3 stars (Average Product) - I was not that impressed by this product. It found some spyware, but I found "Scan Spyware" [...] software to be much more comprehensive and offer better protection. I am in no way affiliated with that company, I just like their product. 5 stars (Pest Patrol Review) - This excellent product removes all manner of spyware and keeps the computer running at top efficiency. 5 stars (Blows away the competition) - I have installed this on multiple occasions, many times on PC's which were virtual "typhoid Marys" with many instances of spyware. Some PCs had "Spybot" or "Adaware" or some other such product which was having no positive effect in either identifying, let alone eliminating, the threats. After installing and running this, the program provides very specific instructions and explanation of what's going on. You can set up automatic updates for complete protection going forward. Great software, great price. ... 5 stars (Every Mac is an Island) - My gal Sara bought this because she's been a Mac person forever (I'm a former Window's person, who's made the switch) and has been used to using ResEdit to design her own icons under System 7 through 9. So now she's at it again, changing, rearranging and creating icons and I have to say, it's infectious. Who says the boys in Cupertino have to have the last say on what your desktop is going to look like. Want Microsoft Word to appear as a devil on the screen. You got it. You also get a thousand free icons with the program to start. Good ones. Macs have always been unique, now they are more so. Thumbs up from me for CandyBar Plus. 5 stars (The best out there) - Granted, one may not need all of the utilities (I use gmail which has great spam controls), but the spy sweeper and windows washer utilities are the best that I have found. I find my computer much safer with them. And windows washer cleans out blank space. I also like that the newest version works much faster than previous versions. A must to protect your PC. 4 stars (I've only used 2 parts) - The Spy Sweeper and Window Washer portions seem pretty good. You can fine-tune them to do or not do particular things, and can schedule tasks to occur at specific times. The basic function of Window Washer is to remove the "obvious" lists of file names and user names that get stored by various programs, such as the "Recently Opened" list, the history list of URL's in a browser, as well as the obscure portions Windows itself, such in error message logs, temp files, and other locations. There are about 30 spots it can clean for you, including the "slack" space in clusters. "Slack" is the left-over portion of a previous file that has been over-written. For true paranoics, there is an optional "bleach" cycle that will overwrite the slack up to 39 times. It also cleans out cookies, but you can have it leave specific ones you really need. Spy Sweeper functions like an anti-virus program and looks for ad-ware, key-stroke, and other "spy" type files on your computer. It is very customizable. If you have Window Washer or Spy Sweeper do "everything", expect it to take a pretty long time - perhaps you'll want to run it overnight... As IE offers anti-pop up and anti-spam features, I have not installed those two portions of the software, but they might prove useful to some people. ... 4 stars (Hours of FUN!) - The only problem I am finding with system mechanic 5 is that it can take many hours to do a system maintenance. I have been using the SM software since about 97 or 98... I have always loved that it really does well with keeping your system running top notch. I have NEVER had a major problem with it, but the last system maintenance I did on my 250Gb SATA (only about 20 being used) hard drive, it took 24 hours to complete... And let me warn you now! If you stop SM in the middle of a task just because you couldn't wait.... GET READY for problems... You have to let it complete. I crashed about 8 times last night because I had to stop it to use my PC... Well, now that it has run completely over night.... I can type this without any trouble ;)... I do recommend this software; they always have problems in the beginning, but thanks to updates.... They have all been fixed in the past. 5 stars (SYSMECHANIC5 PROFESSIONAL IS EXCELLENT) - My experience with Symantec Norton Works was very good until I had problems with cleaning my drives of all the duplicates and clutter left by use of the Internet. I evaluated System Mechanic5 Professional and I liked very much. Moreover,Ron Slater - Sales Representative - contacted me with several tips that put me at ease to decide on purchasing it. I am happy with the features and the user-friendly format of the software. 