5 stars (Updated information AND layout makes a healthy book) - This book is by far the best ever. It is the first edition of OBOS which I feel really addresses the equally pressing healthcare needs of myself and younger generations of women. I had used prior versions of this book, but still had felt that the authors of those versions assumed that the readers had been with them through the 1970's...etc. The tone of this book is very inclusive and non-presuming. Consequently the medical information presented does not get lost in the personal vingettes. Our own generational experiences are just as important. Also, the authors take an enligthened approach to sexuality instead of segmenting off "LGBT/queer" issues into a couple of areas. This book is further commendable because it made more of an effort to tell the stories (and thus provide culturally sensitive health care) for different women. Kudos to the people who suggested a redesign and updating of the book layout. 5 stars (A must have!) - Especially in a culture as embarrassed to talk about anything sexual, this book is a great resource for everyone. Information as open and educated gets harder and harder to find in today's political environment, and this book has it all. No home should be without it! 1 stars (very political) - While I understand the possibility of political opinions surfacing in books, what was supposed to be a helpful guide for women of all ages is in reality a campaign for pro-choice and many other liberal stances. The book goes so far as to state that those that are pro-life "have created an atmosphere that is stigmatizing, threatening, and too often violent." While there have been cases of violence that the great majority of us do not condone, I find it very offensive that this opinion about us causing trouble that apparently isn't warranted is stated as a fact. Emergency Medicine- A Comprehensive Study Guide 6th edition

4 stars (This book is an excellent learning tool!) - This book is a great textbook of emergency medicine, and I've chosen it over others simply because it's comprehensive without the useless drivel. Each section includes the necessary anatomy and pathophysiological considerations for the respective disoders. The subset of conditions are mentioned with just enough facts to understand the morbidity to treat it. The pictures, diagrams, algorithmic flow-charts, and drug regimens are a nice compliment, however, most of your clinical experience is going to come from interships and residency, so to assume this book is all you'll need to get by in EM is crazy. I still think it's the best out there to read before putting your mind to work. 2 stars (Downward Spiral on Autopilot) - *Emergency Medicine, A Comprehensive Study Guide* has long been a well-regarded standard emergency text, useful in day-to-day practice as well as for board preparation. This new edition has advanced the enlightened 'evidence-based recommendations' for changes in practice patterns, however, the lack of editorial control has resulted in a book packed with conflicting information. Each chapter is written by a different consultant, and unfortunately not all of them are up on this concept... we therefore get a series of conflicting statements when there is overlap in topics, and there is no attempt to reconcile this variability. Admittedly, opinions in much of medicine do vary; but outright conflict within a few pages in a standard text without discussion does harm to credibility. Further loss of editorial control is also evident on a close read. It is apparent that a spell-checker was used for proof-reading (substitutions of the nature of "week" for "weak" abound) and in some areas clinical formulae have been mis-stated -- example: calculation of effective osmolarity, pg. 1341 (though correct elsewhere in the book). Public Health- Third Edition - What It Is and How It Works

1 stars (Inaccurate and vapid) - If you've ever had any actual experience in public health, you will probably recognize this book for the sham it really is. Public health systems in the real world just don't behave in the idealized way that Turnock describes. Moreover, Turnock is far too uncritical of HMOs, which consitently fail to provide actual assitance (not just theoretical assistance) to patients who need it. There is also no understanding at all here about the ways in which class differences affect dstribution of health care coverage, or any discussion of what we might be able to do about it. The reader is left with a blinkered and rather utopian model of our current public health system - one that glosses over existing problems and presents only the most simplistic assessments. You might learn something if you're just beginning your public health studies, but for the rest of us, this book just isn't worth its exorbitant price tag. 5 stars (Wow...) - Boy, I'm surprised at the reaction the book is getting! I have this book, and it's really quite good - I'm an MS-Epidemiology candidate, and it's really helped me with the fundamentals of the field. Incidentally, in response to the implication that Dr. Turnock is less than qualified to put forth an effort such as this, you might want to investigate that, you can find his impressive accompishments at the school's website. Board certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and former director of the IDPH, to name a few? Sounds qualified to me. I'd recommend this book to any PH student or someone looking to learn the basics...I don't hesitate to rank this right up there with Gordis. Crisis Intervention Strategies with InfoTrac

2 stars (Skip the profanity) - A fairly good text, it probably covers the field better than other available sources. However, the selection of illustrations seem to be chosen based on how much profanity they can include. I realize that crisis situations involve people who don't monitor their usage, but why include every F--- and other curse word when they aren't needed to convey the meaning. I teach large classes and probably won't adopt this title because of the gratuitous inclusion of verbal static. 5 stars (An invaluable tool in the field of mental health.) - Gilliland and James have successfully created an extremely comprehensive introduction to crisis intervention methodology in this text. While lacking some historical perspective on the development of this methodology, the book incorporates a variety tools useful to the mental health professional. These tools well make up for the exclusion of a short history on crisis intervention. The authors clearly defined various helping situations (i.e., suicide, sexual assault, spousal abuse, and chemical dependency) and demonstrated how their applications assisted in the resolution of these issues. Furthermore, Gilliland and James added the sections on extreme circumstances, such as hostage taking, as well as professional concerns, such as burnout. For those entering the field, this text provides a wealth of information. Those that are well seasoned will still find this a useful reference. On first glance, I was surprised to find this text so easily read, particularly when dealing with such a serious subject, yet I have returned to it time and again in my own practice for ideas and direction. Emergency Care w-CD-ROM Paper version 10th Edition

4 stars (Excellent Workbook) - I used this workbook in conjuction with the Emergency Care Book, to prepare for the state registry EMT-B test, and the NREMT-B test. This is a MUST have if you are using the Emergency Care Book. Questions are nearly identical in wording and phrasing to the NREMT-B exam, and the inclusion of practice homework problems add even more preparation oppertunities. DO NOT BUY THE EMERGENCY CARE BOOK, WITHOUT THIS WORKBOOK! 4 stars (Good, VERY good...) - I am a current EMT-B student and currently use this book as text. The book is indeed easy to read, and has a lot of features to help a student prepare for that dreadful exam. I reccomend buying the workbook as well, to really solidify the knowledge gained by reading. In my class the tests are easy in comparison to the questions in the workbook, this is why I recommend buying the workbook. Also, using all of the features incorporated in this book will, with out any doubt, prepare you for the test. The assessment chapters are mangled as the instructor's review says, but there is a great graphic in the front of the book and being how assessment is SO VITAL, one should visualize it on their own and practice till its like tieing a shoe. All in all a quality well thought out book, with tons of features. 5 stars (You think they are all the same....) - But they aren't. This was my required reading. I doubled up and purchased two others just in case. I found that I liked this one the best and just wasted my money on the other two. This book is very well organized and since all of the content to review for the NREMT is the same, that's what it is all about. Highly recommended. ...
