5 stars (An interesting, and mechanical way to approach meeting with the opposite sex) - This book is absolutely filled with interesting theories on the art of social interaction and meeting women for dating and sex. 1/2 autobiography of the author Neil Strauss's social life for the last two years, and 1/2 story of the dark side of "The Game" in which a group of "Pick Up Artists" move in a house together, and it eventually collapses on itself. Looking at the book, you wonder just what exactly is "The Game" and when does one stop looking at life and meeting people not as a "set" or group, drop the "routines" and play in the real world instead. 5 stars (Trust REAL reviews.) - Please note that the review below, and most if not all reviews with 1-2 star reviews, especially those calling members of the community described in this book are all by one man who i shall not name, as he is merely a disgruntled man with a vendetta against this community of individuals who's goals is self-improvement, please take a look at reviews done by the top 50 and real name reviewers. 1 stars (Wait for the Movie) - If you like to watch the TV shows "Friends", "Coupling", "How I met your mother", "Sex in the City", "The Single Guy" or "Nova" and you're looking for a story to read, than this book is for you. If you haven't read a book for pleasure for a long time but your looking for a "How To" book, then this book isn't for you. Read the book "The Sensuous Man" instead. I listened to Neil Strauss at a book signing. He "tours" with self proclaimed losers who call them themselves former losers who sell "How To Pickup Women" services. They sell nothing but air --- and that's free. If you're looking for a story but not a book reader, wait for the movie coming to theaters in 2008. ...

Mother-Daughter Wisdom - Creating a Legacy of Physical and Emotional Health

5 stars (Mother-Daughter Wisdom) - I just got my book and have started reading it. Its great. I had seen Christiane Northrup on tv and she is great. She makes you think...."why didn't I think of that-its so simple" 1 stars (Cliches, platitudes and old chestnuts) - As mother of two teenagers, I had high hopes for this book, but I almost gagged on the number of trite sayings this author can cram into a paragraph. You will find "great" insights like: mothers are very important in an infant's life, two year olds are announcing their independence, and it's important to keep channels of communication open with your daughter even when things aren't going smoothly. And I paid how much money to learn THAT?? If you have had your eyes and ears open for any length of time, you will find nothing new in this book. It is all hype and marketing with no substance. And wisdom? That's the biggest hype of all. Save your money and just go talk to your daughter. 5 stars (Wow! Awesome Book! Mothers of Daughters: Get This Book!) - First off, this book makes a great gift to anyone you know who has a daughter regardless of age. It makes a great baby shower gift, also. I just want to start by saying, I first saw this book and I skimmed through it, but didn't buy it. I was very skeptical. I am a well read individual and I was thinking: "I don't need another lame self help book by some would be expert that sits on my shelf that I never read. My daughter's five: there is a bunch of birth, pregnancy stuff in the book. I am past those stages and don't need a book that covers stuff I don't need." However, I ended up going back and getting the book. I am SO glad I did. Now I am here to say: this book is amazing. Reading the book made me want to read all of her books. I took so many notes and have already started using some of what she wrote. The Silent War- Ministering to Those Trapped in Deception of Pornography

5 stars (Helping Those Trapped in Pornography!!) - Henry Rogers doesn't pull any punches, here, in his expose of this tawdry topic, but all too common problem we have in our society. The chapters of his book include many different fronts, and cover the personal and private lives of those who have been harmed by pornography. He has included his own story, but there are some really good chapters, such as Chapter 4- She Has a Name, whereupon he cites Elis, Stefani, Amy, Kristen, and Julie, and he states that "their reason for existence is to satisfy lust, and that their names are insignificant." A truly troubling thought. Then there is Chapter 7 - VCR - Very Corrupt Rendevouz, and he states that due to the onset of this kind of technology in 98% of the homes, television permits you to be entertained in your living room by people you would not have in your home. And there is the other point that men are prone to sexual fantasy and the TV feeds their appetites quite well. Chapter 6 is another great chapter-Satan's Dynamic Duo: Hugh and Larry, and the chapter essentially focuses on Larry Flynt and Hugh Hefner. Hefner's father was apparently a descendant of William Bradford, the Pilgrim, and Flynt's parents raised him as a staunch Methodist, and while he went to college, he bought into Kinsey's teachings, hook, line, and sinker. Larry Flynt apparently met Jimmy Carter's sister, Ruth Carter Stapleton in 1977, and when he claimed to have seen the Apostle Paul on the "Hustler" jet in November, 1977, he is reported to have fallen to his knees, and Stapleton baptized him. However, he never left the pornography business. There are so many good chapters, and they're all provocative reading. Toward the end of the book, there is help for those who are seeking it, and for those who want to help. The Minds of Boys - Saving Our Sons From Falling Behind in School and Life