4 stars (Maybe they fixed the problems???) - I just installed this program a few days ago after trying the trial version first. So far, I have had no real problems. I did defrag my entire system using the optimize option. I have 4 drives partitions on two drives totaling 160GB with about 80GB of data on them (SATA 120GB drive with three partitions and a single partitioned EIDE 40GB drive). I set it to start then went to bed. Six hours later, it was complete and there were no problems (I don't know how long the process actually took, but it was done 6 hours later). 3 stars (Slow defrag and Registry Cleanup is buggy) - Don't bother using "speed up hard drives" on the "Optimize" tab...the defrag routine will literally run forever. Also, be aware that "Clean Registry" in the "PC Maintenance Wizard" does not do anything except identify deletable items...it does not remove them. In fact, the Wizard reports "None found" even though when running, it clearly identifies deletable items. If you want System Mechanic to actually remove old registry items, you have to run the routine separately from the "Fix" tab using "Fix Registry Problems". I reported this flaw to Iolo around the first of 2005 and they acknowledged the problem but have not released any fix (how ironic!). Overall, System Mechanic is Ok but the interminable defrag and goofy registry cleaner are real downers. 2 stars (Alright Software) - The only thing that saves this product is it's registry cleaner. If you need a firewall or spyware remover don't bother with these, try Webroot's Spyswepper or Norton's or McAfee's firewall. 1 stars (A DISASTER! If you must go iolo, stick with SM 4...) - "This product is full of pitfalls." I have this on very good authority (my service technicians), although I personally haven't found but ONE, I guess, since the attempted installation corrupted my hard drive to the degree that even Safe Mode was unavailable. I really liked SM 4.0 Pro but, after this nightmare (and the subsequent lack of any help whatever from iolo), I urge you to stay away from 5.0. BTW, there are no refunds under ANY circumstances so, if your pc crashes (to the tune of $150 in my case) you'll also be out the cost of the program. ... iolo technologies :: Memory Management :: Hardware :: File Compression (Decompression) :: File Conversion (Convert) :: Diagnostics (Diagnostic) :: Maintenance :: Back up (Backup Backi :: System Mechanic 5
5 stars (Excellent Tool: A must-have) - This is an excellent piece of software, and I recommend it for everyone. This tool is as valuable to me as Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. I'm a computer professional and as soon as most people find out, their first response is, "Oh my god you need to look at my computer it's SO SLOW. You need to look at it." My typical regiment is: 1) Download, Install, and Run Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 2) Scan for viruses using McAfee's free online scan (Always up-to-date, despite what may be installed) 3) Run through the registry's run and startup folder to stop unnecessary programs from starting on load 4) Download, Install, Schedule, and Run Diskeeper. People are amazed at how much faster thier computer runs. In fact, after a fresh install I also run Diskeeper just to squeeze every drop of performance out of the PC as possible. Two important things to note: - Why is defragmenting important? - Why not use the built-in defragmenter? Answers: Let's say you're writing a document in MS Word. You save the document and close it. Then you begin to write another word document. When you save the second document to disk, windows will likely put the new file immediately after the old file. Well, what happens when you add new stuff to the first file if the second file took up the space the first file had left immediately after it? Well it saves the new changes in the space AFTER the second file, hence creating a fragmented file. A fragmented file is a file the is not contiguous, and has segments in different physical locations on the hard disk. Picture a fragmented file as a file with other files inside of it, breaking it apart. If you research hard disk statistics, you'll see 2 common factors in rating hard disk performance: Seek time and transfer speed. Transfer speed is the MAXIMUM speed in which your hard disk can transfer the information over a wire from the disk itself to the computer, after the data is located. Seek time is the average amount of t... 5 stars (Saved again) - Over the years I have used Go Back numerous times, especially when the restore utility would not or could not reproduce earlier files. Go Back has never failed me, I just have to remember to back data files such as Quicken before using Go Back as newer, unbacked files will be erased and replaced with old data files. 