program changes your body - with much less effort and sacrifice than a lot of other "get fit quick" programs. The eating for life portion of the book is a little tough to follow at times, since I do enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine now and then, but I just modify it, work out a little harder and enjoy my little treat now and then anyway. The free day allows you to eat whatever you want once a week so you don't feel too deprived, but I found that after you start seeing the changes in your body, you'll be reluctant to just pig out. It's nice to treat yourself without feeling guilty. Buy the book, follow the program and you really will see a completely new body in your mirror in a few months! 5 stars (This program is AWESOME!!!) - Guys don't waste y...

Now- Discover Your Strengths

4 stars (Don't buy this book used!!!!!!!) - The book requires the user to take an on-line preference test to determine your "strengths". The publisher controls the process by printing a code on the inside of the jacket cover. Once the code is used, it cannot be reused. Thus, anyone who buys the book from someone who has already used the code to take the test will be unable to take the test. The book is almost worthless without the ability to take the online test. 5 stars (Useful business tool) - We purchased this great book and another must read book, Optimal Thinking--How To Be Your Best Self, for our customer service teams. This book gave us tremendous insight into individual and team talents and strengths. We then used Optimal Thinking to make the most of the identified strengths and to protect worst event scenarios when weaknesses could have severe consequences (example: Katrina). I think that the days of ignoring such weaknesses with "just be positive, it will all work out fine" are over for most of us. 5 stars (Play To Your Strengths) - The follow up to "First, Break All The Rules" (another excellent book), "Now" focuses on discovering and unlocking your strengths so that ulitmate you are playing with your best foot forward. Included when you buy this book, is a password that allows you to go on-line and take a test compossed by the same people who wrote the book, that will allow you to see what your top strenghts are. 48 Days To The Work You Love

2 stars (Not worth it) - I listen to Dave Ramsey every day and read his books, I really think he's on the ball with his advice and helping people a lot. I can also understand why he advertises and endorses Dan Miller; Miller's heart is clearly in the right place and Im sure he's amazing as a one-on-one job counseler. But this book isn't anything special. I just got off the job hunt and I have to say that much of this advice can be found for free, on the internet, and is part of the whole college experience (which is about finding what you like to do and studying it in further detail). The book mainly says, "look and find out what you really want to do", "go find companies that do it", "let your enthusiasm show" and "negotiate shrewdly". Yes, this is all good advice, but its mostly common sense - you dont need to spend $20 to learn this advice. So, you know, maybe Im too young and optimistic, but I really dont see the point or need for a book like this. Dave Ramsey, yes absolutely - everyone should listen to him. But Miller and his book - no, unless you go directly to him for job counseling. This book is much too general and non-commital to be of much use. 5 stars (48 Days to the Work You Love) - This book provides many practical and very helpful approaches to finding a good job. I had just lost a job that I loved for 28 years and needed a refresher to help me find another job to love. I found the book very helpful. 1 stars (Worth neither the time nor money) - This book essentially turned out to be a hardcover advertisement to buy more of the author's material in order to "really discover the work you love." It eluded to proving helpful for a moment with discovering more about ones potential vocation, but then gave YET ANOTHER reference to his website where you could purchase the information for another $37.50. The minor amount of basic material is the same as can be found on most any career counseling website, but with constant advertisements for the author's o...

Connecting- The Mentoring Relationships You Need To Succeed In Life

3 stars (Practical Yet Partial) - This book is based on a simple finding: "Research on mid-career, contemporary leaders led to [the] conclusion - few leaders finish well". Further, in the case where leaders did finish well, "their relationship to another person significantly enhanced their development". Thus the stage is set for the subject of mentoring, which the authors describe as (the concise definition): a relational experience through which one person empowers another by sharing God-given resources. Stanley and Clinton are well respected authorities in the field of leadership development, and this book represents a popular and "lightweight" version of far larger tomes, so providing easy access to their ideas. The authors focus mainly on the types of mentor who may enrich our lives, and how. The book explores nine common mentor types, and "ten commandments" required for successful mentoring. Two further types of mentoring receive special attention, namely The Constellation Model (a relational network of upward, downward, and lateral mentoring), and Peer Co-Mentoring (mutual mentoring with a close friend). The emphasis on the "relational experience" of mentoring is arguably both the greatest strength and the greatest weakness of the book. On the one hand, it offers one - in the words of the publishers - "access to the wisdom, experience, vision, and direction of those who have gone before". On the other hand, there is a great deal of emphasis on the values, skills, etc. which are transferred to the one being mentored, yet limited appreciation of how mentoring might point to God. The authors hardly touch on the type of mentoring which focuses on the "encounter with the Holy", and the sovereign grace required for a Christian leader to succeed and survive. In short, it tends towards a "Latin" theology of mentoring. The book has a strong foundation in research and experience, and for this alone it is well worth a look. It is characte...
