Biological Psychology with CD-ROM and InfoTrac

4 stars (cells over systems) - I'm a biopsychologist. Kalat is a very good writer with a gift for explaining difficult concepts and for keeping technical issues interesting. I chose his Intro Psych book for my classes for just this reason. My response to this book is a little more mixed. Biopsychology ranges broadly from cellular to systems level research. This book does well at the former level. It gets a little more deeply into the biochemistry than I would prefer but does so well and is impressively up to date. It does less well at the systems level literature. For example, it defines two common imaging terms incorrectly: PET and rCBF (mixing them up with SPECT and PET respectively). Overall, I like the book and chose it for my biopsychology class but every instructor needs to choose based on their own needs for depth and for emphasis. 4 stars (as for textbooks.....) - as for textbooks for a biopsych class, this book is certainly interesting and the enhanced cd is definitely a plus. this book has not yet been used as a pillow for a sudden study break nap. the pictures are clear, the writing is friendly, and it's too bad that more texts can't be like this! 4 stars (Great textbook!) - I'm a freshman Psychology student at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands)... I used this book to study for my course Biological Psychology (duh!)... Anyway, this book is very organized, good summaries and a clear explanation of all the important concepts... Even if you don't have much knwoledge of biology, you will understand this book... at least I did... ...

Cognitive Neuroscience- Second Edition

4 stars (Not for those without background) - This book is not intended for the general reader, reader with cellular neuroscience background, but has a target audience of advanced undergraduate or graduate level students with relevant background. Also would be useful for the psychology professional without specific or with dated cognitive neuroscience background, or others intending a research or applied clinical career in the area. Appropriate background would necessarily be at least an undergraduate course in cognitive psychology, with additional help provided by biological psychology or a medical professional in neurology. Discussions of principles and mechanisms are at a "functional machinery" level and thus would not make sense to those without some previous training in those principles. It just isn't a basic text, thus, no glossary of basic terms is included. Yes, the material is both abstract and complex, but so is brain function, and we are just beginning to learn. There are very, very few textbooks that survey this area which only became a separate field of study sometime around 1986. Other reading material in the field consists entirely of professional level chapters in compiled and edited texts. The only other broad survey text that I know of is Marie Banich's book on the related area of Cognitive Neuropsychology. 3 stars (Additions to this book) - This book is more like a bunch of journals bound together. The authors introduce new words without previous qualifications. For example, in the chapter of binocular vision, they added spatial normalization and various other models, without telling what exactly they are! Also when I tried to find these terms in relatively basic texts I was unable to find them. Same was the case with internet. It is definitly for advanced learner. (I am doing PhD in neuroscience and still finding it very difficult)To clarify zillions of issue I have to sit with my mentor. Although she is very nice but still the discussion needs a...

Biological Psychology- An Introduction to Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience

4 stars (Great Introductory Text) - I have used both the first and second editions of this text in courses for first-year graduate students in a Psy.D. program. The text is clear, the illustrations excellent, as are the color overheads. This is at exactly the right level for students who will be clinicians using this information in understanding and dealing with clients directly (as opposed to researchers). 5 stars (good end of the second millenium) - I had the chance to give a overlook to prof. M.Rosenzweig text "Biological Psychology...", talking with my assistant teacher, I said, at last a nice, and good text for undergraduate student that are not going to be medicine student, but other profesional. This is the text for a change in the teaching of neuroscience; the result of it use will be clear at december 2000. the reasons for this: - clear use of history. - great use of design in each theme treated. - all the aids (cd, etc) are exactly what a beginnig student need. - the use of real neuroanatomy part, are perfectly complement by the pictures, diagram in the text. profs. M. Rosenzweig, A. leiman & S.M. Breedlove thanks from Chile. 2 stars (Please try again Mr.Rozenweig) - This book is a course textbook for my course, but to be honest I find it badly set out, espacially in the index where it's impossible to find anything. I know the guy's an expert in his field but the relevent information is hard to extract from the very dry tone. I've been tempted on more than one occasion to simply use it as a computer stand. This may sound like any other textbook but when you compare this to Kalat's book of the same name, the difference is unbelievable. As a student I'll take this rare opportunity to say 'good try Mr.Rozenweig, but I think you should take it back and work on it a little more' ...