5 stars (Problem with GoBack is Hardware (bios) related to Intel processor on Dell Laptop) - I've been using GoBack since version 2. I upgraded to version 3 for WinXP. In the last 5 or 6 years I'd only come across 2 hardware related problems that caused a problem for GoBack: I had a problem with a computer that had a GeForce2 video card, and I had a problem with a Sony Vaio computer because the mbr had been changed by GoBack and this didn't allow the Sony to run the program to burn the System and Software recovery backup discs that you need if the actual hard drive dies. I didn't find a work around for the video card problem and just changed the video card to a GeForce 4. For the Sony I uninstalled GoBack, ran the recovery disc creation software, and reinstalled GoBack. The Recovery Disc program is a run once program anyway... Last week, a client that is using the Sony desktop bought a DEll Inspiron 6000 laptop and wanted it set up like his Sony as far as GoBack and another program called CasperXP which he uses to create a bootable copy of his whole system with all files, programs, etc. Every once in awhile his voice dictation software (Dragon) trashes his sound drivers on the Sony and he simply uses GoBack to restore to a complete working system again. Occasionally, something he does to his system has happened far enough in the past, usually due to DVD files using up the GoBack buffer and he can't GoBack far enough to fix a problem, so he uses CasperXP to copy his backup OS from a second drive that we installed. He backs up his entire drive to a second drive every week, and it's bootable! Anyway, after installing GoBack on the... 2 stars (If you truely value your data, consider another more dependable product.) - I have been performing system backups with Ghost 9.0 for over a year now, with no problems. Recently, my system disk crashed twice in a matter of a month. The first time I spent four days getting everything to work again using Ghost restore. Barely got it. The second time I was not so fortunate. I am seeking another means of data backup. This version is half of what the previous versions were. PROS: Nice, easy interface. Backup data without rebooting or shutting down. CONS: Resource intensive! The snapshot feature that allows you to backup while you "work" is a resource hog, whether you are doing backups or not. It has proven unreliable for me, overall, mainly due to poor restoration features. Backs up great! But if you want to restore... uh, sorry! And of course, Norton's support is sub-par. Hope you can surf support websites well and speak Indian. Don't buy it. Give your money to another company that put some real thought into their product, and supports it. Or use an earlier version. 1 stars (Norton Ghost a Bust) - I have a shared drive on a small network running XP. Ghost is an old DOS program which doesn't like shared drives, doesn't like networks and doesn't like XP. Strongly recommend purchasing something else for this application. P.H.Woods 1 stars (Absolutely worthless) - I've been happy with Norton Internet Security for years. When the hard drive in my two year old Dell Dimenstion started making occasional "retry" noises, I decided it was time to transfer everything to a new drive. I spent an entire day trying to get Norton Ghost 9 to work. The disk copy would complete sucessfully, but the new drive would not boot. Then I started reading these reviews and found that I was not alone. Based on the recommendations in these reviews, I downloaded the 15 day trial version of True Image 8.0 from Acronis. It worked perfectly. Norton should be ashamed of taking... 1 stars (Don't purchase this if you have 10.4) - the utilities portion of this software package will not work on 10.4 and Norton said it won't be updating it. NOT WORTH THE MONEY. Go with one of the many other programs that can actually do the work. Norton has hit the skids! 1 stars (Shame on Norton) - Norton should have taken this product off the market. They had decided not to continue development for OS X 10.4 Tiger but didn't tell the coustomers leaving many like me to find out by tragic experiencce that their once great software is now dangerous to install and and difficult to uninstall. If you are running OS X 10.4 DO NOT INSTALL this program. 2 stars (Mac User beware) - Is Norton Antivirus reliable? I think that can be answered with a yes. Well, there are not so many Mac viruses around, so that statement is not validated in my own experience. What neither Amazon nor Symantec really tell you on first glance is that Antivirus 9.0 is NOT compatible with OSX 10.4. So I ended up buying Systemworks (for a steeper price then the Windows products no less) and it did not work. Two lengthy conversations with Symantec's service center in India later I knew that I had to dish otu another $40 for the upgrade to Antivirus 10.0 - you can get reimbuirsed for your purchase but it seems to take a lifetime. The Utilities package was unable to repair one of my disks wken I needed it... who knows why. Otherwise it seems to function OK under 10.4. Overall, my recommendation is if you have OSX 10.4 or plan to upgrade soon, look for another product. ...
