5 stars (Bullseye!) - This was a great read! It is right on the money with all the issues that those of us entering middle age should be thinking about and acting upon. The book is life-affirming and inspirational! 5 stars (A GREAT READ!!! ) - A great read!!! As someone about to enter this stage of my life it was a great guide and opened my eyes to the endless opportunities that still lie ahead of me. I have always loved the quote " you know you are getting old when your regrets outweigh your dreams"...this book has encouraged me to keep dreaming and stop regretting!!! 1 stars (What a disappointment!) - Totally agree with earlier reviewer -- a waste of $. A general mish-mash, all-around guide trying to cover both ends of the age spectrum with too much generality and rah-rah for what we already know. Not one to keep as a reference. So sorry to see one of my favorite no-nonsense financial columnists, Jane Bryant Quinn, touting this book on the flap. Her credibility slipped a notch. ... 5 stars (Breakthrough Book!) - I purchased this book for my teenager before sending her off to college as a freshman. She doesn't like to read, and basically dislikes books, so I was hoping she would at least skim through it and pick up some of the principles in this book. To my surprise she started reading it and never put it down! I have not read the book, but there must be something very practical and relevant in this book if it grabbed my 18 year old daughters attention! She thought it was great! 1 stars (Condescending Fluff) - It's appalling to me that this book has such a high rating as of today. I received this book from a relative when I was 14, and its condescending tone combined with the fact that it tries too hard to be "hip" effectively turned me off to it. Had I receieved "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" I may have read it. Five years later and after reading some glowing amazon.com reviews, I decided to give it a fair shot. Unfortunately, my initial impression was dead-on. This book is filled to the brim with vague fluff and moralistic, cliches. Despite that the book is marketed as written "by a teen for teens," Covey writes in a heavy-handed, righteous manner comparable to an authoritarian parent. Covey bludgeons the reader with anti-sex, anti-smoking, anti-anything-the-masses-think-is-bad propaganda. He neither cautions in an objective manner, nor enlightens. Instead, he appeals to vanity, which we know teenagers are full of (*cough*HYPOCRITE*cough*). In his diatribe against smoking, he mentions TERRIBLE side effects like *gasp* bad breath and... YELLOW FINGERTIPS! Let's not forget-- teenagers think they're invincible! They would NEVER take heed if we warned them that smoking causes CANCER AND DEATH. And therein lies the problem with the premise of the whole book: It doesn't give enough credit to the teen population as a whole. It presupposes that most teens are ignorant about life. 5 stars (Enlightenment / Liberation Made Easy) - Dr. Chopra has expressed, in a patient, loving way, how the mystic's path is becoming available to everyone ... through quantum physics, many ancient understandings of the sacredness of life are validated ... and it seems that here and now, for probably the first time in recorded history ... all of us can know ... all of us can become totally free of the fear of death ... all of us can become totally free of the negativities that entertain our mistaken identification with the mortal ego ... all of us can liberate the consciousness of our true identity ... that part of us who belongs totally to and lives totally in the timeless ... and, from time to time, manifests a life story for our learning and loving ... I recommend this book highly to anyone like me who has had difficulty in understanding the true meaning of liberation or enlightenment ... or who, like me, has had a battle royal between the ego needs and the soul's wisdom ... What Chopra has done could be called Enlightenment for Dummies but he has done this instead with patience, with love, and with gentle method. Good reading and practice for the paradigms now becoming universal to all peoples. 5 stars (One of the Best Books Ever Written) - The author of more than 41 books, 100 tapes, CDs and videos, Dr. Chopra is one of the world's greatest leaders in the field of mind body medicine. Through his latest book, Dr. Chopra continues to challenge the perception of the meaning of the mindbody health in our society by offering new and more empowering tools to access our innate healing powers in all areas of life including the physical, emotional and spiritual. In the words of Ken Wilber, one of the endorsers of this book (back cover), "The Book of Secrets is the finest and most profound of Deepak Chopra's books to date.