5 stars (Good Book!) - I read this and it gives great alternatives for boys that are having a hard time in school. I definetly recommend it! 5 stars (The Boys' Educational Crisis) - Gurian and Stevens use scientific research to diagnose what every alert parent and educator has been thinking for over a century--boys' brains and bodies were NOT made for the modern western educational system. Our system forces boys to be taught in sedentary settings, using learning styles unfit for their masculine minds. Gurian and Stevens begin by documenting the boys' crisis in education. Such research, though not novel, when pulled together like this, rattles our cages enough to gain and keep our attention. However, the true strength of "The Minds of Boys" is its thorough, detailed, specific, field-tested solutions. In area after area, "Saving Our Sons from Falling Behind in School and Life" empowers parents to equip their sons to overcome the many obstacles that they face in the school setting. One can only hope that educators themselves will read and heed the advice of Gurian and Stevens. If they do, then the next hundred years could produce a much more boy-friendly educational system. Taking the Field- Women- Men- and Sports

5 stars (A feminist man who's both smart and honest) - Here are a few of the many reasons I keep reading everything Mike Messner writes: 1) He seems to take the feminist "personal is political" slogan to heart, revealing much more of himself and his own questions and vulnerabilities than most other male writers. 2) He uses both academic and journalistic techniques to research his topics and support his theses. 3) He lacks the arrogance of many experts, retaining an open mind as he delibertely attempts to look at things in original ways. 4) The topic of this book -- and several of his others -- continues to fascinate me. By looking at how we "do gender" in a sporting context, we come to understand so much about how and why any and all women and men behave as we do. Highly recommended. -- Mariah Burton Nelson 5 stars (Putting Sport into the Center of Gender) - USC Sociologist Michael Messner, who has spent the majority of his academic career studying issues of sport, masculinity, and power has written a truly significant book with Taking the Field: Women, Men, and Sports. The book finds a place for much of his previous research, as well as the research of other gender and sport scholars, to elicit the mechanisms in which gender is produced, reproduced, and contested in sport. The premise of the book holds that gender is a product of structure, culture, and an individual's interactions within culture. This serves as the launching point for a deft discussion of the affects of sport in America. Messner has a talent for seeing the larger picture in seemingly "normal" events, and in Taking the Field he analyzes the affect that "normal" interactions in sport has on the subjugation of women and gay men, and the real and symbolic violence committed against both women and men by men. Season of Life- A Football Star- a Boy- a Journey to Manhood

5 stars (Caught-up in the story) - Jeffrey Marx began to contact "old" Baltimore Colts' players after "saying" goodbye to fabled Memorial Stadium just before its demolition in 2001. One of those players was Joe Ehrmann, the All-Pro leader of the Colts' "Sack Pack" in the 70's. Ehrmann had nicknamed him, Brillo, when Marx was a Colts' ballboy. At that time, Ehrmann was an example of a the stereo-typical fun-loving, hard partying and substance abusing athlete that "graces" the news from time to time. When Marx traced down this former Colt, he found that much had changed. After thirteen years of professional football, Ehrmann's "calling" had finally found him. He had since founded and led a wholistic ministry in Baltimore's inner city for 20 years and was volunteering as a coach at Baltimore's Gilman School. He had founded "Building Men for Others" and was also serving on the staff of a Baltimore area church. As Marx traces Joe's journey and the journey of the Gilman School's 2001 season, he is drawn into his own "journey to manhood." His "side-by-side" story-telling draws in the reader as well. A very good read and must reading for every father, for every father's son and for every woman who wants to better relate to the men in her life. 5 stars (Should be required reading for coaches) - I bought this book as I was told it was an inspiration. It truly is, and I've passed it along to many people, most importantly anyone who works with kids. With such an emphasis on "winning at all costs" these days, this puts being on a "team" into perspective. I then thought it would make a great gift for my daughter's coaches. It is one of the best books I've read, and think it should be required reading for all coaches!!!