Influence- Science and Practice 4th Edition

5 stars (Good guide to the tactics of persuasion.) - Right away, buyers should know that Cialdini has produced a less-expensive version of this book. "Influence: Science and Practice" is designed as a textbook for classroom instruction. So, it has things like chapter summaries and questions that can be assigned as homework. However, the other book "Influence: the psychology of persuasion," is designed for a more general audience. The content is basically the same, but it omits the classroom-oriented layout. It's also cheaper. If you are a student who is buying textbooks online, this is probably what you (or rather, your professors) want. If not, get the other one. Both books focus on persuasive tactics. This is not a theoretical work trying to lay out a strategy of communication, like "Getting to Yes." This is a toolkit, designed to give the reader a selection of tools for specific circumstances. That is not to say that Cialdini lacks an understanding of more strategic thinking, just that it isn't the focus here. The underlying theory is that people tend to be hardwired to respond to certain stimuli in predictable ways. The book tells you what those stimuli are, that is, how to push people's buttons. And it does a very good job, which is why Cialdini has demand for two versions of the same book. I'm not going to list all of the tactics because the table of contents does that and, because they're detailed, they're difficult to understand without reading the book. But, they all have some basis in science and their effectiveness is empirically demonstrable, so you can trust that they work. The best part of this book, for me, was becoming more conscious of how others, including politicians, advertisers, and bosses, try to manipulate me. Cialdini deserves respect just for opening people's eyes, but he goes a step further by explaining ways to deal with the constant manipulation that is inherent in human communication. The only problems I see are that t...

Counseling the Culturally Diverse- Theory and Practice

5 stars (Counseling the Culturally Diverse: Theory & Practice) - Sue & Sue have revised their book with wonderful results. This time they include a section "Clinical Implications" in each chapter, this adds to the information and helps with the teaching of this necessary subject. As usual Sue & Sue are thorough and thoughtful in their presentation. They also include the notion of Organizational Culture as a needed subject of study. I highly recommend this book for any clinican and professor who works in the field of psychology. Dr. Gabrielle M. Guedet, Ph.D., MFT 4 stars (Good Book, some problems with it.) - This was required reading for a class I was taking in multicultural issues. It was very interesting but it was hard to read parts of it because of the nature of confronting our biases that the book addresses. I did have some issues with the way the book approached discussing the role of white people in society. It was almost as if the authors wanted me to feel bad about being white. Overall it was very informative and gave really good examples and implications for clinical use. 1 stars (A Biased Look at Bias in America) - I must add my disappointment to many others who have already posted here. This book is required reading in my masters in counseling course, and I was hoping for something that would provide valuable guidelines to reach across cultures in counseling. Unfortunately, Sue & Sue make it quite clear that the only reaching across cultures to be done is by White Americans. Whites are painted as being responsible for all bias in our country while non-Whites are to be held responsible for nothing. Period. Just because these two authors (or any authors, for that matter) are considered the experts in their field does not mean they are necessarily correct. It is impossible for any human being to approach any subject without bias, yet overall Sue & Sue hold only Whites accountable for recognizing and correcting their biases. At the same time...

Intentional Interviewing and Counseling with InfoTrac and CD-ROM - Facilitating Client Development

5 stars (The difference between a bartender and a counselor!) - This book is an excellent resource for the beginning counseling student; a wonderful introduction to the concept of the "intentional interview." This text will aid in mastering basic listening and influencing skills, as well as illustrate how to conduct a full interview using only listening skills. The authors break down the interviewing process into an easy to understand format, complete with case study illustrations. This book is not only a superb introduction to the intentional interview, it can also serve as a resource for those who are interested in honing their microskills. After all, this is what marks the difference between a bartender and a counselor! 5 stars (Novice) - For a Master's level clinical skills course I was required to read this text. While I initially thought it was more expensive than I wanted to pay for a textbook, I was pleasantly surpised that it was well worth the price. Not only did I learn skills, that I thought I had already mastered (a little cocky uh?) but I learned skills I didn't possess. I have since graduated and am working in the field, yet I still find it a useful resource and as a reminder not to get too cocky because one always can use REMINDERS about how to do something well! 4 stars (Intentional Interviewing and Counseling : Facilitating Clien) - The book was easy to understand and follow. I recommend the text to anyone that is involved in the counseling profession, teaching, and/or has contact with the public. The text teaches the basic techniques of listening and attending behaviors. It wasn't until I read this book that I realized how little I, and others listen to one another. Excellent for undergraduate and graduate level counseling programs. Very helpful text book but is not a keeper. ...

