5 stars (A new classic) - If change were easy, a lot of us (psychologists, counselors, health care providers) would be out of work. Still, that doesn't stop us from complaining about those clients and patients who just won't do what we think is in their best interest. Motivational Interviewing, a "client-centered, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation," was developed specifically to help faciliate change in "resistant" populations and has been embraced by addictions treatment and general health care professionals alike. The entirely re-written, highly readable, second edition of MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING updates readers on the state of the art and science of MI, and provides a practical guide for helping people to make all kinds of behavior changes. The book opens with a brief review of the converging lines of inquiry that supported the development of MI and an overview of core concepts such as readiness to change, ambivalence, and an interpersonally-based understanding of motivation. The second section is a guide to practice. While "spirit" is emphasized over technique, this section is filled with practical advice on how to increase motivation for change while minimizing resistance. A new chapter on ethics addresses the concerns that arise when attempting to motivate clients to do something they aren't sure they want to do. Consistent with the method's client-centered approach, the third section constitutes a chapter on learner-centered training in MI. The fourth section - comprising about half the volume - includes diverse contributed chapters on applications of MI. These include a discussion of MI and the Stages of Change model with which it is often associated; an excellent review of efficacy research in MI; adaptations of MI such as brief advice and MI with couples or groups; and applications with specific populations and settings. Clinical Interviewing

5 stars (User friendly. One textbook you're liable to keep.) - Interviewing textbooks are notoriously dry and mechanical. I can count using the fingers of one hand the number of books I have read on the subject that are worth their weight in cotton candy. This work by the Sommers-Flanagan duo represents an excellent addition to the instructional literature on the fine art of interviewing. They use an wonderful blend of humor, humanity, sound advice and counsel, and theory. Highly recommended. ...

Intentional Interviewing and Counseling with InfoTrac and CD-ROM - Facilitating Client Development

5 stars (The difference between a bartender and a counselor!) - This book is an excellent resource for the beginning counseling student; a wonderful introduction to the concept of the "intentional interview." This text will aid in mastering basic listening and influencing skills, as well as illustrate how to conduct a full interview using only listening skills. The authors break down the interviewing process into an easy to understand format, complete with case study illustrations. This book is not only a superb introduction to the intentional interview, it can also serve as a resource for those who are interested in honing their microskills. After all,this is what marks the difference between a bartender and a counselor! 5 stars (Novice) - For a Master's level clinical skills course I was required to read this text. While I initially thought it was more expensive than I wanted to pay for a textbook, I was pleasantly surpised that it was well worth the price. Not only did I learn skills, that I thought I had already mastered (a little cocky uh?) but I learned skills I didn't possess. I have since graduated and am working in the field, yet I still find it a useful resource and as a reminder not to get too cocky because one always can use REMINDERS about how to do something well! 4 stars (Intentional Interviewing and Counseling : Facilitating Clien) - The book was easy to understand and follow. I recommend the text to anyone that is involved in the counseling profession, teaching, and/or has contact with the public. The text teaches the basic techniques of listening and attending behaviors. It wasn't until I read this book that I realized how little I, and others listen to one another. Excellent for undergraduate and graduate level counseling programs. Very helpful text book but is not a keeper. ...

Heard on The Street- Quantitative Questions from Wall Street Job Interviews

1 stars (amazon has a very slow shipping!!) - this is a review on amazon, not the book. i haven't got the book yet. but don't be fooled by the 'Usually ships within 24 hours' message. i ordered on sept 11, and the estimated dilevery date keeps moving...., now it's sept 26-30. what the hell? 5 stars (Super Job!) - Very very insightful and useful: right on in terms of what types of issues anyone doing quantitative financial analysis should be conversant in, things that should be on the tip of your tongue 2 stars (too old) - I bought this book one month ago from Amazon. Although the newest version, I think it is too old for today's interview. The questions in my interviews are not similar as those in the book and much harder. Actually, I don't expect to get answers from the book, only try to make myself less nervous if I have some idea what the question will look like, however, this book doesn't do the job. ...
