Down Came the Rain - My Journey Through Postpartum Depression

4 stars (Rainy days) - Despite the misinformed rantings of people like Tom Cruise, clinical depression is a terrible and widespread problem. The best description I've heard yet is that it's a cancer of the soul. And of all the types, postpartum depression is perhaps the most neglected -- some people don't even know it exists, let alone how it should be treated. That is the heart of Brooke Shields' memoir "Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression." This is not a glitzy showbiz autobiography, but a wrenching look at one woman's struggle to have a baby, and then to regain her own happiness. In 2001, Shields married producer/writer Chris Henchy, and soon they were trying for a baby. But because of cervical scarring, getting pregnant was difficult, and despite all the people prattling about adoption and relaxation, Shields and Henchy tried in vitro fertilization (IVF), and after a traumatic miscarriage, finally had a baby girl. But baby Rowan was less than a day old when Shields began feeling depression and anxiety attacks. Initially she chalked this up to the difficult C-section birth and the newness of the experience, but her feelings continued over the months that followed. Though she tried to tackle her postpartum depression by herself, the help of friends and the drug Paxil were what brought her back out of the pit. The first fifty pages of "Down Came the Rain" make it seem like this will be an up-and-down story, with generous amounts of self-deprecating humour. Shields lightens the mood with humour and a willingness to reveal her unflattering or goofy thoughts, such as thinking about those chest-bursting scenes from "Alien" during a C-section. But after that, a grimmer tone takes over the book. Shields' detailed descriptions of her torment, doubts and increasingly deteriorated life are almost harrowing, as well as her description of how she couldn't even connect with her newborn daughter. It's exhilarating when she finally beats the po...

Don-t Sweat the Small Stuff--and it-s all small stuff Don-t Sweat the Small Stuff Series

5 stars (It has help) - This book is awesome. It has help me in many ways. The book has opened up my eyes and everything seems to be clear. I recommend this to everyone even if your not going through tough times. You can can see other people's expereince through this book. In somewhat ways everyone has expereince differently. 3 stars (Life Is Not a Bowl of Cherries.) - Most of us get all worked up about things which, upon closer examination, aren't really that big a deal. We focus on little problems and concerns and blow them out of proportion. One example is a minor problem in traffic when a stranger cuts in front and perhaps causes a near accident. We convince ourselves that we are justified in our anger. The other day, Jeff followed my directions to turn right, without looking to his left. A car was right up on him but, since no one was in the approaching lane, she was able to get over. Then she forced him off the road. I told him not to get out of the car as that was road rage. The woman gave him a good lecture, then cooled down when I said, "He's from Nashville. He didn't know where he was." Road rage and running through red lights are the things to do in this town. Do not worry about little things. Instead of "sweating the small stuff," take time to contemplate a solution. You'll have a lot more energy to be kinder and gentler. When your mind is clear and peaceful and your stress level is reduced, you'll have more fun. When your stress is small, it's manageable and easy to control. We all have high (optimistic about the future and grateful for the past)) and low, negative moods (life is never as bad as it seems at that time). In a low mood, you feel that your whole life is wrong. In a good mood, everything seems to go much better. Life is never fair. It should be, but it's not and it won't be someday. We determine our rate by not expecting fairness and feeling sorry for ourselves. It is our own challenge to overcome personal struggles. ...

How to Become a Great Boss- The Rules for Getting and Keeping the Best Employees

1 stars (If you want to become a great boss, don't read this) - Fox uniquely attempts to give suggestions on how to keep the best employees. Fox divides his book into fifty short stories that sometimes include a real life situation. Many of his anecdotes have serious flaws in the basic principles of Organizational Behavior, while others do not fully explain how to handle potential problems. There are instances where his suggestions can be very useful in becoming a good manager. At other times, his stories have good concepts, but do have loopholes. If you were interested in only seeing a small picture of the steps to becoming a great manager, then I would recommend this book to you. Fo'xs numerous weaknesses on motivation make me believe that he does not understand some of the basic concepts of motivation. Furthermore, his continual discussion of avoiding mishires, without any description on how to do that, further weakens his arguments. I believe this book is for more experienced managers and educated employees who know to extrapolate the good ideas in the book, and ignore the bad. 2 stars (Very General ) - These are the basics... Some mangers probably need this but I would like to think that most are beyond this kind of general and obvious information. I got this book on CD and it was boring, I hate to imagine what it would be like to have read it. I recomend Primal Leadership. 1 stars (Not the least bit helpful) - I normally don't write reviews but I just read this book and I couldn't believe how much of a waste of money it was. Here's the book in a nutshell- Hire good employees and fire bad ones. ...

The Greatest Game Ever Played- Harry Vardon- Francis Ouimet- and the Birth of Modern Golf

5 stars (The Greatest Game Ever Played) - I love this book. I am a woman over 60 who started playing golf 8 years ago. I have achieved a 17 handicap and realize how tough this game. The Greatest Game is a marvelous account of real people, playing a grueling game. I have just spent 4 days playing BAndon Dunes. This is akin to the era of The Greatest Game. I can't wait for the movie. 5 stars (Golf history is great!) - This is a must read for anyone wanting to know about the early history of American golf. This book is soon to come out in a movie - so I would read it as soon as you can! 5 stars (The greatest book about the greatest game) - Frost's account may not be truly be about the "birth of modern golf" but it certainly recounts the beginning of the popularity, if not the ascendency, of golf in the United States. The portraits of the characters in this saga, from Vardon, to Ouimet and even Eddy Lowry made vivid the explicit details of the critical rounds played on those hallowed Country Club grounds. It was golf history in the style and scholarship of Barbara Tuchman. A fabulous read for any with a passion for history and golf, even if you have never been interested in the history of golf. You will be interested ever after you read this book, and waiting eagerly for Frost's account-sequel of the greatest amateur to play the game. ...

The Grand Slam - Bobby Jones- America- and the Story of Golf

5 stars (Fate, Persistance & A Slam) - Frost has done it again, a marvelous read of golf's rich history and lore. This follows his excellent work on Ouimet and the start of America's love with this game and its champions. Frost is good at weaving the story here of Jones and the only Grand Slam to date with the surrounding cultural news. This provides necessary backdrop to the golf. The persistance of this individual who many a time could have and felt like chucking it in, but kept on, learning and growing not by wins so much, but by the losses. Fate had its share in all this as well, as Jones and associates knew. The incidents on and off the links where it almost seemed as the script had already been written, as Pop Keeler sensed from the outset. There are many good stories here, written with gusto and passion and solid wordscultping. Wonderful photos grace each new chapter. Many developments leading up to the Slam never realized were revealed here: Mail Freeburg saving them from burning train bridge; skip shot across the lake; etc. This is must reading for avid golfer, for the paths cross likes of Nicklaus, Palmer, Eisenhower, Hagan, Sarazen, etc. His legendary amateur status, then retirement, accomplishments in studies and law, and friendships abound. Long but will hold one's attention and get one through, so that re-reads can and do happen. 4 stars (Excellent and Entertaining) - Mark Frost again shows he has his finger on the pulse of American sports history with his marvelous biography of Bobby Jones. This is the first Jones bio I have encountered that looks beyond the championships and The Slam to look at what Bobby went through to acheive such feats. It was especially interesting to see that the Grand Slam was not a series of dominating peformances, and that on at least one occasion (to paraphrase the Duke of Wellington) it was a damn close run thing. While it is roundly recognized that Jones heyday was occured in the Golden Age of American s...