Body for Life for Women- A Woman-s Plan for Physical and Mental Transformation

4 stars (A real tool for attaining health and fitness for life) - Body for Life for Women should be considered an essential guide for women's preventive heath. Because it is focused specifically on the unique health and fitness needs and problems encountered by women, it is much more valuable for women than general health or diet texts. While it promotes a plan of "12 weeks to a fabulous body"; to see it as a mere diet or fitness book sells short its real value. A diet book may help us (temporarily) lose a few pounds; this book aims to show us how to create a healthy body in which we can live independently throughout our lives. As a spokesperson on health, Dr. Peeke is the real thing. She is an expert on the most current understanding of nutrition, preventive health and women's issues. The book is well written, inspiring and accessible. It gives women, especially those of us over 40, real hope and guidance as we wonder why "what we have always done" to stay fit is not working any more. I found especially interesting the section on life milestones, which describes a woman's health priorities at each stage of life. The mind principles, which urge us to examine the attitudes that shape our behavior, are a wake-up call. Dr. Peeke is a big fan of the Nike slogan "Just Do It". In this book, she tells us exactly what it is that we must just do and provides the tools and motivation to keep doing it. 5 stars (You won't believe it!) - I have completed my 12 week program and am astounded by the results. I'm 53 and a dancer but I never thought my body would return to this level of fitness. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I don't intend to stop my regimen because I feel so good and the weight keeps coming off. I've already added almost six pounds to my muscle mass and my fat percentage is now 23.8%. Lory Reyes 5 stars (Set for success) - Will "Body for Life for Women" be as successful as the original "Body for Life" by Bill Philips? At the moment we don't know, bu...

Introduction to Psychology - Gateways to Mind and Behavior with Gateways to Psychology- Visual Guid

1 stars (review of gateways to physchology ordering process) - I have not received my book yet. It has almost been a month. I have e-mailed the seller several times but she always seems to have a reason why I haven't recieved it. I e-mailed her 2 days ago with a request to refund my money but she said that it should have been shipped by now, that it was at her parents house. At this point, I am very dissatisfied with this particular service. I must also add that I ordered app. 10 books via your service and had no problems at all. 5 stars (Intro. to Psychology Text) - Excellent description of text. Crisis Intervention Strategies with InfoTrac

2 stars (Skip the profanity) - A fairly good text, it probably covers the field better than other available sources. However, the selection of illustrations seem to be chosen based on how much profanity they can include. I realize that crisis situations involve people who don't monitor their usage, but why include every F--- and other curse word when they aren't needed to convey the meaning. I teach large classes and probably won't adopt this title because of the gratuitous inclusion of verbal static. 5 stars (An invaluable tool in the field of mental health.) - Gilliland and James have successfully created an extremely comprehensive introduction to crisis intervention methodology in this text. While lacking some historical perspective on the development of this methodology, the book incorporates a variety tools useful to the mental health professional. These tools well make up for the exclusion of a short history on crisis intervention. The authors clearly defined various helping situations (i.e., suicide, sexual assault, spousal abuse, and chemical dependency) and demonstrated how their applications assisted in the resolution of these issues. Furthermore, Gilliland and James added the sections on extreme circumstances, such as hostage taking, as well as professional concerns, such as burnout. For those entering the field, this text provides a wealth of information. Those that are well seasoned will still find this a useful reference. On first glance, I was surprised to find this text so easily read, particularly when dealing with such a serious subject, yet I have returned to it time and again in my own practice for ideas and direction. Thank you. ...

Psychology in Action

5 stars (An excellent text...) - An excellent textbook that helps global as well as analytical learners by providing both written information as well as a wealth of charts and pictures. I used this for my General Psychology Class. It was probably one of the first textbooks I used that I could understand, being that I learn by looking at pictures rather than reading. It helped me. It covers Psychology generally and doesn't focus on any one disorder in particular, so there are a lot of disorders listed and a good amount of information on each, but they are not explored in depth, you'd need a textbook or book especially for say Depression, in order to get the most information on it. But it does a good job for what it is. I hope this review helped you. :) 5 stars (Psychology Text Book) - A terrific general psych book for the beginning of my psychology study. Very general, good intro into basic study. Easy to study from. 4 stars (Very interesting; it gives both the nature and nurture point) - good book ...

Abnormal Psychology- Fourth Edition W-CD

5 stars (2nd Edition ISBN # 0393956962 Is Hardcover, Not Cloth) - This is an excellent, perhaps the best, Abnormal Psychology Textbook. You can save over $100 by going with this older edition. It is not too different than the current edition and can easily be updated. Amazon Marketplace is currently offering the 2nd edition as low as 53 cents. This is an outstanding bargain. 4 stars (Organized with interesting case studies. Easy reading.) - The text in paperback form was quite inexpensive. The book was organized into easily digestible chapters with insightful DSM classifications. The chapter on sexual disorders was quite explicit. Our instructor skipped it in lecture. ...

The New Feminine Brain - How Women Can Develop Their Inner Strengths- Genius- and Intuition

5 stars (The New Feminine Brain) - Not as easy to understand by the lay person as I had hoped, but great information. 5 stars (The New Feminine Brain : How Women Can Develop Their Inner Strengths, Genius, and Intuition) - This is a very unique book.....I found it fascinating. 5 stars (A Must-Read for All - including men) - Mona Lisa Schulz, MD and PhD, is an amazing intuitive who has synthesized the physical, emotional and neurological aspects of women to describe "how they work." She has given us the power to understand our bodies in order to create a more balanced, enjoyable life. Her examples are brilliant. Her synthesis is cutting edge. A must-read for all!!! ...
